Clarence W. 'Bill' Stutesman

Monday, May 31, 1999

Former Tribland resident Clarence William "Bill" Stutesman, 74, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Monday, May 31, 1999, at his home.

Military services were June 4 at Phoenix Memorial Park in Phoenix. Phoenix Memorial Mortuary of Phoenix was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stutesman was born Feb. 9, 1925, to Ed and Blanch Stutesman in Guide Rock. In 1944 he graduated from Guide Rock High School in Guide Rock. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. On Jan. 19, 1947, he married Erma Hines of Superior.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Connie Turner of Arizona; one son, Larry of Arizona; one sister, Velma R. Albin of Hastings; one brother, Frank of Hastings; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister..

James E. 'Ed' McReynolds

Thursday, June 10, 1999

Harvard resident James Edwin "Ed" McReynolds, 63, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at a later date. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McReynolds was born July 20, 1935, to Guy E. and Veda (Seybolt) McReynolds in Lincoln. On June 30, 1957, he married Jan Cockerill. In 1975 he moved to Harvard from the Gretna-Ashland area. He worked as a research technician at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat and Animal Research Center near Clay Center. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Gretna and Farm House fraternity at UNL. He was a past member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Gretna-Ashland.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Jacy Davis of Encinitus, Calif.; one son, Guy C. of Gretna; and one brother, David of Ashland.

Memorials may be given to Mary Lanning Hospice or M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic at the University of Texas.

Wilma L. Harman

Hastings resident Wilma L. Harman, 90, of 1401 N. Hastings Ave. died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Mortuary of Hastings.

Former Hastings resident Linda Darling Holtz, 60, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Friday, June 11, 1999, in Las Vegas.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

John 'Floyd' Florea

Thursday, June 10, 1999

Lebanon, Kan., resident John "Floyd" Florea, 90, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, Kan.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Cora Cemetery in Smith County, Kan.

Mr. Florea was born Feb. 24, 1909, to Joseph C. and Mary Ida (Barr) Florea near Lebanon. He attended rural schools in Smith County and graduated from Lebanon High School. He was employed for a time with the Kansas Roads Department and also farmed in the Lebanon area. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. After the war, he was involved in a business partnership, working projects in Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska. In 1959 he returned to Lebanon and worked as a carpenter. In 1974 he retired.

He was a member of the Lebanon VFW Post.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Quentene Olsen

Services for Minden resident Quentene (Anderson) Olsen, 78, who died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney are 2 p.m. July 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kearney with the Rev. Teresa Chamberlain officiating. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Emma I. Berg

Tuesday, June 29, 1999

Hastings resident Emma I. Berg, 96, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery near Prosser. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, with the family present 7-8 p.m., at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Miss Berg was born Sept. 13, 1902, to August and Augusta (Mietzner) Berg in Kenesaw. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in Hastings in 1922. In 1923 she graduated from Pratt Business College in Hastings. From 1923-29, she worked for the Hayland Bank in Hayland. From 1929-40, she worked as Adams County Deputy Clerk. From 1940-70, she worked as the Adams County Clerk. She retired in 1970.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, past secretary-treasurer of Nebraska County Clerks and Registers of Deeds Association and a past member of the Chamber of Commerce Women's Division. She served on the Nebraska County Clerks Legislative Committee.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Memorials may be given to Concordia Cemetery Association.

Lutannies A. 'Lou' Hogerson

Monday, June 28, 1999

Grand Island resident Lutannies A. "Lou" Hogerson, 79, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Richard Urbach officiating. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Freedom Cemetery in Funk. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Hogerson worked as a photographer in many studios, including one in Hastings.

Omer 'Buck' Long

Monday, June 28, 1999

Red Cloud resident Omer L. "Buck" Long, 76, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Andrew Kumpkin officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Red Cloud Cemetery in Red Cloud. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Long was born Sept. 20, 1922, to Louis Nathan and Ola Mary (Patton) Long in Stella, Mo. He moved with his family to the Franklin area at a young age. He attended rural Franklin County schools. In 1942 he graduated from Franklin High School in Franklin. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a PT boat in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. After his discharge, he returned to Franklin and was employed for the construction of the Harlan County Dam near Republican City. On June 24, 1948, he married Ella Christena Baetz in Smith Center, Kan. They lived in Franklin where he owned and operated a service station. In 1960, they moved to Red Cloud and he became an agent for State Farm Insurance. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud, the Red Cloud Sidlo VFW Post No. 5641, and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Cheryl Long of Kutztown, Pa., Jo Ellen Bass of Omaha and Lizabeth Rasser of Red Cloud; one son, Patrick of Red Cloud; four brothers, Kenneth and Keith, both of Franklin, Bill of Ord and Bob of Columbus; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Gerald N. 'Jerry' Gauthier

Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000

Former Hastings resident Gerald N. "Jerry" Gauthier, 73, of Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Phelps County Hospital in Holdrege.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Gauthier was born May 20, 1926, to Lucien and Petronolene (Grant) Gauthier in Willow City, N.D. He graduated from Rolla High School in North Dakota. From 1944-46 he served in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to Hastings. On June 7, 1949, he married Jean Mary Roth in Hastings. They lived in Hastings where he worked in drywall construction and was the former owner of ArtCraft Drywall Co. His wife preceded him in death. He moved to Holdrege three years ago.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Survivors are three daughters, Mary Ann Melfi of Williamsburg, Va., Kim Oerter of Holdrege and Gail Bailey of Jefferson, Wis.; five sons, Anthony J. of Grand Island, Mike of Aurora, Jeff of Loveland, Colo., Bill of Lincoln and Patrick of Providence, R.I.; two sisters, Theresa Olson of Rochester, Minn., and Rosemary Schweitzer of Lincoln; five brothers, Ernest and Armand, both of Hastings, Leo of Lincoln, Marlin of Omaha and Francis of Grand Island; and 13 grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanette Marie; and one sister.

Memorials may go to the donor's choice.

Laura M. Phillips

Hastings resident Laura Marie Phillips, 93, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at her home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Mary J. Scholtz

Monday, Jan. 12, 2000

Former Hastings resident Mary Jo (Frasier) Scholtz, 73, of Grand Island, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m.

Mrs. Scholtz was born Jan. 28, 1926, to Charles and Maude (Ready) Frasier in Hastings. She grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings Senior High School. On Aug. 23, 1946, she married Raymond Scholtz in Hastings. She worked as a dental assistant. Later, she and her husband moved to Grand Island. On Dec. 30, 1978, her husband died. She then worked at Engleman School in Grand Island as a crossing guard and lunch room attendant.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Hastings High School Alumni. She also was active in Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls.

Survivors are three sons, Michael of Omaha, Jeffrey of Grand Island and Douglas of Scottsbluff; two daughters, Susan Peplow of Springfield and Amy Jo Svoboda of Firth; one sister, Eva Taylor of Yuma, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by four sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Research Division of the American Heart Association.

Bertha L. Fritz

Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000

Minden resident Bertha L. (Lieske) Fritz, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Lancaster Manor in Lincoln.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Fritz was born Nov. 7, 1910, to Ferdinand and Emma (Janssen) Lieske near Upland. She grew up near Upland and attended school there. On Sept. 27, 1934, she married Leland Fritz. They lived in Upland until 1956 when they moved to Minden. She worked for J.M. McDonald's in Minden and then for Pioneer Village in Minden for 19 years. In 1987 her husband died.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors are one daughter, LaVonne "Vonnie" Sanders of Lincoln; one son, Bruce of Hastings; one brother, Gerald of Kearney; one sister, Dorothy Kimle of Hastings; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Ralph Williams

Dec. 12, 1999

Former Lawrence resident Ralph Louis Williams, 78, of White Salmon, Wash., died Dec. 12, 1999, in Lake Stevens, Wash.

Services were held Dec. 17 at Gardner Funeral Home chapel in White Salmon.

Mr. Williams was born Feb. 2, 1921, to Ralph and Margaret Caroline (Dean) Williams in Lawrence. He served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. On Jan. 29, 1946, he married Pauline E. Arends in Lincoln. He worked as a truck driver.

He was a member of the American Legion Kent-Kailey Post No. 45 in Lawrence and was a Nebraska adjutant to the National American Legion Convention in Washington, D.C. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Hastings and White Salmon.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Richard of White Salmon; two brothers, Robert of Garden City, Kan., and James of Lawrence; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Grace Baptist Church in White Salmon.
