Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999

Hastings resident Lowell D. Korgan of 822 E. Third St., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Helen A. Phelps

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999

Hastings resident Helen Amanda (Lummis) Phelps, 88, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Phelps was born March 2, 1911, to Wesley and Grace (Williams) Lummis near Parks. She graduated from Kearney High School and Kearney State College with her bachelor's degree in business education. She also attended the University of Nebraska, Colorado State College in Gunnison, Colo., Hastings College and the University of Wyoming. She taught at Cozad High School for four years. On June 18, 1937, she married Byron H. Phelps in Valier, Mont. They moved to Montana and then to California, where he was in the lumber business. During World War II, she was a social worker in Santa Rosa, Calif., and served as employee counselor on the Marianna, Fla., Army Air Base. In 1945 she and her husband moved to Hastings. She returned to teaching in 1959 at Roseland, Holstein and Trumbull. She retired in 1977. On Nov. 2, 1987, her husband died.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. During the war, she sponsored USO. She received citations from Gov. Earl Warren for work as a medical field agent in the Selective Services System of the United States and from the President for work in organizing the Fremont School District for registration, first aid, soup kitchen and evacuation in case of attack.

Survivors are two sons, Burke of Smith Center, Kan., and Bruce of Ayr; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcia; one sister; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church or the donor's choice.

Mary E. Wilson

Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999

Former Hastings resident Mary Ellen (Cornelius) Wilson, 68, of Denver died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, in Denver.

Memorial services were Aug. 25 at Horan and McConaty Funeral Home chapel in Denver. The remains were cremated.

Mrs. Wilson was born Jan. 19, 1931, to Dick C. and Margaret K. (Fox) Cornelius in Hastings. She worked in a cafe and as a seamstress. She also worked in a factory making laminated nature pictures. She married Howard C. Wilson in Hastings. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Eagles Club in Hastings and Provo, Utah.

Survivors are six daughters, Katherine Severson and Eva Krueger, both of Deer Park, Wis., Sue Salmon of South Carolina, Avis Byers of Kaukauna, Wis., Susan Hoepner of Woodville, Wis., and Karen Pogodzinski of New Richmond, Wis.; one son, Kenneth of Denver; two sisters, Caroline Wisker of Amarillo, Texas, and Laura Ervin of Los Lunas, N.M.; two brothers, Eugene of Orem, Utah, and Marvin of Ridgecrest, Calif.; two stepsisters, Betty Richins of Lyman, Wyo., and Irene Davis of Provo; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association of Colorado, 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver, CO 80231.

Berl W. Sherman

Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999

Red Cloud resident Berl Wallace Sherman, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Mike Lehr officiating. Burial will be in Red Cloud Cemetery.

Mr. Sherman was born Oct. 12, 1914, to Ralph and Laura (Harris) Sherman in Jewell County, Kan. He attended Fairview rural school and graduated from Northbranch Academy in Jewell County in 1932. On Feb. 9, 1937, he married Louise Cockroft in Smith Center, Kan. They lived in Franklin for one year. In 1938, they moved to Red Cloud where he managed Harris Grain Elevator. He then worked as a hog buyer, and he raised cattle from 1949-1974. In August 1955, he began working as a salesman for T-L Irrigation Co.

He was a member of the Red Cloud Housing Authority, the Webster County Museum Board and the Red Cloud Lions Club.

Survivor is his wife of Red Cloud.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

A memorial has been established.

R. Cedric Anderson

Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999

Hastings resident R. Cedric Anderson, 94, of 748 Circle A died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Winona C. Hoppens

Friday, Sept. 3, 1999

Harvard resident Winona C. (Stett) Hoppens, 91, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Harvard with the Rev. Stan Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery. Alberding Wilson Funeral Home of Harvard is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hoppens was born Dec. 6, 1907, to John A. and Teresa M. (Sutton) Stett in Stromsburg. On Aug. 15, 1928, she married Raymond J. Hoppens in Hastings. He preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in the Harvard area.

She was a member of Church of Christ and its Women's Guild.

Survivors are one son, Neil Hoppens of Onalaska, Wis.; three sisters, Vivian Van Deusen of Highland, Calif., Berneice Stett of Lancaster, Calif., and Shirley Kirk of Ritzville, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Deryl; one daughter, Arlene Keller; two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Village or the charity of the donor's choice.

Arvilla E. Treat

Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999

Services for rural Hastings resident Arvilla E. Treat, 64, of 905 E. 94th St., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Doniphan with the Rev. Rod Armon officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and from 6-8 p.m. at the church in Doniphan. The family will be present in the evening.

Gladys E. Templin

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999

Hebron resident Gladys Elsie (Degenhardt) Templin, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Hebron with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Templin was born Dec. 7, 1907, to Robert and Sarah (Howerter) Degenhardt near Hebron. She attended grade school at District No. 33 near Hebron and graduated from Hebron High School in 1924. She then attended Peru State College in Peru and taught at a rural school for two years. On Feb. 22, 1928, she married Lee E. Templin in Hebron. They farmed near Hebron for 64 years. On Feb. 8, 1992, her husband died. In 1994 she moved to the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Near By Neighbor Extension Club.

Survivors are two sons, Don and Dick, both of Hebron; two daughters, Norma Fry of Hastings and Roma Posey of Hubbell; one brother, Max of Hebron; one sister, Hazel Hartley of Chester; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Maxine S. Howard

Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999

Former Hastings resident Maxine S. (Shriver) Howard, 75, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Mrs. Howard was born Feb. 26, 1924, to Emory and Bessie Shriver in Hastings. She was raised in Hastings and graduated from Hastings Senior High School. She also graduated from Hastings Business College. She worked for LT&T, now Aliant Communications. On Jan. 14, 1944, she married Glenn Howard. He died Nov. 12, 1989. She moved to Grand Island in 1996.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Marilyn Carrier of Plano, Texas; one son, Gary of Grand Island; two sisters, Irene Bunker and Ethel Sovey, both of Lincoln; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Norman D. Dudek

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999

Hastings resident Norman D. Dudek, 71, of 920 Hill St., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Hastings with the Rev. Randy Madison officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today with family present 7-9 p.m., 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Dudek was born May 5, 1928, to Otto and Marie (Rehn) Dudek in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School and attended Hastings College for one year. On May 15, 1948, he married Pauline Brungardt in Hastings. He worked as a photo engraver for the Hastings Daily Tribune. He later worked for the Adams County Sheriff's Department and retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church and the American Historical Society of German-Russians. He also was a past city councilman and past mayor of Good Samaritan Village. He served as district lieutenant governor and was a past member of the Kiwanis club.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, James of Gordon and Robert of Lenexa, Kan.; two daughters, Beverly Fintel of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jane Bergquist of Lone Rock, Iowa; one brother, Leonard of Kenesaw; one sister, Kathryn Lutman of Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Evangelical Free Church Building Fund or the American Historical Society of German-Russians.

Sacramento, Calif., resident Phyllis Mills, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Sacramento.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter; one sister, Patricia Lampman of Hastings; and one grandchild.
