Gordon R. Skiver
Nov. 16, 1999

Former Burr Oak, Kan., resident Gordon Russell Skiver, 85, of Santa Rose, Calif., died Nov. 16, 1999, in Santa Rosa.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Burr Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Melby Mortuary of Mankato, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Skiver was born Jan. 30, 1914, to Eric and Ethel (Johnson) Skiver in Burr Oak. He graduated from Burr Oak High School and Kansas State University with a degree in accounting. He moved to northern California where he worked in the shipyards during World War II. On July 3, 1940, he married Greta Leece. She died March 11, 1994.

Dana B. Bohlke
Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000

Former Hastings resident Dana Boyd Bohlke, 54, of Silverdale, Wash., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Silverdale.

The remains were cremated at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo. Lewis Funeral Chapel in Silverdale was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bohlke was born July 20, 1945, to William Halsey and Ruth Elizabeth (Golgert) Bohlke in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On March 19, 1966, he married Linda Jurgena. He owned and operated the Forest Murmurs Nudist Club in Silverdale and retired in 1993. He also was a maintenance man at the Poplar Motel in Silverdale.

Survivors are his wife; one brother, Jon of Hastings; and one sister, Julie Bohlke of Hastings.

Duane D. Newbold
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Minden resident Duane D. Newbold, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Ronald Ebb officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Gerhard C. Knehans

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000

Hastings resident Gerhard C. Knehans, 89, of 3211 Park Lane Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Webster County. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Knehans was born March 14, 1910, to Henry "Peter" and Caroline (Gerhard) Knehans near Lawrence. On April 13, 1941, he married Lenora Krueger in Blue Hill. He worked as a farmer and cattleman in the Guide Rock area until retiring. He and his wife moved to Hastings in 1975.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church. He was a past member of Just for Fun Car Club and a past board member of the Lawrence Co-op.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Eldon of Durango, Colo., and Gerhard L. and Doug, both of Guide Rock; one daughter, Janice Pollock of Sikeston, Mo.; one brother, Erich of Tracy, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Faith Lutheran Church or the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rosemont.

William 'Bill' G. Hughes

Friday, Feb. 25, 2000

Memorial services for Hastings resident William "Bill" G. Hughes, 74, of 722 W. 33rd St., who died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. There is no viewing, but friends may sign the book at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today and until services Tuesday.

Evelyn L. Riemann

Friday, Feb. 25, 2000

Norton, Kan., resident Evelyn L. (Scott) Riemann, 89, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Norton County Hospital in Kansas.

Wake services are 7 p.m. today at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton with the Rev. John Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation is until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are five sons; one daughter, LaVetta Garrison of Hastings; one brother; one sister; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arthur Buss

Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000

Hastings resident Arthur Buss, 86, of 3300 W. Prairie Lake Road, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Myron J. Mankhey

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000

Smith Center, Kan., resident Myron Jerome Mankhey, 67, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Simmons Mortuary in Smith Center with the Revs. Lance McDowell and Dale McCain officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the mortuary.

Mr. Mankhey was born Nov. 19, 1932, to Roy H. and Edna M. (Jones) Mankhey in Smith Center. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later retired. On May 23, 1958, he married Evelyn Tuxhorn. He retired from the USD 237 School District in Smith Center.

He was a member of the Sonshine Christian Church in Smith Center.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Pamela S. Harrison of Grand Island and Kimberly A. Smith of Smith Center; one son, Rodney S. of Omaha; two sisters, Glenda Arment and JoAnn Reid, both of Smith Center; two brothers, Carrol of Paso Robles, Calif., and Kenneth of Smith Center; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Sonshine Christian Church Children's Department or the Smith County Hospice in Smith Center.

Charlotte A. Hromas

Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000

Kenesaw resident Charlotte Ann (Woodman) Hromas, 63, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the Kenesaw Haven Home.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Hromas was born Oct. 9, 1936, to Floyd Everson and Orpha Elizabeth (Johnson) Woodman in Hastings. She graduated from Kenesaw High School in 1954. On May 3, 1959, she married John "Gene" Hromas in Kenesaw. She worked for Hastings Utilities. In 1972 she started working for the Adams County Bank in Kenesaw. She retired as an assistant cashier in 1989. On Jan. 23, 1997, her husband died. She moved to Haven Home in 1998.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kenesaw and the Methodist Women Group. She also was a member of the Kenesaw Senior Center.

Survivors are one daughter, Ann Fritz of O'Neill; two sons, Brian of Omaha and Greg of Dallas; two sisters, Marcila Fletcher of Fort Worth, Texas; and Darlene Barker of Lincoln; two brothers, Larry of Kenesaw and Dean of Shelton; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Rudolph A. Bartels

Friday, Feb. 25, 2000

Franklin resident Rudolph A. Bartels, 91, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Services were to be 2 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church in Franklin with the Rev. Bruce Crabtree officiating. Burial was to be in the Upland Cemetery. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bartels was born Feb. 12, 1909, to William and Elizabeth (Nitzel) Bartels in Webster County. He attended rural school southwest of Campbell. On Nov. 2, 1933, he married Esther Sinnen at her parents' home northwest of Upland. He retired from farming in the Upland area. He and his wife moved to Upland and lived there for 26 years. They moved to Franklin in 1999.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and served on the Upland school board and the Zion Lutheran Church board in Upland until its closing.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Roger of Minden and Dean of Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, Ardyce Fritson of Franklin and Alyson Morris of Hildreth; one brother, Oscar of Franklin; one stepbrother, Herbert Bartels of Kearney; two stepsisters, Lydia Troester and Erma Jaeger, both of Redwood, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son; two brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Evangeline C. Wilson

Friday, Feb. 25, 2000

Edgar resident Evangeline C. (Horn) Wilson, 95, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Plains in Edgar with the Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson was born Jan. 17, 1905, to Ira and Mary (Riley) Horn in Omaha. She graduated from Harvard High School. On March 17, 1930, she married Ralph Wilson in Kearney. They lived near Fairfield until 1943 when they moved on a farm near Edgar. In 1957 they moved to Edgar. On Oct. 20, 1996, her husband died.

She was a member of the Church of the Plains, Edgar Women's Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter AA P.E.O. and the National Federated Republican Women.

Survivors are one son, Aubrey of Edgar; two daughters, Dolores Wilson of Denver and Lu Loehr of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Edgar Rescue Unit and Emergency Medical Technicians or the Church of the Plains.

Leona E. O'Brien

Friday, Feb. 25, 2000

Former Prosser resident Leona Emma (Riese) O'Brien, 86, of Fredericksburg, Va., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Mary Washington Hospital in Virginia.

Services are 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. Robert A. Koehler officiating. A private burial will follow. Visitation is one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. O'Brien was born Feb. 24, 1914, to John and Emma Riese in Prosser. She lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she worked at the Antlers Hotel in 1942. She married James Russell O'Brien and they moved to New York. She worked in the administrative staff at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. She and her husband later moved to Uniondale, N.Y. In 1958 her husband died. She worked as a hostess in several Long Island restaurants. She retired in 1995 and moved to Fredericksburg.

She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg.

Survivors are one daughter, Frances Kay Coles of Montauk, N.Y.; two sons, James Rusty of Fredericksburg and Ronald Kenneth of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Frieda Nolte of St. Paul, Minn., and Ruth Odle of Meridian, Miss.; two brothers, Raymond of Hastings and Herbert of Colorado Springs; and five grandchildren.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 5120 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

Raymond J. Keeten

Kenesaw resident Raymond J. Keeten, 68, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home.

Services are pending with Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.

Sue A. Scott

Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000

Hastings resident Sue Ann (Crane) Scott, 40, of 600 S. Hastings Ave. died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha following a long illness.

Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Keystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Phillips officiating. West Lawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park Funeral Home-Crematory of Omaha is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scott was born July 30, 1959, to Richard and Cheryl Crane in Lincoln. On June 10, 1994, she married Hiram Scott in Ord.

She attended Keystone Baptist Church.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Angela Sue Scott of Hastings; her parents of Hastings; one sister, Karen Lange of Claremont, Calif.; and one brother, Pete of Scottsbluff.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lora.

Frank H. Janssen

Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000

Former Glenvil resident Frank H. Janssen, 84, of Kenesaw Haven Home died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the home.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church west of Glenvil with Les and Bonnie Larsen officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3-5 p.m. and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mr. Janssen was born Oct. 19, 1915, to Everet and Dora (Ziems) Janssen in Brickton. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-44 during World War II. He served in the European Theater of Operations, was a Prisoner of War and received the Purple Heart. In 1946, he married Berniece Hollister in Kansas. They later divorced. He graduated from vocational technical school in Milford as a machinist. He was a cook at the Hastings Regional Center. He lived in Glenvil for 25 years before moving to Haven Home in 1997.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glenvil, DAV and VFW in Hastings.

Survivors are four sons, David of Cairo; Wes of Loveland, Colo.; Wendell of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Dale of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Marie Green of Hastings; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
