Roger L. Griess

Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999

Sutton resident Roger L. Griess, 61, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at the Veteran's Administration Greater Nebraska Health Care System in Grand Island.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kohler Mortuary chapel in Sutton with the Rev. Berg officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Sutton Argonne American Legion Post No. 61.

Mr. Griess was born Jan. 14, 1938, to Oscar and Lenora (Nuss) Griess on a farm near Lushton. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1955. In 1957 he joined the U.S. Army and served for two years. On Jan. 30, 1967, he married Paula Topham in Eureka, S.D. They divorced in 1971. He worked as a truck driver, farm hand, plumber and handiman. He also worked for a fertilizer company. He lived in Aurora and Lushton before moving to Sutton.

He was a member of the Sutton American Legion and the VFW of Harvard.

Survivors are one daughter, Michelle of California; one son, Michael of California; one sister, Genevieve Iversen of Wahoo; and one brother, Norm of Henderson.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Sutton Community Home.

Nellie Jenkins

Friday, April 28, 2000

Hastings resident Nellie (Andersen) Jenkins, 89, of 1023 N. Baltimore Ave., died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jenkins was born March 15, 1911, to Chris and Dorothea (Clifford) Andersen in Newport. In 1928 she married Marion R. Jenkins in Clearwater. They moved from Meadow Grove to Hastings in the 1950s. She was a nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and the Hastings Regional Center. In 1972 her husband died.

She attended Faith Lutheran Church.

Survivors are one daughter, June Kehn of Hastings; one brother, Bud of Grand Junction, Colo.; one sister, Alice Hieter of Carlsbad, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Charles; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Pauline D. 'Polly' Choquette

Thursday, April 27, 2000

Campbell resident Pauline D. "Polly" (Schnase) Choquette, 92, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at her home.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Campbell with the Rev. Bill Caughey officiating. Burial will be in the Upland Cemetery. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Choquette was born Feb. 13, 1908, to Charles and Pauline (Kottwitz) Schnase in Blue Hill. On Jan. 7, 1931, she married Oval M. Choquette in Smith Center, Kan. They lived on a farm between Upland and Campbell until 1960 when they moved into Campbell. On Nov. 11, 1968, her husband died.

She was a member of the Upland Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid until the church closed. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Campbell.

Survivors are one daughter, Donna Jean Oberg of Hastings; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Martin G. Raatz

Thursday, April 27, 2000

Chester resident Martin G. Raatz, 72, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kan.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber chapel in Belleville with the Rev. Robert Hovorka officiating. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery in Chester. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. today and Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Raatz was born Dec. 1, 1927, to Carl and Mathilda (Tietjen) Raatz in rural Hubbell. On March 30, 1957, he married Dixie Lee Wessel. He was an antique dealer and employee at the Foote Station until he retired.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lonnie of Aurora, Ill., and Russell of Lincoln; two brothers, Donald and Charles, both of Hebron; two sisters, Carol Mulch of Independence, Mo., and Margaret Witte of Hebron; and four grandchildren.

Robert E. Parminter

Tuesday, April 25, 2000

Former Hastings resident Robert E. "Bob" Parminter, 45, of Eagle died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, near Palmyra.

Services were to be 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with the Revs. Jeff Thurman and Lester Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Parminter was born June 29, 1954, to Everett and Betty (Blakeley) Parminter in Stromsburg. He graduated from Stromsburg Public Schools in 1972. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Hastings College in 1977. He lived in various places, including Lincoln. On Dec. 17, 1993, he married Desiree Hibbard in Las Vegas. He was a shipping and receiving manager for Metal Works in Lincoln at the time of his death.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Chantel Knego, Gracie Parminter and Andie Parminter, all of Eagle; his parents of Stromsburg; three sisters, Linda Rezabek of Dorchester, Nancy VanFossen of Columbus and Kathy Parminter of Lincoln; and two brothers, Tom of London, England, and Bill of Lincoln.

Patricia A. Griess

Wednesday, April 26, 2000

Hastings resident Patricia A. (Bane) Griess, 48, of 602 Dockside Cove died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in Hall County.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating and 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach with the Rev. Kenneth West officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to services Monday morning at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Monday afternoon at the church.

Mrs. Griess was born April 3, 1952, to Ernest F. and Bernadene M. (Johnston) Bane in Palmer. She graduated from Wolbach High School in 1970 and from Grand Island School of Business in 1971. She moved to Hastings in 1971. On June 30, 1995, she married Bryan D. Griess. She was a self-employed interior decorator.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Angela Engel of Omaha and Gayle Engel of Kearney; one son, Ben Engel of Ayr; four stepchildren, Jami Griess of Lincoln, Zachary Griess of Hastings and Cajun Griess and Nick Griess, both of Granby, Colo.; her mother of Wolbach; two sisters, Jean Johnson of Omaha and Christine Rector of Westminster, Colo.; and one brother, Ernest Jr. of Wood River.

She was preceded in death by her father and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Patricia A. Griess Memorial Fund.

Roxie L. Teters

Franklin resident Roxie L. (Baxley) Teters, 72, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at BryanLGH East Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin with the Rev. Nancy Cole officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and one hour prior to services Monday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mrs. Teters was born May 24, 1927, to Arthur and Lucey (Blebins) Baxley in New Albany, Ind. In 1965 she married John D. Teters in Reno, Nev. They moved from Las Animas, Colo., to Franklin in 1980. On May 3, 1987, her husband died.

Survivors are three sons, David Rash of Texas and Richard Rash and Roger Rash, both of Indiana; one stepson, Tom Teters of Hawthorne, Nev.; two daughters, Bonnie Rash of Indiana and Connie Rash; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter; one brother; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Jessie F. Kindig

Thursday, April 27, 2000

Hastings resident Jessie F. (Swartz) Kindig, 89, of 1725 W. Fifth St. died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mrs. Kindig was born Aug. 23, 1910, to Charles and Gertrude (Mellinger) Swartz. She graduated from Hastings High School. In 1938 she married Lylle W. Kindig. He preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1962. She was a clerk for several pharmacies.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Carol Sole of Hastings and Mary DeMasters of Mountain View, Calif.; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Lawrence 'Tony' Kirchhoff

Superior resident Lawrence "Tony" Kirchhoff, 76, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church near Nelson with the Rev. Clint McDonald officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kirchhoff was born March 14, 1924, to John and Anna (Heitmann) Kirchhoff near Byron. On Dec. 14, 1947, he married Verna Biltoft in Byron. He and his family farmed in the Thayer and Nuckolls County area. He was also a NC+ certified seed producer for more than 45 years.

He was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, Salem Lutheran Church, the Nebraska Campus Ministry board, Blue Valley Lutheran Home board, Rural Ministry board, Nebraska Crop Improvement Association and a charter member of NC+ Hybrids.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Sonia Schmidt of Superior; two sons, Rex of Byron and Craig of Clarksburg, Calif.; one sister, Betty Bokenkamp of Deshler; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family.

Jean L. Batt

Friday, April 21, 2000

Hastings resident Jean L. (Waterman) Batt, 70, of 1248 Arapahoe Ave. died Friday, April 21, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Batt was born March 2, 1930, to Lenard and Fay (Warner) Waterman in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1947. On Dec. 26, 1950, she married Robert J. Antonides. She graduated with distinction from Hastings College in 1951. She then taught at David City High School. On Oct. 10, 1967, she married Richard L. Batt. From 1970-89 she worked in the Hastings College administration. On Nov. 14, 1979, her husband died. She was a bookkeeper and secretary at Uerling Furniture in Hastings from 1989 until this year.

She was a former president of Altrusa International Inc. and was active in the Hastings Community Theater.

Survivors are one daughter, Pam Salano of Lincoln; three sons, Michael Antonides of Ashland, Ohio, Gregory Antonides of Peru and Kristopher Antonides of Greenfield, N.H.; three sisters, Gwen Weis of Scottsboro, Ala., and Irene Lindau and Eileen Robinson, both of Hastings; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials have been established.

Phyllis J. 'P.J.' Kimle

Monday, April 24, 2000

Former Campbell resident Phyllis Jane "P.J." Kimle, 48, of Thermopolis, Wyo., died Monday, April 24, 2000, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minden. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Thermopolis with the Rev. Joe Galligan officiating. Burial will be at Monument Hill Cemetery in Thermopolis. Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kimle was born May 6, 1951, to Phil and Mary Jane Kimle in Campbell. She graduated from Campbell Public School in 1969. On Dec. 28, 1969, she married Ronald Perrie. She graduated from nursing school in Kearney in 1975 as a licensed practical nurse. In 1984 she moved to Lander, Wyo., where she was a nurse and worked in marketing for KDLY/KOVE radio station. She then moved to Thermopolis where she was chamber director for the town for two years. She moved to Casper, Wyo., and marketed medical supplies for Brown's Medical of Omaha. She later became station manager for KQLT radio and returned to Thermopolis.

Survivors are one son, James Perrie of Campbell; one daughter, Rhonda Devries of Thermopolis; her father of Thermopolis; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Memorials may be given to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minden.

Phyllis M. Bassett

Tuesday, April 25, 2000

Hastings resident Phyllis M. (Brouillette) Bassett, 79, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Perkins.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Revs. Larry Gyhra and Tom Brouillette officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bassett was born April 16, 1921, to Joseph and Natalie (Breault) Brouillette in Campbell. On May 28, 1940, she married James L. "Vern" Bassett in Hastings. She was former owner of Phyls Beauty Salon in Hastings and co-owner of the Beauty Center Salon and Merle Norman Cosmetics, both in Hastings.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. She was a past member of Nebraska State and National Hairdressers and Cosmetology Association Hastings Unit No. 14.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Tom of Republican City; one daughter, Kathy Shafer of Trumbull; two sisters, Helena Miller and Augustine Consbruck, both of Hastings; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Renovation Fund.
