Tuesday, March 14, 2000

Fairmont resident Jack Prentiss, 60, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Gary Divine officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery in Ruskin. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Prentiss was born Oct. 29, 1939, to Hardy Avery and Nina M. (Allen) Prentiss in Leaksville, Miss. He graduated from high school and attended college for three years. On Oct. 14, 1967, he married Judie Sykes in Nora. He was a truck driver for Schulz Transfer in Seward. He had lived in Fairmont for the last three years.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Jack Jr. of Leaksville and Russell of Polk; one daughter, Theresa Prentiss of Decatur; four sisters, Jessie Hicks of Simms, Ala., Vesta Marie Brewer of Leaksville, Reba Divine of Moore, Okla., and Elizabeth McMillan of Freeport, Fla.; two brothers, Russell and Donald H., both of Leaksville; and three grandchildren.

Memorials have been established and may be sent in care of the family.

Lucille Cress

Sunday, March 12, 2000

Graveside services for Hastings resident Lucille Cress, 94, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, who died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Villa Grace, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hillside Cemetery in North Loup with the Rev. Melanie L. Adams officiating. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Lillian V. Farm

Tuesday, March 14, 2000

Former Upland resident Lillian V. (Farm) Farm, 93, of Wilcox died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Wilcox Methodist church with the Revs. Warren K. and Jean B. Alnor officiating. Burial will be in the Wilcox Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Farm was born July 14, 1906, to D.P. and Johanna (Uphoff) Farm in Upland. She grew up in the Upland area. On Aug. 2, 1929, she married Wesley W. Farm in Franklin. They lived on a farm near Wilcox until 1968 when they moved into town. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Wilcox Methodist Church and an extension club in Wilcox.

Survivors are one daughter, June Cameron of Hastings; one son, W. Allen of Minden; one sister, Lena Hall of Groton, Conn.; three grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial may be given to the Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Mabel A. Lockard

Tuesday, March 14, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Mabel A. (Larsen) Lockard, 82, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kronborg with the Rev. Jack Eske officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mrs. Lockard was born Jan. 20, 1918, to Louis and Stena (Sorensen) Larsen in Minden. She lived there until 1928 when she moved with her family to Roseland. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1936. In 1938 she moved to Omaha where she worked as a bank clerk at the Home Office of Security Acceptance Corp. On Nov. 20, 1956, she married Leslie Lockard in Hastings. They moved to Columbus and then to Johnson Lake in 1962. From 1962-71 she and her husband owned the Berg Vault Co. They moved to Marquette in 1971. She spent her winters in Mesa, Ariz., from 1981-1996. In 1984 her husband died. She moved to Grand Island in 1992.

Surviving is one brother, Stanley of Hastings.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Roy S. White

Tuesday, March 14, 2000

Lebanon, Kan., resident Roy S. White, 65, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon, Kan., with the Rev. Allen Scheer officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery in Esbon. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the church. Melby Mortuary of Mankato, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. White was born Aug. 26, 1934, to Roy and Madge (Reams) White in Walsenburg, Colo. On Feb. 8, 1957, he married Theresa McCoy in Fort Belvoir, Va. He served in the U.S. military in Korea. He was a laborer and worked for area farmers. He retired from Esbon Elevator in Esbon.

Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Donna Burgess of Esbon, Denise Fiene of Lebanon, Deloris Delimont of Beloit, Kan., and Joanne Sibley of Red Cloud; one son, Roy of Imperial Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Jack of Doniphan and Tom of Sutton; four sisters, Violet French of Pueblo, Colo., Gladys Kugler and Hazel Jameson, both of Franklin, and Madge Bennett of Marietta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Sister Jean Marie Callahan

Former Hastings resident Sister Jean Marie Callahan, O.P., 87, of St. Catharine, Ky., died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at University Hospital of Louisville, Ky., from injuries sustained in a car accident Feb. 24 in Loretto, Ky.

Wake services are 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Catharine Hall on the grounds of St. Catharine Motherhouse. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Catharine Hall.

Sister Callahan joined the Dominicans of St. Catharine in 1934. She served as academic dean and president of St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky., from 1955-67. Most recently, she served as an assistant development officer at the college. She served as principal of St. Cecilia High School in Hastings from 1967-72. She then was elected to the Governing Board of the Dominicans of St. Catharine, serving until 1980. From 1976-1984, she was principal of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and St. Vincent de Paul School in Louisville, Ky. From 1987-89, she was principal of St. Mel School in Glouchester, Mass.

In 1992, she received the Veritas Award from St. Catharine College.

Survivors are one sister, Sister Suzanne Callahan, O.P., of St. Catharine; and two brothers, Thomas V. Callahan of Louisville, Ky., and Lawrence A. of Washington, D.C.

Memorials may be sent to St. Catharine College, 2735 Bardstown Road, St. Catharine, KY 40061.

Hermona 'Mona' Martini

Monday, March 6, 2000

Former Hastings resident Hermona 'Mona' G. (Aspegren) Martini, 84, of Ashland, Ore., died Monday, March 6, 2000, at her daughter's home in Ashland.

Memorial services are 3 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. John Minor officiating.

Mrs. Martini was born Feb. 28, 1916, to Herman and Amy Aspegren at Hastings. She grew up in Hastings, graduating from Hasting Senior High School. She moved to California in the 1940s. On Nov. 6, 1936, she married John D. Martini. He preceded her in death. She moved from Sioux Falls, S.D., to Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1941. She lived in Hollywood, Studio City and Northridge, all in California, before moving to Ashland in 1984.

She was a member of All Saints Church in Beverly Hills, Calif., and Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland.

Survivor is one daughter, Monyeen Wilkey of Ashland; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Thera D. Haskin

Tuesday, March 7, 2000

Former Hastings resident Thera D. (Dolph) Haskin, 92, of Minneapolis died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in Minneapolis.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Hastings. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Werness Brothers Funeral Home in Minneapolis is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Haskin was born Aug. 31, 1907, to Everett and Dorothy (Rhodes) Dolph at Correctionville, Iowa. She graduated from Central High School in Omaha. On Jan. 20, 1931, she married Evert Haskin in Omaha. They lived near Minneapolis until her husband retired in 1968, and then moved into Hastings. Her husband died in 1994. She then moved to The Kensington, where she lived until moving to Minneapolis in 1998.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Hastings and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She also was a member of Lake Harriet Christian Church in Minneapolis. She was active in the Adams County Historical Society, Community Concert Association and the YWCA, all in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Barbara Nelson of Topeka, Kan.; two sons, Richard of Atlanta and Robert of Minneapolis; one sister, Amber Kish of California; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Christian Church of Hastings.

Ella M. Wolf

Thursday, June 3, 1999

Former Red Cloud resident Ella M. (Craig) Fox Wolf, 76, of Omaha, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, in Omaha.

Prayer services are 7 p.m. Sunday at Bellevue Memorial Funeral Home chapel in Bellevue with the Rev. Parker Smith officiating and services are 1 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church of Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial is 3 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Monday at the church in Hastings.

Mrs. Wolf was born June 30, 1922, to Malley Harwood and Bertha Mabel (Cox) Craig in Hoyt, Okla. On May 15, 1942, she married John G. Fox. From 1953-83, she lived in Red Cloud. Her husband died in 1973. On July 10, 1982, she married Kenneth Wolf.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Bruce of El Cajon, Calif.; one daughter, Kay Baldwin of Bellevue; one brother, Benjamin Craig of Wasco, Calif.; two sisters, Myrtle Hamlin of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mildred Wrenn of Marleton, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Jesus Video Project.

Charles 'Leroy' Hanson

Wednesday, June 2, 1999

Former Superior resident Charles "Leroy" Hanson, 74, of Fairfield, Ark., died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, in Fairfield Bay, Ark.

Graveside services are 4 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery near Superior with the Rev. Andrew Menke officiating. Visitation is 1-3 p.m. Monday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mr. Hanson was born April 10, 1925, to Arthur and Christine (Block) Hanson in Superior. He grew up on a farm near Superior and graduated from Superior High School. In 1945 he married Nellie Crook. In 1956 he and his family moved to Seward. He worked for J.J. Exon Office Equipment Co. in Lincoln and then for Jack C. Graff Clothier in Seward. His wife died in 1971. In 1978, he married Mary Zimmerman. He and his wife lived in Sioux City, Iowa, where they started their own specialty advertising business. In 1993 they retired and moved to Fairfield, Ark.

He sang in the choir at St. Francis of Assis Church in Fairfield, Ark., and the Rotary Club.

Survivors are his wife; five daughters, Akele Hanson Brophy of Washington, D.C., Alice Marley of Blenco, Iowa, Theresa Wilhelm of Lincoln, and Celeste Zimmerman and Benita Doohen, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one son, Norman Zimmerman of Trinity, N.C.; and two brothers, Norman of Denver and Burdette of Superior.

Andrew C. 'Drew' Meyer

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Minden resident Andrew Clay "Drew" Meyer, 15, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, near Nebraska City as a result of a traffic accident.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the C.L. Jones Middle School in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer and the Rev. Ed Treat officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery at Minden. Visitation is 3-5 and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at the Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Andrew was born Jan. 4, 1984, to Peter and Laura (Etzelmiller) Meyer in Omaha. He and his family moved to Minden in 1989. He recently had completed his freshman year at Minden High School, where he was active in sports and other activities.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden.

Survivors are his mother of Minden; his father of Scottsbluff; one brother, Spencer of Minden; one sister, Logan Meyer of Minden; and his grandfather, Russell Meyer of Minden.

His grandmother, Carolyn Etzelmiller of Minden, died in the same car accident.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother.

Memorials may be given to the Andrew Meyer Memorial Fund.

Carolyn Etzelmiller

Tuesday, June 1, 1999

Minden resident Carolyn (Silvrants) Etzelmiller, 69, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at University Hospital in Omaha as a result of a traffic accident near Nebraska City.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the C.L. Jones Middle School in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer and the Rev. Ed Treat officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery in Minden. Visitation is 3-5 and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Etzelmiller was born Feb. 17, 1930, to Victor and Beulah (Ellis) Silvrants in Minden. She grew up in the Minden area. In 1948 she graduated from Minden High School. On Aug. 7, 1949, she married Richard Etzelmiller. She owned and operated Tots & Teens and the City Cafe, both in Minden. In 1995 her husband died.

She was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden and the Minden Garden Club.

Survivors are two sons, Roger of Casper, Wyo., and Mark of Ogallala; two daughters, Vicki Struss of Juniata and Laura Meyer of Minden; and eight grandchildren.

Her grandson, Andrew Meyer, died in the same car accident.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jeff; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Carolyn Etzelmiller Memorial Fund.
