Mary S. Miller

Monday, Dec. 13, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Mary S. (Portz) Miller, 93, of Wahoo, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Saunders County Care Center in Wahoo.

Vigil service is 7 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Lawrence Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery in Campbell with the Rev. James Schrader officiating. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Svoboda Funeral Home of Wahoo is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Miller was born March 14, 1906, to Leo and Anna (Beiriger) Portz in Assumption. She attended Assumption School. On Feb. 15, 1928, she married Bernard Miller in Assumption. They farmed near Campbell until retiring in 1977 and moved to Hastings. On Nov. 1, 1985, her husband died. She moved to Wahoo in 1994. She moved to Saunders County Care Center in September 1997.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. She was a former member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings and St. Ann's Catholic Church in Campbell. She was a member of the Altar Society and the Extension Club in Campbell.

Survivors are two sons, Philip of Wahoo and Larry of Gering; three daughters, Bernadine Anderson of Surfside, S.C., Rita Koehler of Omaha and Alice Witt of Lathrop, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by eight brothers; four sisters; and one grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Ray J. Phelps

Hastings resident Ray J. Phelps died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Vernon L. Hawke

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999

Grand Island resident Vernon L. Hawke, 71, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Skilled Nursing Unit in Grand Island.

Services are pending at Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon.

Russell L. Bailey

Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999

Geneva resident Russell L. Bailey, 68, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Burial will be in the Carleton City Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Bailey was born Feb. 15, 1931, to James and Edith (Wilcox) Bailey in Carleton.

Survivors are his wife, Wilma Faye Bailey; two sons, Steve and Alan, both of Geneva; one sister, Isabelle Swenson; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Masonic Lodge.

Pearl L. McAlister

Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999

Hastings resident Pearl Lois (Baugatz) McAlister, 84, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at Villa Grace.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. John L. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mrs. McAlister was born May 29, 1915, to Fredrick and Martha (Bruns) Baugatz in Cooperstown, N.D. In 1933 she married Bronson La Moure. They divorced in 1941. She married Merritt McAlister. He preceded her in death in 1971. She then moved from Flagstaff, Ariz., to Hastings. She worked at Good Samaritan Village as a caregiver for 15 years until retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and the Good Samaritan Society.

Survivors are one son, Bronson La Moure of Salmon, Idaho; two sisters, Viola Baugatz of Hastings and Alma Baugatz of Los Angeles; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by on daughter, Rita LaMoure, and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or Good Samaritan Village.

Margaret E. Einspahr

Friday, Dec. 10, 1999

Campbell resident Margaret E. (Amaya) Einspahr, 71, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Campbell with the Rev. Bill Caughey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery southwest of Campbell. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Einspahr was born Nov. 20, 1928, to Julian G. and Frieda H. (Schipper) Amaya in Alliance. She graduated in 1946 from North Platte High School. On Jan. 20, 1952, she married Eugene P. Einspahr. They lived in North Platte where she worked for Fairmont Foods. They then moved in 1964 to Lincoln where she volunteered at Park Elementary School. In 1968 they moved to Campbell and bought Gene's Tavern. On Oct. 9, 1989, her husband died.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

Survivors are three sons, Larry of Benkleman, Richard of Elwood and Robert of Roseland; one brother, Norval of California; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Fence Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Rose M. Hall

Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999

Campbell resident Rose M. (Eckhardt) Hall, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Campbell with the Rev. Mark Diehl officiating. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Campbell. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hall was born Oct. 26, 1910, to Conrad and Mary (Kanzler) Eckhardt in Webster County. On March 30, 1928, she married Ralph Hall in Grand Island. They moved to several Nebraska communities before moving to a farm near Campbell in 1943. They later moved into Campbell in 1963. She earned her certified nursing assistant degree and worked for Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell. On Dec. 21, 1982, her husband died.

She was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women. She also was a member of the Extension Club and the Birthday Club.

Survivors are three sons, Donald and Lamoine, both of Campbell, and Melvin of Republican City; two brothers, Walter and Raymond "Bud," both of Holstein; one sister, Helen Meyer of Campbell; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by one brother and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the 911 Center or the Fire Department in Campbell or the donor's choice.

Alyce W. Becker

Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999

Hastings resident Alyce W. "Alice" Becker, 96, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at GSV Perkins Peace Chapel with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Miss Becker was born March 13, 1903, to Wilson J. and Sarah M. (Moorberg) Becker in Seward County. She moved with her parents to a farm in Clay County in 1910. She attended Glenvil Public Schools, graduating from the 10-year school in 1919. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1921. She worked at Farmer's State Bank in Glenvil until it closed 1932. She then worked at the Clay County Treasurer's office in Clay Center. In 1945 she was appointed deputy county treasurer. She retired in 1965. In 1992 she moved to Perkins Pavilion.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Glenvil and was church pianist.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Ella E. Gurney

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999

Hastings resident Ella E. (Hagemeyer) Gurney, 90, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gurney was born July 31, 1909, to Albert and Grace Hagemeyer in Adams County. She married Charles E. Gurney. He preceded her in death in 1970. She worked as a troubleshooter for Jack & Jill Grocery stores.

She attended the Second Presbyterian Church.

Lucille M. Cotner

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Louis J. Vontz

Rosary for Hastings resident Louis J. Vontz, 75, who died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Enola Atenhan

Friday, Dec. 10, 1999

Deshler resident Enola (Rodenburg) Atenhan, 85, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler and two hours prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Atenhan was born May 27, 1914, to Walter and Eva (Rupprecht) Rodenburg in rural Davenport. She graduated from Deshler High School. She then attended Kearney State Teacher's College for one year. She taught at a one-room schoolhouse in Friedensau for three years. She married Ervin Atenhan. He preceded her in death Nov. 15, 1987.

Survivors are one brother, Edgar of Seattle, Wash.; and one sister, Bernice Deepe of Bruning.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Jolene E. Haverkamp

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999

Plainview resident Jolene E. Haverkamp, 38, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh.

Services were to be 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainview with the Rev. James Buckley officiating. Burial was to be at the church cemetery in Plainview. Ashburn Funeral Home of Plainview is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her parents; one sister, Joan Spencer of Hastings; and two brothers.

William C. Frahm

Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999

Blue Hill resident William Clarence Frahm, 64, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frahm was born June 22, 1935, to Clarence and Minnie (Waechter) Frahm near Blue Hill. He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1952. He started working as a mechanic while in high school and later was a tractor mechanic. In 1975 he started his own construction company. On Jan. 17, 1976, he married Lois Reiman. He retired in 1996.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Vicki Jacobson of Rozet, Wyo., Debra Atkins of Des Moines, Iowa, and Heidi Farrall of Trumbull; one stepdaughter, Brenda Myers of Hastings; one sister, Julane Kathman of Hastings; four grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Blue Hill Public Library Building Fund.
