Ervin Mazour

Saturday, May 6, 2000

Former Lawrence resident Ervin Mazour, 74, of Wood River died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at his home.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today and services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River with the Rev. Ray Kosmicki officiating. Private burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Wood River. There is no visitation. Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mazour was born Nov. 1, 1925, to Thomas and Mary (Pavelka) Mazour in Lawrence. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1943. On Jan. 14, 1946, he married Mary Erma Gilsdorf. He farmed in the Lawrence area until 1957 when he and his family moved near Wood River. In 1970 he became partner and farm manager of Thelen Grain Co. in Wood River and moved into Wood River. He served as Wood River mayor and City Council member for 17 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and served on the church board. He was president of the Business Association, Lions Club and co-op board. He served on the board of education, fair board and the Wood River Country Club.

Survivors are his wife; five sons, Thomas of Vienna, Austria, Jim of Sutton, Gary of Omaha, Mike of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Scott of Grand Island; one daughter, Barbara McTavish of Wood River; three sisters, Dorothy Skalka of Deweese, Rose Theis of Hastings and Marilyn Schroer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church, Wood River Rescue Unit or St. Francis Hospice.

Jacob Hefnider

Saturday, May 6, 2000

Hastings resident Jacob Hefnider, 100, of 120 Forest Boulevard died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Wallace F. Huff

Sunday, May 7, 2000

Hastings resident Wallace F. Huff, 84, of 1510 W. Seventh St. died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Huff was born June 9, 1915, to John and Hannah (Albright) Huff in Hall County. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School. On June 7, 1936, he married Wilma Boontjer in Clay Center. He farmed in the Hansen area from 1937-55. From 1955-73 he was custodian for First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. On Jan. 14, 1999, his wife died.

Survivors are one son, Ron of Lafayette, Colo.; one daughter, Marilyn Evans of Guide Rock; one sister, Marie Rider of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Harley.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Doris A. Menke

Wednesday, May 3, 2000

Nelson resident Doris Angeline (Ray) Menke, 80, died, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services were to be 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson with the Rev. Frank Machovec officiating. Burial was to be in the Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Menke was born Jan. 3, 1920, to Arthur M. and Dora A. (White) Ray near Nelson. She attended rural school and graduated from Nelson High School. She then attended one year of Normal Training and taught in rural Nelson schools. During World War II she worked at Dutton-Lainson Co. in Hastings. On Dec. 7, 1945, she married William Menke in Hastings. She was a school cook and clerk of the district court in Nuckolls County for several years. On Dec. 31, 1994, her husband died.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society and past member of the Nelson Good Samaritan Board. She was a charter member of the Nelson VFW Auxiliary and Bloodmobile chairwoman.

Survivors are one daughter, Judy Pickens of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Ron of Converse, Texas, and Robert of Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann; one brother; and three sisters.

Michael L. Berry

Saturday, May 6, 2000

Former Chester resident Michael L. Berry, 20, of Wymore died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in Beatrice.

Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester with the Rev. Paul Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be no viewing. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and 11 a.m. until services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Berry was born Nov. 5, 1979, to Ed and Kathy (Dutton) Berry in Belleville, Kan. He graduated from Chester-Hubbell-Byron High School in 1998. During high school, he worked in the dietary department at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron. He was employed by Bauman Agri Service in Beatrice at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester where he had been active in the youth group.

Survivors are his parents of Chester; three brothers, Jeff of Wymore, Jon of Lincoln and James of Chester; and his grandmother, Bernice Dutton of Chester.

He was preceded in death by three grandparents.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.

Marian E. Asmus

Saturday, May 6, 2000

Hastings resident Marian E. (Mathis) Asmus, 63, of 1620 E. Idlewilde Drive died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln with the Rev. Dr. Solomon Wang officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings, 5-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Asmus was born Jan. 3, 1937, to Albert Winston and Miriam (Harrison) Mathis in Jesup, Wayne County, Ga. She was a cook for Travelers Cafe, Skylane Cafe, Earls Tavern and the Tackroom, all in Lincoln. On Oct. 20, 1985, she married Keith A. Asmus.

She was a member of the Church of God.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Robert Garcia and Richard Garcia, both of Lincoln; one stepson, Randy Asmus of Lincoln; three daughters, Debra M. Swain of Fairfield and Marylee A. Sievers and Margaret E. Sievers, both of Lincoln; four brothers, James, Paul, Wayne and Eddie, all of Georgia; three sisters, Geneva Weaver, Evelyn DeLoach and Grace Middleton, all of Georgia; 16 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family.

Ellamae Yost

Monday, May 1, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Ellamae (Daniels) Johnson Yost, 79, of Lexington died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Memorial services were Thursday at Park Avenue Estates in Lexington and are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Harvard with the Revs. Marvin Coffeey and Jean Samuelson officiating. The remains were donated to the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.

Mrs. Yost was born May 11, 1920, to the Rev. Verne and Ella Daniels in Covert, Kan. She attended schools in Cook and Springfield and graduated from high school in Nelson. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and taught elementary school in Nelson and Harvard. On Oct. 22, 1942, she married Guy A. Johnson. He died in 1944. On Dec. 7, 1947, she married Ernest M. Yost. They farmed near Harvard and she worked at the Harvard State Bank for several years. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Harvard United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a choir member and served on several committees. She also was a member of Chapter L, P.E.O.

Survivors are three daughters, Nancy Klostermeyer of Salina, Kan., Linda Sutton of Lexington ad JoAnne Eurich of Papillion; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Harvard United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Eldon L. Peper

Former Rosemont resident Eldon L. Peper, 74, of Omaha died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Douglas County Hospital Nursing Facility in Omaha.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak and Cutler Funeral Home Westcenter chapel in Omaha. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Omaha with the Rev. Charles Swanson officiating. Graveside services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Church Cemetery in Lawrence with the Rev. Dennis Hunt officiating. Visitation is 1 p.m. for family and 2 p.m. for friends Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Peper was born May 8, 1925, to Edward and Katherine (Wunchell) Peper in Rosemont. He married Donna L. Jones. He was a commission man for Lee Livestock Co.

Survivors are his wife; one sister, Frances Peper of Broken Bow; and one stepgrandchild.

He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Peggy Norris Bridgeford; two brothers; and three sisters.

Memorials may be given in masses or to donor's charity of choice.

Charles 'Ed' Stratton

Plover, Wis., resident Charles "Ed" Stratton, 87, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital hospice care unit in Stevens Point, Wis.

Services are 3 p.m. today at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Stevens Point with the Rev. Graham West officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Stevens Point. Boston Funeral Home of Stevens Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one son; three daughters, including Diane Michel of Hastings; one sister; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Jean I. Austin

Saturday, April 29, 2000

Hastings resident Jean Irene (Gruver) Austin, 76, of 919 E. Ninth St., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Saturday, 1-8 p.m. Sunday with family present from 6-8 p.m. and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Austin was born July 31, 1923, to Clarke A. and Lena Mae (Scott) Gruver in Troy, N.Y. She graduated from high school in Kirwin, Kan., and earned a degree from West Virginia Business College in Bluefield, W.Va. She was a secretary for the U.S. Army Air Force in Wichita, Kan. On March 25, 1944, she married Delbert W. Austin in Oklahoma City. She was a professional seamstress and a bookkeeper for Fleming Manufacturing Co. in Hastings for 26 years.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hastings.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Larry A. of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ronald L. of Phillipsburg, Kan.; two daughters, Judith A. Lienemann of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Sharon J. Wisker Disciascio of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Monna K. Parsons and Wava N. Gruver, both of Wichita; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.

Dean R. Erickson

Wednesday, May 3, 2000

Former Ong resident Dean R. Erickson, 72, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Memorial services are 7 p.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Revs. Gretchen Diers and Doug Stensby officiating. Burial will be private with the family. There is no visitation. Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Erickson was born Jan. 21, 1928, to Earnest and Ebba (Roos) Erickson in Ong. On Nov. 4, 1951, he married Naomi J. Fuerstenau. He worked for Overland National Bank in Grand Island for 23 years and also was a financial adviser. He worked at Chief Industries and the Pony Express, both in Grand Island.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and served on the church council and several committees. He served on the YMCA board of directors and the board of education and two terms on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Tom of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Tim of Greenwood, Mo.; one daughter, Jane Davis of Hastings; one sister, Marvelle Laursen of Grand Island; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Adam Scheideman

Thursday, May 4, 2000

Hastings resident Adam Scheideman, 84, of 127 E. South St., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Scheideman was born March 11, 1916, to Conrad and Elizabeth (Alberts) Scheideman in Hastings. He married Daphne Wind. She died April 26, 1950. On Aug. 27, 1952, he married Mary B. (Armstrong) Johnson. He worked in security for the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings. He later worked for Spitz Foundry in Hastings for 40 years.

He was a member of the Eagles Club No. 592 and a past member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, D'Maris Brooks and Geneen Zimmerman, both of Hastings; two sons, Richard Scheideman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Larry Johnson of Logan, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Adam; one brother; and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
