William J. Hefnider

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999

Former Tribland area resident William John Hefnider, 88, of Springdale, Ark., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in Springdale.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale with the Rev. Gerald Renken officiating. Memorial Funeral Home in Springdale is in charge of arrangements. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements. There is no visitation.

Mr. Hefnider was born Sept. 4, 1911, to George and Marguerita (Hein) Hefnider in Unidica, Russia. He worked as a farmer in the Roseland area. He also was a baker. He married Laura Syring.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale.

Survivors are his wife; one son, William of Hastings, Minn.; two daughters, La Vaun F. Soucek of Kansas City, Kan., and Norma J. Eurek of Canon City, Colo.; two brothers, Jake of Hastings and Adam of Oceanside, Calif.; one sister, Mary Dobesh of Hastings; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Betty S. Hullett

Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999

Former Superior resident Betty S. (Sheets) Hullett, 69, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in Lincoln.

Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery near Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hullett was born Nov. 24, 1929, to Emmett and Bernice (Leach) Sheets in Beaver City. She married Jack Hullett and worked as a medical social worker at Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln. On April 15, 1970, her husband died.

Survivors are two sons, Jack Jr. of Bridgeton, Mo., and Charles of Lincoln; three daughters, Ann Purdy of Wakefield, Mass., Patricia Hullett of Maple Grove, Minn., and Judith Hullett of Rumford, R.I.; one brother, Stanley of Superior; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.

Albert M. 'Junior' Sadd Jr.

Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999

Hastings resident Albert M. "Junior" Sadd Jr., 66, of 219 E. Third St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mr. Sadd was born May 30, 1933, to Albert M. Sr. and Helen K. (Abraham) Sadd in Denman. He graduated from Trumbull High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On July 31, 1959, he married Delores R. Connett. He worked as a press setup operator and group leader at Hastings Industries. He lived in Glenvil before moving to Hastings 40 years ago.

He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Kearney and the American Legion Club in Glenvil.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Brenda Breckner of Hastings; two sons, Kevin and Bryan, both of Hastings; two sisters, LaVon Mohr of Houston and Jeanette Hendrickson of Harvard; five brothers, Ronnie of Hastings, Larry of Doniphan, Jerry of Harvard, Danny of Glenvil and Steve of Geneva; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Midlands Chapter.

Florence M. Hogeland

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999

Bloomington resident Florence Marie (Decker) Hogeland, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Franklin Nursing Center in Franklin.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hogeland was born Feb. 4, 1918, to John and Grace (Forden) Decker near Bloomington. She attended School District No. 16 and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1935. On Nov. 21, 1945, she married Bonnie Andrew Hogeland in Phillipsburg, Kan. He died March 18, 1996.

She was a member of the Bloomington Legion Auxiliary, Paul Hartt Unit No. 145. She recently reached her 50-year membership and was a gold star member.

Survivors are two sons, Jim of Bruning and Steve of Hayes Center; one sister, Marjorie Eldred of Red Cloud; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Mary Barta

Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999

Hastings resident Mary (Souchek) Barta, 97, of 725 E. Second St. died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Barta was born Aug. 10, 1902, to Frank and Anna (Stretesky) Souchek near Spring Ranch in Clay County. On Nov. 16, 1921, she married Stanley Barta. They moved to Hastings in 1925. Her husband died June 16, 1988.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the church circle.

Survivors are one daughter, Ellen Kottwitz of Hastings; three sons, John of Hastings, Stanley of Vancouver, Wash., and Wayne of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; one sister, Evalyn Schroer of Hastings; one brother, Joseph Souchek of Minden; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters; one brother; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Village.

Phyllis L. Bender

Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999

Sutton resident Phyllis Lodema (Olson) Bender, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Omaha.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn with the Rev. Peggy Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bender was born June 12, 1919, to Ednum and Hannah (Nordenstam) Olson in Swedeburg. She worked as a registered nurse. She married Paul Bender. He preceded her in death.

Survivors are two daughters, Clare Bender of Rochester, Minn., and Lunda Miller of Sutton; one son, Paul of Elkhorn; one sister, Lenore Fell of Minneapolis; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Sutton Memorial Library, the Sutton Zion Lutheran Church or the Paul and Lodema Bender Scholarship Fund.

Blanche Bjorling

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999

Superior resident Blanche (Calder) Bjorling, 99, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Superior.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in the Hardy Cemetery. There is no visitation.

Mrs. Bjorling was born Feb. 26, 1900, to Fred and Maude (Maxwell) Calder in rural Hardy. She lived in Hardy for about 50 years. She married Wilbur Bjorling. They farmed near Hardy. They later moved to Lincoln where she worked as a practical nurse at Lincoln General Hospital. In 1984 her husband died. She returned to the Superior-Hardy area in 1992.

She was a former member of the Hardy Union Church and a member of the Methodist Church. She was a leader in 4-H clubs and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, both in Hardy. She was an organizer for the Hardy choral group, the Harmonettes. She was also a member of the Women's Club in Hardy and Lincoln.

Survivors are one daughter, Mary Jo Fairall of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; two sons, Edward of Scottsbluff and Fred of Glenview, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Billie; one brother; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Superior Good Samaritan Center.

Zetha L. Kauffman

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999

Hastings resident Zetha L. (Harrington) Kauffman, 84, of 1139 W. Sixth St. died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

The remains were cremated. Rosary is 10:15 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. There will be no visitation. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kauffman was born July 3, 1915, to John and Mary H. (Heltenberg) Harrington in Ayr. On April 10, 1937, she married Francis L. Dillon. He preceded her in death. On May 24, 1988, she married Leo Kauffman. She worked as a nurse's aide at Hasting Regional Center.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and its Altar Society.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Marilyn Dillon Brown of Hastings and Frances Dillon Fairchild of Spring Valley, Calif.; one son, John Dillon of Greenfield, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Association.

Bernard S. Blair

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999

Formoso, Kan., resident Bernard S. Blair, 85, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kan.

The remains were cremated. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato, Kan. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato.

Mr. Blair was born April 23, 1914, to Earl Eugene and Pearl Avis (King) Blair in Washington Township, Jewell County, Kan. He attended country schools in Jewell County and Glenwood, Iowa, and high school in Mankato. He farmed, sold Pioneer Seed, trained horses and raised livestock.

He was a member of the Jewell County Hospital Board and the Rural Water District Board and a trustee for Sinclair Township and for Unity School, Jewell County District 101, all in Jewell County.

Survivors are his wife, Wilma; one daughter, Marjo Kort of Blue Hill; three sons, Steven of Dallas, Aaron of Gaithersburg, Md., and Bradley of Omaha; one sister, Eva Reboul of Clay Center, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the hospital or the Jewell County Endowment Association Scholarship Fund.

Gene A. Nelson

Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999

Minden resident Gene Allen Nelson, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery with military rites provided by the Minden American Legion Post No. 94. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Nelson was born Nov. 12, 1927, to Victor and Esther (Peterson) Nelson in Hayes Township in Kearney County. He grew up in Kearney County and graduated from Minden High School in 1946. From 1946-48 he served in the U.S. Marines. He then returned to Kearney to farm. On June 21, 1950, he married Dorothy Johansen. They lived on a farm near Minden until 1985 when they moved into Minden. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Jerry of Milton Keynes, England, and Terry of Minden; and five grandchildren.

Grace Brader

Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999

Hastings resident Grace (Hinrikus) Brader, 100, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brader was born May 31, 1899, to Hinrikus J. and Johanna (Prull) Hinrikus in Adams County. On March 23, 1921, she married Charles Brader. He died Sept. 16, 1988.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Second Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Women's Society and a charter member of the HA extension club.

Survivors are one son, Dale of Glenvil; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters; two brothers; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church.
