Bernice Liehr

Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999

Hastings resident Bernice (Weintraub) Liehr, 86, of The Kensington, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at her home.

Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. There is no visitation or viewing. The remains were cremated.

Mrs. Liehr was born July 10, 1913, to Benjamin and Anna (Weiss) Weintraub in Chicago. She later married Andrew Liehr. They owned and operated a dry cleaning business and shoe shop in Windsor, Colo., since 1958. They moved to Hastings earlier this year.

She was a volunteer at the Windsor Severance Museum and the Windsor Library.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Betty Liehr of Hastings; one sister, Shirley Miller of Arlington Heights, Ill.; and one brother, Sid of Arlington Heights.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to The Kensington in Hastings.

Arlen O. Stark

Friday, Nov. 19, 1999

Former Hastings resident Arlen O. Stark, 76, of Tucson, Ariz., died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Eldorado Hospital in Tucson.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Monday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. James J. Meysenburg officiating. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stark was born Nov. 1, 1923, to Virgil and Martha (Meininger) Stark in Hastings. He married Mary V. Dryden. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a plant operator the Nebraska Public Power District for 40 years in Hastings and Lincoln. On May 16, 1972, his wife died. In 1988 he retired. He then lived in Vancouver, Wash., and Tucson.

He was a member of the DAV, VFW and the Hastings Catholic Activities Association.

Survivors are one daughter, Sherri Farkas of Tucson; three sons, Thomas and Kenneth, both of Lincoln, and Jack of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.

Norma L. Hoffman

Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999

Hastings resident Norma Louise (Andrews) Kreutz Hoffman, 83, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Villa Grace.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dale Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Evangelical Cemetery in rural Clay Center. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, 1-9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hoffman was born April 20, 1916, to Roy and Eva May (Solomon) Andrews in Cherry County. She grew up in Trumbull and graduated from Trumbull High School. She attended Kearney State Teacher's College for two years. On July 26, 1941, she married Howard Kreutz. She worked as a bookkeeper for Farmer Union Co-op in Juniata for 11 years. In 1972 her husband died. On Nov. 20, 1977, she married Merle Hoffman in Trumbull. She lived in Alma for a short time. Her husband preceded her in death earlier Oct. 8.

She attended the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Central Nebraska Rock and Mineral Society and the 4 C's Extension Club.

Survivors are one son, Neal Kreutz of Harvard; two stepsons, Richard Hoffman of Vacaville, Calif., and Robert Hoffman of Hastings; one daughter, Janet Shafer of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Helen Lind and Wilma Rezner, both of Omaha, and Barbara Schnauber of Elkhorn; one brother, Ivor of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Eunice F. McDonald

Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999

Hastings resident Eunice Fern (Stevens) McDonald, 82, of 233 N. Hastings Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Mrs. McDonald was born Feb. 8, 1917, to Martin William and Eleanor "Nellie" (Ackerman) Stevens in LaPlatte. She attended schools throughout Nebraska and spent her high school years in McCook. On May 20, 1935, she married Robert M. McDonald in Denver. He died June 13.

She was a member of the McCook Memorial Methodist Church. She also was a Girl Scout troop leader, a member and volunteer for the Parent Teacher Association and a volunteer for the Shrine Children's Hospital. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Eureka Chapter for 40 years, the McCook Elks Course and Heritage Hills.

Survivors are one son, Donald of Lincoln; two daughters, Sharon Morrison of Whitefish, Mont., and Honey Lou Bonar of Hastings; one sister, Sharlaine Robarchek of Potwin, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Shrine Children's Hospital.

Dean H. Ruebsamen

Friday, Nov. 19, 1999

Giltner resident Dean H. Ruebsamen, 97, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Giltner United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dwight DeLaet officiating. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Ruebsamen was born March 25, 1902, to Henry C. and Dora (Spear) Ruebsamen in Hamilton County. He grew up on a farm between Giltner and Harvard. He attended school at East Boag and Hart Schools. On Oct. 25, 1925, he married Alberta Dawson in Grand Island. They farmed southeast of Giltner. On Oct. 29, 1944, his wife died. He remarried June 3, 1951, to Lucille Lorenson in Grand Island. He retired in 1966. His wife died in 1992.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors are five sons, Darrel of San Antonio, Dale of Huntington Beach, Calif., Neil of Grand Island, Marvin of San Jose, Calif., and Wilbur of Santa Maria, Calif.; one daughter, Merna Valen of Irvine, Calif; 26 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Anne; three sisters; one brother; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mildred A. Winslow

Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999

Burr Oak, Kan., resident Mildred A. (Cline) Winslow, 94, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Northbranch Friends Church in Jewell County, Kan., with the Rev. Joe Vance officiating. Burial will be in the Northbranch Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Winslow was born Dec. 2, 1904, to Arthur W. and Viola (Hadley) Cline in Northbranch, Kan. She graduated from Northbranch Academy in 1923. On Dec. 2, 1924, she married Nathan L. Winslow. They farmed near Northbranch. On June 26, 1985, her husband died. In 1997 she moved to Good Samaritan Center in Superior.

She was a member of the Northbranch Friends Church, the Missionary Society and the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Survivors are two sons, Earl of Burr Oak and Vaden of Oregon City, Ore.; two brothers, Lawrence of Friendswood, Texas, and Lowell of Wichita, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Thelma and Elva; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Thelma G. Knaak

Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999

Beatrice resident Thelma G. (Koch) Verno Knaak, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Beatrice Community Hospital.

Prayer services are 9:45 a.m. and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice with the Rev. Doug Gunkelman officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Springs Cemetery. Visitation is until 9:30 p.m. today at Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter; three stepdaughters, including Joanne Shottenkirk of Hastings; one sister; one brother; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Thelma M. Davis

Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999

Hastings resident Thelma Mae (Petteys) Davis, 72, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wilcox with the Revs. Warren Alnor and Jean Alnor officiating. Burial will be in Freewater Cemetery in Wilcox with military honors by veterans organizations of Hildreth and Wilcox. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma.

Mrs. Davis was born April 13, 1927, to John Alden and Thelma J. (Lewis) Petteys in Wilcox. She graduated from Wilcox High School in 1944. She attended Hastings College from 1944-48. From 1949-51, she worked as a bank cashier at First National Bank in Wilcox. She served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-54. She was stationed at the 2500th Air Base Wing at Mitchel Air Force Base in Long Island, N.Y., as Airman Second Class and was a payroll clerk. She received the National Defense Service Medal. On Sept. 17, 1954, she married Jay Frank Rohrer in Wilcox. They lived in Harrisburg, Penn., and Enola, Penn., until 1961 when they moved back to Wilcox. The marriage ended and she married James Price Davis on March 16, 1964, in Topeka, Kan. She lived in Wilcox until 1988 when she moved to The Kensington in Hastings. In 1995 she moved to Perkins Pavilion.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star in Holdrege, the DAV in Kansas City, Mo., and the Wilcox American Legion Post No. 377.

Survivors are three daughters, Sally Berlowitz of Columbia, Md., Janice Kouns of McMinnville, Ore., and Ileata Kenley of Roseland; one sister, Cora L. Cole of Northridge, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald; one brother; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Donald D. Freeman

Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999

Deshler resident Donald Duane Freeman, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Deshler Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William B. Thornton officiating. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery with military services by American Legion Halfman Post No. 352 of Deshler. Deshler Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Freeman was born July 26, 1925, to Guy and Ruth (McNutt) Freeman in Ft. Collins, Colo. He moved with his family to Deshler at an early age. He graduated from Deshler High School in 1943. From 1943-46 he served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate during World War II. On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Lucille Moritz in Lincoln. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two years. From 1951-54 he re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. He returned to Deshler to help with the family grocery business and bought the business in 1964. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of the Deshler Presbyterian Church and an elder in the Presbyterian Session for eight terms. He also was a member of the American Legion Halfman Post No. 352, Thayer County Izaac Walton League and Hebron Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Deshler Chamber of Commerce and Deshler Lions Club. He served 26 years as a Deshler city councilman.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Don of Lincoln and David of Grand Island; one daughter, Mary Lemon of Olathe, Kan.; one sister, Joyce Heidelk of Fairbury; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or the American Cancer Society.

Darrell G. Karr

Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999

Campbell resident Darrell G. Karr, 52, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident near Campbell.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Bladen with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial with military rites will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Bladen. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Karr was born Sept. 28, 1947, to Norman R. and Regina (Krichau) Karr in Red Cloud. He grew up in Bladen and graduate from Bladen High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-70. On Sept. 4, 1966, he married Connie Mahin. He was assistant manager at the Co-op Elevator in Blue Hill. In 1978, he and his wife moved to a farm near Bladen. He managed the Co-op Elevator in Bladen until 1996. He then worked for Trotter Fertilizer Co. in Bladen. They moved to Campbell this year.

He was a member of the Bladen United Methodist Church and the Blue Hill American Legion Post.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Brian and Dustin, both of Campbell, David of Blue Hill and William of Bladen; his mother of Blue Hill; three brothers, Garold of Hastings and Craig and Jeff, both of Blue Hill; and four sisters, Charlene Reiman, Pamela Karr and Patty Karr, all of Blue Hill, and Tammie Strickland of Stamford.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials have been established.

Paul N. Kamler Sr.

Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999

Former Geneva resident Paul N. Kamler Sr., 72, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, in Grand Island.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva and services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva with Monsignor Ivan Vap officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kamler was born Oct. 28, 1927, to Henry and Catherine (Schafer) Kamler in Grafton.

Survivors are three sons, Paul Jr. of Bladen and Mike and Kevin, both of Hastings; two daughters, Penny Czarnek of Hastings and Kathy Tockey of Fairfield; two sisters, Agnes Kleinschmidt of Geneva and Emma Beetley of Fairbury; 10 grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
