Fara P. Harms

Thursday, June 17, 1999

Former Glenvil resident Fara Pauline (Stansbury) Harms, 90, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Glenvil Cemetery at Glenvil. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mrs. Harms was born March 21, 1909, to Ancel and Laura (Bradley) Stansbury in Deweese. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1927. She taught school at Anandale, south of Glenvil, for two years. On March 3, 1929, she married Fred Harms in Glenvil. She was a homemaker on the family farm near Glenvil. She moved to GSV in 1983.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and Silver Bells Extension Club at GSV. She served on the Hanover Township Election Board for many years.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Leslie of Hastings; one sister, Beulah Walthers of Cuba, Kan.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, GSV or the Diabetes Association.

Margaret 'Peggy' Welch

Saturday, June 12, 1999

Former Hastings resident Margaret "Peggy" (Mabie) Welch, 55, of Waukesha, Wis., died Saturday, June 12, 1999, as the result of a car accident in Turtle Lake Township, Wis.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Prescott United Church of Christ in Prescott, Wis., with the Rev. David Roberts officiating. The remains were cremated. Burial will be Pine Glen Cemetery at Prescott. Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home of Prescott is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Welch was born June 17, 1943, to Warren and Helen Mabie in New Jersey. On June 7, 1967, she married William Welch.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Britta Welch and Amy Welch; and one son, William R. Welch; two sisters, Elizabeth Mabie and Kathy Mabie; and three brothers, Thomas, Stephen and Jeffery.

Donald T. Eller

Monday, June 14, 1999

Harvard resident Donald T. Eller, 84, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Hastings with the Very Rev. Richard Martindale officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.

Mr. Eller was born May 9, 1915, to Charles J. and Hilda (Lanham) Eller at Harvard. He graduated from Harvard High School in 1934. He worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in the 1930s. He then served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. He farmed in the Harvard area most of his life.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Harvard and St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Hastings. He sang for many years in men's quartets. He was a volunteer fireman in Harvard for 39 years.

He is survived by a twin brother, Gerald of Harvard.

A memorial has been established.

Gary Lilyhorn

Sunday, June 13, 1999

Hastings resident Gary Lilyhorn, 65, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, in Hastings.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday at Sandstrom Cemetery near Bertrand with the Rev. Tom Thompson officiating. Visitation with the family present is 6-9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Lilyhorn was born Sept. 19, 1933, to Bernard and Luella (Markquardt) Lilyhorn in Bertrand. He grew up in the Holdrege-Funk area. He graduated from Axtell High School. He farmed north of Axtell and later became a self-employed truck driver. He moved to Kearney in 1980 and Hastings in 1997.

Survivors are one son, Tim of Grand Island; one daughter, Vicki Lilyhorn of Beatrice; one brother, Daryl of Holdrege; two sisters, Bernadine Renkin of Smithfield and Sally Ann Johnson of Holdrege; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Robert M. McDonald

Sunday, June 13, 1999

Hastings resident Robert Martin McDonald, 82, of 233 N. Hastings Ave., died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter-Breland Mortuary in McCook. Burial with masonic rites will be in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook.

Mr. McDonald was born July 2, 1916, to Alexander Campbell and Elizabeth (Yost) McDonald in McCook. He graduated from McCook Public Schools in 1935. That year, he married E. Fern Stevens of McCook. He worked at Brown McDonald Store, before beginning his lifetime career in 1936 with the then CB&Q Railroad. He retired in 1978 after serving as a switchman, yardmaster and conductor in the McCook division.

He was a 42-year member of Memorial United Methodist Church, a life member of the Elks and a 61-year member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, which later merged with the UTU. He was an active Mason for 38 years, serving as presiding officer of every local York Rite body. He was a member of the Knights of the York Cross of Honor, and past Grand Illustrious Master of the Grand Council Cryptic Masons of Nebraska. He also twice served as Worthy Patron of the Eureka Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a life sponsor of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, personally transporting children from their Nebraska homes to the Shrine Children's Hospital in Minnesota.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Donald of Lincoln; two daughters, Sharon Morrison of Whitefish, Mont., and Honey Lou Bonar of Hastings; two brothers, Byron of Overland Park, Kan., and Donald of McCook; one sister, LaVaughn Seeman of Denver; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Shrine Children's Hospital.

Daisy Keppel

Monday, June 14, 1999

Hebron resident Daisy Keppel, 80, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home chapel in Hebron with the Rev. Jonathan Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hebron. Visitation is 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and one-half hour prior to services at the chapel.

Miss Keppel was born Dec. 23, 1918.

Memorials may be given to Blue Valley Lutheran Home.

Florence S. French

Saturday June 12, 1999

Former Hastings resident Florence S. (Smith) French, 88, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Saturday June 12, 1999, in Pompano Beach.

Services were to be 3 p.m. today at John Knox Village Chapel in Pompano Beach with the Rev. William Sims officiating. Burial was to be in Pompano Beach Cemetery. Kraeer Pompano Beach Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. French was born Dec. 8, 1910, to George W. and Carrie (Grassley) Smith in Albany, N.Y. She received a master's degree from the University of the State of New York. In 1936, she married William Marshall French. For nine years, he served as president of Hastings College in Hastings. He also was associated with New York State Teachers College in Albany; Muskingham College in New Concord, Ohio; Macalaster College in St. Paul, Minn.; and Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. She and her husband moved to John Knox Village in Pompano Beach in 1983.

Survivors are one son, Geoffrey S. of Lincoln; and two grandchildren.

Minnie H. Brudevold

Sunday, June 13, 1999

Hebron resident Minnie H. (George) Uphoff George Brudevold, 100, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home chapel with the Rev. Bruce Berggren officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Cemetery at Gladstone. Visitation is at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mrs. Brudevold was born Oct. 8, 1898, to Herman and Gesine (Arians) George at Gilead. She attended school District 81 and Gilead Public Schools. In 1920, she married Carl Uphoff. They farmed northeast of Gilead and later, southeast of Gilead. Her husband died Sept. 2, 1926. In 1929, she married John George. They divorced in 1932. She and her children moved from Kansas to Nebraska to care for her father. She remained on the farm with her mother until she moved to Hebron in 1942. In 1945, she married Ed Brudevold in Hebron. He died in 1967. She worked for many years at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron.

Survivors are one son, Don George of Lincoln; one daughter, Dorothy Urbanek of Long Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the home or the church.

Robert J. Badger Jr.

Saturday, June 12, 1999

Burr Oak, Kan., resident Robert J. Badger Jr., 71, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Burr Oak with the Revs. Laura Fricker and Lester Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato, Kan. Visitation is until 9:30 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Belleville, Kan.

Mr. Badger was born July 11, 1927, to Robert J. Sr. and Ida Lee Badger at Webber, Kan.

He was a long-time Jewell County, Kan., resident. He was a retired welder and mechanic, who worked with the Jewell County Highway Department. On April 17, 1949, he married Leah Morrow.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Blaine of Garden City, Kan., and Harlan of Hastings; two daughters, Elaine Stafford of Formoso, Kan., and Laura Rose of Campbell; one brother, Roland of Mankato; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Harley Jensen

Sunday, June 13, 1999

Superior resident Harley Jensen, 83, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Hardy with the Rev. Howard Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mr. Jensen was born Nov. 17, 1915, to Jens Marinus and Anna Marie (Nicholaisen) Jensen on a farm near Hardy. He attended school in Hardy. On May 24, 1937, he married Carla Petersen. They lived in Denver; Republic, Kan.; Hardy; Ruskin and Superior.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin for 47 years and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hardy at the time of his death. He also was a member of Eagles Lodge 3101 and Elks Lodge 2197, both of Superior, and Danish Brotherhood of Ruskin.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Merwin of Goodland, Kan.; one daughter, Janice Ostergaard of Omaha; two brothers, Otto of Eugene, Ore., and Clair of Hastings; two sisters, Marion Nelson of Lynchburg, Va., and Clara Marie Madsen of Eugene; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and a great-grandchild.

Eldon Peterson

Monday, June 14, 1999

Kearney County resident Eldon Peterson, 83, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church south of Axtell with the Rev. David Evenson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Peterson was born April 19, 1916, in Omaha. His parents were Ernest and Lillie (Nelson) Peterson. He grew up in the Axtell area and attended Minden High School through 11th grade. On May 23, 1936, he married Hazel Harwager. They lived and farmed near Axtell. His wife died June 3, 1971. On Aug. 30, 1972, he married Erleen Jensen Granger. She died in 1996.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

Survivors are one son, Ellery of Axtell; two stepdaughters, LaRae Worden of Norfolk and Sandy Johnson of Minden; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by twin infant daughters.

A memorial fund has been established.
