Alvin J. Jensen

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Ruskin resident Alvin J. Jensen, 85, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, in Deshler.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery in Ruskin. Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mr. Jensen was born Feb. 9, 1914, to Soren and Bertina (Christensen) Jensen near Ruskin. He attended country school near Nora. He later farmed in the Nora and Ruskin area. On Aug. 3, 1949, he married Louise Christine Andersen at the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Westby, Mont. The couple farmed near Ruskin until 1982 when they moved to Ruskin. His wife died Nov. 6, 1995.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Men's Organization and helped with the CROP program.

Survivors are one daughter, Marietta Seggerman of Fairmont; two sisters, Esther Miller of Wahoo and Eva Nelson of Williston, N.D.; two brothers, Albert of Lawrence, Kan., and Harvey of Omaha; and three grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Jensen.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.

Stanley F. Plank

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Franklin resident Stanley Fay Plank, 73, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

The remains were cremated. There will be no services. Interment is in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Plank was born Jan. 18, 1926, to Henry and Alma (Francisco) Plank in Bird City, Kan. He moved to Reemsville, Kan. In 1939 he moved to Franklin and attended school there. From 1943-46 he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Dec. 1, 1945, he married Maxine Splattstoesser in Smith Center, Kan. He was the owner and operator of Planks Hardware and Lumber, Pit Stop Convenience Store and Plunk and Bunk Motel, all in Franklin. He was a retired carpenter.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Franklin and VFW Post No. 5757. He served on the Franklin Board of Education and Grace Lutheran Church board.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Doug and Neil, both of Franklin; three sisters, Fern Kailey of Tacoma, Wash., Joyce Patterson of Hastings and Donna Siebert of Superior; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Andrew Meyer

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Minden resident Andrew Meyer, 15, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, near Nebraska City as a result of a traffic accident.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the C.L. Jones Middle School in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Etzelmiller

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Minden resident Carolyn Etzelmiller, 69, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, near Nebraska City as a result of a traffic accident.

William J. O'Rourke Jr.

Saturday, May 29, 1999

Former Hastings resident William James O'Rourke Jr., 53, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs. There will be a private inurnment. Swan Law Funeral Directors Inc. in Colorado Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O'Rourke was born May 24, 1946, to William J. Sr. and Phyllis (Gallagher) O'Rourke in Chicago. He attended St. Lucy's Elementary School in Chicago. In 1960 he and his family moved to Hastings and he attended St. Cecilia Catholic High School. In 1968 he graduated from St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. He was a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in Lincoln. In 1969 he married Anne Morrissey. He obtained his master's degree and doctorate in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1979 he and his wife moved to Colorado Springs. He served as director of secondary education in the Harrison School District for 15 years. He also wrote a sports column for the Northern Lights newspaper in Colorado Springs in the late 1980s. In 1994 he and his wife formed an education consulting team and worked throughout the country. In 1999 the Center for Learning, Assessment and School Structure in Pennington, N.J., established the O'Rourke Prize in Educational Professional Development in his honor.

He and his wife raised four foster children, Mark Trujillo, Dedrick Jackson, Ken Crutcher and Robert Handy.

Survivors are his wife; one sister, Jane O'Rourke of Maine; and one brother, Jack of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bernard Gastineau

Thursday, May 27, 1999

Harvard resident Bernard Gastineau, 58, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Harvard Cemetery with the Rev. Marvin Coffey officiating. Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home of Harvard is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gastineau was born July, 18, 1940, in North Platte. He worked as a building painter.

Doris E. Raitt

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Grand Island resident Doris E. (Westberry) Raitt, 70, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.

The remains were cremated. There are no services. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her father; two sons, including Shayne of Hastings; one daughter; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Wilbur D. Chambers

Monday, May 31, 1999

Former Hastings resident Wilbur D. Chambers, 82, of Holly Hill, Fla., died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, Fla.

The remains were cremated. Services will be at a later date.

Mr. Chambers was born Oct. 6, 1916, to William and Minnie Pearl (Frazier) Chambers in Grand Island. He was raised in Hastings and graduated from Hastings Senior High School. He also lived in Delaware before moving to Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a civil engineer for the U.S. government. His first wife, Irene Schubeck, died in 1993. His second wife, Mary Love, died in January 1998.

He was a member of Mensa and a Mason.

Survivors are one son, Alan of Newark, Del.; one daughter, Marilyn Cale of Key Biscayne, Fla.; one sister, Gert Blume of Hastings; and three grandchildren.

Don Kinnison

Thursday, June 17, 1999

Edgar resident Don Kinnison, 83, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Edgar.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Edgar Cemetery in Edgar with the Rev. Harold Fox officiating. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.

Mr. Kinnison was born Aug. 26, 1915, to William Everett and Elda M. (Taylor) Kinnison at Angus. He spent his early childhood in Angus, later moving to Casper, Wyo. He graduated from Natrona County High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army for four years. He lived in California until 1996. He then moved back to Nebraska to be near his family.

He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and a lifetime national charter member of AMVETS.

He is survived by one sister, Lola Peters of Nelson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Pearl Kinney

Thursday, June 17, 1999

Minden resident Pearl Vera (Scharff) Kinney, 80, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the Kearney County Health Services hospital in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. M. Manick Samuel officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Kinney was born Jan. 16, 1919, to Louis Augusta and Eva Pearl (Beisel) Scharff near Upland. She grew up around Upland and attended District No. 30 rural school in Kearney County until the eighth grade. She married Oscar Kinney on Aug. 29, 1937. They moved to Minden in 1955. She worked as a nurse's aide at Kearney County Community Hospital and Bethany Home, both in Minden, for many years. Later she worked at Bunger Brothers Processing and in the hospital kitchen. Her husband died in 1978.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and its ladies' circle.

Survivors are one son, Keith of Hastings; two sisters, Norma Bunger of Minden and Detta Ann Walker of Akron, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a sister who died in infancy.

Glenn 'Pete' Arent

Friday, June 18, 1999

Minden resident Glenn "Pete" Arent, 90, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Arent was born Dec. 4, 1908, to Charles and Christena (Larsen) Arent in Minden. He attended school in Minden. He married Frieda Schurmann on March 16, 1931. They farmed in the Wilcox and Upland areas for many years. They moved into Minden in 1972.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden. He served eight years on the Franklin County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service board.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, R. Sue Jirkovsky-Landers of Topeka, Kan., and Kathy Stutesman of Hastings; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Bob Arent; one brother; and two sisters.

Charles D. "Danny" Hourigan

Wednesday, March 31, 1999

Hastings native Charles D. "Danny" Hourigan, 45, of Omaha died March 31, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services were April 3 at Hanscom Park United Methodist Church in Omaha with the Rev. Lawrence H. Moffet officiating. Burial was in Blair Cemetery in Blair. Heafey-Heafey-Hoffman and Cutler Funeral Home of Omaha was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hourigan was born Sept. 7, 1953, in Hastings to Robert and Vesta (Bacon) Beig. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington. He attended Hartington Public School and graduated in 1971. He attended Wayne State College in Wayne. In September 1977 he married Sandy Ward. He worked in the engineering department of the Nebraska Department of Roads. Later he had his own business.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Katie Jean of Omaha; his parents of Hartington; five sisters, Jeannie Lammers of Spencer, Peg Wedel of Blair, Charlotte Martinez of Henderson, Colo., Jan Snook of Hartington and DeAnn Beig of Omaha; and one brother, Robert Beig Jr. of Jackpot, Nev.

Joy K. Simpson

Wednesday, April 28, 1999

Former Hastings resident Joy K. Simpson, 76, of Kenesaw died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Kenesaw Haven Home.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Brand Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Burial is in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Simpson was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Red Cloud to Clyde and Nina (Kinley) Simpson. He attended elementary school in Red Cloud and moved to Hastings in 1950. He worked for many years at Woodward's Disposal. He retired in 1985.

Paul E. Garrison

Wednesday, June 9, 1999

Hastings resident Paul E. Garrison, 64, of 718 Valley Chase Ave., died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at his home.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Mr. Garrison was born Dec. 4, 1934, to Hobart and Mary (Cibolski) Garrison in Norton, Kan. He graduated from Norton High School in Norton. From 1955-59, he served in the U.S. Navy. In 1959, he married LaVetta Ricmann in Norton. In 1960, he and his wife moved to Hastings where he worked for Hastings Irrigation. He retired Jan. 1.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree and VFW Post No. 1346.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Pamela Vaccher of Skokie, Ill., and Carol Myers of Scottsbluff; three brothers, Harold of Arlington, Texas, Raymond of Norton and Hobart of Pueblo, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Stephen and Alan.

Memorials may be given to the Adams County Cancer Society.
