Ruth E. Caldwell

Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999

Burr Oak, Kan., resident Ruth Emma (Zimmerman) Caldwell, 53, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Northbranch Friends Church in Northbranch, Kan. A private family burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Kan. Kansas City Funeral Directors of Kansas City, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Caldwell was born Dec. 17, 1945, to the Rev. Ezra and Loretto Zimmerman in Stratton. She moved with her family around Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. She attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan., where she earned her nursing degree. On Aug. 29, 1964, she married Mike Caldwell at Northbranch Friends Church in Northbranch. She was the Jewell County Health Nurse at the time of her death.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Marc of Superior and Matt of Deshler; one brother, Gail of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters, Glenda Mosiman of Benton, Kan., and Karlene Donze of Anaheim, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be given in care of the family at Farmer's State Bank in Superior.

Jonathon D. Reiber

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999

Minden resident Jonathon D. Reiber, 19, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in a car accident near Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Revs. Jim Miller and William Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings and from noon until services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Reiber was born Aug. 13, 1980, to Doug and Judy (Klein) Reiber in Hastings. He lived most of his life in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1999. He played varsity boys soccer all four years of high school. He was All State-All Conference in soccer and also Academic All-Conference for two years. He played in the North-South Shrine Soccer Classic in 1999. He also played on the Grand Island Nova Competitive Soccer Team for the last four years. He received an Academic-Athlete Scholarship to Hastings College, where he was a freshman and played on the varsity men's soccer team at the time of his death. He had played soccer for 14 years. He was also a peer mediator at the college.

Survivors are his parents of Minden; one sister, Carrie Reiber of Lincoln; and his grandmother, Elizabeth Klein of Juniata.

He was preceded in death by one brother; two grandfathers; and one grandmother.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings High Booster Club or for a scholarship in his name at Hastings College.

Cecil P. Richards

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999

Geneva resident Cecil P. Richards, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Burial will be in the Geneva Public Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mr. Richards was born May 19, 1903, to Arthur and Effie (Morse) Richards in Geneva. He married Donna S. Tatro. She died on Jan. 26, 1994.

Survivors are one son, Dale of Geneva; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Jacob H. Krull

Friday, Sept. 17, 1999

Former Hastings resident Jacob H. Krull, 91, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings.

Lee 'Bud' Koenig

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999

Former Red Cloud resident Lee "Bud" Koenig, 82, of Greeley, Colo., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Northglenn, Colo.

Mr. Koenig was born June 17, 1917, to John and Millie (Lesabenn) Koenig in Red Cloud. He attended Rural School District 10 and Red Cloud High School. He farmed in the Red Cloud area for several years. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations. On Aug. 21, 1942, he married Dorothy Delka in Mankato, Kan. They lived in Red Cloud where he worked as an auto mechanic. In 1948 they moved to Derby, Colo., where he worked for Gates Rubber Co. The next year, he began working for Union Pacific Railroad and retired in 1979. They moved to Greeley, Colo., in 1981.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Marvel Andeson of Greeley; one sister, Ila Crawford of Bennett, Colo.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Irene Hansen

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999

Minden resident Irene (Bader) Hansen, 80, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Hansen was born Jan. 2, 1919, to Cloyd E. and Bessie (Keedle) Bader near Minden. She grew up in the Minden area and graduated from Holdrege High School. On Aug. 5, 1940, she married Robert "Bob" Hansen. They lived most of their married life in the Minden area. In 1997 her husband died.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Linda Jameson of Minden and Kary Beth Smith of Milwaukee; one son, Robert of Bertrand; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Raymond H. Janssen

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999

Blue Hill resident Raymond H. Janssen, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church cemetery west of Glenvil. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Janssen was born Feb. 4, 1924, to Henry and Ollie (Hinrickus) Janssen in Adams County. On Dec. 31, 1943, he married Martha M. Frerichs. He was a farmer in Adams County until retiring in 1986. He also worked on soil conservation with the Soil Conservation Service, the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and 4-H. For 1951-55 he received the Omaha World-Herald Dry Land Outstanding Conservation work award. In 1958 he was visited by a Russian delegation. He had the first deep well irrigation development farm in Nebraska through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was the first to test applying fertilizer through irrigation water, new insecticides by plane for corn borers, bench leveling to prevent erosion and irrigate in one run, and the use of the development of minimum tillage. He also invented the stubble mulcher.

He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served on the council and was an usher.

Survivors are his wife of Hastings; one daughter, Phyllis Oelschlager of Juniata; one son, Larry of Minden; one brother, Martin of Hastings; one sister, Berdena Johnson of Hastings; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Minden resident Jonathon D. Reiber, 19, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in a car accident near Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings.

John Kruse

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999

Hildreth resident John Kruse, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mr. Kruse was born Feb. 10, 1912, to Herman and Joan (Arnold) Kruse near Hildreth. He grew up and attended school in the Macon area. On Feb. 7, 1937, he married Rose Casper. They farmed north of Hildreth until 1944 when they moved to a farm south of Hildreth. They moved into Hildreth in 1976. He worked for the Hildreth Public Schools until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; five sons, Donald of Alma, Ronald and Thomas, both of Hildreth, Gary of Grand Island and Bruce of Kearney; one daughter, Janette Vanderbeek of Curtis; one sister, Lovena Krouse of Haigler; 16 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; three sisters; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Hildreth Volunteer Fire Department, the Bethany Home or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Alyce C. Leininger

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999

Sutton resident Alyce Clare Leininger, 93, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. tonight and services are 10 a.m. Friday, both at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sutton with the Rev. David Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery near Sutton. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Leininger was born March 8, 1906, to George William and Mary (Buttell) Leininger near Sutton. She attended School District 20 and later taught there. She graduated from St. Mary's College in Omaha with a bachelor's degree. She then attended Creighton University where she received her medical training. She earned her master's degree and doctorate at Catholic University in Washington D.C. She began working at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. She worked in Boise, Idaho, and then managed a lab for a pathologist/coroner in San Francisco. In 1959 she moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., in the department of communicable diseases. She often worked on special assignments for the Center for Communicable Diseases out of Atlanta. She retired in 1989. In 1995 she moved to the Sutton Community Home.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was a former member of St. Peter and Paul Church and its Altar Society in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

Bernice C. Kaldahl

Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999

Hastings resident Bernice Carla (Hansen) Kaldahl, 85, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Perkins.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd in Hastings with the Rev. John Lee Ross officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mrs. Kaldahl was born Dec. 23, 1913, to Jens C. and Christina (Houtwed) Hansen near Ruskin. She graduated from Ruskin High School and attended Dana College at Blair for one year. On Jan. 10, 1937, she married William Beck Kaldahl in Ruskin. She was a church organist and piano teacher. She moved from Omaha to Hastings in 1982. Her husband died Aug. 19, 1995.

She was a member of The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd.

Survivors are one daughter, Marlene B. Wilson of Garden City, Kan.; one son, Wayne of Lincoln; one sister, Ethel Mortensen of Eugene, Ore., and five grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd, 1338 Saunders Ave., Hastings, NE 68901 or Pella Lutheran Church, 303 S. 41st, Omaha, NE 68131.

Eva M. Shepard

Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999

Lincoln resident Eva Mae Shepard, 64, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, including Kathy S. Jones Shepard of Hastings; two sisters; one brother; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edna E. Stephenson

Monday, Sept. 13, 1999

Hebron resident Edna Ethlyn (Newell) Stephenson, 95, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will be in Clay Center Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stephenson was born Aug. 12, 1904 in Hebron. She attended school in Hebron and for a short time in Scottsbluff, before graduating from Hebron High School in 1923. She graduated from Hastings Business College in 1925. On Nov. 6, 1924, she married Willis "Mike" Stephenson in Belleville, Kan. They lived on an Indian reservation at Wanblee, S.D., from 1926-34. They then bought a farm near Clay Center, where they lived until 1964. They bought another farm near Nelson. On March 17, 1970, her husband died. She returned to Hebron to care for her mother, Dora Newell Longbrake. She moved to Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron 4 1/2 years ago.

Survivors are one daughter, Bethleen Hakanson of Bettendorf, Iowa; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Thayer County Health Services, Blue Valley Nursing Home physical therapy department or to the family.
