Wendell D. Williams

Tuesday, July 20, 1999

Republican City area resident Wendell Dean Williams, 58, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Taylor Manor housing development near Republican City.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Republican City with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial will be in Republican City Cemetery. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Williams was born June 28, 1941, to Elvin Francis and Wilma Jean (Jones) Williams at Hastings. He attended grade school in Prosser and graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1959. On June 17, 1965, he married Carol K. Waterbury at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. They lived at Kenesaw until 1975, Doniphan until 1978, Scottsbluff until 1981, Ogallala until 1983 and Kearney until 1998, when they moved to Taylor Manor near Harlan County Reservoir. He served as sales manager for Wilson Seed Co. He owned and operated Husker Windshield Repair in Kearney and Husker Mowing Service. He drove the school bus for Alma Public Schools after moving to Republican City.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Republican City, the Army National Guard in Hastings and the Hicks-Siegal American Legion 364 in Naponee. He is a former member of the Masonic lodge in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Connie Geis of Odessa; two sons, Brian of Omaha and Bradley of Kearney; three sisters, Linda Hess and Jo Edmondson, both of Kenesaw, and Karen Hansen of Hastings; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials have been established.

Elmer C. Hoefer

Tuesday, July 20, 1999

Hastings resident Elmer C. Hoefer, 84, of 11135 W. Lochland Road, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 9:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Immanuel Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery near Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. The family will be present 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Hoefer was born Sept. 30, 1914, to Gerhard and Meta (Kothe) Hoefer on the family farm southwest of Hastings. He attended Kelly School in rural Adams County. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands and Okinawa from 1942-45 in the 96th Infantry Division. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Combat Infantryman Badge and two battle stars. On May 1, 1954, he married Evelyn Uden at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a farmer in Adams County.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where held several church offices, DAV and American Legion Post No. 11.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Tammy Gentert of Hastings; one brother, Walter of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

Gladys I. Doehring

Friday, July 16, 1999

Hebron resident Gladys I. (Havelka) Doehring, 97, died Friday, July 16, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron with the Rev. Jonathan Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and two hours prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Doehring was born June 3, 1902, to Joseph and Alice (Townsend) Havelka in Greeley, Colo. She graduated from Hardy High School in Hardy. She taught country school in Nuckolls County for two years. On Feb. 11, 1922, she married Paul Doehring in Belleville, Kan. He preceded her in death. She worked for 30 years at Blue Valley Home in Hebron. She retired at age 80.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron.

Survivors are three sons, Arlo of Superior, Norman of Salina, Kan., and Lemoine of Leavenworth, Kan.; three daughters, Mable Osby of Portage, Ind., Ruth Evers of Hebron and Shirley Richardson of Brighton, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-granchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Lavonne and Merlyn; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Blue Valley Home Activities Fund or Grace Lutheran Church.

Bennie G. Royster

Saturday, July 17, 1999

Hastings resident Bennie G. Royster, 66, of 2411 Bateman St., died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Judith Allen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Royster was born July 7, 1933, to Fred and Vera (Denton) Royster of Reevesville, Ill. He attended Hastings Public Schools. On Oct. 22, 1951, he married Genevieve White. He worked as a salesman for K & B Ice Cream Co., Fleming Manufacturing and Thompson Candy Co., all in Hastings. He then started his own company as a mobile home toter. In 1995 he retired and worked as an escort driver for mobile home toters.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Debra Duty of Lincoln, Barbara Royster of Hastings, Kathleen Aulner of Norfolk and Christine Royster of Lakewood, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Mary Mack Keller

Saturday, July 17, 1999

Hastings resident Mary Mack Keller, 98, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at her home.

Rosary will be 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services at the church.

Miss Keller was born June 13, 1901, in New York City. In 1903 she arrived on the Orphan Train and was adopted by Michael and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Keller of Lawrence. She grew up and attended school in Lawrence. In 1944 she moved to Oregon and worked as a domestic aide for 30 years. In 1975 she returned to Hastings.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her brothers.

Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church or Good Samaritan Village.

W. Wilson Shurigar

Saturday, July 17, 1999

Kenesaw resident W. Wilson Shurigar, 86, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

The remains were cremated. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Tom Gould officiating. Visitors can sign the guest book 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.

Mr. Shurigar was born April 29, 1913, to John and Molly (Godwin) Wilson on a farm north of Kenesaw. He attended school in Kenesaw. In 1931 he graduated from Kenesaw High School in Kenesaw. On Sept. 16, 1940, he married Mary L. Phillips in Seneca, Kan. They moved to Omaha where he made airplanes for Glen L. Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue. In 1948 he and his wife moved to Kenesaw, where he owned and operated a custom combining business for 30 years. During the winter, he worked for Rural Gas and Petroleum Station in Hastings. In 1978 he retired.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw and the Elks in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Glenda Shurigar of Hastings; three sons, Jon of Aurora, Colo., Clinton of North Platte and Steven of Holstein; one sister, Dorothy Hall of Grand Island; one brother, Marion of Kenesaw; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Viola M. Crowe

Wednesday, July 15, 1999

Bladen resident Viola M. (Vance) Crowe, 82, died Wednesday, July 15, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Bladen with the Revs. Baldeo Singh and Marvin Coffey officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Red Cloud. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crowe was born Feb. 16, 1917, to Ilef and Jessie (Hite) Vance in Bladen. She attended Shelhammer rural school in Webster County. In 1935 she graduated from Bladen High School. On Feb. 28, 1939, she married Harold Crowe. They lived in Hastings, where they worked at Ingelside Hospital. They later returned to Bladen and were part owners of Bladen Sand & Gravel Co. In the late 1960s she worked at the Blue Hill Nursing Home in Blue Hill. On Dec. 9, 1990, her husband died. On June 1, 1999, she moved to Grandview Manor in Campbell.

She was a member of the Bladen United Methodist Chuch, United Methodist Women, Harmony Friendship Club, the Rebecca Lodge, the Bladen Senior Citizens and was a past board member of Webster County Senior Citizens.

Survivors are three daughters, Vonda Crowe of Bladen, Haroldene Harris of Holstein and Debra Thayer of Enterprise, Kan.; one son, Keith of Bladen; two brothers, Ilef Vance Jr. and Glenn Vance, both of Bladen; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son; one sister; one brother; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Bladen United Methodist Church.

Fred A. Ollendorf

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Hastings resident the Rev. Fred A. Ollendorf, 86, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died there Thursday, July 15, 1999.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Howard B. Franzen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

The Rev. Ollendorf was born March 24, 1913, to the Rev. August and Elizabeth (Wolff) Ollendorf in Wisner. Since 1940 he was a minister at Good Shepherd Church in Lindy; St. Paul's Church in Follet, Texas; Christs Lutheran in Shattuck, Okla.; Zion Lutheran in Platte Center; St. John's Church in Northboro, Iowa; St. John's Church in Leigh; St. John's Church in Cozad; St. John's Church in Bendena, Kan.; and St. John's Church in Hampton, Iowa. On April 8, 1951, he married Ruth Peters. In 1979 he retired from the ministry and moved to Good Samaritan Village. On May 30, 1992, his wife died.

He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Synod in Iowa.

Survivors are one sister, Ruth Engstrom of Lincoln; and one brother, Walter of Mesa, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Eleanore E. 'Ellie' Yilk

Lillian L. Lutschg

Monday, July 12, 1999

Hastings resident Lillian L. (Schneider) Lutschg, 94, died Monday, July 12, 1999, in Wichita, Kan.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. July 24 at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Ponca City, Okla., with the Rev. Gary Strang officiating. Cochran Mortuary of Wichita, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lutschg was born Sept. 9, 1904, to George and Sarah Schneider in Otis, Kan. She spent her early years in the Otis and Dighton, Kan. area. In 1924 she married Henry Lutschg. They lived in Great Bend, Kan., and Wichita before moving to Ponca City. On Nov. 5, 1969, her husband died. In 1994 she moved to Hastings.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ponca City.

Survivors are two daughters, Vera Baker of Hastings and Norma Daniels of Rockford, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Leah Pursifull.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ponca City.

Bryce E. Ray

Wednesday, July 14, 1999

Nuckolls County resident Bryce E. Ray, 80, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at the Superior Family Medical Clinic in Superior.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ray was born April 16, 1919, to Clifford H. and Edna (Tumbleson) Ray on a farm east of Nelson. In 1937 he graduated from Nelson School in Nelson. He attended school in Wichita, Kan., and worked for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita. On June 15, 1941, he married Beulah Shroyer in Wichita. In 1944 they returned to Nuckolls County and farmed until his death.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Superior and its board. He also was a 4-H leader.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Milan of Omaha, John of Superior and Terry of Lincoln; two daughters, Murlene Schleufer of Nora and Nancy Turley of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.
