Hansen resident Gloria A. (Smith) Schlachter, 71, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mrs. Schlachter was born Jan. 15, 1928, to Forest and Daisy (Brogan) Smith in Surprise. She grew up in the Surprise and David City areas. In 1943 she moved to Hastings. In 1945, she graduated from Hastings Senior High School in Hastings. In 1946, she married Harlan Schlacter in Hastings. She began working for Dutton-Lainson Co. She later worked as the Deputy Adams County Register of Deeds.
She was a member of the First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Adams County Extension Club, Hastings High School Alumni Association and the Elks Auxiliary.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Vickie Hesselgesser of Highland Village, Texas; two sisters, Pat Grannis of Cameron Park, Calif., and Yvonne Loy of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three sons, Bill and Mike, both of Grand Island, and Roger of Atoka, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the First St. Paul's Lutheran Church kitchen fund.
Issac M. 'Ike' Grabill

Blue Hill resident Issac M. "Ike" Grabill, 95, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at the Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.
Mr. Grabill was born Sept. 15, 1903, to Samuel and Emma (Martin) Grabill in Adams County. In 1922, he graduated from Roseland High School. He farmed in the Roseland area. On Sept. 27, 1930, he married Ada Showalter. In 1985 he moved to Hastings. His wife died Sept. 18, 1995.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings. He was a former Adams County supervisor and served on the Roseland Co-op Elevator and Roseland Rural Fire Department boards. He was a charter member of the Roseland Lions Club.
Survivors are three daughters, Wauneta Schiefelbein of Hastings, Marilyn Krueger of Norfolk and Diann Schmidt of Blue Hill; one son, Robert of Hastings; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Grace United Methodist Church or the Blue Hill Care Center.
Doral D. Herman

Riverton resident Doral D. Herman, 74, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Franklin with the Revs. Dwain Fowler and Frank Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Franklin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and 1 p.m. until services Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Herman was born Sept. 11, 1924, to Otto and Mabel (Shadlow) Herman near Riverton. He attended Spring Valley and District No. 18 schools. In 1942, he graduated from Franklin High School. On Sept. 25, 1949, he married Esther Dirks in Marion, S.D. From 1949-50, they farmed in South Dakota. They moved to a farm near Franklin in 1950.
He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Franklin, served on the church board and was a member of the Happy Hooligans Band.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Lois Miller of Kearney; two sons, Art of Hastings and Harlan of Inavale; one sister, Lucetta Bierhaus of Campbell; and four grandchildren.
Gail R. Reichert

Hastings resident Gail R. (Jennings) Reichert, 76, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, in Lincoln.
Memorial services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. C.J. Willis and the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bruning Public Cemetery in Bruning. Visitation is at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mrs. Reichert was born Dec. 9, 1922, to Melvin and Flora (Morrison) Jennings in Davenport. On April 16, 1961, she married Eldon W. Reichert. He died in 1990. In 1994, she moved from Bruning to Hastings.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bruning, past president of United Methodist Women, secretary for church Sunday school and member of the United Methodist Women Circle No. 5 of Hastings. She also was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Alumni Association and OES Davenport Chapter 286 and former member of the Thayer County Community Theater board of directors.
Survivors are two daughters, Kathy Stofer of Hastings and Barbara Bunner of Boise, Idaho; one son, Jack Bunner of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Helen Williams of Laguna Woods, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Gail Jennings Reichert Endowed Scholarship.
Jean M. Ensley-Steiner

Former Guide Rock resident Jean M. (Johnson) Ensley-Steiner, 73, of Grand Island, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Curtis Holzworth officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Ensley-Steiner was born Dec. 15, 1925, to Neils and Ella (Everly) Johnson in Maxwell. She attended schools in Grand Island and Kansas City, Mo. In 1943, she graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City. On Sept. 23, 1944, she married Al "Aden" Ensley in Kansas City. They lived in Grand Island where she was a partner in Ensley Electric Co. of Grand Island. On Dec. 31, 1974, she married Jim Steiner in Red Cloud. They lived in Guide Rock. In 1979 she graduated from the School of Practical Nursing in Kearney as a licensed practical nurse. Her husband died in 1981. She then returned to Grand Island and worked at the Nebraska Veteran's Home and Riverside Lodge, both in Grand Island.
Survivors are one daughter, Carol Nelson of Grand Island; three sons, Craig Ensley of Grand Island, Allan Ensley of Lincoln and Tomas Ensley of Alhambra, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
Robert S. Potter

Franklin resident Robert S. Potter, 81, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services were to be 2 p.m. today at the Congregational Church of Christ in Franklin with the Revs. Baron Cole and Nancy Cole officiating. Burial was to be in Free Water Cemetery in Wilcox. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Potter was born Aug. 7, 1917, to Ward and Alice (Gochnauer) Potter near Wilcox. He graduated from Wilcox High School in 1935. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's two year agricultural course. In 1940, he married Velma Goedeken, who later died. On Feb. 26, 1944, he married Katy Schurman at Pleasant View Church in Wilcox. He farmed south of Wilcox. In 1975 he retired and moved to Franklin.
He was a former member of the Pleasant View Christian Church in the Ash Grove Community. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Franklin. He also had been a member of the Wilcox, Franklin and Macon Lions clubs. He was a member of the Franklin Country Club.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mary Nelson of Hildreth; two sons, Bob and Lee, both of Wilcox; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
LeeRoy Hendrickson

Shickley resident LeeRoy Hendrickson, 74, died Friday, June 18, 1999, in Lincoln.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stockholm Lutheran Church near Shickley with the Rev. Jonathan Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Swedish Cemetery in Shickley. Visitation starts at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mr. Hendrickson was born April 23, 1925, to Albert and Lillie (Ljungdahl) Hendrickson in Shickley. In 1942 he graduated from Shickley High School in Shickley. He served two years in the U.S. Army in Korea. On June 26, 1960, he married Sheila Johnson. He farmed near Shickley.
He was a member of the Stockholm Lutheran Church in Stockholm.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Loree Hendrickson of Lincoln; one son, Dan of Shickley; two brothers, Maurice and Richard, both of Shickley; four sisters, Norma Hendrickson of Shickley, Melba Replogle of Santa Barbara, Calif., Zelpha Burbank of Los Angeles and Euhla Mae Sharp of Willmette, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Stockholm Lutheran Church.
Ernest O. Rief

Hastings resident Ernest O. Rief, 84, of 2007 Boyce St. died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Cedarview Cemetery near Doniphan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Mr. Rief was born Sept. 9, 1914, to Edward and Emilie (Siegert) Rief in Doniphan. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1933. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45, spending 3 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater with the 808th Corps of Engineers. He received the Distinguished Unit badge, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a U.S. Postal Service postal clerk for 41 years, retiring Jan. 28, 1983.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Postal Workers Union Local No. 311 SCF and the Eagles. He was a life member of the American Legion, DAV, Cooties and VFW Post No. 1346, where he received the Distinguished Quartermaster Award for 1983-84.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to Faith Lutheran Church.
Ray L. Mowrey

Former Sutton resident Ray L. Mowrey, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton with the Rev. Alex J. Walker officiating. Burial, with military rites provided by Argonne American Legion Post No. 61 of Sutton, will be in Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Mowrey was born June 13, 1919, to Herbert Sr. and Alma O. (Allberry) Mowrey near Miller. He attended rural country school near Miller. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1969, he married Loma Detty in Boulder, Colo. They raised their niece, Cami Detty. In 1972, they moved to Sutton. He was a feed salesman for the Moorman Co. for 20 years. His wife died April 5, 1993. He moved to Lexington in 1994, to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island in December 1998 and the Nebraska Veterans Home in May.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton and the American Legion in Sutton and Lexington.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Hollenbeck of Lexington and Debora Hodgin of South Sioux City; three sons, Daniel of Greenfield, Ind., Ron of Weeping Water and Kelly of Omaha; one stepdaughter, Melodee Ackland of Grafton; one stepson, David Peddycoart of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Herbert Jr. of York and Bill of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one son, John, and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton or the family.
Ervin J. Mangers Sr.

Hastings resident Ervin J. Mangers Sr., 89, of Good Samaritan Village Goldbeck Towers died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at GSV Villa Grace.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at GSV All Saints Chapel with the Rev. Christopher Kubat officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to services Monday at All Saints Chapel.
Mr. Mangers was born March 14, 1910, to John and Anna (Pittz) Mangers in Adams County. On Jan. 23, 1934, he married Martha Beiriger in Assumption. He moved from a farm south of Roseland to Hastings in 1959. He worked for H & M. He later was laundry department manager at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1974.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Marvin of Minden; two daughters, Vonnie Lee of Grand Island and Betty Smidt of Pauline; one brother, John of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Margaret Phillips of Waverly and Dorothy Larsen of Buhl, Idaho; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death two sons, Jerry and Ervin Jr.; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.
Irene Mouer

Former area resident Irene (Reichstein) Mouer, 96, of Gothenburg died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital -- Long Term.
Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Blue Hill with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg and 10 a.m. until services Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Mouer was born Nov. 7, 1902, to William and Adelia (Emigh) Reichstein in Atlantic, Iowa. The family lived on a farm eight miles northeast of Campbell. They moved into Campbell, where she graduated from high school. She worked as a printer for the Campbell Citizen. In 1934 the family moved to Blue Hill, where her father and brother operated a flour mill. She worked as a printer for the Blue Hill Leader. She cared her parents until her mother died in 1948 and her father died in 1962. In 1964, she retired as a printer. On Feb. 14, 1965, she married J. Edgar Mouer of Hastings. They lived in Blue Hill. He died in September 1986. She moved to Gothenburg in March 1998.
Survivors are three stepdaughters, LaRue Bagley of Arrowhead, Calif., Cynthia Mouer of Portland, Ore., and Aggie Mouer of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three stepsons, Tim of Scottsdale, Ariz., Roger of Antioch, Calif., and Tom of Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Evelyn Hamer of Longview, Calif.; one brother, Deb Reichstein of Gothenburg; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one stepson, Homer; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church in Blue Hill.
