Sheryl P. 'Sherry' Freed

Friday, Sept. 10, 1999

Former Hastings resident Sheryl P. "Sherry" (Nickel) Freed, 51, of Houston died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Houston.

The remains were cremated. Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Interment will be private with the family. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Freed was born Oct. 22, 1947, to Jerry and Jeanne (Parker) Nickel in Kearney. She graduated in 1966 from St. Cecilia High School in Hastings. She worked at Sears and Montgomery Ward in Hastings. In 1994 she married Floyd W. Freed III in Houston. She worked as a manager of Champions Golf Club in Houston. She was working as a legal secretary for her husband at the time of her death.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Bryan Beiriger of Chula Vista, Calif.; one daughter, Melissa Hill of Nashville, Tenn.; one stepson, Floyd IV of Houston; one stepdaughter, Jennifer Freed of Houston; her father of Hastings; two brothers, Greg Nickel of California and Kelly Nickel of Hastings; one sister, Connie Nickel of Hastings; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to Hospice Care in Houston in care of Jerry Nickel, 2514 W. 10th St., Hastings, NE 68901.

Edward A. Valasek

Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999

Hastings resident the Rev. Edward A. Valasek, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in Hastings.

Rosary is 10 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church near Lawrence. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

The Rev. Valasek was born March 15, 1919, to John and Theresa (Susola) Valasek in Tarentum, Pa. On June 29, 1946, he was ordained at the Baltimore Basilica in Baltimore. He was a retired priest of the Lincoln Diocese.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Clarence B. Ellis

Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Clarence Buford Ellis, 83, of Haysville, Kan., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Haysville.

A private family service will be conducted. Baker Funeral Home of Valley Center, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ellis was born April 21, 1916, to Hubert and Adelle (Thurman) Ellis in Henderson, Ky. He married Florence Elsie Wendt. He lived in the Hastings and Roseland areas for 40 years and worked as a painter. He later retired. On Nov. 19, 1989, his wife died.

Survivors are four daughters, Patti Ellis of Wichita, Kan., Mary Ness of York, Pa., Martha Kline of Virginia and Debbie Ellis of Grand Island; one brother, Hubert of Lincoln; four sisters, Nina Fay Peters of Texas, Frances Kay Cesak of Cedar Ridge, Calif., Virginia Knaub of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Peggy Machisic of Banning, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Make A Wish Foundation of Kansas Inc.

Stanley F. Pavelka Sr.

Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999

Rural Bladen resident Stanley F. Pavelka Sr., 74, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Paul Hirsch officiating. Burial will be in the Cloverton Cemetery southeast of Bladen. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. until services Tuesday at the church. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pavelka was born Nov. 30, 1924, to Frank and Christine (Hoskovec) Pavelka on the family farm southeast of Bladen. He attended Prairie Gem Country School and graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1942. On June 23, 1946, he married Darlene A. Fassler in Hastings. He farmed his entire life near Bladen.

He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club, both in Hastings. He also played Santa Claus for more than 20 years in Blue Hill.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Stanley Jr. of Bladen; three daughters, Rosalyn Piel of Arvada, Colo., Mary Johnson of Hastings and Sylvia Fink of Bladen; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Jennie Reiber

Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999

Hastings resident Jennie (Lay) Reiber, 95, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Reiber was born Oct. 26, 1903, to Aalerich and Deber (Meester) Lay in Adams County. On July 11, 1924, she married Henry Reiber. On April 12, 1986, her husband died.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the World War I Barracks No. 1556 Auxiliary and the Adams County Historical Society. She was a past member of the Second Presbyterian Church where she was an ordained elder and served as clerk of session for several years.

Survivors are one daughter, Peggy Tjarks of Hastings.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301-0639 or the Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History.

Betty E. Koontz

Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999

Edgar resident Betty Eilene (Kollman) Koontz, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

Mrs. Koontz was born July 15, 1922, to Floyd and Mildred (Thomas) Kollman in Edgar. She graduated from eighth grade at Bethany Country School and graduated from Edgar High School. She attended the Lincoln School of Commerce. On Nov. 29, 1940, she married Robert Koontz in Marysville, Kan. He later preceded her in death. She and her husband farmed near Edgar.

She was a member of the Church of the Plains, Presbyterian Women's Association, Chapter AA P.E.O., Triple E Extension Club, Eastern Star No. 135 and the American Legion Auxiliary No. 248, all in Edgar.

Survivors are one daughter, Lynn Howard of Gilroy, Calif.; her mother of Edgar; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Delton W. Hubert

Friday, Sept. 17, 1999

Former Upland resident Delton W. Hubert, 72, of Oakley, Kan., died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at the St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital in Denver.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oakley with the Revs. Theodore Cook and Alvin Bruenger officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Oakley Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley.

Mr. Hubert was born July 1, 1927, to Julius F. and Rosa M. (Volk) Hubert in Upland. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman, 1st Class Submarine during World War II. On April 7, 1947, he married Lois Y. Jameson at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Upland. He was a former high school teacher and coach at Monument and Winona Schools in Kansas. He also worked as a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 2981, American Legion Post. No. 339, all in Oakley, and School District No. 274 Board of Education. He was president of the Bluestem Charolais Association and the Kansas Charolais Association. He was director of the American International Charolais Association and a member of the AICA Hall of Fame. He was a chairman of the State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee and a member of the Logan County ASCS Committee for 17 years.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Gregory and Timothy, both of Oakley, David of Monument, Kan., and Randall of Wichita, Kan.; three daughters, Susan Pfannenstiel of Oakley, Lynne Wheeler of Ft. Scott, Kan., and Dianne Swanson of Bay, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church, the American Heart Association or the Oakley High School Athletic Department/Scholarship.

Ernest T. 'Butch' Stengel

Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999

Shickley resident Ernest T. "Butch" Stengel, 85, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Geneva.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. tonight at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shickley with the Monsignor Ivan Vap officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation starts at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Stengel was born July 5, 1914, to Emil and Anna (Eich) Stengel in Sutton. He was a retired farmer and cattle feeder.

Survivors are his wife, Viola of Shickley; three sons, Dale and Gerald, both of Shickley, and Daniel of Joplin, Mo.; four daughters, DeAnna Strothkamp of Geneva, Judy Zimmer of Lincoln, Genene Bowen of Central City and Mary Kopecky of Omaha; two sisters, Margaret Rhor of Geneva and Deloris Stengel of Lincoln; two brothers, John and Charley, both of Geneva; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Gene Kramer

Friday, Sept. 17, 1999

Nelson resident Gene Kramer, 77, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Nelson Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.

Mr. Kramer was born Sept. 16, 1922, to John and Jessie (Mellick) Kramer in Nelson. He graduated from Nelson High School. From 1941-45 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later was employed by a construction company as a heavy equipment operator. On Nov. 29, 1950, he married Ann Burkett. On Oct. 10, 1984, his wife died.

Survivors are one son, Mike Valentine of Harvard; one sister, Jackie Myers of Nelson; and two grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Loyd W. Reiners

Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999

Hastings resident Loyd William Reiners, 73, of 1306 N. Williams Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery near Juniata. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Reiners was born Nov. 24, 1925, to Reiner F. and Anna M. (Richter) Reiners in Adams County. On June 24, 1951, he married Winafred L. Benker at Christ Lutheran Church near Juniata. He farmed and was a maintenance engineer for Norwest Bank in Hastings.

He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church and a past member of the Lutheran Laymen's League.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Andre of Hastings; two daughters, LuAnn Reiners and Wynnette Downing, both of Hastings; three sisters, Viola Brock of Lincoln, Bernice Sohl of Concordia, Mo., and Verna Eucker of Spokane, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Nate, and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Helen Fisher

Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999

Superior resident Helen (Maxwell) Fisher, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fisher was born July 11, 1907, to Jay and Josephine (Wilson) Maxwell on a farm in Jewell County, Kan., near Hardy. Her mother died when she was 8 months old. She was raised by her uncle and aunt, Fred and Maude Calder. On Feb. 10, 1926, she married Hazel Troy Fisher in Mankato, Kan. They then moved to Superior. On Aug. 10, 1969, her husband died.

Survivors are one son, Rex of Stewartville, Minn.; one foster sister, Blanche Bjorling of Superior; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.
