Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999

Red Cloud resident Eva (Watt) Kugler, 94, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Red Cloud Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Hansen officiating. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kugler was born June 12, 1905, to Benjamin F. and Elizabeth (Houchtin) Watt in Red Cloud. She grew up in Webster County and attended rural school. She worked as a health-care assistant in the Red Cloud and northern Kansas areas. She moved to Red Cloud after she retired.

She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne, and three sisters.

Eleanor Spitz

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999

Kenesaw resident Eleanor Spitz, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Amy J. Nissen

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Inland resident Amy J. Nissen, 25, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Miss Nissen was born Dec. 8, 1973, to Donald and Sandra (Swartzel) Nissen in Hastings. She attended District School 15 and graduated from Adams Central High School in 1992. She completed a course in 1993 at the Lincoln School of Commerce. She then attended Hastings College until a one-vehicle accident in 1994 restricted her to her parent's home. She was engaged to Aaron J. Nehls of Inland.

She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors are her parents of Inland; four brothers, Michael of Hastings, Steven J. and Steven P., both of Inland, and Aaron of Minot, N.D.; and two sisters, Shannon Blakley of Hastings and Christy Nissen of Bismark, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

John A. 'Swede' Bergman

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident John A. "Swede" Bergman, 81, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Mitchell County Community Memorial Hospital Long-term Care in Beloit, Kan.

Vigil service is 8 p.m. Wednesday and services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Mankato with the Bishop George Fitzsimons and the Rev. Allen Scheer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until 7 p.m. today at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Mr. Bergman was born May 30, 1918, to Henry and Elizabeth (Richards) Bergman in North Platte. He attended St. Theresa's Academy in Cawker City, Kan., Fort Hays University in Hays, Kan., and Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. He lived in Cawker City, Ionia, Kan., and Mankato. He was a retired farmer stockman.

He was a member of the Jewell County Rural Water District, B.P.O.E. No. 21071 and F.O.E. Aerie No. 3101 of Superior and the Jewell County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee. He served on the board of directors for the Osborne Midway Co-op and Marymount College. He also served on the St. Peter Church and St. Paul Church committees of Cawker City, and St. Theresa's Church committees. He was a fourth-degree member of the Robert Kennedy Knights of Columbus in Tipton, Kan., and a second- and third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Esbon, Kan.

Survivors are his wife; two stepdaughters, Beverly Conner of Rockville, Md., and Sherry Conner of Denver; two stepsons, Michael Conner of Mankato and William Conner of Loveland, Colo.; one sister, Agnes Gastley of Beloit; seven stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Theresa's Catholic Church or the family's choice.

Ernest W. Schoning

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Former Minden resident Ernest W. Schoning, 83, of Kearney, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kearney with the Rev. John Borgwardt officiating. Burial is 3 p.m. Friday at the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and prior to services Friday at the church.

Mr. Schoning was born Dec. 3, 1916, to Henry W. and Dorothy (Beimiller) Schoning in Buffalo. He grew up and attended school in the Buffalo area. He then farmed with his parents. On April 18, 1954, he married Esther Pockrandt in Kearney. They farmed near Buffalo and then moved to Lexington where he worked at the Alfalfa Mill. They moved to Minden where he worked at the farmer's elevator. In 1958 they moved to Grand Island. He was a custodian at the Catholic Hospital there. They moved to Kearney in 1969 where he worked as a custodian for Kearney State College until retiring.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Ila Le Ann Schoning of Kearney; and two sisters, Freda Benton of Cozad and Emma Warner of Lexington.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Beulah Mendenhall

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Former Superior resident Beulah (Olena) Mendenhall, 84, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior. Burial will be at the Burr Oak, Kan., Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mendenhall was born Oct. 1, 1915, to Louis and Sattie (Reed) Olena near Otego, Kan. She graduated from high school in Burr Oak in 1933 and earned her teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan. She taught school at Otego. On June 24, 1939, she married Floyd Mendenhall in Beloit, Kan. She taught school in Jewell County for four years. She and her husband lived on a farm near Esbon, Kan., then moved to Superior. She worked as a grocery clerk and also at Wages Variety Store in Superior for 20 years. She helped raise her brother's four children after his wife died. On March 19, 1991, her husband died. She moved to the Nelson Good Samaritan Center in 1992.

Survivor is one brother, Lyle of Geneva.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.

Edna C. Jacobsen

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999

McCool Junction area resident Edna C. Jacobsen, 93, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, in Fairmont.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at McCool Junction United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jaclyn Hoy officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near McCool Junction. Visitation begins Thursday morning at Metz Mortuary in York.

Survivors are four sons; one daughter, Patricia Kranau of Blue Hill; one sister; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy M. Washington

Monday, Nov. 15, 1999

Superior resident Dorothy Marie (Wall) Washington, 93, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Dale Bussinger officiating. Private burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior.

Mrs. Washington was born Oct. 28, 1906, to Lot and Mattie (Robertson) Wall in Watseka, Ill. She moved with her parents to the Ruskin and Oak area in 1908. She graduated in 1925 from Nelson High School. On June 14, 1926, she married Clyde Washington in Geneva. They ran the Washington Store in Oak until 1942 when they moved the business to Hardy. After selling the store, she and her husband worked at the Hardy Post Office. She retired as postmaster in 1976. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Hardy Union Church, Harmonettes Ladies Chorus, Superior Country Club and American Legion Auxiliary and was a 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also was active in the World War I Barracks.

Survivors are three daughters, Bonnie Gaebler of Omaha, Wilma Cappel of Mason City, Iowa, and Carol Lippincott of Englewood, Colo.; one brother, Leroy Wall of Davenport; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hardy Union Church or the donor's favorite charity.

Leone G. Roy

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999

Kenesaw resident Leone G. (Thibodeau) Roy, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Rosary is 10:15 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with family present from 7-8:30 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mrs. Roy was born Nov. 28, 1908, to George A. and Laura (L'Heureux) Thibodeau in Upland. She graduated from Campbell High School. In 1928 she moved to Hastings. On June 16, 1930, she married Victor A. Roy in Campbell. She worked for the telephone company for nine years. On July 29, 1946, her husband died.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and a past member of its Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.

Riley G. Hinrichs

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999

Riley Grace Hinrichs, infant daughter of Kipp and Tonya (Jarosik) Hinrichs of Glenvil, died at birth Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Private family services are 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Private family burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her parents; one sister, Rachel Hinrichs of Glenvil; her grandparents, Larry and Janis Hinrichs of Glenvil and Connie Bunker of Aurora; and great-grandparents, Yvonne and Rudy Hubl of Lawrence and Glen and Thelma Koester of Guide Rock.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Don Baker

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident Don Baker, 65, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home in Olathe, Kan.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Carroll Everist officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Salina, Kan., with masonic services by Masonic Lodge No. 87 A.F. & A.M. of Mankato. Military services will be by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard, VFW Post No. 7830 of Mankato and the American Legion Post of Jewell, Kan. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m.

Mr. Baker was born Sept. 28, 1934, to Arthur and Sylvia (Brinkman) Baker in Waterville, Minn. On Feb. 8, 1959, he married Lila Oline. He retired from the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of the American Legion in Jewell, VFW Post No. 7830 and Masonic Lodge No. 87 A.F. & A.M., both in Mankato, The Retired Enlisted Association of Salina and Pawnee Mental Health.

Survivors are his wife of Larned, Kan.; one son, Don of Olathe; his mother of Greeley, Colo.; four brothers, John Jack of Topeka, Kan., Jerry of Scottsdale, Ariz., Dwight of Briggsdale, Colo., and Ronald of Greeley; two sisters, Doris Biewers of Lankin, N.D., and Carol Wright of Loveland, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

James M. Lehne

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999

Hastings resident James M. Lehne, 79, of 848 Creighton Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hastings with the Rev. Barry Rempp officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 7-8 p.m., at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Lehne was born Nov. 28, 1920, to Fredrick and Cora (Harris) Lehne in Leavenworth, Kan. On May 13, 1939, he married Juneleen Hylton. From 1945-46 he served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for many years in store management for J.C. Penney Co. and later the J.M. McDonald Co. in Hastings. He also worked in advertising, sales and management for several companies including Dahl Broadcasting in North Platte and KHAS radio and KICS radio in Hastings. On Jan. 3, 1984, his wife died. On July 6, 1984, he married Donna Nelson Hansen.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ where he served on various committees. He was a member of the American Legion in North Platte and a member and volunteer at the Hastings Museum.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Sandi Stewart and Melisa Johnston, both of Miles City, Mont., and Michelle Windhorst of Unadilla; one stepdaughter, Karen Roback of Inland; one son, Gary Lehne of Missoula, Mont.; one stepson, Jay Hansen of Redondo Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Frankie Kaaz or Reno, Nev., and Becky Belt of Plattewoods, Mo.; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the First Congregational United Church of Christ Building Addition Fund, 2810 W. Seventh St., Hastings, NE 68901.

Lester D. Shriever

Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999

Superior resident Lester Dean Shriever, 63, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior with the Rev. Paul Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. There is no visitation. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schriever was born Feb. 5, 1936, to Harry and Ella (Jeppesen) Schriever in Superior. He attended grade school at Abdal and graduated from Superior High School. He worked with Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., and then moved to California to work for AT&T/Pacific Bell. He married Elizabeth Anne Powell. From 1958-1962 he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a BMW motorcycle enthusiast and earned many awards, including medial lions for 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 mile marks.

Survivors are two sons, John of San Carlos, Calif., and Drew of Lake Forrest, Calif.; one daughter, Domenica Michalson of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
