Roger A. Golden, 70
CASPER, Wyo. - Roger A. Golden, 70, died Aug. 12, 2005, at the Wyoming Medical Center at Casper.
Roger was born at Menominee, Mich., on May 31, 1935.
He moved to Alliance, after WWII with his parents, Gordon and Eleanore Golden. Roger attended St. Agnes Academy where he distinguished himself in high school athletics, setting several state records and lettering all four years in football, basketball and track.
Roger served as Sr. Class President and graduated from St. Agnes in 1954. Upon graduation, Roger enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1954 - 1958.
In 1960, Roger married Linda Coleman from California and they moved to Alliance in August of 1962. Roger worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 45 years - the majority of his years of service as a locomotive engineer.
A mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Alliance.
A rosary and wake will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Elmer E. Taylor, 89
ALLIANCE - Elmer E. Taylor, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Highland Park Care Center.
Elmer was born Aug. 28, 1916, at Center, to Leigh and Rose (Howard) Taylor. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of The American Legion.
On Oct. 3, 1953, Elmer married Iva Mae Zobel at Alliance. She passed away in 1990.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Chaplain Bill Moose officiating.
Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Highland Park Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Vernon Kloefkorn
EDMOND, Okla. - Vernon Kloefkorn, a 1945 graduate of Alliance High School, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005.

Leah M. Hartman, 78
CHADRON - Leah M. Hartman, 78, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Chadron Community Hospital.
She was born Dec. 21, 1926 at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Orville J. and Edith M. (Schlotfeldt) Crabtree. On April 6, 1948, she was married to Bill C. Hartman at Lincoln. They moved to Chadron in 1957.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Grace Episcopal Church at Chadron, with Bishop James Krotz officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Grace Episcopal Church Altar Guild.

Jim Bradley

Leona Berlie, 88
CHADRON - Leona Mae Berlie, 88, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at the Hemingford Community Care Center.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1916, to Charles and Hannah (Olson) Johnson on their farm near Bloomington.
She graduated from Bloomington High School. She was married to Donald David Berlie on Sept. 20, 1940. The couple moved to Alliance where their two daughters Donna and Sharon were born.
The family moved to Chadron in 1946. After working as a bookkeeper for Don during the years he was a bulk agent for Texaco, Leona worked for Ross Transfer and later for the Chadron Community Hospital.
She then worked in the media center at Chadron State College until her retirement.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Chadron United Methodist Church, with Rev. Seth Leipold officiating.

Helen Rowley, 95
ALLIANCE - Helen Rowley, 95, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center.
Helen lived an exceptional life of a true Nebraska pioneer, most of it in the rural Alliance area. She was born Dec. 2, 1909, at Belvidere, Ill., the eldest of seven children born to Henry and Anna (Johanningsmeir) Behm.
In 1913 her father purchased land from the railroad, moving his family by railcar to Alliance arriving just days before the blizzard of 1913 paralyzed the area. Helen's childhood years were spent on this farm.
On March 13, 1928, she was married to Clarence Rowley, and moved to the Rowley family farm where they raised their five children.
A celebration of Helen's life will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Stephen T. Roosa officiating.
Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 515 Emerson Ave., or to Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance.

Ulala Madsen, 75
SENECA - Ulala Fern "Ukie" Madsen, 75, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Alliance.
She was born April 7, 1930, near Seneca to Seth and Fern (Stevensen) Hanna.
Ukie grew up in the Sandhills and graduated from Mullen High School in 1947. She was married to Lawrence Madsen at Valentine on Feb. 11, 1950.
She was a former member of the Does drove, a member of the Sunshine Chapter No. 261 Eastern Star of Thedford, and the United Church of Christ of Seneca.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday, Oct. 21, at the Seneca Auditorium, with Rev. Linda Martin officiating.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.MDT at the Mullen Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the United Christian Church at Seneca. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Janice W. Abbott, 60
ALLIANCE - Janice W. Abbott, 60, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 22, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., to John Henry and Pauline (Marusa) Warren.
Janice married Thomas H. Abbott on Nov. 21, 1964, in Wilmington. To this union three children, Thomas, Matthew and Shannon, were born. Janice and her family moved to Alliance in July 1977.
She was working as a librarian assistant for Alliance High School at the time of her death.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Alliance Berean Church with Pastor Dave Wilson officiating.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the Alliance Berean Church building fund.

Delbert Grothen, 81
ALLIANCE - Delbert Marvin Grothen, 81, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital after an extended illness.
Delbert was born at home on July 1, 1924, in Ottertail County, Minnesota, the oldest child of Olga Dora Marie (Jantzen) and Theodore Grothen. Delbert's early years were spent on the small family dairy farm near the village of Parkers Prairie, Minnesota.
He graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1943. Following graduation he worked for several farmers around Parkers Prairie. In 1944 Delbert enlisted in the Merchant Marine as a radio telegraph operator. After basic training and radio school in Boston he was assigned to a ship and sailed to Gydnia, Poland.
Delbert met the love of his life, Marion Jane Anderson in December 1949, on a blind date. They were married on June 16, 1950 in Arlington Heights, Illinois and made their first home in Burlington.
To this union three children were born. The family was devoted to church life, education, music, family travels around the U.S., and community development activities.
Delbert was known for his knack for fixing and building things. He built the family's home in Alliance, while working full-time evenings and helping with childcare. He spent countless hours maintaining, painting, and fixing property at home, for the church, and for other family members.
At Delbert's request, cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Delbert's life will be held in his memory at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance with inurnment in the St. John's Memorial Columbarium Garden.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be sent to Good Samaritan Health Care Center for their six years of caring and devotion to Delbert and Marion; the Sallows Military Museum; or the High Plains Veterans Cemetery Fund.
