Hastings resident Carolyne L. Williams, 84, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Villa Grace.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Keith L. Hansen

Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000

Hastings resident Keith LaMoyne Hansen, 73, of 611 S. Colorado Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. John Lee Ross officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family present 7-9 p.m. and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hansen was born Nov. 5, 1926, to Raymond and Frances "Veryl" (McCombs) Hansen in Bloomington. He attended school in Minden and graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Jan. 25, 1950, he married Ruth "Carol" Kelley in Bentonville, Ark. They lived in Missouri, Texas and New Mexico before moving to Hastings in 1963. He worked in road construction for several years and then at Werner Construction in Hastings for 34 years.

He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and the VFW in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, David of Charleston, S.C., and Kevin of Blue Hill; two daughters, Pamela Sawicki of Hastings and Patricia Johnson of East Troy, Wis.; his mother of Hastings; one sister, Jacqueline Erickson of Hastings; one brother, Neil of Cupertino, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Evart L. Vader

Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000

Mankato, Kan., resident Evart L. Vader, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday with family present from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Mr. Evart was born Oct. 13, 1913, to John Harlow and Ella Belle (Martin) Vader near Lovewell, Kan. He attended rural Jewell County Schools. On May 17, 1947, he married Katherine Proctor in Mankato. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors are one daughter, Linda Wilson of Dodge City, Kan.; three grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Jewell County Hospital Medical Equipment Fund in Mankato.

Kenneth C. Hoffman

Monday, Jan. 17, 2000

Former Harvard resident Kenneth Clyde Hoffman, 72, of Tulsa, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Tulsa.

Services were Thursday at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Tulsa with the Rev. Ray Kretzschmer officiating. Floral Haven Funeral Home of Broken Arrow, Okla., was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hoffman was born Sept. 24, 1927, to Clyde L. and Alma L. (Selko) Hoffman in Harvard. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. From 1946-47 he served in the U.S. Army. He earned his bachelor's degree in medicine in 1950 and doctor of medicine degree in 1952 from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He practiced medicine in Flint, Mich., Kenesaw, Hastings and South Bend, Ind. He then moved to Tulsa in 1978 to practice medicine at St. John's Medical Center Department of Pathology and at the American Red Cross. On Dec. 31, 1982, he married Helen Lee Black.

He was a member of the College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Association of Clinical Scientists, American Medical Association, Oklahoma Medical Association, Tulsa County Medical Society, Oklahoma Pathology Society, Alpha Omega Alpha and the American Association of Blood Banks.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Scott L. of Omaha and Kirk L. of San Diego; two daughters, Kristin Ann Hoffman and Lisa Beth Hoffman, both of Omaha; three stepdaughters, Dorinda Eve Miller of Jennings, Okla., and Janice Elaine Nasworthy and Teresa Lynn Adney, both of Coweta, Okla.; one brother, Paul D. of Shawnee, Kan.; and seven grandchildren.

Heiko Garrelts

Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000

Hastings resident Heiko Garrelts, 93, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Perkins.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mr. Garrelts was born Dec. 21, 1906, to Diedrich B. and Johanna T. (Raske) Garrelts near Fairfield. He attended rural school in Clay County through the eighth grade. On Oct. 28, 1940, he married Fern V. Davis. He worked as a farmer and dairyman in Clay County and Adams County. He served on the rural school boards and the Glenvil Co-op Board. On Nov. 29, 1983, his wife died.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors are on daughter, Delores "Dee" Lammers of Glenvil; one brother, George of Geneva; one sister, Rose Lewis of Hastings; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan; and five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Clarence W. 'Red' Burch

Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000

Fairmont resident Clarence W. "Red" Burch, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva with the Rev. Maynard Kellerman officiating. Burial will be in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery. Visitation began today at the funeral home.

Mr. Burch was born Sept. 16, 1912, to Edward F. and Alvena (Kuhlman) Burch in Belvidere. He attended school through the eighth grade and then went to work for the railroad. He lived in many communities prior to World War II. He then primarily lived in Grand Island. He began with the railroad sweeping railroad cars, was a telegrapher and later worked into office management. He retired to York from Burlington Northwestern Santa Fe Railroad. He moved to McCool Junction and operated Red's Ribbon and Trophy Shop for almost 26 years. He then moved to Fairmont.

He was an active member of the Masons, and was a member of York Lodge No. 56 AF & AM, Meridian Shrine Club, Imperial Council of the Nobles of the Meptic Shrine and the Sesostris Shrine.

Survivors are six sisters, Erma Burch of Geneva, Ethel Nelson and Phyllis Shaffer, both of Omaha, Bertha Ball of Superior, Berniece Helton of Ogallala and Arlene James of Wichita, Kan.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Edward R. Beck

Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000

Mankato, Kan., resident Edward R. Beck, 47, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at his home.

Private family services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with Michael Leaf officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato.

Mr. Beck was born Feb. 26, 1952, to Clarence and Florence (Motes) Beck in Beloit, Kan. He attended schools in Mankato and Cloud County Community Junior College in Concordia, Kan. He worked as a farmer.

Survivors are one son, Brent Edward of Mankato; one daughter, Kristene Marie Beck of Mankato; his parents of Mankato; one sister, Sherry Leaf of Wellington, Kan.; and one grandmother, Louise Motes of Mankato.

Memorials may be given in care of his father. Donations will be determined at a later date.

Lester A. Harris

Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000

Hastings resident Lester A. Harris, 89, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Perkins Pavilion.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Village All Saints Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. There is no visitation. The remains were cremated.

Mr. Harris was born May 31, 1910, to Charles and Rebecca (Blank) Harris on a farm south of Glenvil. He graduated from Fairfield High School. He farmed near Glenvil until moving to GSV in the 1960s.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Village.

Phyllis Lamphear

Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000

Hebron resident Phyllis (Shearer) Lamphear, 69, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Hebron with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial will be in the Hebron City Cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and two hours prior to services Monday at the church.

Mrs. Lamphear was born Nov. 15, 1930, to Everett and Tressa (Folsom) Shearer in Grand Island. On Nov. 3, 1951, she married Lee Lamphear in Colorado Springs, Colo. She worked as a bookkeeper for the city of Hebron.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are her husband; two brothers, Bruce of Kansas City, Mo., and Everett of Bethany, Okla.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Leanne; and one brother.

Memorials have been established to the family's choice.

Louis Kirchhoff

Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000

Superior resident Louis Kirchhoff, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Byron with the Rev. Dave Nordstrom officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery near Byron. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mr. Kirchhoff was born Sept. 1, 1909, to Henry and Sophia (Mangels) Kirchhoff west of Byron. He was raised near Byron and attended Lonestar School. On Aug. 8, 1935, he married Irmgard Hoefer. They farmed east of Hardy and he started the first Grade A dairy in Nuckolls County. In 1968 his wife died. On May 3, 1970, he married Wilma Weber. He later retired from farming. In 1997 he moved to Good Samaritan Center.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Byron Lions Club, and was involved in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Glenn of Hardy and Kermit of Overland Park, Kan.; two stepsons, Ron Weber of Barrow, Alaska, and Paul Weber of Omaha; one daughter, Lorraine Brians of Belton, Texas; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Meyer of Superior and Carla Nielander of Deshler; one sister, Clara Meyer of Loveland, Colo.; seven grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Dwayne; two brothers; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.

Martha R. Tooley
Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000

Hastings resident Martha Rose (Means) Tooley, 95, of 501 S. St. Joseph Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Jeff Clark officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Tooley was born Oct. 12, 1904, to Frank and Lucretia (Davis) Means in Fremont County. On Feb. 16, 1921, she married Floyd Tooley in Sidney, Iowa. She moved to Hastings in 1924 where she worked at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in the laundry department. She retired in the 1970s. In 1975 her husband died.

She was a member of the North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Edith Elnor Higgins of Gardner, Kan., and Mildred Lucretia White of Vidor, Texas; two sons, Ronald Wayne of Milan, Ill., and Jerrold Lee of Taunton, Mass.; one sister, Annie E. Reed of Sidney, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Robert.

Memorials may be given to the North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Vera A. Bentz
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Blue Hill resident Vera A. (McCoy) Foster Bentz, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Blue Hill Care Center.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bentz was born Nov. 6, 1913, to Herbert E. and Zada (Walburn) McCoy in Bladen. She graduated from Blue Hill High School and Hastings Business College. In 1940 she married A.W. Foster. He preceded her in death in 1964. On April 25, 1967, she married H. Harold Bentz Sr. in Smith Center, Kan. He died Oct. 12, 1982.

She was a member of the Blue Hill United Methodist Church, the Methodist Church Dorcas Circle, Eastern Star, PEO, American Legion Auxiliary and RSVP.

Survivors are two stepsons, N. Harold Bentz and T. Woodson Bentz, both of Blue Hill; one brother, Stanley E. of Duncan, Okla.; several stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two stepdaughters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.
