S. Dorothy Shottenkirk

Saturday, June 12, 1999

Hastings resident S. Dorothy (Isaac) Shottenkirk, 82, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Beatrice. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shottenkirk was born Oct. 2, 1916, to Abraham and Helena (Dick) Isaac in Meade County, Kan. On Feb. 3, 1934, she marred James Willet Shottenkirk in Washington, Kan. He died Aug. 25, 1988. She worked as a seamstress in Beatrice. She retired and moved to Hastings in 1987.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Ruby Mueller of Gretna; two sons, Herb of Hastings and Robert of Clinton, Utah; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Walker; five brothers; one stepsister; one stepbrother and two grandchildren.

Memorials will be established.

Thomas M. 'Mike' Mahoney

Monday, June 28, 1999

Hastings resident Thomas M. "Mike" Mahoney, 76, of 423 New York Ave., died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Christopher Kubat officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mr. Mahoney was born March 25, 1923, to John and Catherine (Rosschaert) Mahoney in Spalding. He graduated from Spalding High School. From 1943-45, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He flew 35 bombing missions during the war and was a radio operator in B-17s. He received the European African Mid-Eastern campaign medal with three bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal with five bronze clusters, one Service Stripe and the Distinguished Flying Cross. On Oct. 7, 1950, he married Margaret Porter in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1952 they moved to Hastings where he worked as a mason. On July 26, 1996, his wife died.

He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Rebecca Mahoney of Hutchinson, Kan., and Michele Finnigsmier of Hastings; one son, Michael of Hastings; one brother, Leo "Knobby" of Spalding; one sister, Catherine Griffin of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristy; three sisters; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Robert R. Ellermeier

Monday, June 28, 1999

Bruning resident Robert R. Ellermeier, 86, died Monday, June 28, 1999, in Geneva.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Bruning. Visitation begins 11 a.m. Thursday at the Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Ellermeier was born April 6, 1913, to Manuel and Anna (Lobeda) Ellermeier in Clay Center. In 1931 he graduated from Clay Center High School in Clay Center. On Dec. 30, 1937, he married Irene Hinrichs. They moved near Glenvil and lived there for four years. They then farmed in Fillmore and Thayer counties. In 1943 he and his family purchased land near Bruning where they moved to farm.

Survivors are his wife; five daughters, Dorothy Elliott of Wilcox, Ruth Starck and Janice Rubin, both of Houston, JoAnn Hohensee of Blair and Marilyn Neville of Lincoln; one brother, Louis of Scribner; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

William G. 'Bud' Pauley Jr.

Tuesday, June 29, 1999

Hastings resident William G. "Bud" Pauley Jr., 72, of 740 Madden Road, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Memorial services are 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Private burial will be prior to services. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pauley was born April 28, 1927, to William "Bill" Sr. and Bessie (Cattle) Pauley in Hastings. In 1946 he graduated from Hastings Senior High School. In 1951 he graduated from Hastings College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Dec. 28, 1950, he married Glenda McManigal. He was president of the Pauley Lumber Co. and was involved in 27 businesses. He also was a pilot for 50 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lochland Country Club, VFW, Elks Lodge, Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Hastings Lodge No. 50 A.F. and A.M. He also had been a member of the Skyriders and Optimist.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Rhonda Pauley and Renee´ Pauley, both of Hastings; two sons, William III and Thomas, both of Hastings; three sisters, Harriet Callahan of Palm Coast, Fla., Mary Guenin of Latrobe, Pa., and Margaret Bowman of Fullerton; one brother, Robert of Hastings; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the Jerry Pauley Scholarship Fund at Hastings College.

Emma I. Berg

Hastings resident Emma I. Berg, 96, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery near Prosser. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Frieda Kalvoda Boehr

Tuesday, June 29, 1999

Hastings resident Frieda (Enninga) Kalvoda Boehr, 80, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Weldon Martens officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery at Ayr. Visitation is 12-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Boehr was born Jan. 24, 1919, to Dick and Hendrika (Dieken) Enninga in rural Adams County. She worked in Hastings for Mode O'Day as a seamstress and at Ben Sherman's in alterations and retired from Johnson Cashway as a sales clerk. In 1976 her first husband, Lawrence Kalvoda, died. She later married Elmer Boehr, who died in 1998. She lived in the Hastings area all her life except for eight recent years she spent in Henderson. She moved back to Hastings in 1998.

She was a member of the Mennonite Church in Henderson.

Survivors are three sons, Norman Kalvoda of Troy, Mich., Ronnie Kalvoda and Garry Kalvoda, both of Glenvil; two stepsons, Ron Boehr of California and Elmiron Boehr of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Carol Ott of Henderson; one brother, Herman Enninga of Holyoke, Colo.; six grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Blue Valley Cemetery or to the family.

Charles W. Cates

Monday, June 28, 1999

Superior resident Charles Wayne Cates, 54, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Broadstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at the Williams Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Frank Machovec officiating. Burial with full military honors by the Fort Riley Kansas Honor Guard will be in Bostwick Cemetery at Bostwick.

Mr. Cates was born March 4, 1945, to Charles and Evelyn (Ross) Cates in Miami. He grew up in Florida and attended schools there. In 1968 he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. After a two-year tour of duty in Vietnam, he was discharged, then re-enlisted and went on to serve a total of 211ˇ2 years before retiring from the Army. He earned the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commediation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and a Purple Heart. He worked with military telecommunications following his discharge and also taught at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Stewart, Ga., and also worked with Hughs Aircraft's military division. On April 6, 1991, he married Joyce (Messersmith) Clough in Killeen, Texas. They moved to Superior to be nearer his wife's family.

Survivors include his wife; three stepsons, Ronnie Clough of Killeen, Texas, Donnie Clough of Sulphor, La., and Junior Clough of Lake Charles, La.; one stepdaughter, Carol Clough of Buffalo, Mo.; his father of Dunnellon, Fla.; one sister, Judy Ayers of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Richard of Gillmore, Texas; eight stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Arza G. Warboys

Former Deweese resident Arza G. Warboys, 88, of Lincoln, died Friday, June 25, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home. Family will be present 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Warboys was born April 21, 1911, to Earl R. and Emma A. (Denney) Warboys in Deweese. From 1934-1975 he farmed in Lancaster County. He was also a former employee at the Lancaster County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and of the Lancaster County precinct assessor. He was married to Lucille Frances Warboys.

He was a charter member of the Trinity Chapel Church in Rokeby and a Red Cross volunteer.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Janice Ruliffson of Lincoln and Sharon Peterson of Avon, Colo.; one sister, Vera Fowler of Hastings; one brother, Elvin of Levittown, Pa.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Chapel Church in Rokeby or Milder Manor in Lincoln.

Lottie M. Yelken

Thursday, June 24, 1999

Franklin resident Lottie M. (Miller) Yelken, 92, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Franklin Nursing Center in Franklin.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Yelken was born Dec. 15, 1906, to John and Mina (Benton) Miller in Hardin, Mo. She spent her early years in Missouri and Oklahoma. The family later moved to Franklin. In 1926, she graduated from Franklin High School in Franklin. She also attended Hastings College in Hastings for a short time. On March 10, 1932, she married Lou Yelken in Macon. They lived in Macon and the Spring Valley Community. In 1979, they moved to Franklin. She had worked at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin and the Senior Center under the Green Thumb program in Franklin. On May 9, 1989, her husband died.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Franklin.

Survivors are one daughter, Betty Baker of Hays, Kan.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers; three sisters; and one grandchild.

James W. Creason

Saturday, June 26, 1999

Former Doniphan resident James William Creason, 56, of Saginaw, Texas, died Saturday, June 26, 1999.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home in Forth Worth, Texas. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Cathedral in Fort Worth with the Rev. Dennis Smith officiating.

Mr. Creason was born March 20, 1943, to Lyle and Margaret Edith (Riffey) Creason in Doniphan. In 1960 he graduated from Harvard High School in Harvard and joined the U.S. Air Force. On Nov. 6, 1960, he married Sharon K. Weitzel of Harvard. During his U.S. Air Force career, he maintained the fire control systems and served as a gunner on B-52s. He was chief of data automation. He was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado; Altus, Okla.; Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico; Rome, New York; U-Tapao, Thailand; Shreveport, La.; Rapid City, S.D.; Omaha; and Fort Worth. He received the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross Award and the Vietnam Service Medal. He earned an associate's degree from Tarrant County Community College in Fort Worth and a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University. In 1989 he became a certified professional manager. In 1985 he started working as a technical writer at Lockheed in Fort Worth.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Forth Worth, National Management Association, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign wars and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of Council 4101 of the Knights of Columbus and served as a past grand knight, a member of the Fourth Degree Knight in the General Worth Assembly,

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Kimberly Day of Fort Worth; two sons, Bryan of Phoenix and Michael of West Plains, Mo.; one sister, Dorothy Aspegren of Harvard; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Scholarship Fund of the Lockheed Martin Management Association, P.O. Box 748, Mail Zone 4285, Fort Worth, TX 76101, or to Doris Kupferle Breast Cancer Center, Harris Methodist Health Foundation, 301 Pennsylbania Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76104.

Harold Martin

Superior resident Harold Martin, 93, died Friday, June 25, 1999, in Superior.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Paul Albrecht and Connie Raess officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Martin was born Aug. 3, 1905, to Robert Andrew Reed and Martha Elizabeth (McCrory) Martin in Mount Clare. He attended school in Mount Clare and Nelson and lived in the Mount Clare and Bostwick area. In 1955 he moved to Superior. On Aug. 3, 1927, he married Helen McFarland. He farmed in the Superior area and owned the Martin Implement Co. of Superior. His wife died Dec. 25, 1982.

He was a lifetime member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Virginia L. Rhoads of Superior and Elaine Karnes of Poland, Ohio; two sons, Stephen of Crete and Richard of Fort Dodge, Kan.; one brother, Ray of Meridian, Idaho; 18 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by three sisters; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
