Jerry A. Carpenter

Thursday, July 8, 1999

Former Hastings resident Jerry A. Carpenter, 53, of Topeka, Kan., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Topeka.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church Gollaher Chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Jim Keyser officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mr. Carpenter was born June 13, 1946, to Glenn and Fara (Barta) Carpenter in Hastings. He grew up in Hastings. In 1964 he graduated from Hastings Senior High School. After graduation, he began working for Dutton-Lainson Co. in Hastings. On Sept. 2, 1967, he married Sharon Tindall in Hastings. They later moved to Gering where he worked in sales management at Blish-Mize Co. in Gering. In 1990 they moved to Topeka where he continued to work for Blish-Mize Co. until his death.

He was a member of the Methodist faith.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Shelley Carpenter of Topeka; one son, Todd of Grand Island; his mother; one sister, Joyce Carpenter of Hastings; and one brother, Bob Carpenter of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be given to Midland Hospice in Topeka or the American Cancer Society.

Louis E. Hoagland

Friday, July 9, 1999

Hastings resident Louis E. Hoagland, 87, of Village Green, Good Samaritan Village, 900 E. B St. Apt. No. 209, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Hoagland was born April 1, 1912, to Frank and Anna (Uden) Hoagland in Glenvil. He attended rural school near Glenvil. He began farming at an early age and farmed for 50 years near Hastings. From 1941-45 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in the 185th Field Artillery Battalion. On May 12, 1946, he married Mary Hill. In 1990, his wife died. On June 6, 1993, he married Anna Wilson.

He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Linda Hoagland of Omaha, Eileen Wildasin of Hastings and Diane Hobbs of Alliance; one son, Alan of Hastings; one sister, Tacy Krull of Hastings; three brothers, Melvin, Ivan and Clyde, all of Hastings; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and one brother.

Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church

Carl H. Finnigsmier

Friday, July 9, 1999

Kenesaw resident Carl H. Finnigsmier, 99, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church near Juniata with the Rev. Steven Heiners officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery near Juniata. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home of Kenesaw and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Finnigsmier was born June 1, 1900, to William H. and Elizabeth (Nagel) Finnigsmier in Oxville, Ill. On March 1, 1906, he and his parents moved near Juniata. He attended Christ Lutheran School in Juniata for eight years and helped on the family farm. On Dec. 14, 1922, he married Elfrieda Augustin at Christ Lutheran Church in Juniata. He took agriculture classes through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1923 he started farming himself. In 1950 he started working for the Navy Ammunition Depot near Hastings. In 1953 he retired from farming. In 1966 he retired from the Navy Ammunition Depot. His wife dided Dec. 18, 1979. In 1977 he moved to the Kensington in Hastings. In 1983 he moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. In 1999 he moved to the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Bernice Wyman of Juniata; one sister, Mary Uden of Hastings; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Donald; one sister; and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Hour.

Marion M. Koehler

Thursday, July 8, 1999

Norfolk resident Marion M. (Kratochvil) Koehler, 68, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at her home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pierce with the Rev. Lynn Riege officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Parish Cemetery in Pierce. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Stonacek Memorial Chapel of Pierce.

Survivors are four sons, including Dave of Hastings; one daughter; four sisters; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Louie A. Pigeon

Thursday, July 8, 1999

Hastings resident Louie A. Pigeon, 89, of 1339 Pershing Road died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Rosary and services have been changed from Monday to Tuesday. Rosary is 10:45 a.m. and services are 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Pigeon was born Oct. 22, 1909, to Joseph and Mary (Gauvreau) Pigeon in Glenvil. He attended School District 33. In 1929 he graduated form Hastings Senior High School. On Nov. 26, 1932, he married Edna Cable in Hastings. He worked as a self-employed contractor and also subcontracted with Johnson Imperial Homes in Hastings. He retired in 1974.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Deloris Durham of Fountain Valley, Calif., Linda Nohr of Poway, Calif. and Cindy Bonahoom of Hastings; one sister, Marie Cooper of Puyallup, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dan; three brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Gerald W. Monie

Thursday, July 8, 1999

Hastings resident Gerald W. Monie, 62, of 723 S. Lexington Ave., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at his home.

Graveside services and military rites are 2 p.m. Monday in Parkview Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Mr. Monie was born Sept. 12, 1936, to Clarence and Nona "Berth" (Morris) Monie in Guide Rock. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School. From 1959-61 he served in the U.S. Army in the 2nd Armored Division. He worked for Timberlock Truck Co. and Davison's Nursery. He later worked for Western Land Roller, now Ingersoll-Dresser Pump Co., and retired after 21 years.

He was a member of the Eagles Club.

Survivors are four brothers, Verle of Denver, Eugene "John" of Hastings, Robert of Kenesaw and Richard of Pauline; and one sister, Judy Monie of Hastings.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Gregory L. 'Greg' Young

Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000

Former Hastings resident Gregory L. "Greg" Young, 43, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Graveside services are 3 p.m. Monday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Young was born Oct. 27, 1956, to John and Marilee (Daugherty) Young. He grew up in Hastings and later moved to Fairfield. On March 9, 1999, he married Leah Bashor. He worked as a car mechanic. He also drag raced and drove race cars.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters; his father and stepmother, Arlette; two sisters, Kathy Batten of Juniata and Donna Bramman of Hastings; and three brothers, Terry of Clay Center, Scott of Fairfield and Dwayne.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Leo Ochsner

Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000

Sutton resident Leo Ochsner, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. George Syms officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Argonne American Legion Post No. 61 of Sutton. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ochsner was born April 14, 1920, to Gustav and Martha (Billigmeier) Ochsner near Stockham. He attended District No. 14 country school in Clay County. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. In 1949 he married Irene Lucille Miller near Geneva. They farmed near Saronville. In 1979 they moved into Sutton.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church and the Argonne American Legion Post No. 61. He also served on the Co-op Board in Eldora.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Lauren of Maurice, Iowa, and Lyndon and Lon, both of rural Saronville; two sisters, Alice Ollenburg of Omaha and Doris Gans of Park Forrest, Ill.; three brothers, Roy of Lincoln, Reuben of Omaha and Milton of Seattle; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation; Sutton Christian School; Unity Christian School in Orange City, Iowa; or Sioux Center Christian Grade School in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Margaret L. Bloom

Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000

Hastings resident Margaret L. (Stoddard) Bloom, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are at a later date. Burial will be at a later date in the North Platte Cemetery. Aspen After Care in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bloom was born May 6, 1925, to Archie and Grace Stoddard in Harrisburg. She married Raymond Bloom. He preceded her in death.

Survivors four daughters, Peggy Bloom of Colorado, Diana Leautersack of Houston, Betty Wood and Pamela Kahler, both of North Platte; one son, Arthur of North Platte; one sister, Jessie Liemkohl of Kimball; two brothers, Mike of Idaho and Bud of Gering; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sonja M. Latimer

Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000

Doniphan resident Sonja M. (Amick) Latimer, 48, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at her home after a year-long battle with cancer.

A private family service will be at a later date. There is no visitation. The remains were cremated. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Latimer was born Sept. 13, 1951, to Carl and Renee (Youngson) Amick in Grand Island. She graduated from high school in Doniphan in 1969 and attended Temple Buell College in Denver. She lived in Arizona for many years until 1992 when she returned to Doniphan. She worked as a licensed real estate salesperson and was a partner with her brother in Amick Realty in Doniphan. She and her family were instrumental in developing Amick Acres East and Amick Acres West subdivisions near Doniphan. She also worked with her father in the Amick livestock business as a licensed and bonded livestock dealer.

She earned several awards in the Nebraska Quarter Horse Association and the Nebraska High School Rodeo.

Survivors are her parents of Doniphan; one brother, John of Doniphan; and her grandmothers, Lillian Amick of Grand Island and Victoria Youngson of Minden.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers.

Esther V. Yoder

Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000

Shickley resident Esther V. (Saltzman) Yoder, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in Fairmont.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Mennonite Church in rural Shickley with the Rev. Wilton Detweiler officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Shickley. Visitation starts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mrs. Yoder was born May 28, 1911, to Peter and Elizabeth (Reeb) Saltzman in Fairmont. She married Ralph R. Yoder and he later preceded her in death.

Survivors are one son, Merlin of Grand Island; one brother, LeVoy of Shickley; two sisters, Beulah Roth of Milford and Verna Saltzman of Shickley; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six great-stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.
