Kenneth M. Sample

Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Kenneth M. Sample, 87, of the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Blue Hill Cemetery. Kleine Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sample was born April 20, 1912, to Charles and Jesse (Porter) Sample in Hastings. He attended Sheldon Academy and Hastings High School. In 1932, he married Helen E. Bachman. They lived in Juniata and they worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. He later worked for Diamond T. Truck Co. in Hastings. He and his wife moved to Edgar where he drove truck for a short while. They then moved to Wood River where he worked for Fairbanks Farm Implement Dealer. In 1972 his wife died. He also was a mechanic for the Grand Island Airport Authority. He recently moved back to Wood River.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Survivors are three sons, Kenneth L. of Pueblo, Colo., Donald R. of Great Bend, Kan., and Roger D. of Wichita; two sisters, Dorothy Jeager of Clay Center and Erma Turner of Red Bluff, Calif.; one brother, James S. of Jacksonville, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon; one son, Ronald; one sister; and two grandchildren.

Charles W. 'Chuck' Jenkins

Monday, Nov. 15, 1999

Kenesaw resident Charles W. "Chuck" Jenkins, 69, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Arietta C. Topham

Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999

Bladen resident Arietta C. (Piel) Topham, 78, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. There will be no visitation. The remains were cremated.

Mrs. Topham was born May 13, 1921, to Archie and Ella (Toap) Piel in Blue Hill. She started teaching elementary school at age 18. She received her teaching credential from Kearney State College. In 1946, she married Keith Topham. In 1960 they moved to Guam. She taught school there and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Guam. She retired in 1969. On July 19, 1970, her husband died.

She was a member of the Bladen Methodist Church and the Rebekkah Lodge.

Survivors are two daughters, Paula Griess of Galt, Calif., and Lori Certo of Soulsbyville, Calif.; two sons, Ronald and Craig, both of Bladen; one sister, Opal Killough of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Mary Lanning Home Away From Home.

Earl M. Osborne

Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999

Superior resident Earl M. Osborne, 93, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Brodestone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Williams Funeral Home in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior.

Mr. Osborne was born Aug. 28, 1906, to Roy and Mae (Barksdale) Osborne in Frankfort, Kan. He grew up in Erving, Kan., where he graduated from high school. He attended Concordia Junior College in Kansas. On May 1, 1928, he married Effie Mae Brown. They moved to Erving where he farmed and drove truck for a short time. He then worked with Hill Oil Co. in Beloit, Kan. He was transferred to Superior where he managed the Super Service Station. He later worked for the utility department in Superior until his retirement in 1973. He worked part time for Kile's Campers in Superior.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Volunteer Fire Department in Superior.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Janice Montgomery of Howard, Colo.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, J.L., and one brother.

Ethel I. Weber

Monday, Nov. 8, 1999

Former Hastings resident Ethel I. (Stickels) Weber, 79, of Folsom, Calif., died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Folsom.

Services were Friday at Fair Oaks First Baptist Church in Folsom. Burial was at Lakeside Memorial Lawn in Folsom. Miller Funeral Home of Folsom was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Weber was born Sept. 18, 1920, to Charles O. and Blanchette (Pullen) Stickels in Lincoln. She graduated from Hasting Senior High School in 1938. In 1941 she married Hilbert "Bert" Weber. He later preceded her in death.

Survivors are two sons, Charles of Folsom and Jon of Rocklin, Calif.; one brother, Charles of Hastings; two sisters, Mary Anthes of Lincoln and Aletha McDonald of El Cajon, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lynn; one brother; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church's Hallelujah Choir.

Alvey E. Turner

Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Former Hastings resident Alvey E. Turner, 72, of Terre Haute, Ind., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.

Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Norton Cemetery in Norton, Kan., with the Rev. Ronald Scheimo officiating. Visitation is until 8:30 p.m. today at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton.

Mr. Turner was born Nov. 26, 1926, to Robert Aljo and Ruby M. (DeWester) Turner in Selling, Okla. He moved to Norton with his family and attended school there. From 1950-53 he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. On Dec. 31, 1966, he married Bernice Nicholson in Almena, Kan. They lived in Almena, Norton and Holdrege before moving to Hastings in 1990. He worked as an auto mechanic.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and the American Legion.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Alvey Jr. of Medicine Lodge, Kan., Richard of Delaware and Terry of Wichita, Kan.; four daughters, Mary Walker of Shelton, Martha Turner of Craig, Colo., Joan Bahensky of Crete and Karla Bergman of Hastings; eight stepchildren; two brothers, Elvin of Lincoln and Melvin of Oregon; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

A memorial has been established.

Janice J. Hungate

Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999

Former Hastings resident Janice J. (Bruce) Hungate, 71, of Lincoln died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Andrew McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mrs. Hungate was born March 21, 1928, to Edgar F. and Elizabeth May (Crisman) Bruce in Hastings. She married James Q. Hungate. She was a teacher for Lincoln Public Schools and retired in 1985.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, O.E.S. Starcraft Chapter No. 307 and Daughters of the Nile Naphis Temple No. 66.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Bruce of Evergreen, Colo., and Bruce C. of Modesto, Calif.; one daughter, Jane Hungate of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Sesostris Shrine Transportation Fund or the donor's choice.

Ruth A. Logan

Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident Ruth Alice Logan, 88, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at her home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Balch Cemetery at Formoso, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Miss Logan was born Oct. 3, 1911, to William F. and Lillian May (Robinson) Logan near Lovewell, Kan. She graduated from Formoso High School. She worked as a telephone switchboard operator and later as a nurse's aide.

She was a member of the Christian Church and the Christian Church Gleaners. She was also a Sunday school teacher and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are two brothers, William of Mankato and Charles of Formoso; and three sisters, Vera Reed and Anita Switzer, both of Formoso, and Lillian Dieckman of Alton, Kan.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Irvin F. 'Tiny' Metzger

Monday, Nov. 8, 1999

Former Trumbull resident Irvin Frederick "Tiny" Metzger, 90, of Montrose, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa.

Private graveside services are Saturday in Oakland Cemetery at Fort Madison, Iowa. Visitation is after 4 p.m. today with the family present from 4-8 p.m. at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

Mr. Metzger was born Sept. 7, 1909, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Kleber) Metzger in West Point, Iowa. On June 28, 1931, he married Viola C. Kudebeh in Donnellson, Iowa. They lived in Trumbull where he was an ironworker. In 1991 they moved to Montrose.

He was a member of Montrose Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Carole Bengtson of Bloomington, Minn., and Kathy DeVries of Lincoln; one brother, Philip of Corydon, Iowa; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandchild.

A memorial has been established. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to King-Lynk Funeral Home, 3507 Avenue L, Fort Madison, IA 52627.

Arietta C. Topham

Lloyd F. McCune

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999

Hastings resident Lloyd F. McCune, 71, of 2511 W. Eighth St., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. McCune was born June 8, 1928, to Earl J. and Velma (Stunsberry) McCune in Glenvil. On May 25, 1950, he married Gwen Anderson in Minden. From 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. He then returned to Hastings and worked at Debus Bakery, now Metz Bakery, for 46 years. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of the VFW.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Scott McCune of Hastings; one daughter, Lynda Johnson of Kenesaw; one sister, Lorine Kendall of Fremont; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Dona G. Genereux

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999

Campbell resident Dona G. (Bryan) Genereux, 69, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. today and services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Campbell with the Revs. James Schrader and John Vincent O.S.C. officiating. Burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery in Campbell. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Genereux was born Aug. 15, 1930, to Robert and Agnes (Cline) Bryan in Elm Creek. She attended Kearney State College for two years. From 1950-53 she taught in Campbell. On June 25, 1953, she married Cleo F. Genereux in Campbell. She was a substitute teacher in Campbell for several years.

She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and its Altar Society.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Jerry of Campbell; one daughter, LuAnn Kosse of Campbell; one brother, Charlie of Elm Creek; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

A memorial has been established.
