Karen 'Jill' Ricketts

Sunday, March 26, 2000

Hastings resident Karen "Jill" (Kunkel) Ricketts, 63, of 1401 Pershing Road died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Ricketts was born Jan. 10, 1937, to Herbert and Dorthea (Rassmussen) Kunkel in North Platte. She graduated from North Platte High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On June 9, 1957, she married Bud Ricketts. They moved to Hastings in 1968 where she was a real estate agent for Century 21.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Hastings Symphony Orchestra. She also won several Realtor awards and was Realtor of the Year in 1999.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Jeff of Lincoln; two daughters, Crystal Ricketts of Cincinnati and Cyndy Ricketts of Lincoln; her mother of Texas; three sisters, Jolene Gartrell of Texas, Gaye Gartrell of Arizona and Cheryl Struve of Lincoln; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Delbert 'Deb' A. Reichstein

Saturday, March 25, 2000

Former area resident Delbert "Deb" A. Reichstein, 83, of Gothenburg died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. David Fowler officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Blase Memorial Funeral Home chapel in Gothenburg.

Mr. Reichstein was born Sept. 9, 1916, to William C. and Florence Adelia (Emigh) Reichstein in Campbell. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1933. In 1934 he moved with his family to Blue Hill where he and his father operated the Flour Mill. He worked for the Blue Hill Leader as a linotype operator and printer from 1937-48. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. military with the 195th Field Artillery in the European Theater during World War II. On June 22, 1947, he married Josephine Zimmerman in Blue Hill. From 1946-56 he was the printer-operator at Commercial Advertiser in Red Cloud. He also was the linotype operator for the Ord Quiz in Ord for several months in 1948. From 1956-80 he was the printer-operator at the Gothenburg Times. After his retirement, he was a funeral assistant at McVay Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Gothenburg Post No. 64, Disabled American Veterans in North Platte, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5132 in Gothenburg, Cancer Support Group, Diabetic Group and the Gothenburg Senior Center and its Pool League.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Debra Minary of Louisville, Colo.; one son, Tom of Yacolt, Wash.; one sister, Evelyn Hamer of Longview, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or Gothenburg Senior Center.

Ivan C. Birky

Friday, March 24, 2000

Strang resident Ivan C. Birky, 80, died Friday, March 24, 2000, in Grand Island.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Mennonite Church in Shickley with the Rev. Wilton Detweiler officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery at Shickley. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Birky was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Jacob and Alma (Eichelberg) Birky in Hopedale, Ill.

Survivors are his wife, Roine of Geneva; a son, James of Strang; two daughters, Imogene "Genie" Tirrel of Mitchell and Donna Imhoff of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Lester of Wyaconda, Mo., and Clayton of Alaska; three sisters, Viola Martin of Delavan, Ill., Berneice Naffziger of Atlanta, Ill., Janice Martin of Granger, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Glenn H. Klein

Thursday, March 23, 2000

Former Roseland resident Glenn Herman Klein, 85, of Lakeview, Ark., died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Arkansas.

Memorial services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Baptist Church in Lakeview with the Rev. Mark Norris officiating. Burial will be private. Baxter County Funeral Home in Mountain Home, Ark., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Klein was born March 27, 1914, to Peter and Lena Klein in Roseland. On Dec. 22, 1985, he married Barbara Kral in Mountain Home. He moved from Rockford, Ill., to Lakeview in 1976. He was a retired supervisor for an aluminum factory and a building contractor.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge of Mountain Home.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Charles of Rockford; three daughters, Sharon Holloway of California, and Doris Klein and Patty Oliveri, both of Rockford; two brothers, Orville of Kenesaw and Calvin of Grand Island; three sisters, Goldae Whiting and Hazel Manske, both of Hastings, and Lyla Schnase of Del Rio, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church building fund or the charity of the donor's choice.

Raymond A. Reiners

Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999

Hastings resident Raymond A. Reiners, 84, of 231 E. Third St., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Wanda Zion Lutheran Church in Juniata with the Rev. Harold King officiating. Burial with military rites by local veterans organizations will be at Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8-11 a.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home with family present 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Reiners was born April 10, 1915, to Jacob and Rosina (Frese) Reiners in Juniata. He attended rural schools and graduated in 1933 from Hastings Senior High School. He farmed with his parents until World War II. He served in the U.S. Army with the 90th Infantry Division and landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. On March 23, 1946, he married Elaine Morrill. He worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings for 21 years. He later worked at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha for 11 years and retired in 1978. He then returned to Hastings.

He was a member of the Wanda Zion Lutheran Church, the 90th Division Association, Adams County Genealogical Society, Adams County Historical Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Nebraskaland Treasure Hunters.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Barbara Holsten of Hastings; one son, Donald of Omaha; one brother, Duane of Hastings; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael; two sisters; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Norma A. Smidt

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999

Hastings resident Norma A. (Simnit) Smidt, 76, of 904 Jefferson Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Private family graveside services were Nov. 5 at Parkview Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smidt was born Dec. 23, 1922, to Ralph E. and Grace (Parks) Simnit in Barnes, Kan. She married Roy Fox who later preceded her in death. She was a Hastings Regional Center aide.

Survivors are one daughter, Donna Gartner of Hastings; one son, Richard Fox of Juniata; one sister, Vivian Shriber of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Ralph "Bud" Simnit of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Velma L. Walker

Monday, Nov. 8, 1999

Smith Center, Kan., resident Velma L. (McElderry) Walker, 87, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Kansas.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Simmons Mortuary chapel in Kensington, Kan., with the Rev. Willis Walker officiating. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery in Kensington. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Mrs. Walker was born Aug. 15, 1912, to James M. and Anna Marie (Leseberg) McElderry in Smith County, Kan. She married Dale Walker.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and the National Retired Teacher's Association.

Survivors are her husband; and three sisters, Wilma Schenk of Kensington and Marjorie Deichert and Marilyn Bertholf, both of Smith Center.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care or the American Diabetes Association.

Albert J. Nejezchleb

Monday, Nov. 8, 1999

Fairfield resident Albert Joseph Nejezchleb, 88, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Rosary is 10:30 a.m. and services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Deweese with the Revs. Dennis Hunt and Mark Wenzinger officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin's Cemetery near Deweese. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nejezchleb was born Jan. 18, 1911, to Frank Jr. and Millie (Skalka) Nejezchleb in Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School and earned his teaching degree from Hastings College. He taught at rural schools in Clay County for 11 years. On Oct. 28, 1941, he married Mary Alice Wenzinger at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence. He farmed most of his life in the Spring Ranch area. He also patented the easy shift tractor and gate tabs for irrigation. He received his pilot's license at age 60.

He was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Church and the Knights of Columbus in Lawrence.

Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Carol Sheets of Hastings, Kay Konz of Denver and Deb Friend and Kathy Nejezchleb, both of Omaha; two sons, Lynn of Alexandria, Va., and Allen of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or to the family.

O. Loren Churchill

Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999

Former Bloomington resident Orville Loren Churchill, 66, of Kearney died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Bloomington. Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Churchill was born April 19, 1933, to Arthur Orville and Mary Eleanor (Brown) Churchill in Phillips County, Kan., south of Naponee. He attended Bloomington public schools and lived in Bloomington for a time. He married Peggy Blank, and they later divorced. After Bloomington, he lived in Odessa and then Kearney.

Survivors are one daughter, Koren Johnson of Las Vegas; one son, Vernon of Texas; four sisters, Vennette McCain of Funk, Fayenne Howell of West Plains, Mo., Jonquil Volk of Bloomington and Sharon Greenwood of Superior; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter and one sister.

Ralph Sturgeon

Sept. 24, 1999

Former Superior resident Ralph Sturgeon, 77, of Sunnyvale, Calif., died Sept. 24, 1999, in Santa Clara, Calif.

Services were private. The remains were cremated. Lima Family Sunnyvale Mortuary of Sunnyvale, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sturgeon was born March 19, 1922, to Grover Roy and Maggie (McMillan) Sturgeon in Superior. He married Dorothy Ellis. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He served during World War II on the aircraft carrier the Lexington. He retired from Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, Calif.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Theresa Kitely of Hillsboro, Ore.; one son, Jan of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; one sister, Mary Louise Schiermeyer of Hastings; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Parkinson's Disease Association.

Ann Pickett Waymack

Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999

Former Hastings resident Ann (Eshelman) Pickett Waymack, 87, of Union, Wash., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Mason General Hospital in Shelton, Wash.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Nov. 12 at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege. Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery. The remains were cremated. McComb Funeral Home of Shelton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Waymack was born May 16, 1912, to Bert and Louisa (Delimont) Eshelman in Stamford. She was a graduate of Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Hastings. She worked as a registered nurse. In 1934 she married James W. Pickett. They lived in Hastings until 1972 when they moved to Johnson Lake near Lexington. In 1982 her husband died. She married Edward Waymack in 1991. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She was a member of the MLMH School of Nursing alumni organization, Shelton (Wash.) Presbyterian Church, the Alderbrook Golf Club and Chapter GQ, P.E.O.

Survivors are two daughters, Mary Penney of Shelton, Wash.; and Marcia Remington of Holdrege; one stepson, Jeff Waymack of Seattle; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Chapel of The Lake.

Jason Poole

Monday, Nov. 1, 1999

Superior resident Jason Poole, 16, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Superior with the Revs. Connie Raess and Mark Diehl officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Jason was born May 4, 1983, to Craig and Sherri (Blackstone) Poole in Superior. He was a sophomore at Superior High School and active in FFA.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian/Methodist Youth Fellowship. He also was a youth member on the Wildcat Refuge board.

Survivors are his parents of Superior; two brothers, Ryan and Austin of Superior; his grandparents, Bonnie Poole and Rex and Doris Blackstone, all of Superior; and his great-grandmother, Mildred Blackstone of Superior.

He was preceded in death by one grandfather.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.
