Grace A. Yates

Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999

Doniphan resident Grace Ann (Hayek) Yates, 90, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Lakeview Health and Rehab Center in Grand Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Doniphan United Methodist Church with the Revs. Gil Karges and Kenneth McClain officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan. There is no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Yates was born Oct. 13, 1909, to Anton and Frances (Bozek) Hayek in Linwood. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1931. On June 8, 1933, she married Ivan Yates in David City. They lived in Hastings and Ragan before moving to Doniphan in 1941. She taught home economics and science at Doniphan Schools for many years. She and her husband also ran the Doniphan Locker and Grocery.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She and her husband received the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award in 1992.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Bob of Gering; one sister, Dorothy Collins of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Bill, and six sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Charles H. Bergman

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999

Rural Lebanon, Kan., resident Charles Henry Bergman, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Kansas.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Thursday at Simmons Mortuary in Smith Center, Kan. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon, Kan., with the Rev. Allen Scheer officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Esbon. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the mortuary.

Mr. Bergman was born July 12, 1915, to Henry and Elizabeth Louise (Richard) Bergman in North Platte. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. His first wife, MaryAlice, preceded him in death Dec. 28, 1987. On July 20, 1990, he married Ann Weber.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon and Knights of Columbus. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Beloit Post No. 6242.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Ruth Deines of Woodbine, Kan., Betty Funster of Lenexa, Kan., and Bobbi Hughes of Leawood, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Janice Troxel of Lincoln and Cathy Eitzmann of Boston Lake, N.Y.; two sons, John Bergman of Lebanon and Eugene Bergman of Campbell; two stepsons, Stan Troxel of Papillion and Elwyn Troxel of Lakewood, Colo.; one sister, Agnes Gastley of Beloit, Kan.; 25 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

John E. Meyer

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999

Davenport resident John E. Meyer, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Davenport with the Rev. Lila Bottolfsen officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport and two hours prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Meyer was born Jan. 18, 1921, to John Sr. and Nancy Francis (Davis) Meyer in Oak. He attended grade school in Oak and graduated from Nelson High School. On Jan. 15, 1941, he married Vecilia "Sallie" Whartman in Belleville, Kan. He farmed in the Edgar and Davenport areas. In 1974 he opened his own business, Johnies Carpentry.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lily Masonic Lodge No. 154 AF & AM and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 268 in Davenport.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, John of Geneva and Gary of Davenport; one brother, Victor of Edgar; three sisters, Jean Urbauer of Davenport, Helen Grupe of Deshler and Naomi Hansen of North Platte; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Carl E. Anderson

Monday, Dec. 6, 1999

Hebron resident Carl E. Anderson, 77, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home chapel in Hebron with the Rev. Jonathan Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 10, 1922, to John and Bertha (Ericson) Anderson in Omaha. He attended public school until fifth grade.

Survivors are one brother, Ralph of Ralston.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home.

Amy J. Nissen

Hastings area resident, Amy J. Nissen, 25, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Leland R. 'Jim' Lipp

Friday, Dec. 3, 1999

Franklin resident Leland R. "Jim" Lipp, 70, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Services are pending with Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin.

William D. 'Bill' Veik

Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999

Clay Center resident William Dean "Bill" Veik, 64, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at his home.

Rosary is 8 p.m. Sunday at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center and services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harvard with the Rev. Bernard Lorenz officiating. Burial will be in the Clay Center Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 87.

Mr. Veik was born April 21, 1935, to William Peter and Evelyn Anne (Wemhoff) Veik in Hanover, Kan. He attended School District No. 73 and St. John Catholic School in Petersburg. On July 4, 1962, he married Artis Johnson in Aurora, Colo. They lived in Aurora, Colo., and then moved to Clay Center. He and his wife later divorced. He worked construction most of his life. He had lived at Goldenrod Housing in Clay Center for the past two years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Clay Center American Legion Post No. 87.

Survivors are three daughters, Roberta "Bobbie" Ware of North Glen, Colo., Linda Iverson of Hudson, Colo., and Judy Hefner of Brighton, Colo.; one son, Kevin of Rolla, Mo.; six brothers, Alvin and Keith, both of Clay Center, Linus and Stephen, both of Denver, Ronnie of Platteville, Colo., and Terry of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Donna Paproski and Janet Temme, both of Deer Trail, Colo., and Marie Smith of Petersburg; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

George R. Forbes

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999

Hastings resident George R. Forbes, 60, of 820 S. Pine Ave. No. 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at his home.

Private family services will be at a later date. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Forbes was born May 13, 1939, to Jack and Mildred (Reed) Forbes in Rocky Ford, Colo. He moved to Hastings 20 years ago where he worked for Hastings Public Schools for 18 years before retiring. On April 15, 1996, he and his wife Sandra M. were married.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Deb Price of Hastings and Jackie Leichleiter of Harvard; three stepdaughters, Misty Tilley and Heather M. Fielder, both of Hastings and Dusty Ulner of McCook; one son, Darren Forbes of Harvard; one stepson, Larry Hammond of Hastings; his mother of Colorado; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; one brother; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Doris A. Drake

Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999

Superior resident Doris A. (Seeman) Drake, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Blue Hill.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior with the Rev. Paul Albrecht officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Drake was born Aug. 4, 1930, to Christopher W. and Alma A. (Knehans) Seeman near Blue Hill in Webster County. She attended Prairie Gem School in rural Webster County and Trinity Lutheran School in Blue Hill. She graduated in 1947 from Blue Hill High School. She worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings for two years and then worked for the Webster County superintendent for three years. On Sept. 14, 1960, she married Roy Edward Drake Jr. in Hastings. She lived in New Mexico and Tucson, Ariz., before moving to Superior in 1974. There she worked for Superior Public Schools. On May 3, 1987, her husband died.

She was a member of the Centennial Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Survivors are one son, Raymond of Hume, Mo.; three brothers, W. Delbert of Steinauer, Chris Jr. of Dora, N.M., and Carroll of Roseland; one sister, Bertha Lamborn of Blue Hill; and two grandchildren.

Lucille Hawkinson

Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999

Former Hastings resident Lucille (Quirk) Hawkinson, 86, of San Diego, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in San Diego.

Services were Dec. 15 at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego with the Rev. Dr. Donald Buteyn officiating. Services also were Dec. 19 at the Luze Funeral Home chapel in Highmore, S.D., with the Rev. Roger Day officiating. Burial was in the Highmore Cemetery.

Mrs. Hawkinson was born Jan. 11, 1913, to Elmer and Minnie (Gerhart) Quirk in St. Paul, Minn. She grew up in Highmore, S.D. In 1933 she graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She taught at Mapleton High School in Iowa for two years. On June 7, 1935, she married David F. Hawkinson. During World War II, she lived in Highmore and taught English at the high school. She and her husband moved to Hastings in 1954. They moved to Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1965 and then to Rancho Bernardo in San Diego in 1987.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Chapter G, P.E.O. and the Fortnightly Study Club.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Marilyn Obergon of San Diego; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, David Jr.; one sister; and one brother.

Sara J. Kurdziel-Stalzer

Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999

Former Hastings resident Sara Jane (Peil) Kurdziel-Stalzer, 54, of Plainfield, Ill., died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at her home.

Services were Dec. 22 at Overman-Jones Funeral Home in Plainfield. A private family burial followed.

Mrs. Kurdziel-Stalzer was born Jan. 26, 1945, to Jacob and Edith (Ackerman) Peil in Hastings. She grew up in Blue Hill and graduated in 1963 from Blue Hill High school. She attended business school in Omaha. She married Ken Stalzer in 1960. In 1976 she moved to Plainfield where she was president and co-owner of Peyla Electric for 27 years.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Michele Kurdziel of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two stepsons, Kenneth Jr. of Elwood, Ill., and Kurt of Plainfield; three stepdaughters, Karre Schultz of Plainfield, Kitte Ward of Elwood and Kriste Teats of Phoenix; four brothers, Bruce of Manhattan, Kan., Glen of Colorado Springs, Colo., Wayne of Roeland Park, Kan., Ken of Ayr and Fred of Blue Hill; one sister, Mary Stanfill of El Cajon, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Memorials may by given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Tammy Dunbar

Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999

Grand Island resident Tammy (McConnell) Dunbar, 34, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island after a long bout with cancer.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Sunday and services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Frank Hoelck officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation with family receiving friends is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, former Hastings resident Dale Dunbar of Grand Island.

Normajean Fahrenholz

Monday, Dec. 27, 1999

Hebron resident Normajean (Dedric) Fahrenholz, 78, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blue Valley Lutheran Home Chapel in Hebron with the Rev. Stuart Wiley officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Alma Cemetery. Visitation is until 7 p.m. today at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mrs. Fahrenholz was born Oct. 17, 1921, to Alba and Lura (Parish) Dedric in Alma. She graduated from Alma High School. She worked for several years as a waitress in Alma. She married Virgil Fahrenholz. He preceded her in death.

She was a lifetime member of the Glenvil American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are four sons, Ronald Sealey of Hastings, Dennis Sealey of Juniata, Greg Sealey of Friend and Kevin Sealey of Phoenix; three daughters, Roberta Kent of Gilead, Judy Wiley of York and Cindy Kucera of Deweese; one sister, Phyllis Coe of Hastings; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Streff; and one sister.

A memorial has been established.
