Bertha E. East

Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999

Hastings resident Bertha E. (Knosp) East, 94, of 505 Lane E, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. East was born Dec. 30, 1904, to Gustave R.A. and Bertha (Blum) Knosp in Hastings. On April 30, 1931, she married Oscar M. East in Hastings. They moved to Sidney in 1949. In 1966 her husband died. She returned to Hastings in 1967. She worked as a bookkeeper and as an Avon representative.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors are one son, Ronald L. of Germantown, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church or the National Alzheimer's Research Foundation.

Matthew S. Hinrichs

Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Matthew S. Hinrichs, 20 of Smyrna, Ga., died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in a camping accident near Tallulah Falls, Ga.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Edward F. Sinden

Friday, Aug. 27, 1999

Smith Center, Kan., resident Edward F. Sinden, 82, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Smith County Hospital in Kansas.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Smith Center with the Rev. Charles Cryderman officiating. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Simmons Mortuary in Smith Center.

Mr. Sinden was born Aug. 10, 1917, to Fred and Florence Sinden in Harlan, Kan. He graduated in 1936 from Harlan High School. He worked at the Kalbflesch Elevator in Harlan. On Dec. 21, 1941, he married Doris Jones in Harlan. They then moved to Smith Center. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-46 as an airplane mechanic. Upon his return home, he worked at various jobs in Smith Center before working for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1977 he retired after 33 years.

He was a member of the Smith Center United Methodist Church, the Lions Club, the Smith Center Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Post No. 220. He was also a member of the "As The Bladder Fills" coffee group.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Susan Buckley of Smith Center; one sister, Florence Edwards of Athens, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Dale E. Traudt

Friday, July 30, 1999

Former Sutton resident Dale E. Traudt, 55, of Aurora, died Friday, July 30, 1999, near Giltner.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Aurora Airport Hangar with the Rev. Al Duminy officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation is until 7:30 p.m. today at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. A family prayer service will follow.

Mr. Traudt was born May 14, 1944, to Paul and Catherine "Katy" (Helzer) Traudt in Eldorado. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1962 and attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla. He earned his airframe and power plant airplane mechanic license from the Western Nebraska Vocational Tech in Sidney. In 1964 he enlisted in the Nebraska Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve for six years. On Aug. 31, 1966, he married Joleen Salmen at Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton. He received his pilot's license in 1968 and later received his commercial and instrument licenses and multi-engine rating. He was a truck driver and worked for Werner Construction and later for Aviation Services in Grand Island as an aircraft mechanic. In 1973 he and his father and brother-in-law formed Sutton Aerial Services, which later was changed to Traudt Aerial Services. He and his wife lived in Lincoln, Chappell, Kearney and Grand Island before moving to Aurora in 1974. There, he opened an airplane mechanic shop and served as airport manager until his death.

He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion, the Nebraska Fertilizer and Ag-Chemical Institute and Aurora Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the National Aviation Agricultural Association. He served on various committees and boards on the national level. He traveled to Washington, D.C., and served as vice president, treasurer and board member of the Nebraska Aviation Trade Association. He also was an active supporter of the Professional Aerial Application and Support System. At the time of his death, he was serving as director of the National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation. He was awarded Airman of the Year in 1995 and received the President's Award in 1996. He was actively involved in legislative affairs.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Jill Feekin of Papillion and Darcie Wendt of Omaha; one son, Matthew of Lincoln; his mother of Sutton; five sisters, Mary Robbins of Kearney, Paula Teetor of Omaha and Cathy Traudt, Carol Griess and Patty Leininger, all of Sutton; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be given to the Messiah Lutheran Church or the Professional Aerial Application Support System.

Lewanna Corwin

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Former Minden resident Lewanna (Richmond) Corwin, 82, of Cathedral City, Calif., died Thursday, July 15, 1999.

Services were Sunday at the Community Church in Cathedral City. Her body was donated to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Mrs. Corwin was born June 22, 1917, to Louis and Anna (Work) Richmond in Minden. On May 25, 1946, she married Robert Corwin in Concordia, Kan. She worked as a nurse at Desert Hospital in Cathedral City for 10 years and at a hospital in Seattle. She also served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a nurse.

She was a member of the Community Church and the American Legion Post No. 301 in Rancho Mirage.

Survivors are one daughter, Naomi of Duluth, Minn.; one sister, Naomi Domingo of San Diego; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Community Church of Cathedral City Memorial Fund, 38088 Chuperosa Lane, Cathedral City, CA 92234.

Margaret C. McMahon

Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999

Blue Hill resident Margaret C. (Meyer) McMahon, 90, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at the Blue Hill Care Center.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jim Witt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery near Blue Hill. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McMahon was born April 6, 1909, to Julius and Minnie (Muhleisen) Meyer in Blue Hill. On Sept. 29, 1940, she married Gilbert A. McMahon in Blue Hill. She worked for Glenwood Telephone Co., Bob Meyer Insurance and Tom Meyer Insurance, all in Blue Hill. Her husband died Jan. 23, 1964.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Women's Club and Project Club. She also worked as a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Bank.

Survivors are two daughters, Mary Scheffel of San Diego; one sister, Dorothy Hale of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Lloyd of Iowa City, Iowa; and four grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, Blue Hill Library Fund or the Blue Hill Care Center.

Melvin E. DeJonge

Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999

Juniata resident Melvin E. DeJonge, 79, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Thayer County Health Services Hospital in Hebron.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. John Lee Ross officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. DeJonge was born Jan. 11, 1920, to Ommo and Bena (Raveling) DeJonge in Bloomington. He grew up in the Hildreth area and graduated from Hildreth High School in 1938. From 1941-45 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. On Sept. 18, 1943, he married Jeanette Davis in Ventura, Calif. He later returned to the Hildreth area to farm. He retired and moved to Juniata in 1982. For a short time he was a resident of the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home in Hebron.

He was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hildreth. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Ann Busboom of Omaha; one son, Jim of Exeter; two sisters, Ellen Swanson of Lincoln and Bernetta Pettey of Overland Park, Kan.; one brother, Lee of Lincoln; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home.

Evelyn Norgaard

Friday, Aug. 27, 1999

Superior resident Evelyn (Menagh) Norgaard, 80, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, in Superior.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mrs. Norgaard was born Oct. 5, 1918, to John and Pearl Evelyn (Nicholson) Menagh in Denison, Iowa. She graduated from Central High School in Omaha. She attended Doane College in Crete and The School of Theatre in Pasadena, Calif. She received degrees in English and education from Lavern College in Los Angeles. On Aug. 22, 1944, she married Ormond L. Norgaard in Chicago. She taught at Superior school district from 1967-82 when she retired. On Oct. 20, 1995, her husband died.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Olive Chapter No. 63, where she served as matron, and Retired Teachers.

Survivors are two daughters, Cheryl Rose of Rawlins, Wyo. and Terryl Norgaard of Superior; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family, United Methodist Church or American Heart Association.

Dale E. Dragoo

Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999

Former Fairfield resident Dale E. Dragoo, 91, of Phoenix, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in Phoenix.

Services will be private for the family. The National Cremation Society of Phoenix is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dragoo was born Aug. 14, 1908, to John Frasier and Ada (Richie) Dragoo in Fairfield. He was the owner of Hub Cheveron in Phoenix.

He was a Shriner at New Mexico Masonic Lodge.

Survivors are one daughter, Judith Senior of Las Vegas; one son, Thomas of New Mexico; one sister, Fern English of New Mexico; three brothers, Lloyd and Alvin, both of New Mexico and Richard of California; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor's favorite charity.

Irmgard T. K. 'Irma' Hornbacher

Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999

Sutton resident Irmgard Tusnelda Kundegunda "Irma" (Goemmel) Hornbacher, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at the Sutton Community Home.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hornbacher was born April 21, 1914, to the Rev. John and Herrlick Marie (Petersen) Goemmel in Sutton. She attended Sutton Public Schools and graduated in 1932. On Nov. 12, 1933, she married Ephraim Reinhold "Hummy" Hornbacher at the Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton. She had been a resident at the community home for the past seven years. On July 14, 1998, her husband died.

She was a member of the Federated Church and Women's Circle.

Survivors are three daughters, Velda Sedersten of Lincoln, Wanda M. Griess of Minden and Suer L. Rath of Aberdeen, S.D.; two sons, Verdell "Del" of York and Tom of Lincoln; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and two grandchildren

Hilda H. Schardt

Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999

Deshler resident Hilda H. (Hofts) Schardt, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in Deshler.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Phillip Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday at Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler and two hours prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Schardt was born June 27, 1916, to Otto and Emma (Lipker) Hofts in Kiowa. She attended Thayer County School District No. 44 through the eighth grade. On Nov. 20, 1934, she married Guy Schardt in Mankato, Kan.

She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors are three sons, Lonnie of Fresno, Calif., Delvin of Camdenton, Mo., and Donovan of Liberty, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or Park View Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.
