Monday, Jan. 17, 2000

Burr Oak, Kan., resident Jane (Bernard) Harris, 84, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Mankato, Kan.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Burr Oak Methodist Church with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.

Mrs. Harris was born March 27, 1915, to Gus and Eunice (Swim) Bernard in Almena, Kan. She graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1932. She then taught school at Bethel and Meyers country schools near Burr Oak. She attended a cosmetology school for one year in Salina, Kan., and later owned and operated a beauty salon in Burr Oak. On Aug. 15, 1950, she married Nelson Harris in Pierre, S.D.

She was a member of the Burr Oak American Legion Auxiliary, the Extension Unit Club, the Country Women's Club and Methodist Women's Group and was a former Girl Scout leader.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Shelly Harris of Burr Oak; and one sister, Ruth Maughan of Fairbury.

Memorials may be given to the Central Kansas Council Girl Scouts or the American Diabetes Association.

Clarence E. Jurgensmeier

Wednesday May 12, 1999

Hastings resident Clarence E. Jurgensmeier, 82, of 2418 W. 10th St. died Wednesday May 12, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Jurgensmeier was born June 14, 1916, to Ben and Matilda (Kempkes) Jurgensmeier in Madrid. On Nov. 22, 1943, he married Beatrice Pohlmeier in Lawrence. He farmed in the Lawrence area. In 1982 he moved to Hastings.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and its Men's Club, and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors are his wife of Hastings; four sons, Don and Tom Jurgensmeier, both of Hastings, Walter Rempe of Shelby and Brother Herbert Rempe, O.F.M. of Chicago; one daughter, Theresa Schneider of Hastings; six sisters, Bertha Glennemeier and LaVeta Legg, both of Logan, Kan., Irene Moreland of Gailsberg, Mo., Maxine Miller of Bakersfield, Calif., Patricia Thompson of Lancaster, Calif., and Lois Jurgensmeier of Hastings; one brother, Robert Jurgensmeier of Lakeside, Calif., 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Lowell "Bruce" Ginn

Sunday May 9, 1999

Former Hastings resident Lowell "Bruce" Ginn of Lincoln, 40, died Sunday May 9, 1999, in Lincoln.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull with the Rev. Steve Hodgson officiating. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bruce was born April 2, 1959, to Eugene and Wilta (Lyons) Ginn in Central City. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to Trumbull and attended school in Harvard and Trumbull. He worked as a mechanic and owned his own shop for a time.

Survivors are three daughters, Tera Ginn of Grand Island, Jackie Ginn of Hastings, and Shauna Ginn of Kearney; five sons, Joshua, Justin, Jeremy, Trevor and Matthew, all of Hastings; one sister, Lyla Kruse of Kansas City, Kan.; and five brothers, Lynn, Lyle and Leon, all of Trumbull, Larry of Deshler, and Roy Gene Lyons Ginn of Mt. Rose, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Donald Bierhaus

Tuesday May 11, 1999

Former Campbell resident Donald Bierhaus, 73, of Grand Island died Tuesday May 11, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Daniel Bremer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Mr. Bierhaus was born Jan. 20, 1926, to Leslie and Emma (McCoy) Bierhaus in Campbell. In 1944 he graduated from Campbell High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-45 during World War II. He was wounded in Okinawa, and received the purple heart, APTC ribbon and a bronze service star. On Aug. 14, 1947, he married Elaine Bartels in Campbell. They lived in Campbell where he worked for Bud's Market for several years before owning and operating Don's Locker in Campbell for 16 years. In 1966 he and his wife moved to Grand Island where he worked for Sperry New Holland. He retired in 1987. He suffered a stroke in 1988.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Platt-Duetsche Society, Doniphan Legion Post No. 300, VFW Post No. 10755, Nebraska Sheriff's Association and the Saddle Club. He was a life member of DAV Chapter 11 and Military Order of the Purple Heart No. 632.

Survivors are his wife of Grand Island; two sons, Dean of Grand Island and Leroy of Lander, Wyo.; two daughters, Ann Ottman and Sheila Wieland, both of Grand Island; two brothers, Milford of Campbell and Robert of Lincoln; three sisters, Helen Anderson of Holdrege, Velma Mattison of Campbell and Alta Henk of Western; nine grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Hastings resident Glenn Groshans, 73, of 735 N. Minnesota Ave. died Thursday May 13, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.

Dorothea J. 'Dottie' Vacek

Monday, May 1, 2000

Hastings resident Dorothea J. "Dottie" (Krull) Bockstadter Vacek, 49, of 17 Sara Drive died Monday, May 1, 2000, at her home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Thomas Murray officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Vacek was born May 16, 1950, to Lloyd and Phyllis (Hall) Krull in Campbell. She attended Roseland Grade School and graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1968. She attended Central Community College-Hastings. In August 1973, she married Terry Bockstadter. They divorced in 1991. On Oct. 25, 1996, she married Mark Vacek. She was manager of Total Image Beauty Salon in Hastings.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a volunteer for the Adams County Court Appointed Special Advocates program.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Brent Bockstadter of McCook and Brandon Bockstadter of Kenesaw; one daughter, Alison Bockstadter of Hastings; two stepchildren, Korey Vacek and Ashley Vacek, both of Ayr; her parents of Hastings; one brother, Gene of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Edna E. Goldenstein

Kenesaw resident Edna E. Goldenstein, 88, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at the Kenesaw Haven Home.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Jack Morgan

July 26, 1999

Former Hardy resident Jack Morgan, 81, of Keizer, Ore., died July 26, 1999, in Keizer.

Memorial graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bostwick Cemetery in rural Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morgan was born Sept. 25, 1917, to Harvey W. and Clara Lulu (Lowe) Morgan in Hardy. He attended Nebraska State Teacher's College and taught in Sioux County. He and his wife, Ila, were married in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy as a welding supervisor for 28 years and then retired. He moved to Bainbridge Island, Wash., in 1940 and to Keizer in 1987.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Patricia Sutherland of Lynwood, Wash., Marilyn Casey of Fairfax, Va., and Kathleen Bish of Bremerton, Wash.; one son, Harvey of Snohomish, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ralph H. Portenier

Sunday, April 30, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Ralph H. Portenier, 91, of Wymore died, at the Beatrice Community Hospital in Beatrice.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Jon Palmquist officiating. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Portenier was born April 22, 1909, to Jacob and Abbie (Sidlow) Portenier north of Guide Rock. He grew up in Webster County and graduated from Eckley Consolidated School in 1926. On Dec. 10, 1930, he married Norma Burwell in Inavale. They farmed near Guide Rock. In 1932 he began working for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service and was chairman of the Webster County Committee. He retired in 1970. In 1976 he and his wife moved to Hastings and then to Wymore in 1999.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Darrel of Linn, Kan., Gail of Wymore and Gary of Seward; one sister, Helen Bosley of Hastings; 14 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Wymore Church of Christ.

Ray Phillips

Tuesday, May 9, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Ray Phillips, 91, of Waverly died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Tabitha Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseland with the Rev. Thomas Au officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in rural Roseland. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Phillips was born June 13, 1908, to Henry and Pauline (Bohr) Phillips in Juniata. On April 11, 1934, he married Margaret Mangers at Assumption Catholic Church. He farmed near Ayr until 1948 when he moved to Hastings. He worked for Byers Lumber Co. in Hastings until 1960 and then moved to Assumption. He and his wife owned and operated the grocery story in Assumption for 11 1/2 years before retiring to Roseland. They moved to Waverly in 1997.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus and a former member of the Eagles Club in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Ronald of Omaha; four daughters, Carol Svoboda of Lincoln, Beverly Dunn of Rio Vista, Calif., Sister Margaret Phillips of Waverly and Linda Iwen of Omaha; two sisters, Theresa Brannagan of Hastings and Lorry Roberts of Boise, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Ray Phillips Memorial Fund.

Nola J. Gleason

Wednesday, May 10, 2000

Minden resident Nola Jean (Johansen) Gleason, 70, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at the Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Heartwell Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Gleason was born March 15, 1930, to George and Anna (Torske) Johansen in Heartwell. She grew up in the Heartwell area and graduated from Heartwell High School in 1947. She then attended Kearney State College. On June 20, 1948, she married Carl Gleason in Heartwell. They lived and farmed north of Minden. He died in 1991.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Minden and the church circle, Heartwell VFW Auxiliary and Heartwell Extension Club.

Survivors are three sons, Calvin of Holdrege, Robert of Minden and Allen of Heartwell; three daughters, Cheryl Von Arx of Gresham, Ore., Norma Gleason of Ainsworth and Carla Gleason of Hastings; two brothers, Verdon of Heartwell and Lawrence of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Lois Ann Shiers of Gibbon, Verla Steiner of Inavale and Viola Sinsel of Minden; and five grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Edward N. Pittz

Monday, March 6, 2000

Minden resident Edward N. Pittz, 84, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery with military rites conducted by Minden American Legion Post No. 94. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Pittz was born Oct. 10, 1915, to Peter and Gertrude (Arensdorf) Pittz near Holstein. He grew up in Adams County and attended school there. He graduated from school in Louisville, Ky., as a television repair technician. During World War II, he served in the 41st Armored Infantry, Second Armored Division. He was stationed in Africa, Sicily, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. On Dec. 3, 1945, he married Lorraine Einspahr. They lived in Holstein where he was co-owner of Pittz's Garage. He also was a bus driver for Holstein Public School and postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service from 1961-1968. In 1973 he and his wife moved to Minden where he was a rural route carrier for the Postal Service until retirement.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the 40 & 8 Club, Minden American Legion Post No. 94, Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Retired Rural Carriers. He also was a charter member of the Holstein American Legion Post No. 305 and the Holstein Lions Club. He received the Bronze Star.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Vaughn of Coppell, Texas; two daughters, Beverly Burson of Grand Island and Shirley Stolpman of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Lester of Holstein; one sister, Leona McDowell of Agri, Kan.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Willis R. Deines

Friday, March 3, 2000

Former Clay Center resident Willis R. Deines, 88, of Harlingen, Texas, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at a health care center in Harlingen.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Clay Center Cemetery with the Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Deines was born to William and Alvina (Schroeder) Deines in Clay Center and raised there. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1936 and taught the next three years at Ansley schools. In 1937 he married Helen May Williamson in Clay Center. They moved to Salinas, Calif., in 1939 where he worked as a salesman and office manager for Preimer Poultry Co. In 1943 they moved to Harlingen where he was assistant manager of the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers and Shippers Association. He became vice president in 1960 and was instrumental in developing the gift fruit business. He retired in 1977 but remained an adviser for 10 more years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen and served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, deacon and ordained elder. He also was a member of the Harlingen Country Club and served on the Palm Valley Water Board. He was awarded the Scott Toothaker Commemorative Award from the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers and Shippers Association.

Survivors are his wife; one son, the Rev. Stephen Deines of Cozad; one daughter, Bonnie Mayers of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Adella Harrell of Redding, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert.

Memorials may be given to the family or the donor's choice.
