Thelma M. Wolfe

Dec. 17, 1998

Former Tribland resident Thelma Maxine (Jessup) Wolfe, 84, of Phoenix died Dec. 17, 1998, in Phoenix.

Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. The remains were cremated. A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary in Phoenix was in charge of arrangements

Mrs. Wolfe was born Sept. 13, 1914, to Ursa S. and Ester Mae (Paulson) Jessup in Stratton. She lived in Hastings for several years, where she attended Pershing School. Her father died in 1921. The family then moved to a farm near Minden. In 1938 she graduated from Kearney State Teacher's College with a bachelor's degree. In 1939 she received her master's degree from Columbia University in New York City. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Max H. Wolfe. For 21 years she taught elementary school and junior high school reading in Wantagh, Long Island, New York. Her husband died Sept. 9, 1966. In 1970 she retired and moved to Venice, Fla. In 1988 she moved to Phoenix.

She was the organizer and first president of Wantagh Faculty Organization.

Survivors are one daughter, Patti Herington of Phoenix; one sister, Betty Mae Friskopp of Minden; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Vern H. Kiehl

Tuesday, May 25, 1999

Guide Rock resident Vern H. Kiehl, 87, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Alvin E. Trucano officiating. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery.

Mr. Kiehl was born May 3, 1912, to William and Clara L. (Korb) Kiehl in Jewell County, Kan. He attended the Guide Rock schools. On Feb. 4, 1931, he married Pauline T. Reeve in Red Cloud. They lived near Burr Oak, Kan., until 1933, when they moved to Guide Rock. His wife died Feb. 23, 1992.

Survivors are two daughters, Betty Ronnau of San Ygnacio, Texas, and Thelma Frans of Phoenix; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Harold Kiehl; one brother; and one grandson.

Donita W. Wiggins

Monday, May 24, 1999

Former Minden resident Donita W. (Gillaspie) Wiggins, 83, of Tiffany Square Retirement Home in Grand Island died Monday, May 24, 1999, at the home.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Revs. M. Manick Samuel and Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home of Minden.

Mrs. Wiggins was born July 14, 1915, to Trev and Ivy (Waller) Gillaspie in Lincoln. She grew up in the Lincoln area. In 1933 she graduated from Lincoln High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On Dec. 11, 1942, she married Harlan R. Wiggins in Papillion. In 1947 they moved to Minden. She worked for many years as deputy county clerk of Kearney County. Her husband died Dec. 25, 1973.

She was a 50-year member of United Methodist Church. She was a member of University of Nebraska Alumni Association, Minden American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Association and Town and Country Extension Club. She was co-organizer of the Minden Chapter of Jobs Daughters, co-founder of the Minden Campfire Girls, past president of the Alpha Phi Mother's Club, and member and past president of the Minden Garden Club. She was a member of Alpha Phi while attending UNL.

Survivors are three daughters, Patti Luebbe of Columbus, Sherri Friedman of Atlanta and Leslie Hogan of Grand Island; one sister, Pat Cypher of Lincoln; one brother, Bob of Omaha; and seven grandchildren.

Leota M. Lee

Monday, May 24, 1999

Former Tribland resident Leota Mary (Gannon) Lee, 82, of Grand Island, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at the Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center of Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Eric Ford officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Thursday. The family will be present 5-7 p.m.

Mrs. Lee was born Sept. 16, 1916, to Albert and Mabel (Florence) Gannon in Giltner. She grew up and attended school in Giltner. She later attended Grand Island Beauty School. On Nov. 10, 1934, she married Leonard Lee in Aurora. She worked at Stockman's Cafe, The Leiderkranz and the Diner Cafe, all in Grand Island. She also worked at the Ordinance Plant for three years. She then worked in the cafe at the Hastings Ordinance Plant before moving back to Grand Island. She retired in 1956. In 1976 she started as a volunteer for the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. Her husband died Jan. 1, 1991.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island and member and past president of the Eagles Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Brownie leader for several years.

Survivors are one daughter, Donna Talich of Hastings; two brothers, Wilbur of Grand Island and Clyde Eugene of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Viola Butler of Aurora and Erma of Central City; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the VA Memorial Wall at the VA Greater Nebraska Health Care System in Grand Island.

Nola M. Craft

Friday, May 14, 1999

Former Trumbull resident Nola M. (Livingston) Craft, 94, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Life Care Center in Cheyenne.

The remains were cremated. Burial will be in Trumbull. Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Craft was born March 28, 1905, to Alonzo and Henrietta Livingston in Trumbull. She worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Herbert Anderson and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings for many years. In 1992 she moved to Cheyenne.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Carolyn Baber of Cheyenne; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Craft.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church.

Daniel D. Pigeon

Wednesday, May 12, 1999

Former Tribland resident Daniel D. Pigeon, 55, of Vista, Calif., died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in Vista.

Memorial services were Friday at San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, Calif. Burial was to be in Mission Cemetery in Oceanside. Accu-Care Cremation Center of Carlsbad, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pigeon was born Nov. 27, 1943, to Louie and Edna (Cable) Pigeon in Hastings. In 1962 he graduated from St. Cecilia Catholic School in Hastings. He worked for HDR Architects. In 1997 he moved to Vista to work as the designing architect for the North County Regional Justice Center. On April 9, 1999, he married Marla Rice in California.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Jill Roberts and Marna Pigeon, both of Dallas; two sons, Jeff of Michigan and Patrick of Dallas; three sisters, Deloris Durham of Fountain Valley, Calif., Linda Nohr of Poway, Calif., and Cindy Bonahoom of Hastings; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1910 Shadow Ridge Road, Vista, CA 92083.

Mychael T. Pickerill

Wednesday, May 19,1999

Mychael Thomas Pickerill, infant son of Grey III and Nichol (Mintzmyer) Pickerill of Lincoln, died Wednesday, May 19,1999, at St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.

Prayer services are 7 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Dale Phillips officiating. Graveside services will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Mychael was born May 19, 1999, in Lincoln.

Survivors are his parents; one brother; three sets of grandparents, including Grey Jr. and Karol Pickerill of Glenvil and Dennis Mintzmyer of Hastings; and four great-grandparents, including Ethel Call of Bladen and Alvey "Tiny" and Berneice Turner of Hastings.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Fern J. Votipka

Thursday, May 20, 1999

Hebron resident Fern Joan (DeWald) Votipka, 74, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at her home.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Sunday and services are 10 a.m. Monday, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron with the Rev. Paul Sheehy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Alexandria. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Votipka was born June 2, 1924, to Ralph O. and Ferne (Cruise) DeWald in Powell. She attended the District 102 rural school in Jefferson County for six years. She and her family then moved to west of Alexandria and she attended the District 6 rural school for two years. In 1941 she graduated from Alexandria High School. She then started working for the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., and later transferred to Chicago. On Sept. 1, 1945, she married Charles Votipka. They lived five miles east of Alexandria, then moved to the Old Mill along the Sandy Creek. In 1947, they purchased a dairy farm southwest of Alexandria. Her husband died Jan. 4 ,1980. She moved to Hebron. She worked in the Hebron School cafeteria until March.

She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria and its Altar Society and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron, where she was principal housekeeper for the last three pastors and took care of the altar linens, flowers and plants. She taught catechism classes for more than 35 years, first at the Alexandria church and later at Hebron. She also was a member of Alexandria American Legion Auxiliary, Nebraska Right to Life, the Birthday Card group and the Senior Diners Card group. She helped with the Thayer County Immunization Clinic, delivered Meals On Wheels and volunteered at the Blue Valley Nursing Home and Care Home. She was principal housekeeper for the last three pastors of Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors are seven daughters, Kathy Retzlaff of Hebron, Mary Jane Votipka of Beatrice, Nancy Bond of Troutdale, Ore., Cynthia Navarro of Columbia, S.C., Pauline Gross of Fort Knox, Ky., JoAnne Fink of Bonduel, Wis., and Rhonda Buckhart of Alexandria; four sons, Tom of Belvidere, David of Tucson, Ariz., Mark of Saudi Arabia and Ben of Columbus, Miss.; three brothers, David DeWald and Mark DeWald, both of Alexandria, and Jean DeWald of Norfolk; three sisters, Pat Hergott of Hebron, Doris Henkel of Tobias and Jane Cords of Lincoln; 27 grandchildren, one stepgrandchild; one great-grandchild; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sons, John and Dan; and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Henry C. Scharff

Friday, May 21, 1999

Red Cloud resident Henry C. Scharff, 100, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Stanley Schieffer officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Red Cloud.

Mr. Scharff was born Jan. 12, 1899, to Carl and Augusta C. (Bandou) Scharff in a dugout near Riverton in Franklin County. He attended the District No. 47 rural school through eighth grade and later attended business college in Hastings. He worked for Baldwin Men's Store in 1920, then moved to Inavale to farm in 1921. He married Louise L'Heureux at Campbell on June 30, 1930. They farmed in the Thompson Creek area south of Campbell and later moved to Webster County to farm. In 1945 they moved near Riverton and farmed there until Henry retired in 1966. They moved to Red Cloud in 1983. They were honored by Gov. Ben Nelson as an Outstanding Older Couple of Nebraska. His wife died Feb. 28, 1997.

He also was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Harrietta G. Jacobson

Friday, May 14, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident Harrietta Grace (Kinsey) Jacobson, 97, died Friday, May 14, 1999, in Belleville, Kan.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with Doyle Copland and Leigh Bledsoe officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jacobson was born Sept. 30, 1901, to Fred and Anna (Rogers) Kinsey near Montrose, Kan. On March 24, 1921, she married Henry Elza Jacobson. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker.

Survivors are two sons, Charles of Mankato and John of Topeka, Kan.; two daughters, Mary Smies of Courtland, Kan., and Sarah Ann Newsome of Moreno Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Agnes Kinsey of Knoxville, Tenn., and Annabelle Keeler of Formoso, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one son, two sisters and one brother.

There will be no flowers or memorials at the request of the deceased.

Loide E. Nelson

Friday, May 14, 1999

Mankato, Kan., resident Loide E. Nelson, 89, died Friday, May 14, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 4:30 p.m. Friday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. The remains were cremated.

Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Ionia, Kan.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 7830 A.F. and A.M. in Mankato.

Survivors are two sons, Craig of Bloomington, Ind., and Keith of Warriors Mark, Pa.

Mildred V. Myers

Tuesday, May 18, 1999

Hastings resident Mildred Vera (Roepke) Myers, 82, of 900 E. B St. No. 200, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Graveside services are 3 p.m. in Highland Cemetery in Bertrand. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Myers was born Sept. 12, 1916, to Henry and Emma (Nutzman) Roepke in Gosper County. On June 22, 1933, she married Floyd H. Myers. Her husband died in 1988. She lived in Holdrege for 55 years before moving to Hastings 1 1/2 years ago.

Survivors are one daughter, Rochelle Rhoades of Hastings; one son, Roger of Hastings; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two infant children, two sisters and four brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
