Frederick McMurphy, 56
NORTH PLATTE - Frederick Charles "Rick" McMurphy, 56, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at his home. He was born Nov. 12, 1948, at Fairbury, to Fred Edward and Catherine Marie (Logan) McMurphy. He grew up at Fairbury where he graduated from high school in 1967. Frederick married Sherry Lou Meyer on April 20, 1970, at Belleville, Kan. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad at Alliance from 1977 to 1981. The couple moved to Fairbury in 1981, where he was a bus driver, and in 1989, moved to Holdrege where commuted to work at I.B.P. at Lexington where he was an electrician. In 1990, they moved to North Platte where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as an electrician. He was a member of the I.B.E.W Union.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C and Sycamore, with Fr. Arthur Faesser officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 25, and before the service on Saturday. Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Myers, 87
MARION, Ohio - Mary L. Myers, 87, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, March 22, at Marion General Hospital. She was born in Gallia County, Ohio, on Oct. 14, 1917, the daughter of Pearl and Neva (Lemley) Amos. She graduated with the class of 1936 from Gallia Academy High School at Gallipolis, Ohio. She was married to James C. Myers on June 19, 1936.

Private services for the immediate family will be in Gallia County at a later date. A memorial has been established to the National Kidney Foundation. Boyd Funeral Home at Marion is in charge of arrangements.

Milford H. Briscoe, 43
ALLIANCE - Milford H. Briscoe, 43, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at his home. He was born Jan. 29, 1962, at Alliance, to Frederick and Charolette (Pierce) Briscoe.

There will be a private service for the family. Memorials may be sent in care of the family at 2331 CR 59, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lawton McKenzie, 78
ALLIANCE - Lawton "Bill" Earl McKenzie, 78, formerly of Seneca, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Good Samaritan Village. He was born Feb. 7, 1927, at Hockerville, Okla., to Benjamin and Ivy (Sharp) McKenzie. He was one of seven children. Bill married Mary Jimerson on Aug. 30, 1958, at Eaton, Colo. He worked for Monfort Packing at Greeley, Colo., until his retirement in 1979. The couple then moved to Seneca where they owned and operated the Cattleman's Restaurant. Bill also worked for Butch Lavore at the Loup Co. Veterinary Clinic at Mullen. Bill's hobbies included gardening, trap shooting, music, holidays which he enjoyed with his grandkids, and always having a good joke to share with his friends.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. MST Wednesday, March 23, at the Seneca Auditorium, with Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Seneca Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials have been established to Prairie Have Hospice, Good Samaritan Village of Alliance or the Seneca Auditorium building Fund. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lynette Rand-Webb, 29
TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Lynette Rand-Webb, 29, died in her home at Twin Falls. Lynette was born April 23, 1975, at Cheyenne, Wyo., to Curtis and Susan (Brubaker) Rand. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1992. She served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a dental hygienist. Lynette also was a model and worked for several companies. She was a devoted mom, daughter and sister who will be dearly missed by her family.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Fort Worth, Texas. Mount Olivet Funeral Home at Saginaw is in charge of arrangements.

Alvon Kehr, 83
BERTRAND - Alvon "Audrfey" Kehr, 83, died Wednesday, May 25, at the Bertrand Nursing Home. He was born May 5, 1922, to Alvon Martin and Jennie Lilliam (Moser) Kehr on the family farm southwest of Bertrand in Gosper County. He attended school in Phelps and Gosper counties and began farming at an early age prior to entering the service. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and was in combat with the 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division in Italy, France and Germany. In 1946, he married Addie Marie Dunkin. They made their home at Oxford. Following his discharge, he was employed by the Nebraska Department of Roads as a heavy equipment operator, retiring after 40 years of employment. In March of 2005, due to failing health, he became a resident of the Bertrand Nursing Home. He was a charter member and life member of the Martin Horn Post No. 219 American Legion at Oxford. He loved gardening, fishing, hunting and his family and friends.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home at Holdrege, with Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Interment will be the Oxford Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 27, with the family greeting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home at Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Lehl, 90
HEMINGFORD - Elmer Lehl, 90, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born May 13, 1915, at Lincoln, to Nick and Mollie (Firestine) Lehl. His family moved to Paxton when he was a young man. He later moved to the Gering Valley and farmed for several years. Elmer married Dorothy Mazanec on May 1, 1941, at Chadron. Together they farmed in the Mitchell area until 1946 when they moved to start the family farm 20 miles west of Hemingford. He continued farming until his health forced him into retirement in 2004.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, at the United Methodist Church at Hemingford, Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or to the Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda Piihl, 85
LAKESIDE - Wanda Piihl, 85, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 8, 1919, at Bingham, to Roy Glen and Sylvia Pearl (Taylor) Dimond. On Nov. 29, 1941, she was married to Raymond Piihl at Ogallala. Wanda taught school in the area of Ashby, Gordon, Ellsworth and Alliance for 43 years before retiring.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, at the Bingham Cemetery, with Rev. Doug Griger officiating. Memorials may be given to the Lakeside United Methodist Church or the Bingham Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty L. Downer, 86
Memorial services for Betty Downer, 86, who died in her home in Gering, Monday, May 23, 2005 will be held Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Nebraska High School Rodeo, Chadron State Track & Field or Gering Summer Band Program. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. The casket will be closed. Visitation will be Wednesday 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:00 a.m. until service time. She was born to Robert and Beulah (Rashaw) Franklin, November 17, 1918 in McGrew, Nebraska. Mrs. Downer was graduated from McGrew High School in 1936 and Chadron State College in 1939.

She began teaching at Harrisburg High School in 1939 where she met her husband, Allerton Downer. They lived in Banner County until 1957 when they moved to Gering. Betty was a 4-H leader for four years before she began teaching at Melbeta High School. During her career at Melbeta she held many positions including classroom teacher, volleyball and track coach for 15 years, as well as serving as principal for a short time. She retired in 1985 after teaching 28 years in Melbeta. She enjoyed her family first and foremost and never missed a chance to watch and encourage them in their various endeavors. She took great pride in her flowers and yard, which kept her active. In September, 2004, she and her family received the Family Tree Award during Family Day at Chadron State College. The award was presented to families that have had at least three generations attend CSC. Betty was an active member and currently historian of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Nebraska Retired Teachers' Association.

Robert J. Snyder, 91
YORK - Robert J. Snyder, 91, died Friday, May 20, 2005. He was born March 31, 1914, on a farm near Waco, to George and Louise (Barth) Snyder. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church at Waco. After graduating from Waco High School in 1931, he toured the Midwest with dance bands and road shows for several years. He hired out on Burlington Railroad in 1937. He served in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific from Oct. 23, 1941, to Oct. 25, 1945. He was a member of the 134th Infantry National Guard Band. He married Velma Roberts at Edgemont, S.D., on April 11, 1958. He retired as a conductor from Burlington Northern Railroad at Alliance, where he and his wife resided for 40 years before moving to York in 1979. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at York, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 156, Order of the Eastern Star, Grace Chapter No. 87, and The American Legion.

Funeral services were Monday, May 23, at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jeff Wulf officiating. Interment was in York's Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice, c/o Velma Snyder, 813 Burlington, York, NE 68467. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements. Richard C. Lyman, 81
ALLIANCE - Richard Calvin Lyman, 81, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born August 26, 1923, at Gering, to Charles F. and Hazel (Aling) Lyman. He attended grade school at Gering through the third grade. The family then moved to Lincoln, where Dick graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941 and attended the University of Nebraska. He joined the Navy in 1943. He was a pharmacist mate and worked in surgery at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. He also served on the Destroyer USS Leutz. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 after serving 3 1/2 years. After the war he returned to college and was affiliated with Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation, he was employed as a bookkeeper with the Wait Lumber Company at Scottsbluff. He married Maryetta Parchen in 1948 at Lincoln. They had two sons, Richard and Scott. He joined the Bloedorn Lumber Company at Englewood, Colo. as Assistant Manager in 1952. While living at Englewood, he was president of the Sertoma Club and vice-president of the Jaycees. In 1959 the family moved to Alliance where he was the manager of Alliance Lumber Company until his retirement in 1983. While living at Alliance Dick served as charter president of the Alliance Lions Club and president of the Shrine Club. He was a member of the Masons and Scottish Rite. He was an elder and trustee of the Presbyterian Church. He and Maryetta enjoyed antiques and traveling.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at the First Presbyterian Church at Alliance. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery at Gering. Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Luella Clingenpeel, 95
HEMINGFORD - Luella "Dudie" Clingenpeel, 95, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Hemingford Community Care Center, where she had been a resident since 1999. Luella was born at Greensburg, Ind., on Oct. 14, 1909, the daughter of Asa and Jenny (Swope) Batchelor. On Nov. 28, 1929, she was married to Stanley Clingenpeel at Greensburg. They made their home at Bloomington, Ind., until moving to Hemingford in 1972 after his retirement from RCA. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. While at Bloomington, she was an active member in the Lambda Chi Omega Sorority. She also was active in the Adventist Community Service Center and the RSVP prior to entering the Care Center. She always enjoyed helping others and had a hobby of writing poetry.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Hemingford, with Pastor Wayne Hayward officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Hemingford Community Care Center or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert H. Hagan, 77
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Robert Horace Hagan, 77, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 18, 200,5 after a long illness of emphysema and lung cancer. He was born June 10, 1927, at Hannibal, Mo., to Horace and Agnes Hagan, and grew up at Alliance, Neb. Bob joined the Navy at Navy Pier in Chicago when he was 17 years old. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1949. He married Mary Catherine Franklin of Sheridan, Wyo., on Sep. 17, 1949. He began a distinguished 30-year career with the Bell Telephone Company in 1949, with positions at Mountain Bell Telephone at Cheyenne, Wyo., and Denver, Colo.; AT&T at New York City; Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, N.J.; and finally retiring from Mountain Bell at Salt Lake City in 1982. In his retirement Bob pursued bicycling, skiing, gardening, and traveled extensively throughout the United States.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday May 23, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where friends may call from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Committal will be in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Helen E. Oldoski, 91
YAKIMA, Wash. - Helen Edna Oldoski, 91, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at the Gasseling House.

Helen was born March 22, 1914, at Orient, Iowa, to Roy and Clara (Bowen) Green.

Helen was a member of the Summitview Church of Christ and the Sunrise Court No. 46 Order of Amaranth. She also volunteered at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for ten years.

Mrs. Oldoski's funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel.

Visitation was from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the funeral chapel.

Colleen Allen, 77
BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. - Colleen Wilson Allen, 77, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Mesa, Ariz.

She was born Feb. 27, 1928, at Emporiums, Penn., to Bobby Allen and Thora (Easterbrook) Wilson.

She spent most of her life as an entertainer, starting at the age of 12 when she sang on "The Amateur Hour" on KDKA, Pittsburg, Pa.

Later she and her sister Donna became known as The Beaver Valley Sweethearts, and were well-known in the Alliance area. After leaving Alliance, they were featured on the WLS National Barn Dance in Chicago until the closing of the Barn Dance.

Her memorial service will be at Riverview R.V. Resort at a later date.
