R. Cedric Anderson

Friday, Sept. 3, 1999

Hastings resident R. Cedric Anderson, 94, of 748 Circle A, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home with the Rev. Keith Brozek officiating. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Village All Saints Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Swede Home Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson was born June 1, 1905, to Carl A. and Olga (Monteen) Anderson in Wausa. He earned a bachelor's degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., in 1928. On Dec. 27, 1928, he married Ruby Peterson in Swede Home. He received his bachelor's degree in music from Vandercook School of Music in 1933. From 1930-47 he was the director of bands and orchestra in North Platte and directed the North Platte Municipal Band. In 1940, he received his master's from the University of Michigan. While in Nebraska, he was a faculty member at the Gunnison State College summer music camp in Colorado for 13 years. In 1947 he became director at Roosevelt Junior and Senior High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until he retired in 1970. He also co-directed the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. After he retired, he moved to Hastings where he played trombone in the Hastings Symphony Orchestra, Hastings Community Band, the brass ensemble at First United Methodist Church and the Golden Age Entertainers of Good Samaritan Village where he was assistant director and manager. He was guest conductor, judge and adjudicator and festivals, district and state music and marching band contests in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota and Wyoming. On May 17, 1996, his wife died.

He was a member, president and 1979 Hall of Fame inductee of the Nebraska Music Educator's Association. He founded and published the "Nebraska Music Educator's Bulletin." He served as the Nebraska representative on the executive board of National Region IX in 1945. In Cedar Rapids, he was the editor of the "Iowa Music Educator's Bulletin," and president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association. In 1955, he was selected by the "School Musician" as one of the 10 most outstanding music directors of the year. In 1953, he became a charter member of the American School Band Director's Association, serving his first two years as secretary, and a member of the Cedar Rapids Band Commission. He also served for 19 years as director of the Iowa Future Farmers of America Band and six years as director of the National FFA Band at the annual convention. He was mayor of Good Samaritan Village from 1977-85 and a member of the Administrative Cabinet for 10 years. He was a member of the Site Council for Congregate Meals, the Ushers Committee at All Saints Chapel and the Hastings unit of Nebraska Retired Teachers Association in which he served as president. He was recognized for outstanding service to the community by the American Association of Retired Persons and a Service to Mankind Award from the Hastings Noon Sertoma Club.

Survivors are four daughters, Shirley Warren of Rochester, N.Y., Hjordis Tourian of Durham, N.C., Kristin Robinson of Mesa, Ariz., and Ingrid Kessler of Nashville, Tenn.; one son, the Rev. Richmond of Kansas City, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the organ fund at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home.

Harry D. Kazebeer

Monday, Sept. 6, 1999

Services for Hastings resident Harry D. "Kasey" Kazebeer, 94, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, who died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion, are 11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Walter Bye officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Harry O. Pritchard

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999

Former Hastings resident Harry O. Pritchard, 81, of Maysville, Mo., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the Healthcare Center in Maysville.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Tom Murray officiating. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pritchard was born May 6, 1918, to Otto O. and Alda M. (Cogdill) Pritchard in Maysville. He married Elisabeth Hoefer. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941-64. In 1978 he moved to Hastings where he worked as a custodian at Hastings Public Schools. His wife died Jan. 28, 1992.

He was a member of the Baptist Church in Hastings and the VFW.

Survivors are one sister, Beulah May Clayton of Pacifica, Calif.; and one brother, Lee of Maysville.

He also was preceded in death by one brother.

Steven K. Herboldsheimer

Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999

Inavale resident Steven K. Herboldsheimer, 45, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Potter Cemetery at Potter. Memorial services are 3 p.m. Sunday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sidney with the Rev. Douglas Birky officiating. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings and Holechek Funeral Home of Potter are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Herboldsheimer was born Nov. 19, 1953, to Bennie and Charlyn (Hageimester) Herboldsheimer at Sidney.

Survivors are one daughter, Heide Herboldsheimer of Sterling, Colo.; one son, Daniel of Sterling; his parents of Potter; and three sisters, Alicia Eagan of Arapaho, Okla., Patrice Egging of Pratt, Kan., and Susan Kruse of Auburn.

Dorothy M. Stehman

Friday, Sept. 3, 1999

Former Hildreth resident Dorothy M. Stehman, 73, of Axtell, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at the Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell with the Rev. Helmut Yurk officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.

Miss Stehman was born April 4, 1926, to Bernard and Bertha (Slack) Stehman at Beatrice. She moved to Hildreth at an early age and attended the Hildreth Public Schools. She moved to Minden when she was 14 years old. She worked in Holdrege and later worked and lived at Bethphage Mission in Axtell.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Otto A. Quaife

Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999

Hastings resident the Rev. Otto A. Quaife, 96, of The Kensington, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. There is no visitation. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

The Rev. Quaife was born Dec. 10, 1902, to Stanton A. and Clara M. (Goodrich) Quaife at Robinson, Kan. He married Vida Lowder. He served for 44 years as a United Methodist minister of the Nebraska Conference. His wife died Jan. 5, 1997.

Survivors are one daughter, Merna Greer of Beatrice; one son, Dr. Merton of Omaha; one sister, Emma Henderson of Loveland, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church.

Donald F. Adam

Friday, Sept. 3, 1999

Hildreth resident Donald F. Adam, 73, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Ronald Ebb officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mr. Adam was born May 11, 1926, to Herman and Ella (Frerichs) Adam in Macon. He grew up in the Macon area. He attended School District No. 25 and Macon District No. 9. He then farmed with his father. On Oct. 14, 1945, he married Mildred Stuehm in Hildreth. In 1946 he was drafted into the U.S. Armed Forces and served in Korea. He also had military police training and worked in the motor pool as a mechanic. He returned to the Hildreth area in 1947 where he farmed for one year northwest of town. He and his wife moved to the Macon area in 1949. In 1971 they moved to a farm west of Hildreth. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He also was a member of the VFW in Hildreth. He served on the Wilcox Co-op board.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Ronald of Ada, Okla., and Douglas of Lakewood, Colo.; one daughter, Beverly Meyer of Red Cloud; one brother, Harold of Franklin; three sisters, Myrna Van Camp of Loveland, Colo., Caroline Badsteen of Grand Island and Marietta Blank of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Loschen; one brother; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or Bethany Home.

Winona C. Hoppens

Hastings resident Winona C. Hoppens, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are pending with Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home of Harvard.

Frederick H. Wright

Friday, Sept. 24, 1999

Hastings resident Frederick H. Wright, 83, of 2200 E. 12th St. died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Tom Murray officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Wright was born Sept. 23, 1916, to Herbert W. and Elsie M. (Morse) Wright in Beatrice. On Oct. 15, 1943, he married Barbara Fuller in Lincoln. That same year he moved to Hastings. He and his wife have been owners of the Art and Frame Shop in Hastings since 1979.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Karen Zwiener of Klamath Falls, Ore.; three sons, Charles of Denver, Rex of Omaha and Steve of Portland, Ore.; five sisters, Margaret Rawmaker of Hawthorne, Calif., Sarah Rhone of Oakland, Calif., Dorothy Breunbach, Shirley Nelson and Frances Smith, all of Lincoln; one brother, Paul of Wickenburg, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Lyle B. Erington

Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999

Hebron resident Lyle B. Erington, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Hebron with the Rev. John R. Walton officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hebron. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday and 9-11 a.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mr. Erington was born April 18, 1917, to Bryant and Stella (Dinnel) Erington at Purdum. He was a farmer and lived at Burwell, Lyman, Scottsbluff, Morrill and Hebron and Torrington and Lance Creek in Wyoming. On May 22, 1954, he married Mary Fowlkes in Douglas, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Survivors are one daughter, Evelyn Jenkins of Doniphan; three sons, David of Hebron, Douglas and John, both of Doniphan; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

John L. Shaw

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999

Holstein resident John L. Shaw, 99, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Holstein with the Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Shaw was born Dec. 17, 1899, to Luscion and Margaret (Seaman) Shaw on the family homestead southwest of Roseland. On Aug. 10, 1926, he married Fern Gangwish in Hastings. He owned and operated Shaw's Land Leveling.

He attended Grace United Methodist Church. He also served on the Adams County Board of Supervisors for eight years.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Pat Shineman of Independence, Mo., Donna Skiver of San Antonio and Sandy Plambeck of Holstein; one son, Harold of Holstein; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marguerite Saylor; two sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Twila M. Wileman

Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999

Hastings resident Twila M. Wileman, 82, of Good Samaritan Village, Perkins Manor, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Perkins Manor.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Lewis W. Kiker Jr.

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999

Former Hildreth resident Lewis W. Kiker Jr., 71, of Kearney, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kearney with the Revs. Janet Sturgis and Bob Park officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 8:30 a.m. until services Friday at the church. Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kiker was born May 13, 1928, to Lewis and Mary (Smylie) Kiker in Hale County, Texas. He graduated from Plainview High School in Texas and later attended Texas A&M and Texas Tech. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe. In 1957 he married Elizabeth "Betty" Bawden. They moved to Holdrege in 1964 and to Hildreth in 1974. He farmed in the Axtell area. In 1980, his wife died. He moved to Kearney in 1985.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Survivors are one son, Mikel of Kearney; one daughter, Sue Kiker of Rapid City, S.D.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.
