Alma E. Jacobitz

Friday, May 19, 2000

Kenesaw resident Alma E. (Lambrecht) Jacobitz, 90, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Paul Duffy officiating. Burial will be at Wanda Zion Cemetery north of Holstein. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Jacobitz was born Feb. 24, 1910, to August and Ottilie (Redman) Lambrecht in Kenesaw. She attended a county school district for eight years. On Oct. 27, 1935, she married Gus A. Jacobitz in Kenesaw. They farmed south of Kenesaw until 1950 when they moved into Kenesaw. On Aug. 6, 1974, her husband died.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Kenesaw Senior Citizen St. Paul Quilters Group.

Survivors are two daughters, Marilyn Dittrick of Kenesaw and Ellen Epp of Kearney; two sons, Gary and Loren, both of Kenesaw; one brother, Otto of Kenesaw; 12 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Richard W. Fleischer

Saturday, May 20, 2000

Webster City, Iowa, resident Richard Wayne Fleischer, 80, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City.

Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Webster City with the Rev. Travis Schmidt officiating. Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Fort Dodge, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are one daughter, Rhonda Fleischer of Hastings; one son; and two grandchildren.

Orlu A. Steyer

Saturday, May 20, 2000

Former Hastings resident Orlu A. (Kime) Steyer, 94, of Salina, Kan., died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Salina Regional Health Center &emdash; Santa Fe in Salina.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belmont Christian Church in Salina with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Patience officiating. The remains will be cremated. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home in Salina and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Steyer was born Dec. 4, 1905, to James and Alice (McIntire) Kime in Unadilla. She married Lloyd F. Steyer. From 1924-26 she was a teacher in Cook. She and her husband owned and operated Pastry Shop in Hastings and Dairy Mart in Loveland, Colo. She moved from Fort Collins, Colo., to Salina 11 years ago. In 1995 her husband died.

She was a member of the Belmont Christian Church and Christian Women's Fellowship in Salina.

Survivors are one son, Glen of Salina; one daughter, Louann Joyce of Clinton, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or Colorado Christian Home, 2950 Tennyson St., Denver, CO 80212-3029.

Duane F. Johnson

Friday, May 19, 2000

Shickley resident Duane F. Johnson, 88, died Friday, May 19, 2000, in Geneva.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Shickley with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. The remains will be cremated. Private burial will be at a later date in the Shickley Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Johnson was born May 16, 1912, to Rudolph and Myrtle (Hulquist) Johnson in Wilcox. He married Ethel Wight.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Holly Johnson of Columbus, Carol Mischke of Austin, Texas, and Kay Johnson of Minneapolis; two brothers, Lemoine of Shickley and Roger of Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Mary E. Madison

Friday, May 19, 2000

Former area resident Mary Elizabeth (Kempf) Madison, 99, of Mount Angel, Ore., died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Towers Health Center in Mount Angel.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Olive Hill Cemetery in rural Superior with the Rev. James Brackett officiating. Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Madison was born Oct. 11, 1900, to Frank and Emma Kempf in Norcatur, Kan. On Sept. 10, 1918, she married Leo Madison. They lived in Superior and then Jewell County, Kan. They also lived in California and Washington before retiring to Silverton, Ore. They later moved to Mount Angel. On May 12, 1995, her husband died.

She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors are one son, Richard of Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Wilda Madison of Los Angeles; one sister, Elma of Flagler, Colo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother.

Neal J. Baughman

Sunday, May 7, 2000

Former Hastings resident Neal J. Baughman, 84, of Filer, Idaho, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Services were May 11 at the Buhl Church of the Nazarene in Buhl, Idaho. Burial was in the West End Cemetery in Buhl. Farmer Funeral Home Chapel in Buhl was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baughman was born April 11, 1916, to Burt and Cora (Brown) Baughman in Chanute, Kan. He attended Deep Creek School in Buhl until eighth grade. He married Ada Johnson and they farmed in the Buhl area for several years. He married Lucile Weber on June 4, 1952. He farmed most of his life. He lived in Hastings for 20 years. After retirement, he was a ditch rider in Buhl.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Frank Weber of Cairo; three daughters, Donna Lemmons of Hagerman, Idaho, Joan Priebe of Wendell, Idaho, and Jolene Holmes of Topeka, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie; and two brothers.

Lorraine Woll

Hastings resident Lorraine Woll, 83, of 730 Webster Ave. died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Dallas B. Pfeil

Thursday, May 18, 2000

Doniphan resident Dallas B. Pfeil, 71, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan with the Rev. Kenneth McClain officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mr. Pfeil was born Oct. 3, 1928, to Clarence and Nellie (Sparks) Pfeil in Doniphan. He grew up and attended school in the McCook and Alma areas. From 1949-52 he served in the U.S. Army 2nd Signal Corps in the 2nd Division during the Korean War. He returned to Nebraska. On April 12, 1953, he married H. Joan Hendrickson in Grand Island. They lived in Doniphan. He worked in maintenance for the Weyerhauser Paper Packaging Co. in Hastings for 20 years and then with Chief Industries in Grand Island. He retired in 1992. His wife died in 1997.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two sons, Richard of St. Paul and Donald of Moore, Okla.; one daughter, Linda Fisher of Sheridan, Wyo.; one brother, Robert of Alma; one sister, Virginia Chipperfield of Alma; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Timothy D.; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church's Little Miracles Day Care Center.

Willis C. Wescoat

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

Former Riverton resident Willis C. Wescoat, 73, of Lexington died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Lexington with the Rev. David Weller officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home chapel in Lexington.

Mr. Wescoat was born Oct. 27, 1926, to Charlie and Gladys (Kugler) Wescoat in Riverton. On Jan. 17, 1957, he married Eileen Schumm in Alma. They moved to Lexington in 1958. He farmed for Charlton Stuart and worked for Ed Fasse in Cozad. He also worked at several area haymills and retired from Monroe's in 1992. After retirement, he did yard work in the Lexington area.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Patrick and Michael, both of Lexington; four daughters, Maxine Vieth of Grand Island, Pam Wescoat of Lexington, Ruth Bohlen of Stockton, Ill., and Amy Tallon of Lincoln; one brother, Alvin of Lexington; one sister, Ethel Farrens of Smith Center, Kan.; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, William.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Valdon 'Pete' Keeler

Wednesday, May 17, 2000

Davenport resident Valdon "Pete" Keeler, 54, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, in Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport City Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport.

Mr. Keeler was born Jan. 12, 1946, to Lowell E. and Arlene (Avers) Keeler in rural Davenport. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1964 and worked as a farmer and truck driver. On April 3, 1999, he married Teresa Wessels in Davenport.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Brandon and Michael, both of Lincoln; one stepson, Justin Gunn of Edgar; one daughter, Kelly Martin of Deshler; one stepdaughter, Niki Wessels of Blue Hill; his mother and stepfather, Arlene and Dean Seifert of Clyde, Kan.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Danon "Danny"; his father; and one brother.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family, 108 W. Seventh St., Davenport, NE 68335.

William L. Steadman

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

Campbell resident William L. Steadman, 69, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military rites conducted by the North Platte Honor Guard. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Merten-Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill.

Mr. Steadman was born May 7, 1931, to Alvin C. and Ora A. (Kennedy) Steadman in Orleans. He graduated from Orleans High School. From 1952-54 he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved from Lexington to Clay Center in 1980 where he owned and operated the Twin Oaks Motel. In 1991 he moved to Inavale and then to Campbell in April.

He was a member of the Clay Center VFW.

Survivors are three sons, Michael of Auburn, Bryan of New Town, Pa., and Rick of Denver; two brothers, Jim of Overland Park, Kan., and Tracey of Denver; four sisters, Shirley Wolzen of Grand Island, Levena Jackson of Happy, Texas, Marilyn Bashford of Manhattan, Kan., and Jackie Muir of Naponee; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials have been established.

W. James 'Jim' Turpit

Former Hastings resident W. James "Jim" Turpit, 85, of Corona del Mar, Calif., died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home.

Services were May 5 at St. Matthew's Traditional Episcopal Church in Newport Beach, Calif. Pacific View Mortuary of Corona del Mar was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Turpit was born Oct. 2, 1914, to Roy and Ella Turpit in Nebraska. He was raised in Hastings. He received degrees from Duke University and the University of Nebraska School of Law. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a first lieutenant. He was a pilot in the Aleutian Islands. He and his wife, Barbara, settled in Whittier, Calif., in 1946. He practiced law in Whittier, first with Edward Guirado and then with his firm, Turpit, Thompson and Miller. He was a retired Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. He and his wife moved to Corona del Mar in 1988. His wife preceded him in death.

He was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, where he was a vestryman; Whittier Masonic Lodge; Pasadena Scottish Rite; Al Malaikah Shrine Club; San Gabriel Conclave and other Masonic organizations. He was past president of Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, Whittier Rotary Club and Whittier Bar Association. He also was past commander of American Legion Service Clubs Post 548.

Survivors are two daughters, Lorrie Smith of Corona del Mar and Elizabeth Reynolds of New York City; two sons, John of Coronado, Calif., and Bill of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Church or to Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, 7056 S. Washington Ave., Whittier, CA 90602.

Carl F. Stromer

Saturday, May 13, 2000

Glenvil resident Carl F. Stromer, 77, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Stromer was born Aug. 4, 1922, to Wilke and Gebke (Enninga) Stromer in Clay County. On June 25, 1950, he married Darlene A. Utecht in Hastings. He worked for Western Land Roller in Hastings and in sales at McClelland-Rose Cars in Hastings. He owned and operated the City Cafe in Glenvil.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Daniel of Pawnee City, Dean of Glenvil and Gary of Hastings; one sister, Hilda Sanders of Seward; one brother, Reemt of Glenvil; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church or Glenvil Fire and Rescue Unit.
