Harry 'Roger' Carley

Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999

Former Bostwick resident Harry "Roger" Carley, 72, of Farmington, N.M., died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at his home.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center, Kan., with masonic chaplain Lyman Attwood officiating. There is no visitation. Simmons Mortuary of Smith Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carley was born March 8, 1927, to Harry "Raymond" and Bessie Pearle (Wileman) Carley in Bostwick. He attended school in Clay Center. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46 as a Seaman First Class V6 USNR on the U.S.S. Bolinger and the U.S.S. Etlah. He also received the American Area Victory Medal. On April 13, 1952, he married Dorothy L. Yenne in Smith Center, Kan. They moved to Farmington in 1956 and worked for Reed-Roller Bit Co. He worked for several oil companies over the years, such as Phillips Petroleum, ACC Diamond Coring, Schlumberger Well Surveying and El Paso Natural Gas, while living in Counselor, N.M. He owned and operated Northwest Motors in Farmington from 1970-86. In 1977 they bought Eddie's Marine in Farmington, which later became Carley's Marine.

He was a former member of the Rio Arribe County Board of Education in New Mexico. He was past president of the New Mexico Automobile Dealer's Association and past vice president of the National Automobile Dealer's Association. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Animas Lodge No. 15 AF and AM. He also was a member of the Eastern Star Electa Chapter No. 13, American Legion Post No. 0093, all in Farmington; the VFW Post No. 614 in Aztec, N.M.; Retired Teamster's Union No. 29 in Crozet, Va.; and Western Conference Teamster's Union No. 492 in Albuquerque, N.M. He was a pilot with the Zioa Flying Club and a past member of the Elks Lodge No. 1747, both in Farmington.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Brenda Carley-Dostaler of Farmington; one son, Brad of Farmington; one sister, Frances Carley-Brabec of Westminster, Colo.; one stepsister, Violette Shefferd of Lincoln; one half brother, James of Broomfield, Colo.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to 1105 N. Orchao Ave., Farmington, N.M.

Richard L. Richeson Sr.

Monday, Sept. 13, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Richard L. Richeson Sr., 71, of Augusta, Ga., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center in Fort Gordon, Ga.

Services were Sept. 16 at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Augusta with the Rev. Mike Freed officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta. Poteet Funeral Home of Augusta was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Richeson was born Dec. 28, 1927, to Arthur A. and Ethel (Woodard) Richeson in Pauline. He moved in 1933 to Blue Hill and graduated from high school there. On March 20, 1949, he married Flossie Grosshans in Hastings. He joined the U.S. Army as a career and served in the Korean War and served three tours in the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension and the VFW Post. No. 649, both in Augusta.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Debra Hicks of Loganville, Ga.; three sons, David and Tim, both of Augusta, and Steven of Decatur, Ga.; one brother, Dale of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Jr.

Roger Schriner

Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999

Former Riverton resident Roger Schriner, 58, of Kearney, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Riverton Cemetery. Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schriner was born May 12, 1941, to Clarence and Leona (Engel) Schriner in Riverton. He grew up and attended school in Riverton. On Feb. 29, 1964, he married Edith Adelung. He worked as a truck driver and in construction. He played in several bands and had his own band.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Kimberly Maloley of Lincoln and Kammen Schriner of Omaha; his mother of Minden; five sisters, Glenda Stokes of Ravenna, Gaylene Hill of Minden, Dianna Wilhelms of Oxford, Vicky Poppe of Byron and Joy Lynn of Idaho; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The family requests no memorials.

Richard 'Jim' Freeburger

Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999

Hastings resident Richard "Jim" Freeburger, 74, of 1916 W. 14th St., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites by local veterans organizations. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Freeburger was born March 21, 1925, to Roy and Ava (Richert) Freeburger in Omaha. His family moved to Hastings when he was 2. In 1943 he graduated from Hastings Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 127th AAA Gun Battalion from 1943-46. On March 21, 1948, he married Phyllis Volk. He managed Adams and Kelly Millwork in Hastings from 1951-60. He then worked as a salesman for building supplies and millwork at Ashton Wholesale in Hastings. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, VFW, Eagles and American Legion, all in Hastings. He served on the Realty and Country Club boards at Southern Hills Country Club in Hastings. He also was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp in which he played bugle and won many competitions, including the Orange Bowl in Miami.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Sandra Reimnitz of Fremont; one son, Jim of Hastings; one sister, Arlene Nielsen of Denver; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard; one sister; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.

Richard A. Beckius

Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999

Superior resident Richard Allen Beckius, 53, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. James Brackett officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Beckius was born Aug. 11, 1946, to Joseph A. and Goldie Fern (Norwood) Beckius in Superior. He was raised in Superior and graduated from Superior High School in 1964. He then attended Kearney State College. From 1968-73 he served in the U.S. Navy. He married Linda Springer. He worked as a car salesman in Superior for several years. He was employed at Ray's Auto in Superior at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Superior Country Club and the VFW.

Survivors are one son, Cory of Omaha; his mother of Superior; one brother, Joe of Hayward, Calif.; and one sister, Evelyn Warne of Mankato, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Bert M. Dent

Monday, Sept. 27, 1999

Hastings resident Bert M. Dent, 78, of 1609 W. Eighth St., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mr. Dent was born March 21, 1921, to Bert and Flossie Mae (Cooper) Dent in Brewster. He graduated in 1938 from Halsey High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. On June 20, 1941, he married Ruby L. Landen. He owned and operated Mullen Standard Service Station in Mullen. He then moved to Hastings in 1989 where he was a customer service representative for Wal-Mart.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Susan Ljunggren of Hastings; one son, Randy of Westminster, Colo.; one brother, LaVern Dent of Mullen; one sister, Wynona Rodocker of Halsey; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Francis 'Jack' Elliott

Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999

Rural Blue Hill resident Francis "Jack" Elliott, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elliott was born Aug. 22, 1919, to Francis G. and Blanche Priscilla (Fair) Elliott in Smith County, Kan. He attended rural schools in Webster County and Smith County. He farmed for several years in Smith County and the Red Cloud area. On June 23, 1938, he married Winona Baker in Mankato, Kan. They moved to Red Cloud in 1954. He worked as a foreman for the road crew at Missouri Valley Construction for 32 years, retiring in 1988. In 1966 he and his wife moved to Grand Island. They moved to Cowles in 1994.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Bill of Red Cloud; two daughters, Tamara Gestring of Lincoln and Cheryl Wilson of Red Cloud; one sister, Opal Todl of Topeka, Kan.; one brother, Frank of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jack E. Buscher

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999

Hastings resident Jack E. Buscher, 59, of 117 E. Sixth St., died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Buscher was born March 26, 1940, to Henry E. and Leona (Harris) Buscher in Adams County. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard in Nebraska. On Nov. 11, 1965, he married Peggy A. Doht. He worked as a meat cutter for W.B. Pack in Blue Hill, Steve's Butcher Shop in Doniphan and The Butcher Shop in Fairfield.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Tamara Buscher of Hastings; two sons, Mark of Phillips and Scot of Hastings; two sisters, Ruth Buscher of Hastings and Mary Lou Molder of Menasha, Wis.; two brothers, Lester of Hastings and Robert of Silver Lake, Kan.; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Lydia Ham

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999

Former Hastings resident Lydia (Bader) Ham, 92, of Bakersfield, Calif., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Saron Lutheran Cemetery near Saronville. Visitation is prior to services Friday at the church. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ham was born June 14, 1907, to Michael and Sophie (Wall) Bader in Nesselrode, Russia. In 1911 her family emigrated to America and settled in western Kansas. She graduated from the Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha in 1935. That same year, she married Clyde H. Ham in St. Francis, Kan. In July 1960, her husband died. She worked as a school nurse and then as a nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. She then moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings to work as a nursing supervisor. In 1994 she moved to Soquel, Calif. In 1997 she moved to Bakersfield.

Survivors are two daughters, Gail Mathews of Lincoln and Corinne Stone of Tehachupi, Calif.; one son, Gordon of Denver; three brothers, Otto of Wilsall, Mont., Robert of Grand Island and Paul of Valentine; one sister, Meta Dankenbring of Bird City, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Rae, and three brothers.

John L. Shaw

Holstein resident John L. Shaw, 99, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Faye Shada

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999

Hastings resident Faye Shada, 51, of 314 E. 12th St., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Opal Stahl

Monday, Sept. 20, 1999

Nelson resident Opal (Farver) Stahl, 82, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, in Nelson.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home chapel in Nelson with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stahl was born Sept. 23, 1916, to Otto L. and Mary (Baker) Farver near Nelson. She graduated from school in Nelson in 1936. On July 22, 1942, she married Orville Stahl. She worked several years at the McCord's Grocery Store in Nelson. On Nov. 14, 1988, her husband died.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Nelson for more than 50 years. She also was a former member of the Rebekkah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are one daughter, Mary Kostelny of Bagdad, Fla.; one son, Jack of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Margaret Reed of Nelson; one brother, Oliver "Pete" of Nelson; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by four brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Nelson Community United Church of Christ or the Nelson Good Samaritan Center.
