Herman B. Brost, 70

FORT MEADE, S.D. - Herman Boyd Brost, 70, of Ridge, Mont., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004. Herman was born Dec. 7, 1933, at Alliance, to Christy and Elizabeth Ruth (Hutchinson) Brost. He grew up at Alliance where he graduated from high school. On Oct. 23, 1952, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving until Oct. 12, 1956, after which he returned to Alliance where he ranched with his father. In 1957 he married Kay Stenberg at Alliance. The coupled moved to Ridge in 1964 where he continued to ranch ever since. Friends and family may attend a Celebration of Life at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Holiday Inn at Spearfish. A memorial has been established to the Henry Malley Memorial Library at Broadus, Mont. The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Vicki Piper, 51

ALLIANCE - Vicki Ann Piper, 51, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at her home. Vicki Ann was born March 23, 1953, at Chadron the daughter of Stan and Lois (Spalding) Stumf. She grew up at Chadron and attended school there. She graduated from Chadron High School in 1971. She attended Chadron State College for two years and graduated with an associate's degree. She went to New York to work as a nanny. She then moved to Boulder, Colo., to work as a secretary. She sang professionally at Linden and Chadron. Vicki met Pat Piper when she was singing at Herman's in Chadron. She married him on Oct. 20, 1979, at Camp Norwesca at Chadron. To this union were born Kerstin Marie and Sarah Ann. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at Chadron, with Pastor Russ Seger Officiating. Committal services will be at Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Phaneuf, 83

ALLIANCE - Margaret Mercer Phaneuf, 83, died Oct. 18, 2004, of acute complications following emergency surgery at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital at Denver. In hospice care the last two days of her life, Margaret wanted to return to Alliance, but her frail condition prevented fulfillment of that wish. She was born June 3, 1921, at Gibbon, daughter of Howard Mercer and Theda (Miller) Mercer. A graduate of Gibbon High School, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Case Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. She and Paul Phaneuf met in Cleveland, where they were married July 1, 1944. On Valentine's Day of this year, they celebrated the 60th anniversary of their first date. After their youngest daughter started elementary school in the late 1950s, Margaret earned her education degree from Chadron State Teacher's College. She was hired to teach fifth grade at Central School, where she taught for 24 years before retiring in 1983. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary organization for teachers. Margaret and her late husband, Paul, were residents of Alliance for 54 years. Paul died June 27 at Alliance. Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at the First Presbyterian Church at Alliance, with Rev. Stephen Roosa officiating. The family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance, 515 Emerson Ave., Alliance, NE 69301; or Chapter GC, PEO, c/o Joni Merrigan, 1012 Laramie Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. In keeping with PEO's commitment to educational philanthropy, Margaret's chapter will apply memorial gifts to loans or scholarships for women seeking to improve their lives through education.

Willis Furman Jr., 84

ALLIANCE - Willis Benton Furman Jr., 84, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the Box Butte General Hospital Hospice Room. Bill was born Sept. 28, 1920, on a ranch near Marsland, the oldest and only son of Willis and Martha (Hoffman) Furman, Sr. He finished high school at Marsland at the age of 15, and graduated from Chadron State College with a Bachelor's Degree. He worked various jobs thereafter. He enlisted in the Army Air Force on May 27, 1942, and served during World War II until his honorable discharge on Oct. 12, 1945. He married Mary Heskett upon his return from England, and they were stationed for a time at Laredo, Texas. After his discharge, he returned to the family ranch and was very active in the ranching organizations of the area, including the Nebraska Stockgrowers Association. Heart problems forced him to sell the ranch and move to Alliance, where he began his second career as a teacher at Alliance High School. He continued at that until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. As he requested, cremation has taken place at The Jolliffe Funeral Home and Crematory at Scottsbluff. There will be no public service, but a gathering of remembrance will be at his home at a later date. Condolences may be emailed to sympathy@jolliffefuneralhome.com to be forwarded to the family.

Ruth Ross, 85

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Ruth Ross, 85, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at her home of natural causes. Ruth Naomi Ross was born March 9, 1919, the daughter of Will and Agnes (Galusha) Dempsey at Clay Center. She was raised and educated on the family farm near Alliance with six brothers and sisters. Ruth received her primary education in a country school near the farm. She worked various jobs including a large farm in Illinois until she moved to Gillette, to see her oldest brother. She was employed by the local dry cleaning service at Gillette, where she met Keith Ross. On Sept. 15, 1945, Ruth was married to Keith Ross at Billings, Mont. The family lived and worked on local ranches until they had to move into Gillette so the boys could go to school. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Gillette, with Pastor Scott Firminhac officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery at Gillette. A memorial has been established in Ruth's name to benefit the Trinity Lutheran Church of Gillette. Condolences and/or donations may be sent in care of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home, 210 W. 5th Street, Gillette, WY 82716; or via the internet at www.stevensonandsons.com. Arlo "Mort" Roberts, 72

GENESEO, Ill. - Arlo "Mort Roberts, 72, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21. He was born Febr. 14, 1932, and married Audrey W. Wunn on April 26, 1952. He was a former UTU member and conductor for Burlington Northern Railroad at Alliance. Condolences may be sent to LRoberts@vcn.com. Minnie Miller, 79

HYANNIS - Minnie Fern Miller, 79, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. She was born march 22, 1925, at Mullen, the daughter of Carl and Tinnie (Long) Little. She grew up in the Mullen area and graduated from Mullen High School in 1942. She was married to Clifford Gier on May 20, 1944. They had two daughters, Patsy and Shirley. After they parted ways, Minnie moved to Hyannis where she was married to Pistol Miller in 1967. She worked at the Hyannis Bakery for many years. In 1979, Pistol was killed, and she moved to Alliance where she was a seamstress at Woolrich until her retirement in 1990. She lived in her home at Alliance until her sudden passing.Mrs. Miller's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the United Church of Christ at Hyannis, with Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. MDT Tuesday, Oct. 26, with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to the Hyannis Cemetery or the United Church of Christ at Hyannis. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva O. Long, 98

ALLIANCE - Eva O. Long, 98, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born July 19, 1906, on the family's Cherry County farm north of Mullen, to Amos Thomas and Theresa Elizabeth (Anding) Reigle. Eva graduated from Mullen High School in 1927. On Sept. 4, 1928, she was married to Paul C. Long at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at Alliance. They lived at Mullen where they owned and operated the Mullen Bakery and Telephone Exchange until moving to Alliance in 1942. She worked at J.C. Penney Company for a short time before beginning work at Montgomery Ward Store as a cashier from 1942 until retiring in 1968. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and Altar Guild, B.B.G.H. Auxiliary, B.N.R.R. Auxiliary, and R.S.V.P. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with Fr. Paul Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Church, Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Maxine Taylor-Green, 82

ALLIANCE - Mildred Maxine Taylor-Green, 82, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. She was born Sept. 6, 1922, at Belden, to Glenn Aaron and Alice May (Minegar) Roland.

She is survived by children, Marilyn Jo (Eldon) Schuler of Oskaloosa, Kan., Jack L. (Judy) Taylor of Arthur, Bonnie (Raymond) Thayer of Fremont, Frances Synoground of Scottsbluff, Merle E. Taylor of Bonn, Germany, Gary Taylor of Amarillo, Texas, Aaron Taylor of Spanaway, Wash., Richard (Ila) Taylor, Ima Jean (Robert) Mischnick, Dorothy Lunbery, Sheryl Taylor, Dennis Taylor and Kathy (Gene) Hansen all of Alliance; 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sisters Donna Downs of Omaha, Glennadine Barker of Wayne, Judy (Les) Meier of Belden, Eva Taylor, Mary Taylor and Janice (Lee) Wortman of Alliance. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands LeRoy Taylor and Marshall Green, daughter Alice Rose Malloy, son Marshall Abel Green, Jr., brothers Robert, Wayne and Kenneth, brothers-in-law Harold Taylor, Harry Taylor, Charles Downs and Eugene Barker, grandsons Jared Prelle, Nathan Schuler, granddaughter Christy Taylor and great-grandson Dustin Prelle.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Bates-Gould Chapel, with Pastor Eldon Schuler officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Freddie J. Shoemaker, 54

ALLIANCE - Freddie J. Shoemaker, 54, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Feb. 25, 1950, at Bridgeport, to Dale B. and Ruth L. (Payton) Shoemaker. He was baptized at Messiah Lutheran Church at Broadwater on April 13, 1966. On June 28, 1970, he was united in marriage to Virginia Doty at Alliance. To this union three sons were born, Troy, Travis and Trenton.

He is survived byhis wife Virginia "Jinny;" sons and daughters-in-law, Troy and Melissa Shoemaker of Scottsbluff, Travis and Kristy Shoemaker of Alliance and Trenton and Amanda Shoemaker of Yankton, S.D.; grandchildren Brooke, Dylan and Janaye of Alliance and Keaton and Kadin of Scottsbluff. He also is survived by his brothers Dick (Janet) Shoemaker of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert (Bonnie) Shoemaker of Hastings, and Larry of Broadwater; sisters Connie (Jim) Green of Peoria, Ill. and Diane (Mike) Judd of Elko, Nev.; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jerry and Norma Todd of Alliance; sisters- and brothers-in-law Beverly and William Yeager of Huachuca City, Ariz., and Marla and Fred Kober of Henderson, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Carlo Peonio and sister-in-law Karen Todd.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Pastor Bill Buschbom officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department or to the Scottsbluff Fire Department Honor Guard. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Maxine Nelson, 66

RUSHVILLE - Maxine May Jesse Leach Nelson, 66, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at her home after a heroic battle with cancer. She was born July 5, 1938, at Alliance, to Raymond and Alice (Townsend) Jesse. She made the choice to serve the Lord at an early age and remained true to those vows all of her life. On March 5, 1958, she was married to Sidney "Sid" Leach. To this union four children were born - Valeria, Vicki, Dennis, and Kent. They lived on the Jesse Ranch at Antioch, until 1983 when they then moved to Arizona. Sid died in November of 1989. On October 30, 1997, Maxine married a life long friend, Forrest Nelson of Rushville.

Maxine is survived by her husband, Forrest Nelson of Rushville; daughter, Valeria Monroe of San Antonio, Texas; sons, Dennis Leach and Kent (Cammy) Leach of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her mother, Alice Jesse of Alliance; brothers, Tom (Patty) Jesse of Denver, Colo., and Edward (Kathleen) Jesse of Antioch; daughter-in-law, Luanne Leach of Kearney; and will be greatly missed by Forrest's children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Jesse; her husband, Sidney Leach; her daughter, Vicki Leach; and one great-granddaughter, Sierra.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at the American Legion Hall at Alliance, with John Smart and Dwight Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements

Claudia Thompson, 88

ALLIANCE - Claudia M. Thompson, 88, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. Claudia was born March 22, 1916, at Gregory, S.D., to Jake and Esther (King) Roebuck.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Norma and Richard Corbitt of Somers, Mont., Janice and John Williams of Scottsbluff, and Larry and Mary Ann Schwaderer of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She also is survived by her brothers, Virgil Roebuck of Bridgeport, Morris Roebuck of Alliance, Robert Roebuck of Bayard, and Tom Roebuck of Minatare; sisters, Rosella Langmacher of Alliance, Nila Jean Snell and Sadie Lehmkuler, both of Fort Collins, Colo., and Joann Adamy of Anchorage, Alaska. Her parents, two husbands, three sisters, and four brothers preceded her in death. She will be sadly missed by her family, who loved her so much.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Doug Griger officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Boys Ranch at Alliance, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Reynolds, 61

ALLIANCE - Richard K. Reynolds, 61, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at his home.

He was born Feb. 24, 1943, at Alliance to Arthur and Ann (Andersen) Reynolds. On March 17, 1968, he married Mary Ellen Peterson at Alliance.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Mike Friesz of Alliance; son-in-law Joe Schlickbernd of Chadron; granddaughters Kendra Friesz and Chynna Schlickbernd. He also is survived by his father Art Reynolds; brother Jerry and wife Leona Reynolds all of Alliance; niece Cindy and husband Sid Underwood; and nephew Don and wife Joyce Reynolds; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Edna Peterson of Loveland, Colo., Martha (Tina) and John Freiberger of Alliance, Margaret and Joe Nelson of Lincoln, Mo. and George and Sandy Peterson of Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon (Schwaderer) Reynolds, daughter Shelly Schlickbernd, his mother, niece Wanda Reynolds, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Gus and Mary Peterson and his brother-in-law Frank Peterson.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent in care of the family at 314 East 15th, Alliance for designation at a later date. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Carpenter, 80
RUSHVILLE - Doris Evelyn Carpenter, 80, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at her home with family members at her side. She was born Dec. 14, 1924, at Gordon, to Clida and Florence (Glover) Cunningham. She grew up near Clinton, where she graduated from high school. Doris was married to Edward Orrin Bayliss on Sept. 26, 1945, at Gordon. They had five children. On May 21, 1985, she was married to Robert J. Hergert at Hot Springs, S.D. On June 27, 1989, she was married to Harlan Claude Carpenter at Rapid City, S.D. She was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church, the UMW Society and The American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at the United Methodist Church at Gordon, with Pastor Corey Jenkins and Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Ronald L. Keefer, 71
KEARNEY - Ronald L. Keefer, 71, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born Aug. 11, 1933, at Hemingford to Lester and Rowena (Price) Keefer. He was a graduate of Hemingford High School. He served his country during the Korean War from 1956 to 1959. He married Nancy L. (Kops) Braden on Dec. 10, 1971, at York. Ronald worked as a police officer at Tumwater, Wash., and York and Seward, as well as a drivers license examiner at York. He moved to Alliance in 1983.

The family may be visited at 510 Creswell, Alliance, and memorials may be sent in care of the family at P.O. Box 941, Alliance, NE 69301-0941. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Munger, 72
FREMONT - William R. "Bill" Munger, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Fremont Area Medical Center. He was born March 17, 1932, at Alliance, to Ralph and Elsie (Schaeffer) Munger. He grew up on a ranch near Alliance and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture High School at Curtis in 1949, and attended Doane College at Crete. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 10, 1953, to Feb. 9, 1955, during the Korean conflict. He moved to North Platte in 1965, and to Fremont in 1971. He married Anne Rock in 1954 at Alliance. They later divorced.

He married Sharon Riley Borman on July 13, 1991, at Fremont. Most recently, he was a Blue Cross/Blue Shield agent for the Bank Depositors Program. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Fremont, Knights of Columbus Council 1497 and Fr. Leo Rauss Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; past member of the Fremont Association of Life Underwriters and former Charter Life Underwriter for Ohio National Insurance, and qualified twice for their Million Dollar Round Table; former member of Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce Diplomat Club and Noon Optimist Club.

Donna J. Burton, 74
ALLIANCE - Donna Jean Burton, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born Nov. 24, 1930, at Alliance to Martin Jasper and Fannie Mabel (Weaver) Beals. She was married to Wesley Burton on Oct. 1, 1960, at Alliance. She is survived by her husband Wes; children Carol Glass of Alliance, David Carter of Athol, Idaho, Cathy Saxton of Hopkinsville, Ky, Julianne Brock of Lancaster, Ky., Troy Burton of Nashville, Tenn., and Tammy Burton of Athol; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Sr. Elaine Arbuthnot, 64
ALLIANCE - Sr. Elaine Arbuthnot, 64, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Marian Residence. She was born Cecelia Ann Arbuthnot on Aug. 5, 1940, at O'Neill, to James and Eileen (Duffy) Arbuthnot. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy at O'Neill in 1958. She professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1961, at Marycrest at Denver, Colo. She then received her B.A. degree in Romance Languages from Regis College at Denver in 1963; her M.A. in French from University of Notre Dame, Ind., in 1969; a certificate in grad. Theology from St. Mary's University at San Antonio, Texas in 1977; and a Library Science Certificate from Community College at Denver in 1978.

Claude Hammond, 89
ALLIANCE - Claude William Hammond, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born April 7, 1915, at Funk, to Jay T. and Ethel M. (Smith) Hammond. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1944 to January 1946. On July 22, 1936, he married Hulda Wallin at Chadron.

They lived at Chadron until moving to Ogallala in 1955. Claude retired from Nebraska Public Power District in 1977. He moved to Alliance in 1983. He is survived by his daughter and husband, Charlene and Bud Jeffrey of Marion, Iowa; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister Wanda Solberg of Alliance.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Norma Jensen officiating.

Arthur L. Ward, 81
ALLIANCE - Arthur Lee "Bub" Ward, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at his home. He was born June 8, 1943, at Alliance, to Benjamin and Olive (Benjamin) Ward. He married Mary Jane Strick Stick on July 6, 1947, at Alliance. He had worked for the Nebraska Fish and Wildlife Game Commission for many years. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., the Elks and the Red Angus Association.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Bates-Gould Chapel. Graveside services with military rites will be at 2 p.m. at the Crawford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Veterans Administration, or the Good Samaritan Health Care Center Alzheimer's Unit, P.O. Box 970, Alliance, NE 69301-0970. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
