Merle E. Hafer

Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999

Hastings resident Merle E. Hafer, 84, of 1418 W. Third St., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Hafer was born March 14, 1915, to David and Willemina (Nowack) Hafer in Phillips. He graduated from Phillips High School. From 1939-42 he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On March 5, 1943, he married Annabelle Offner. He worked as a farmer and then for Western Land Roller in Hastings for 30 years before retiring.

He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and the VFW. He also was a coach for Little League and Pony League Baseball.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Marylin Seeman of Roseland; two sons, Joseph of Blue Hill and Charles of Hastings; one sister, Marlene Guthrie of St. Joseph, Mo.; one brother, Homer "Pete" of Waubleau, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Milen G. 'Mike' Trupp

Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999

Former Hastings resident Milen G. "Mike" Trupp, 83, of Pickstown, S.D., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Wagner, S.D.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner. The remains were cremated.

Mr. Trupp was born Nov. 7, 1916, to John and Mollie (Lissman) Trupp in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1935. He joined the U.S. National Guard and then the U.S. Army where he served as a staff sergeant from 1942-46. On April 14, 1946, he married Wilma "Billie" Norvell in Omaha. He was the sales and branch manager of Sidles Co. in Nebraska for several years. From 1973-83 he owned Mr. Automotive in O'Neill. He retired in 1985 and moved near Pickstown.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in O'Neill where he served as an elder. He was a founding member of the Fort Randall Boat Club in South Dakota.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Tonya "Toni" Flynn of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one son, Kevin of Burlington, Wis.; two brothers, Wilson of Green Valley, Ariz., and Alfred of Torrance, Calif.; one sister, Bonnie Scheele of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Dorinda J. Olson

Monday, Dec. 27, 1999

Axtell resident Dorinda J. (Danielson) Olson, 85, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell with the Rev. David Evenson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.

Mrs. Olson attended beauty school in Hastings.

Samuel W. Escritt

Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999

Former Tribland resident Samuel W. Escritt, 69, of Central City, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City.

Services were to be today at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Quandt officiating. Burial was to be at the Oakdale Cemetery.

Mr. Escritt was born Jan. 15, 1930, to William and Edith (Harbaugh) Escritt in Antelope County. He was raised on the family farm near Neligh. He attended a rural Neligh elementary school and high school at Neligh. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1947. He worked in Norfolk and attended Nebraska Christian College. He then did supply preaching in Superior. He moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, and attended college there. He returned to Superior, where he worked for the Hill Oil Co. He also preached at a rural church in Kansas. He moved to Kearney, where he did construction and worked for Mueller Motor. He also preached at the Church of Christ in Broken Bow. On May 19, 1956, he married JoAnne Harkness in Holdrege. They lived in Kearney, Hays Center, Kan., and several other places where he worked in agriculture fields. They settled in Minden in 1968. He was a water patrolman for Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation for 24 years and retired in 1992. He and his wife moved to Superior in 1996. They moved to Central City earlier this year.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Palmer and was a Bible School teacher, song leader and supply minister.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Kathy Furby of Amherst, Lou Ann Bauer of Fremont and Cindy Berck of Hastings; two sons, Philip of Minden and Warren of Bethany, Okla.; four brothers, David of Oakdale, Dan of Proctor, Mont., Bill of Rantoul, Ill., and Art of Walhalla, S.C.; two sisters, Ann Stanley of Oregon and Zella Schwarting of Oakdale; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Pible Bible Camp.

Mary L. Owen

Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999

Former rural Hardy resident Mary Louise Owen, 61, of Webber, Kan., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in the Rosemound Cemetery south of Hardy. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Miss Owen was born July 18, 1938, to Carl Zelephade and Wilma Faye (Powell) Owen on a farm in Republic County, Kan., south of Hardy. She attended the Bretheran Junior College in McPherson, Kan., and Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina, Kan. She earned a degree in home economics. She then returned to farm with her parents.

Surviving is her mother of Webber.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be given in care of the family, Route 1, P.O. Box 38, Webber, KS 66970.

Juanita E. Spotts

Monday, Dec. 27, 1999

Minden resident Juanita E. (Davis) Spotts, 86, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Bethany Home in Minden.

Memorial services will be at a later date in Jefferson, Iowa. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Spotts was born Oct. 27, 1913, to James and Maude (Anderson) Davis in Jefferson. She graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1937 she married Charles E. Spotts in Nashau, Iowa. She worked for the Iowa State University and the Department of Social Services in Ames, Iowa. In 1977 she and her husband bought the Rains Motel in Branson, Mo. In 1978 her husband died. She returned to Ames in 1979 and lived there until 1998. She then moved to Minden.

Survivors are one son, Charles W. of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Doris Nelson of Aurelia, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Carl; two brothers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Dallas C. Foster

Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999

Former Burr Oak, Kan., resident Dallas Clark Foster, 90, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Nazarene in Burr Oak with the Revs. Harold Lamb and Danny Strange officiating. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery. Melby Mortuary of Mankato, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Foster was born April 10, 1909, to Joel Clarkson and Phoebe Dell (Lamb) Foster in Burr Oak. He attended Moore Country School and graduated from Burr Oak High School. On April 26, 1937, he married Ellen May Blakeway in Douglas, Wyo. He farmed in Kansas during the 1940s and owned a grocery store in Steele City. He also owned several service stations and a sporting goods and an Indian arts and crafts shop in Rawlins, Wyo. He worked on DEW Line at Point Barrow in Alaska. After retiring to Burr Oak, he made clocks and belt buckles. He operated his own tool business until a year ago.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mardell Fayer of Salt Lake City and Charla Naish of Frenchtown, Mont.; one son, Dallas Foster of Fallon, Nev.; one sister, Lois Hoskins of Iowa; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the donor's favorite charity.

Harold M. Kanter

Monday, Dec. 27, 1999

Palmer resident Harold M. Kanter, 82, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Integrated Health Systems in Palmer.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer with the Rev. Robert Schilling officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer.

Survivors are one son; three stepsons; three daughters, including Connie Saathoff of Hastings and Beverly Nixon of Kenesaw; one stepdaughter; one brother; one sister; eight grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Dorinda J. Olson

Monday, Dec. 27, 1999

Services for former Minden area resident Dorinda J. Olson, 85, of Axtell who died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney are 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell with the Rev. David Evenson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.

Gladys E. Degenhardt

Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999

Hebron resident Gladys E. (Bartling) Degenhardt, 76, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Hebron with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial will be in the Hebron City Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and two hours prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Degenhardt was born Dec. 1, 1923, to Carl and Clarissia (Deaver) Bartling in rural Gilead. On June 23, 1946, she married Max D. Degenhardt. She was a former bookkeeper for the Hebron Livestock Commission.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Church Board and was a Sunday School superintendent. She also was a member of the American Cancer Society, Thayer County Hospital Guild, Avalon Club, Legion Auxiliary, Election Board and Red Cross. She delivered Meals on Wheels.

Survivors are her husband; four sons, Dennis, Kenneth, Larry and Max, all of Hebron; three daughters, Cynthia Mueller of rural Davenport, Shari Fischer of Hebron and Carla Mieth of Lincoln; seven sisters, Carlean Kassebaum of Hebron, Delma Houchin of Bruning, Elaine Mooberry of Lexington, Nola Bates and Nelva Grone, both of Davenport, Wally Bates of Hastings and Sheila Stables of Carleton; one brothers, Stanley of Deshler; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Golda M. Simpson

Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999

Red Cloud resident Golda M. (Rouse) Simpson, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Visitation with family receiving friends will be 7 p.m. today at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud.

Mrs. Simpson was born March 28, 1910, to Loy and Isel Elizabeth (Yohe) Rouse at Nelson. She graduated from Eckley School in Webster County. On Dec. 12, 1929, she married John Yung in Nelson. They farmed near Guide Rock. They later divorced. On May 10, 1953, she married Harold "Bub" Simpson in Guide Rock. They lived at Guide Rock where they operated the Coffee Shop Cafe. She also was employed as a cook with the Guide Rock Public Schools for 25 years. She moved to Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud in December 1992. Her husband died Jan. 4, 1997.

She was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church and the Guide Rock Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors are two daughters, Carolyn Meistrell of Goose Creek, S.C., and Joy Barta of Independence, Kan.; two sons, John Eldon Yung of Warrensburg, Mo., and Lowell Yung of Axtell; one sister, Sylvia Engel of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Max Rouse of Aurora; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Wendell and Billy; one brother; and one grandchild.

Hazel L. 'Tiny' Johnson

Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999

Hebron resident Hazel L. "Tiny" (Wall) Johnson, 77, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron with the Rev. Bruce Berggren officiating. Burial will be in the Hebron City Cemetery. Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 20, 1922, to Oral C. and Hazel (Stanwood) Wall at Davenport. She graduated from Davenport High School. On Aug. 29, 1943, she married James V. Johnson in New Boston, Texas. She was a writer for the Hebron Journal Register and Fairbury Journal newspapers. She also was a former Thayer County deputy sheriff. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star in Hebron, Geneva and Beatrice art guilds, Thayer County Quilters Guild, Belvidere Women's Club, Thayer County Historical Society and the Nebraska Artists Association. She was a former member of the Hebron Chamber of Commerce and a director of Nebraska Masonic Children's Home in Fremont.

Survivors are four sons, Alan of Concordia, Kan., Lane of York, Lance of Bruning and Don of Kearney; one brother, Glenn of Camano Island, Wash.; one sister, Pat Bell of Kansas City, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Masonic Children's Home or Grace Lutheran Church.

Ethel G. Nelson

Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Ethel G. (Wilson) Nelson, 97, of rural Alda died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Alda United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rosalie Andersen officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation with family receiving friends is 5-8 p.m. today at the church. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson was born July 23, 1902, to Fred A. and Edna (Whiting) Wilson near Nora. She attended Beach School south of Nora and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture in Lincoln in 1923. She then taught school in rural Nuckolls County. On May 29, 1925, she married Arthur Nelson at Nelson. They farmed near Hardy. They moved to a farm south of the Alda Cemetery in 1937 and then in 1941 to a farm west of Alda. They moved to their present farm in 1944. Her husband died in March 1972.

She was a member of the Alda United Methodist Church, Farmers Union, Valley View Extension Club and Monday Quilters.

Survivors are one son, Gerald of Cody, Wyo.; two daughters, Elnora Weinrich of Alda and Ardis Wiese of Doniphan; 12 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.
