Kenneth V. Lyda

Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999

Former Hastings resident Kenneth V. Lyda, 74, of Ralston, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Mercy Care Center in Omaha.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Los-Stake Center in Omaha. Burial is in Cedardale Cemetery in Papillion. Boyd E. Braman Mortuary of Omaha is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lyda was born Feb. 14, 1925, to Henry and Mae Lyda in Caldwell, Kan. He served in World War II at the battle of Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart. He was stationed with the 4th Marine Division at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. On Dec. 18, 1945, he married Aileen Koch in Hastings. He worked at Swift and Co. in Hastings and Fairmont Foods in Dodge City, Kan., and Omaha.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Jim of Omaha; one daughter, Jody Fila of Glendale, Ariz.; one brother, Wayne of Enid, Okla.; one sister, Nadine Williamson of Arkansas City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Missionary Fund, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Papillion.

Russell W. Reeve

Monday, Nov. 8, 1999

Nelson resident Russell Wayne Reeve, 92, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Nelson Community United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.

Mr. Reeve was born Sept. 25, 1907, to John C. and Laura Gertrude (Newton) Reeve in Nelson. He attended grade school at Brown School District and graduated from Nelson High School in 1923. He farmed with his parents. On Sept. 7, 1929, he married Audrey Williams. They lived near Nelson. He farmed until 1958 when he started working for Farmers Union Oil Co. in Nelson. In 1964 he and his wife bought Obit Inn in Nelson. They owned and operated it until 1971. He then worked as a carpenter with Guy Bruce. On Feb. 15, 1990, his wife died.

He was a former member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ. He also was a member of the Brown School District Board. He was precinct assessor in Blaine Precinct for a year.

Survivors are four daughters, Shirley Reeves of Norton, Mass., Gwendolyn Tracy of Erie, Colo., Bonnie Vest of Greenwood and Marceline Keim of Salina, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Charlene; two brothers; two sisters; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent in care of the family.

Evelyn Harris

Monday, May 3, 1999

Burr Oak, Kan., resident Evelyn Harris, 88, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Monday at Northbranch Friends Church in Jewell County, Kan., with the Revs. Joe Vance and Lester Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Northbranch Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harris was born March 1, 1911, to William Carl and Elsie V. (Robinson) Wallace in Esbon, Kan. A lifelong Jewell County resident, she attended a rural school and graduated from Esbon High School. She received a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kan. In 1928 she began teaching in a rural Jewell County school. In 1977 she retired from the Burr Oak school system. On June 29, 1932, she married Neal C. Harris. They lived in the Northbranch area. Her husband died Feb. 12, 1983.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors are one son, Jerry of Burr Oak; and one brother, Glenn Wallace of Burr Oak.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to Northbranch Friends Church or American Cancer Society.

Dale Eugene White

Monday, May 3, 1999

Edgar resident Dale Eugene White, 72, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Edgar.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Shickley with the Rev. Duane Simonson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Edgar Cemetery at Edgar. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. White was born June 15, 1926, to Asa and Maggie (Judy) White on a farm east of Edgar in Clay County. He attended rural schools. He graduated from Edgar High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Germany. He returned to Edgar. He worked for the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings. On June 22, 1957, he married Margaret Marie Bohlen at Zion Lutheran Church in Shickley. He continued to work at the ammunition depot. He later worked for the Clay County Department of Roads. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Shickley and American Legion Post of Edgar.

Survivors are his wife of Edgar; one daughter, Debra Mason of Junction City, Kan.; one son, Dennis of Lincoln; three sisters, Melva Schurr, Evelyn Anderson and Jan Royster, all of Hastings; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Denise Renee; two sisters and two brothers.

Joseph O. "Joe" Etter

Tuesday, May 4, 1999

Deshler resident Joseph O. "Joe" Etter, 90, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Dale Bussinger officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery north of Superior. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Etter was born July 14, 1908, to Hugh and Alice (Gile) Etter on a farm in Republic County, Kan., near Scandia, Kan. He attended rural School District 87 and high school at School District 10 at Scandia. He farmed in Republic County. On Oct. 31, 1932, he married Crystal Irene Ahrens of Courtland, Kan. He worked for Champlin Refining Co. and the Harlan County Irrigation Project in Kansas and Nebraska. He also was a construction foreman and maintenance supervisor of the Big Little inch pipe line in Hamilton, Ohio. He later was superintendent for the North Atlantic Construction Co., helping to build the Greenland Air Base, and a superintendent building grain elevators in Kansas, Nebraska and many southern states. He retired in 1972 and they moved to Sylvia, Kan. His wife died Feb. 20, 1974, shortly after their 40th wedding anniversary. On Nov. 7, 1974, he married Cleo L. Harris in Sylvia.

Survivors are his wife of The Lutheran Beverly Care Home in Belleville, Kan.; three sons, Junior of Forest Park, Ga., Don of Gainesville, Ga., and Larry of Hutchinson, Kan.; one daughter, Alice Delka of Hardy; one brother, Jacob of Wendall, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Melvin; two brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Burnece C. Wiedel McKenzie

Monday, May 3, 1999

Hebron resident Burnece C. (Hergott) Wiedel McKenzie, 84, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Paul Sheehy and Tom Wiedel officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. McKenzie was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Gilead to Michael and Mary (Daringer) Hergott. She attended Thayer County District 17 near Gilead until the eighth grade. She did housework for several families in the area during her teen-age and young adult years. On Aug. 31, 1938, she married Benjamin Wiedel at Alexandria. They farmed south of Hebron for many years. He died in 1981 in a farm tractor accident. On June 9, 1990, she married Ferd W. McKenzie in Hebron. He died Jan. 10, 1999.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, Pioneer Center and Love Thy Neighbor Club, all of Hebron.

Survivors include one son, Michael J. "Jack" Wiedel of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; five daughters, Jeanette Else and Joan Hintz, both of Hebron, Dorothy Hintz of Belvidere, Cathy Wiedel of Lincoln and Darlene Emanuel of Cincinnati, Ohio; one stepson, Paul McKenzie of Osage Beach, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Mary Marr of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Faye McKenzie of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Lucille Wiedel of Fairbury, Kathie Landkamer of Columbus and Rose Rauner of Hebron; two brothers, Don Hergott of Mission, Texas, and Ed Hergott of Hebron; 18 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Social Hall Fund or Thayer County Health Services.

Verna Marie Bosley

Tuesday, May 4, 1999

Hastings resident Verna Marie (Gruver) Bosley, 97, of 1401 N. Hastings Ave. died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating and 2 p.m. Saturday at Palisade United Methodist Church in Palisade. Burial will be in Palisade. Visitation is one hour prior to services Friday at the Hastings church and one hour prior to services Saturday at the Palisade church.

Mrs. Bosley was born Dec. 15, 1901, to Doctor Franklin and Nellie Mae (Smith) Gruver in a sod house in Hayes County. After graduating from Palisade High School, she attended Grand Island School of Business for two years. On Jan. 1, 1920, she married Charles M. Bosley. She moved from Palisade to Hastings in 1975. She was a homemaker. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of Palisade United Methodist Church in Palisade, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and 8 & 40. She was a 76-year member of American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are one daughter, Nadine B. McCreary of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Robert C. of McCook and Warren G. of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the American Legion Auxiliary child welfare program.

Mary "May" Flynn

Monday, May 3, 1999

Kenesaw resident Mary "May" (Gerten) Flynn, 99, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Kenesaw Haven Home.

Rosary, followed by services, is 10:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Revs. James J. Meysenburg and Thomas Au officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Flynn was born Nov. 9, 1899, to Nick and Mary (Willmes) Gerten on a farm near Roseland. She attended Bush country school and Assumption Catholic School. She cared for her parents for many years. In 1949, she and her family moved to Hastings. In July 1952, she married Frank Flynn. She worked for Debus Baking Co., the Naval Ammunition Depot and Hastings Regional Center. She owned and operated The Little Diner in Hastings for a short time. She also was a beautician and ran a beauty shop in her home.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.

Survivors is one sister, Helena Heuertz of Aurora, Ill.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Memorials may be given to Hastings Catholic Schools.

Albert C. "Ab" Braun

Sunday, May 2, 1999

Hebron resident Albert C. "Ab" Braun, 94, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron with the Rev. Bruce Berggren officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation is at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mr. Braun was born April 23, 1905, to Fred and Wilimenia (Hofts) Braun in Ruskin. In 1919 he moved with his family to Carleton. He attended and graduated from Carleton High School in 1925. On May 7, 1928, he married Ruby I. Houchin in Strang. He farmed near Carleton. In 1945 he and his wife moved to a farm near Hebron. He retired from farming in 1976. In 1979 they moved into Hebron. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 1998.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Charles of Hebron; three daughters, Marilyn McDermet of West Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Lou Koterzina of Omaha and Judy Braun of Fresno, Calif.; one brother, Elmer of Hebron; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Hastings resident Verna M. Bosley died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are pending.

Alice Ludwig

Sunday, May 2, 1999

Deshler resident Alice Ludwig, 93, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in Deshler.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Visitation is until 6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler. The casket will be closed.

Mrs. Ludwig was born Oct. 10, 1905, to Henry and Marie (Wehking) Kloepper in Effingham, Kan. She married Gotthilf Ludwig. He preceded her in death. She was a former resident of Ruskin and a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler.

Survivors are two sons, Robert and Richard, both of Deshler; one brother, Elmer Kloepper of Hastings; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by an infant brother.
