Harry T. Klein

Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999

Kenesaw resident Harry T. Klein, 98, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings and services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseland with the Revs. Thomas Au and John Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in the Roseland Cemetery. Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home of Kenesaw is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Klein was born Nov. 14, 1901, to John and Mary DeWitt in Roseland. He was a member of the first graduating class in Roseland. He was a teacher at a country school for two years. On Oct. 25, 1922, he married Helena Miller. He then farmed in the Roseland area. In 1954 he moved into Roseland. He retired from farming in 1962. On Oct. 10, 1991, his wife died. He moved to Kenesaw Haven Home in 1992.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Senior Citizens, Knights of Columbus No. 1055, Lions Club an Crosier Lay Apostolate.

Survivors are three daughters, Aileen Bonifas of Roseland, Theresa Mangers of Elburn, Ill., and Lillian Consbruck of Giltner; one brother, Carl of Hastings; 35 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Everett and Billie; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to Crosier Lay Apostles or the church.

Arnold Alberts

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999

Former Hastings resident Arnold Albert, 93, of Richland, Wash., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, in Richland.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home in Lennox, S.D. Burial will be in the Lennox Cemetery. Visitation with the family present begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Alberts was born May 28, 1906, to Mr. and Mrs. Bretcher "Bernie" Alberts in Davis, S.D. He graduated from Lennox High School. In 1928 he earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry and in 1930 his master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. On Sept. 14, 1931, he married Frances Jacobs in Lennox. He earned his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1934. He then taught chemistry in Pennsylvania and Indiana. In 1956 he moved to Hastings where he was head of the Hastings College Department of Chemistry for 20 years. He taught for a year at Sterling College in Sterling, Kan. On July 21, 1989, his wife died. He moved to Richland in 1990.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, the American Chemical Society, the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon.

Survivors are one son, Breck of Upland, Calif.; one daughter, Ann Allen of Richland; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Children's Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, S.D., or Hastings College.

Irene Koch

Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999

Hastings resident Irene Koch, 77, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Margaret E. Williams

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999

Former Hastings resident Margaret E. (Walling) Williams, 88, of Lexington, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Norfolk with the Rev. George Tarsis officiating. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home chapel in Lexington.

Mrs. Williams was born Nov. 19, 1911, to W.I. and Nella (Oliver) Walling in Norfolk. In November 1932 she married Arthur P. Williams. He preceded her in death in 1980.

She was a member of St. Peter's in the Valley Episcopal Church in Lexington and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hastings. She also was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are one son, David A. of Lexington and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Elizabeth Williams College of Dentistry Fund.

Carol Paczkowski

Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999

Hastings resident Carol Paczkowski, 77, of 135 E. Ninth St., died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Claus H. Meyer

Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999

Hastings resident Clause H. Meyer, 88, of 2406 Bateman St., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Loren Hackbart

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999

Hebron resident Loren Hackbart, 50, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Hebron with the Rev. John R. Walton officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Purdum Cemetery in Purdum. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Hackbart was born Oct. 28, 1949, to Richard and Caroline Hackbart in Halsey. He attended Halsey Dunning High School and then MDTA School in Omaha where he studied auto mechanics. He worked at H&H Chevrolet in Omaha and two gas stations while attending Milford Vocational Technical School. He graduated from there with a degree in diesel mechanics. On June 5, 1971, he married Elaine Heapy in Litchfield. He worked at Wahoo Implement in Wahoo and then Schleif Implement in Hebron for 17 years. He went into business for himself at Hebron Ag Repair.

He taught a 4-H tractor course for several years.

Survivors are his wife: one daughter, Lorelle Hackbart of Manhattan, Kan.; one son, Lewis Hackbart of Hebron; his mother and stepfather, Caroline and Chester Harden, both of Miller; four sisters, Ida Rose Serr of Kearney, Ellen Lee Boswell of Wheatridge, Colo., Rita Hurt of Fremont and Linda Rickert of Wood River; and two brothers, Roy Hackbart of Hastings and Harvey Harden of Miller.

He was preceded in death by his father; one brother; a grandmother; and a grandfather.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Erma M. Ocker

Friday, Dec. 10, 1999

Hastings resident Erma M. (Goldenstein) Ocker, 72, of 1232 N. Pine Ave., died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at her home.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be at the Glenvil Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mrs. Ocker was born Nov. 9, 1927, to Louis and Hilda (Frei) Goldenstein in Glenvil. She graduated in 1944 from Glenvil High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On Feb. 26, 1947, she married Robert F. Ocker in Marysville, Kan. He died in 1992.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, D.O.E.S. and the Elks Country Club. She was a volunteer for the Bloodmobile and the Pink Ladies at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Survivors are two sons, Louis and Dale, both of Lakewood, Colo.; one daughter, Karen Vogel of Lincoln; her mother of Hastings; one sister, Betty Krueger of Red Cloud; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Elks Country Club.

Martha Bunger

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999

Minden resident Martha (Johnson) Bunger, 94, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Hildreth. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Jelden Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mrs. Bunger was born Feb. 4, 1905, to John F. and Elisa (Bohemann) Johnson near Campbell. She moved with her family to a farm near Macon in 1909. She attended School District No. 25 near Macon until eighth grade. On June 1, 1925, she married Ocke O. Bunger at her parents' home near Macon. They farmed southeast of Hildreth until her husband retired in 1960. They then moved to a farm near Macon. In 1967 her husband died. She later moved into Hildreth. In 1994 she moved to Bethany Home in Minden.

Survivors are one son, Orval of Macon; three daughters, Luella Frerichs of Axtell, Lorrena Kersenbrock of Hildreth and Carol Mae Gramke of Upland; one sister, Helena Frecks of Minden; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister; five brothers; and one great-grandchild.

Ray J. Phelps

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999

Hastings resident Ray J. Phelps, 77, of No. 16 Village Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Matthew R. Nieman officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mr. Phelps was born Sept. 27, 1922, to Raymond and Verna (O'Donnell) Phelps near Trumbull. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1940. He attended Hastings College for one year before serving in German with the U.S. Army. He returned to Trumbull in 1946 to work for the family harvest company. On May 10, 1946, he married Vivian Boggs. He began farming with his brother in 1954 until this year. In October 1994 his wife died. On Oct. 17, 1997, he married Marjorie Reamer. They spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz.

He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Pamela Reichstein and Vicki Rouse, both of Trumbull and Valerie Brt of Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Connie Thompson of Rugby, N.D., and Bonnie Reamer of Madison, Wis.; two stepsons, Calvin Reamer of Oakes, N.D., and Howard Reamer of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother; one sister; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Ray and Vivian R. Phelps Memorial Fund.

Dae Dedrick

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999

Hastings resident Dae (Wilson) Dedrick, 86, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dedrick was born Nov. 13, 1913, to Oscar and Arah (Cutler) Wilson in Edgar. She moved with her family to Merna where she attended school. In 1930 she married Chester Dedrick in Red Cloud. They moved to various Nebraska communities before moving to Harvard in the 1960s. In 1975 they moved to Hastings. Her husband died in 1981.

Survivors are three sons, Harvey and Larry, both of Hastings, and Jim of Kearney; two daughters, Jody Fielder and Mary Habel, both of Hastings; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sons and a brother.

Memorials may be given to the Adams County Cancer Society.

Helen S. Philos

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999

Former Superior resident Helen S. (Staley) Philos, 85, of South Yarmouth, Mass., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in West Barnstable, Mass.

Memorial services will be at a later date. Dyer-Lake Funeral Home of Attleboro Falls, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Philos was born June 7, 1914, to Alvah H. and Helen T. (Browne) Staley in Superior. She graduated from Hastings College and studied at the International House in Geneva, Switzerland. She earned a graduate degree in economics from the University of Chicago. She was an international law librarian for the American Society of International Law in Washington for more than 25 years. She retired in 1985. She had been living in Massachusetts for the last 10 years.

She was a member of the Barnstable Unitarian Church.

Survivors are three daughters, Diane Philos-Jensen of West Barnstable; Daphne Philos of Alexandria, Va., and Valerie Morris of Accokeek, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Blake Svoboda

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999

Sutton resident Blake Phillip Edward Schinkel Svoboda, 15, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the church with family receiving friends from 2-4 p.m. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Blake was born Sept. 1, 1984, to Michael A. and Robin R. (Schinkel) Svoboda in Omaha. He was a sophomore at Sutton Public Schools, where he was a wrestler.

Survivors are his parents of Sutton and one sister, Savannah Svoboda of Sutton.

He was preceded in death by one grandmother.

Memorials may be given to a crisis center or to the family.
