Frankie J. Johnson

Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000

Hastings resident Frankie Joy (Gehm) Johnson, 80, of Village Terrace, 315 S. First Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Judith Allen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 4, 1920, to Henry A. and Florence E. (Hennen) Gehm in Huron, S.D. She graduated from Fremont High School in Fremont. On Nov. 6, 1945, she married Kenneth L. Johnson in Marysville, Kan. They moved to Hastings from Fremont in 1955. She worked at S.S. Kresege's, Geyerman's, Crowley's and Schwesers, from which she retired. Her husband died Aug. 18, 1981.

She was a member of First Christian Church. She attended the monthly Schweser's coffee and was active at Good Samaritan Village. She was a former Boy Scouts leader and Foster Grandparent at Alcott School.

Survivors are one son, Rodney of Hastings; one daughter, Sandy Shaw of Roseland; two sisters, Nancy Pettit of Fremont and Eleanor House of Chamberlain, S.D.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Harlin Lynn Stewart

Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000

Smith Center, Kan., resident Harlin Lynn Stewart, 71, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Smith County Hospital Long Term Care in Smith Center.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Simmons Mortuary in Smith Center with the Rev. John Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Round Spring Cemetery at Hunter, Kan. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday.

Mr. Stewart was born Aug. 19, 1928, to Glen and Irene Belle (Nible) Stewart in Lincoln, Kan. He married Sheila Stothard on Oct. 15, 1955. He was a farmer and cattle buyer. He was veteran of the Air Force.

He was member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Smith Center and the Harlan church in Harlan, Kan.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Glenda Wentworth of Edwards, Colo.; five sons, Stephen and David, both of Smith Center, Kim of Hays, Kan., Kyle of Hastings, and Eric of Salina, Kan.; four brothers, Harold of McCool Junction, Wayne of Hutchinson, Kan., Don of Houston and Thayne of Alabama; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Harlin L. Stewart Scholarship Fund.

Allan 'Al' Gintzel

Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000

Hebron resident Allan "Al" Gintzel, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in Hebron.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home chapel in Hebron with the Rev. Dr. Donald F. Davidson officiating. There will be no visitation. The remains were cremated.

Mr. Gintzel was born Feb. 17, 1911, to Paul P. and Emma (Kugler) Gintzel in Toledo, Ohio. He attended Toledo University in Toledo. He was a retired auto parts salesman, having lived in Toledo; Kansas City, Mo.; Overland Park, Kan.; and Roeland Park, Kan. On Oct. 22, 1938, he married Jeannette Watson in Tiffin, Ohio.

He was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Praire Village, Kan. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Service Corps of Retired Executives and the Fire District No. 2 board in Johnson City, Kan.

Survivors are his wife, one son, William A. of Lenexa, Kan.; one daughter, Mary Beth Johnson of Hebron; one sister, Katherine Gilchrist of Ellenton, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.

Harm F. Harms

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Former Glenvil resident Harm F. Harms, 102, of Marshall, Texas, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Marshall.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Spiritual Life Center at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall with Leslie Harms officiating. The body was donated to Southwest Medical Center at the University of Texas. Sullivan Funeral Home in Marshall was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harms was born Nov. 5, 1897, to John and Motje Harms in Glenvil. On July 20, 1926, he married Polly Titus. He received a bachelor's degree from Kearney State Teachers College, a master's degree from the University of Nebraska and his doctorate from Columbia University in New York. He began his teaching career at Mulberry Grove Rural School near Glenvil. He also taught at Hebron Academy in Hebron. He was a department head at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, taught at various colleges and universities, and for 10 years was president of the Territorial College of Guam. After retiring in 1967, he joined the faculty of East Texas Baptist Univeristy in Marshall for 12 years. He wrote many books and textbooks in the fields of business management and music appreciation. His most recent book as "Living to 100 the Harms Way." His wife died in 1985.

He was active in Good Shepard Lutheran Church of Marshall, the Gideon Society, Lions Club International and the American Red Cross.

Survivors are one daughter, Annette Brady of Marshall; one brother, Fred Harms of Hastings; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Lennita; two sisters and three brothers.

Memorials may be sent to Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 1007 East Pine Crest Drive, Marshall, TX 75670.

Ellen E. Monfross

Friday, Feb. 18, 2000

Hastings resident Ellen E. Monfross, 90, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Perkins.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Monfross was born June 29, 1909, to Charles and Ethel (Sanborn) Monfross in Hastings. She graduated in 1927 from Hastings Senior High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Hastings College in 1932 and her master's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1950. She taught speech and English and was a drama coach at Seward, Hampton and various other Nebraska schools.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Retired Teacher's Association. She also was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Harry J. Obitz

Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000

Red Cloud resident Harry J. Obitz, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Stanley Schieffer officiating. Burial with military services will be at Red Cloud Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Obitz was born Nov. 11, 1911, to Harry and Charlotte (Sorensen) Obitz in Marin County, Calif. A San Rafael, Calif., area native, Obitz became a golf professional, winning his first tournament in 1928. A former Professional Golfers Association golf tour professional, he played the tour in the 1930s and entered the 1932 British Open in Scotland. He is best-known in golf as co-founder with Dick Farley of "Swing's the Thing" golf schools. He also was credited with Craig Wood for first establishing golf in the Bahamas. He was head professional for years at Shawnee on the Delaware golf resort in Pennsylvania for musician Fred Waring. He was a World War II veteran, serving from 1941 to 1945 as Chief Petty Officer in charge of sea-going tugs. On Jan. 3, 1947, he married Helen Gertrude Frame at Red Cloud. They lived in Red Cloud while he traveled extensively around the world with his golf business. From the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, he was director of golf for the Bahamian government. He was instrumental in designing a number of golf courses, including Lochland Country Club in Hastings and the Red Cloud Golf Course, and consulted in the building of Heritage Hills in McCook. He wrote several books about golf, including "Six Days to Better Golf," with partner, Dick Farley. He was instructional editor for Golf Magazine for 36 years. His wife died Nov. 18, 1984.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was inducted into the Northern California and Nebraska golf halls of fame. He was a charter member of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Education Foundation; served on the Webster County Community Hospital Foundation board; and was past president of the South Platte United Chambers of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the PGA of America, life member of the Vallejo, Calif., Elks Lodge No. 559 and Golf Writers Association of America; and was a member of the Red Cloud Chamber of Commerce and Webster County Museum.

Survivors are one son, Benson of Chico, Calif.; and one brother, John Mino of Monte Rio, Calif.

Memorials may be given to the Red Cloud High School Athletic Fund.

Francis D. Rose

Friday, Feb. 18, 2000

Fairmont resident Francis D. Rose, 75, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, in Wilber.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont with the Rev. Betsy Gallaway-Carew officiating. Private burial will be at a later date with military honors conducted by Lt. Forbes American Legion Post No. 21. Visitation is at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Rose was born April 7, 1924, to James and Nora (Lynch) Rose in Fairmont.

Survivors are his wife, Della; one son, William of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Judy Vacek of Papillion, Jan Morrison of Littleton, Colo., and Beverly Buhr of Beatrice; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Fairmont Senior Center, American Legion Post No. 21, Fairmont Fire and Rescue or the church.

Freda Mattison

Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000

Former area resident Freda (Daily) Mattison, 85, of Kearney died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney with the Rev. Barbara Hart officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Mattison was born March 16, 1914, to Chester and Hattie (Jones) Daily in Inavale. She graduated from Inavale High School in 1931, then attended Hastings College. On May 27, 1936, she married Leslie C. Mattison in Red Cloud. She taught in one-room country schools at Webster County district 51 and 70. She and her husband moved to Kearney in 1948. She taught kindergarten at Bryant and Kenwood schools. She and her husband moved to a farm west of Kearney in 1951, until moving back into Kearney. Her husband died in 1995. She moved to Good Samaritan Center in June 1997.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, the Time Extension Club and the Alfalfa Center Kensington.

Survivors are two daughters, Colene Beck of Kearney and Marjorie Olson of Minden; one sister, Rheva Holoubeck of Kearney; one brother, Dallas Daily of Kearney; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Faith United Methodist Church or St. John's Good Samaritan Center.

Grace A. Cushing

Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000

Former Hastings resident Grace A. (Lavely) Cushing, 95, of Alliance died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in Alliance.

Rosary is 10 a.m. Tuesday with services following at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Gyhra and Monsignor Ivan Vap officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings. Book registration is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mrs. Cushing was born Sept. 9, 1904, to W.W. and Mamie E. (Hanley) Lavely in Corning, Iowa. She graduated from high school and attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln for three years. In 1925, she married Harry H. Cushing. They lived in Hastings from 1925-56, then moved to Omaha. He preceded her in death March 5, 1979. In 1992, she moved to Alliance.

She is a former member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings.

Survivors are two sons, Richard H. of Surprise, Ariz., and Thomas H. of Sun City West, Ariz.; two daughters, Dolores J. McCameron of Collinsville, Ill., and Karen J. Roseberry of Alliance; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Memorials may be given to Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.

Jimmie L. Seaman
Monday, Jan. 31, 2000

Hebron resident Jimmie L. Seaman, 78, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hubbell with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbell Cemetery with military rites conducted by State Line American Legion Post No. 317 of Hubbell. Visitation is until 9:30 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Belleville, Kan.

Mr. Seaman was born June 9, 1921, to Percy and Mary (Drovetta) Seaman in Belleville. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Jan. 1, 1949, he married Velva E. Clement. He served as fire chief in Hubbell for several years. He owned and operated Jim's Service, from which he retired. He also was a retired farmer and truck driver.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, State Line American Legion Post No. 317 and the Lions Club, all in Hubbell.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Dennis Seaman and Randy Thurber, both of Lincoln, Jimmie A. Seaman of Hubbell and Larry E. Seaman of Hebron; four daughters, Annette Eaton of Washington, Kan., Juanita Addy of Billings, Mont., Vicki Gilkeson of Chester and Bonnie Welch of Hubbell; two brothers, Anthony Seaman of Belleville and Freddie Seaman of Bradenton, Fla.; four sisters, Lena Kelley of Wamego, Kan., Sarah Kenley of Salem, Ill., Lettie Fraser of Belleville and Ella Friesen of Westmoreland, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lloyd M. Campbell
Monday, Jan. 31, 2000

Hastings resident Lloyd Milton Campbell, 84, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will be at the Clay Center Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mills Schroder American Legion Post No. 87 of Clay Center.

Mr. Campbell was born June 6, 1915, to John Lewis and Alice Josephine (Stokes) Campbell in Clay Center. He graduated from Clay Center High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 550 Field Artillery Battalion. He returned to Clay Center and was a carpenter at the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings. He retired from civil service after 19 1/2 years. He then worked at Hastings Industries in the shipping department for 15 years until retiring. On July 25, 1952, he married Edith O. McMillan in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Hastings.

He was a member of the Clay Center American Legion Post No. 87.

Survivors are his wife; two stepsons, Kenneth L. Hyman of Beatrice and Lester D. Hyman of Omaha; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family.
