Frank E. Morhart

Monday, Aug. 16, 1999

Hastings resident Frank E. Morhart, 89, of 1534 Crestmoor Drive died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morhart was born Dec. 15, 1909, to Elbert L. and Mabel (Buerstetta) Morhart in Red Cloud. In 1928 he graduated from Red Cloud High School and then attended the University of Cincinnati. On Nov. 21, 1936, he married Henrietta Hafner in Boise, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Army for 28 years, including during World War II in the European Theater. He retired as a lieutenant colonel. From 1954-75 he lived in Hastings and worked as an engineer inspector and chief purchasing agent at the Naval Ammunition Depot. He then moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1975. On Oct. 13, 1981, his wife died. He remarried in 1982 to Doris Kovar. They returned to Hastings in 1988.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Hastings Public Library and a premiere member of the Hastings Museum. He held the Jordan Medal with Charity Lodge No. 53 A.F.& A.M. of Red Cloud. He was also a member of the Tehama Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Judy Hudson of Santa Rosa; one son, Jud of Los Alamos, N.M.; one stepson, Linn Kovar of Coronado, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Mary Poshak of Kirkwood, Mo.; two grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings First Presbyterian Church or the Tehama Shrine.

Kathleen E. Martin

Monday, Aug. 16, 1999

Hastings resident Kathleen Ellen (MacInnes) Martin, 39, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. The remains were cremated. Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin was born Nov. 21, 1959, to Charles A. and Harriet (Robb) MacInnes in Flint. On Dec. 10, 1988, she married Tony Duane Martin.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Jeremy and Nicholas, both of Hastings; four brothers, Roly and Tommy, both of Michigan, Ralph of Vermont and Pat of Florida; and two sisters, Tammy Hazelton of Norfolk and Liz McGinnis of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family to establish a trust fund for her sons.

Ruth L. Stahnke

Former Glenvil resident Ruth L. Stahnke, 82, of 1032 Lane K, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Vern L. Webb

Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999

Leland, N.C., resident Vern L. Webb, 48, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, in Fairfield, Ohio.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Chapel in Wilmington, N.C., with the Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. at Brown Cemetery in Rose Hill, N.C. Visitation is until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter; one son; one stepdaughter; one stepson; five sisters, including Florence Crandall of Hastings; and two brothers.

Maxine B. Renken

Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999

Former Formoso, Kan., resident Maxine B. (VanMeter) Renken, 80, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary chapel in Hutchinson with the Rev. Harold E. Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson.

Mrs. Renken was born Aug. 12, 1919, to Chester L. and Gladys (Poole) VanMeter in Formoso. On Dec. 4, 1937, she married Otto A. Renken in Mankato, Kan. She lived in Hutchinson from 1949-60 and then moved to Formoso. In 1971 she returned to Hutchinson. On March 29, 1999, her husband died.

Survivors are one son, Richard L. of Hutchinson; two brothers, Ivan of Weber, Kan., and Marvin of Boliver, Mo.; two sisters, Norma Dull of South Hutchinson, Kan., and Barbara Foster of Cheney, Kan.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Reno County in care of the mortuary.

Everett H. Shepard

Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999

Hastings resident Everett Henry Shepard, 85, of 503 Lane A, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are Friday at J.H. Williams Funeral Home in East Providence, R.I. Burial will be in Spring Vale Cemetery in Rumford, R.I. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shepard was born Dec. 14, 1913, to Simon Everett and Caroline Marie (Marsh) Shepard in Seekonk, Mass. He married Helen Horne, who later died in 1987. He then married Maxine Garrett Campbell. He worked as head lineman for Narragansett Electric Co. in Massachusetts for 40 years until retiring in 1978. He lived in Tiverton, R.I., from 1951-87. He then moved to Peacham, Vt. Since 1989, he had been living in both Vermont and Nebraska.

He was a former member of the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Seekonk and a 50-year member of the Eureka Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Portsmouth, R.I.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Carol Silvia of Falmouth, Mass., Joan Mellotte of La Vale, Md., and Marcia Page of Peacham; one son, Robert of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Cude of Harvard and Leanne Meyer of Hastings; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Margaret M. Ineck

Friday, Aug. 13, 1999

Former Inland resident Margaret Mary (Lienert) Ineck, 83, of Lincoln, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in Lincoln.

Rosary is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lincoln. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ineck was born Sept. 11, 1915, to Charles and Mary (Samson) Lienert in Inland. She formerly worked as a stenographer with the state of Nebraska, Miller and Paine Department Stores in Lincoln and with Food Service at Lincoln Public Schools.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Survivors are her husband, Joseph M. Ineck; one daughter, Janet Doulas of Lincoln; one son, Thomas J. of Lincoln; one brother, Eugene of Kearney; and two sisters, Louise Siefken of Fort Collins, Colo., and Bernice Joy of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family or the American Diabetes Association.

Hazel E. Renz

Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999

Deshler resident Hazel E. (Larsen) Renz, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, in Deshler.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery in Ruskin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mrs. Renz was born May 28, 1911, to Anton and Elsie Skytte (Jensen) Larsen near Minden. On Aug. 1, 1929, she married Ebel "Dick" C.H. Renz at the Bethany Lutheran Parsonage in Ruskin. Her husband later died.

Survivors are two sons, M.D. "Cap" of Ruskin and B.L. "Cork" of Deshler; one daughter, Judi Werner of Carleton; one brother, Omar Larsen of Minden; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her one stepbrother.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.

Mary J. Illingworth

Friday, Aug. 13, 1999

Fairfield resident Mary Jo (Squires) Illingworth, 73, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at her home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Community Presbyterian Church in Fairfield with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Illingworth was born Oct. 11, 1925, to Elmer and Amy (Peshek) Squires near Fairfield. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1942. After high school, she worked at Dutton-Lainson Co. in Hastings and the Harvard Air Base at Harvard. On Jan. 7, 1947, she married Dean Illingworth at Manhattan, Kan. They farmed near Fairfield until 1994 when they moved into Fairfield.

She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Fairfield. She also was a past member of the Country Women's Club.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Janet Soucie of Deweese; one son, Rex of Fairfield; one brother, Roy of Fairfield; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Fairfield Legion Auxiliary.

Gertrude I. Brening

Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Gertrude Irene (Polenske) Brening, 82, of St. Helens, Ore., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in St. Helens.

Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Kohler Mortuary in Sutton with the Rev. Alex Wacker officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery.

Mrs. Brening was born March 30, 1917, to William G. and Clara R. (Suchland) Polenske at Kenesaw. On Dec. 23, 1941, she married Arthur Brening in Kenesaw. They farmed near Sutton until 1969 when they moved to Hastings. She worked at Woolworth's Department Store as a cook. In 1989 she and her husband moved to Las Vegas. Her husband died April 7, 1993. She then moved to St. Helens.

Survivors are one daughter, Cheryl Adams of St. Helens; one son, Don of Las Vegas; three sisters, Esther Hoppens of Moses Lake, Wash., and Edna Sorenson and Eleanor Rust, both of Hastings; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Norman W. Butcher

Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999

Hastings resident Norman W. Butcher, 76, of 926 N. Saunders Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. David L. Speicher officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Butcher was born Sept. 3, 1922, to Ward and Elzora (MacDaneld) Butcher in Coldwater, Kan. He graduated from Coldwater High School in Kansas and attended Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-46. He became the editor of the Western Star newspaper in Coldwater before earning his degree in divinity at Christ for the Nations College in Texas. In 1983 he moved to Hastings. On June 7, 1983, he married Marion Hueske. He was a Hastings Police Department chaplain.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Carol Cain of Berryville, Va.; two sons, Robert of Miami and Duane of Dyersburg, Tenn.; one stepson, Steven Neff of Spokane, Wash.; one sister, Freda Miller of Sandford, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Church of the Nazarene Building Fund or the donor's choice.

Ferne Arneson

Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999

Red Cloud resident Ferne (Phifer) Arneson, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.

Mrs. Arneson was born April 26, 1915, to John and Malinda (Olson) Phifer in Smith County, Kan. She attended school in Smith County. On May 11, 1936, she married Marvin "Pete" Arneson in Smith Center, Kan. They farmed in Webster County and owned and operated cafes in Inavale and Red Cloud.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, John of Abilene, Kan., and Jerry of Hope, Kan.; two daughters, Joan Jackson of Smith Center and Karen Elliott of Red Cloud; two sisters, Lelia Maydew and Hazel Craig, both of Smith Center; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and two grandchildren.
