Joseph E. Faimon

Thursday, May 6, 1999

Former Lawrence resident Joseph E. Faimon, 91, of Old Hickory, Tenn., died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at a Tennessee hospital.

Rosary is 6:30 p.m. today at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Directors in Nashville, Tenn. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Mt. Juliet, Tenn., with the Rev. Patrick Kibby officiating. Private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Nashville. Visitation is until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Faimon was born April 13, 1908, to Anton and Henrietta (Ondra) Faimon at Lawrence. He attended school in Lawrence. He graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Pharmacy. In 1931, he married Gertrude "Trudy" Kroening. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. He also retired as a pharmacist for the Middle Tennessee State Mental Health Hospital. After retirement, he worked as a substitute pharmacist at many Middle Tennessee pharmacies.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post No. 88 and Mended Heart Association.

Survivors are his wife; one son, William J. Faimon of Nashville; one sister, Rose Gilsdorf of Hastings; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Father Ryan High School Development Fund, 700 Norwood Drive, Nashville, TN 37204 or Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203.

Edna Burton

Saturday, May 15, 1999

Former Hastings resident Edna (Ziebarth) Burton, 88, of Los Angeles died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in Los Angeles.

The remains were cremated. There were no services. Green Hills Funeral Home of Rancho Palosverdes, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burton was born Nov. 5, 1910, to William "Bill" and Etta (Habben) Ziebarth near Wilcox. She attended St. John's Lutheran Church parochial school near Wilcox until eighth grade. In 1930 she graduated from Wilcox Public Schools. After high school she started working in the family bank in Wilcox. In 1936 she moved to Hastings where she worked for J.B. Hillers Insurance Agency. She later moved with her husband, Louis Burton, and their family to Los Angeles.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley and Dudley of Harbor City, Calif.; one daughter, Virginia Nunez of Los Angeles; two sisters, Irene Lester of Garden Grove, Calif., and Thera Marczinko of Hemet, Calif.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Harvard resident Bernard Gastineau, 58, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Harvard Rest Haven.

Services are pending with Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.

Heather M. Schock

Wednesday, May 26, 1999

Former Hastings resident Heather Marie Schock, 26, of Greeley, Colo., died of cancer Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at her home.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Greeley.

Ms. Schock was born Aug. 15, 1972, to Elmer and June (Baillie) Schock in Mandan, N.D. She attended schools in Hastings; Kiel, Germany; and Greeley Central High School in Greeley. She earned her bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Northern Colorado-Greeley. She was manager of the Wherehouse Music Store in Boulder, Colo., at the time of her death.

Survivors are two grandparents, Lydia Schock of Mandan and Margaret Baillie of Bismarck, N.D.

Memorials may be given to the Heather Marie Schock Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the First Congregational Church.

Thurlo E. McCrady

Former Hastings resident Thurlo E. "Mac" McCrady, 91, of Lake San Marcos, Calif., died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Gayle E. Hadenfeldt

Wednesday, June 2, 1999

Kenesaw resident Gayle E. Hadenfeldt, 63, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Paul Duffy officiating. Burial will be in Kenesaw Cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Hadenfeldt was born Jan. 20, 1936, to Edwin and Katie Marie (Ahrens) Hadenfeldt in Kenesaw. In 1953 he graduated from Kenesaw High School. On June 12, 1955, he married Joyce A. Riese at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein. In the early 1960s they lived in Kenesaw where he was co-owner of the Kenesaw Mobil Gas Station. In 1967 he started working for Turner Grain and later Davis Equipment in Grand Island. In 1980 he was co-founder of Heartland Agri Supply in Grand Island where he worked part time until his death.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kenesaw.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Ronda Ehly and Conda Quackenbush, both of Kenesaw; one sister, Ellen Nabower of Kenesaw; one brother, Myron of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

J C Smith

Wednesday, June 2, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident J C Smith, 89, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care in Mankato.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 28, 1909, to George H. and Jennie (Weidenheimer) Smith in Mankato. He attended rural schools and graduated from Mankato High School. On March 26, 1929, he married Wilma Billie. He was a member of the Montrose School Board and was a retired farmer. After he retired, he lived in Florida for 25 years before returning to Mankato. His wife died on April 27, 1998.

Survivors are three sons, Billy of Formoso, Kan., Van of Mankato and George of Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Jacqueline Keener of Bella Vista, Ark.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care.

Kevin Ray Kendall

April 29, 1999

Hebron resident Kevin Ray Kendall, 42, died April 29, 1999, at Lovewell Lake near Superior.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron with the Revs. Paul Sheehy and John Walton officiating. Burial will be at a later date. His remains were cremated. There will be no visitation. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kendall was born Aug. 9, 1956, to Gary Allan and Phyllis June (Cegavske) Kendall in Milton, Fla. He moved with his family to Hastings at an early age. There he graduated from high school in 1974. On Dec. 1, 1979, he married Marlene A. Escritt. He was a salesman for Kitty Clover Potato Chip Co. for 13 years. In 1992 he began working as a salesman for Metz Baking Co. He later moved his route to Hebron.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, William Escritt, David Kendall, Raymond Kendall and Gary Kendall, all of Hebron; one daughter, Rachal Kendall of Omaha; his parents of Hastings; two sisters, Kim Fielder of Hastings and Stacey Seim of Wauwatosa, Wis., and two grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Maude Clarabelle Gentert Sheffield

Friday, April 23, 1999

Former Holstein resident Maude Clarabelle (Bailey) Gentert Sheffield, 94, of Rock Port, Mo., died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. June 19 at Brownville Nebraska Christian Church at Brownville. Burial will be at a later date at Holstein Cemetery in Holstein. Minter Funeral Home of Rock Port is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sheffield was born July 1, 1904, to Henry L. and Rachel (Dyer) Bailey near Maynardville, Tenn. Her mother died when she was 5. She then lived with relatives. At age 13 she went to live with her aunt, Phoebe Hargleroad, in Holstein. On Sept. 18, 1922, she married Raymond Gentert in Lincoln. He died Oct. 11, 1970. On May 1, 1979, she married Bernard Sheffield. He died May 1, 1986. In August 1990 she moved to Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Survivors are three daughters, Mae Petersen of Holstein, Lois Whitney of Hastings and Rachel Solomon of Simi Valley, Calif.; one son, Raymond Gentert Jr. of Brownville; 15 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Maudie Meyer and Eleanor Whitney; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Hastings resident J. Donald Schafer, 86, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Robert G. "Bob" Anderson

Sunday, May 9, 1999

Former Hastings resident Robert G. "Bob" Anderson, 77, of the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at the home.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with Steve Ginn officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens north of Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home. The family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Anderson was born Oct. 13, 1921, to Horace C. and Mary A. (Rubel) Anderson in Evanston, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. He moved to Lincoln, where he worked for the Nebraska State Penitentiary. He later worked for the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department, for which he was an investigator during the Charles Starkweather crime spree in Lincoln. In 1959 he moved to Hastings. He worked in the Adams County Sheriff's Department and was later elected sheriff. In 1978 he moved to Wyoming where he worked in law enforcement in Camel County. In 1983 he returned to Lincoln. In 1997 he moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home.

He was past chairman of Region 13 Crime Commission, Big Brothers, Highway Safety Commission, 21-County Emergency Medical Services Council, Lions Noon Club and SouthEast Sheriffs Association. He was a past member of the VFW, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and Noon Lions Club, all in Hastings. He also was a past member of the Nebraska Sheriffs and Peace Officers, National Sheriffs Association, American Law Enforcement Officers Association, American Federation of Police, and Police Officers Association of Nebraska. He received the Good Government Award in 1966 and 1967 from the Hastings Jaycees and Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer in 1971. He served on the Nixon Inauguration Security Team.

Survivors are one son, Lauren K. of Omaha; two stepdaughters, Peggy Pierson of Omaha and Christine Tackett of Bellevue; two stepsons, Michael Morris of Wahoo and Kenneth Morris of Scott City, Kan.; two brothers, Eugene of Chicago and Lawrence of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Janet Riepe; one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Wall Fund or Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Bethene "Betty" Jacobson

Friday, May 7, 1999

Former Bruning resident Bethene "Betty" Jacobson, 87, of Manhattan, Kan., died Friday, May 7, 1999, in Manhattan.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Manhattan with the Revs. Robert Sanders and John Albrecht officiating. Her remains were cremated. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Bruning Public Cemetery in Bruning. There will be no viewing. The remains were cremated. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jacobson was born Dec. 29, 1911, to Charles W. and Emma (Franzen) Albrecht in rural Bruning. She was a graduate of Geneva High School.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Manhattan, Christian Women's Club and Manhattan Country Club. She was a Republican Party Precinct committeewoman and a Gray Lady.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or Homecare and Hospice Inc. in care of Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Jana Dee Franck

Thursday, May 6, 1999

Former Superior resident Jana Dee (Bargen) Franck, 63, of Vero Beach Fla., died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at a Florida hospital.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor, Maine. Burial will be at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor. Brookings-Smith Funeral Home of Bangor is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Franck was born July 6, 1935, to Hermon and Meta Louise (Schlief) Bargen in Superior. She graduated from Superior High School in Superior and attended Lincoln School of Nursing in Lincoln. In 1955 she married Robert R. Franck. They lived in Manchester, Conn. In 1970 they moved to Brewer, Maine. In 1985 she graduated from Eastern Maine Technical College. Her husband died in 1994.

Survivors are two sons, John of Orrington, Maine, and Michael of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Sandy Leahy of Bedford, N.H., and Tena Carter of Wellington, Fla.; two brothers, Dwayne Bargen of Lincoln, and Billy Bargen of Portland; one sister, Feetzie Brazil of Superior; and many grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to St. John's School, 166 State St., Bangor, ME 04401.
