Martha A. Mangers

Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999

Hastings resident Martha Ann (Beiriger) Mangers, 92, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Villa Grace.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Friday and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Mangers was born Jan. 3, 1907, to J.L. and Elizabeth (Seyler) Beiriger in Juniata. On Jan. 23, 1934, she married Ervin J. Mangers in Assumption. She moved from a farm near Roseland to Hastings in 1959. On June 17, her husband died.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and its Altar Society.

Survivors are one son, Marvin Mangers of Minden; two daughters, Vonnie Lee of Grand Island and Betty Smidt of Pauline; one sister, Amelia Willmes of Kenesaw; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Ervin Jr.; and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.

Zella Kudrna

Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999

Red Cloud resident Zella (Lambrecht) Kudrna, 78, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.

Mrs. Kudrna was born Oct. 13, 1921, to Theodore and Maude (Palmer) Lambrecht in Inavale. She attended New Virginia School in Webster County and Red Cloud High School. On Dec. 16, 1939, she married Kenneth L. Kudrna in Red Cloud. They farmed near Red Cloud until 1983 when they moved into town. On July 19, 1994, her husband died.

Survivors are three sons, Ron and Rick, both of Red Cloud, and Roger of Columbus; one daughter, Randi Vance of Ankeny, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one sister.

Romaine D. Wilken

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999

Former Franklin County resident Romaine Dietrick Wilken, 67, of Ravenna died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery south of Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Wilken was born March 20, 1932, to Diedrick and Maria (Adam) Wilken in Upland. He lived south of Hildreth with his parents and later moved to Kearney. He then moved to Ravenna. His guardians were Elroy and Phyllis Lierman of Kearney.

Survivors are four sisters, Margaret Andersen of Portland, Ore., Frieda Hemmen of Clarenda, Iowa, Lucella Marten of Rockford, Ill., and Lillian Cronin of Grand Island; and one brother, Richard of Springfield, Mo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Gordon J. Krull

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999

Red Cloud resident Gordon J. Krull, 64, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.

Mr. Krull was born March 1, 1935, to John and Emma (Munson) Krull in Blue Earth, Minn. He attended school in Grand Meadow, Minn. From 1952-56 he served in the U.S. Navy. He then lived in Spring Valley, Minn., where he worked for Libby Food Co. He later moved to Minneapolis where he owned and operated the Great North Trading Post. On Feb. 14, 1966, he married Eileen Meyer. They moved to Red Cloud in 1980. He was a sales representative with Smith Manufacturing and was a custodian at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud for several years. He then worked for Morrison Motors in Hastings as a mechanic. He retired in 1995.

Survivors are one daughter, Laura Wescoat of Red Cloud; two brothers, Harold of Blain, Minn., and Clarence of Elkton, Minn.; one sister, June Gordon of Rochester, Minn.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Paul; two brothers; and one sister.

Ronald L. Burnham

Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Former Hastings resident Ronald Lee Burnham, 65, of Gordon, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Graveside services were Tuesday at Gordon Cemetery with the Rev. Vonne Blessman Andersen officiating and military rites provided by the Fred F. Sturdevant Post No. 34. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home of Gordon was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burnham was born Jan. 22, 1934, to Clarence and Leona Burnham in Hastings. He attended school in Hastings and Minden. He later served in the U.S. Army for two years in Germany. He moved to Gordon, where he was a rancher. He then worked as a diesel mechanic at Modern Farm Equipment for 23 years in Gordon.

He was a member of the Gordon American Legion Post, the DAV and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors are one daughter, Lori Gordon of Big Valley, Alberta, Canada; one son, Wayne of Bremerton, Wash.; three brothers, Paul of Arvada, Colo., Bill of Hastings and Chuck of Red Cloud; two sisters, Dorothy Ennis of Marysville, Calif., and Dolores Marquardt of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Fred F. Sturdevant American Legion Post in Gordon. Donations may be sent to the First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343.

Kerry E. 'Bear' Elliott

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999

Elwood resident Kerry E. "Bear" Elliott, 52, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, as the result of injuries he received from a train accident while at work in Juniata.

Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Elwood with the Rev. Herman Trauernicht officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Elwood Cemetery. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elliott worked in the area through Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. He married former Fairfield resident Rebecca "Becky" Bridgway.

Ruth C. Reninger

Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999

Former Hastings resident Ruth C. (Helgesen) Reninger, 92, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Reninger was born March 7, 1907, to Christian and Minnie Helga (Solvsberg) Helgesen in Sioux City, Iowa. On May 29, 1938, she married Leonard Reninger. She was a school teacher for 20 years. On March 28, 1980, her husband died.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Women. She was a past member of Village Garden Club. She also was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors are two daughters, Carolyn Eness of Iowa Falls and Eulyn Frostestad of West Branch, Iowa; one sister, Gladys Butler of Manson, Iowa; one brother, Donald of Chicago; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Dean, and eight siblings.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Laura M. Phillips

Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000

Hastings resident Laura Marie (Kull) Phillips, 93, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Villa Grace.

Services were 10 a.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. today at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating.

Mrs. Phillips was born June 4, 1906, to Fred and Anna (Kruger) Kull in Scribner. On Feb. 14, 1928, she married Clinton Phillips in Wahoo. They moved from Fremont to Hastings in 1943. She worked as a sales clerk at Bert's Pharmacy in Hastings for 30 years. In 1975 her husband died.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two sons, Duane of Bellevue and Larry of Hastings; two sisters, Magdaline Kienbaum of Salinas, Calif., and Norma Petersen of Fremont; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to Villa Grace.

Hubert A. Kimminau

Lawrence resident Hubert A. Kimminau, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are pending with Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill.

John K. Bassett

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000

Former Hastings resident John K. Bassett, 75, of LaPorte, Colo., died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Fort Collins, Colo.

Prayer services are 7 p.m. Monday at Allnutt Funeral Service in Fort Collins. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Bassett was born Oct. 27, 1924, to Arthur Louis and Gladys (Rynearson) Bassett in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1942. On Oct. 9, 1946, he married Frances Shofner in Clovis, N.M. He was a colonel and command pilot with the U.S. Air Force for 31 years. In 1960 he received a business degree from Long Island University. He moved from Altus, Okla., to LaPorte in 1974.

He was a member of the Retired Air Force Association.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, John Jr. and Joseph, both of Boothbay, Maine, and Patrick of Golden, Colo.; one daughter, Colleen Bassett of NaVarro, Calif.; five brothers, Vern, Harold and Howard, all of Hastings, Robert of Santaynez, Calif., and Donald of Ridgecrest, Calif.; two sisters, Dorese Willis of Rupert, Idaho, and Mary Mazur of New Hampshire; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.

Mary A. Hamersky

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000

Former Deweese resident Mary A. (Maixner) Hamersky, 95, of Lincoln died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Lincoln.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Sunday at Butherus Maser and Love Funeral Home chapel in Lincoln. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Joseph Nemec officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hamersky was born May 8, 1904, to Fred and Marie (Cecava) Maixner in Deweese.

Survivors are two sons, Albert and Miroslav "Joe," both of Lincoln; one daughter, Veronica Milburn of Lincoln; one sister, Stella Kucera of Hastings; one brother, Albert of Deweese; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; one son, Alfons; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Marian Sisters.

Gary L. Doyen

Saturday, April 22, 2000

Hastings resident Gary L. Doyen, 58, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the North Shore Assembly of God Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Solomon Wang and the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Doyen was born May 2, 1941, to Alfred and Geraldine (King) Doyen in Adams County. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. On Sept. 20, 1961, he married Harriet Mae Sandage. She died June 26, 1989. On April 6, 1991, he married Dee (Hock) Spielman. He worked for Deutch Fastener in Torrance, Calif., for 25 years. He retired in 1989 and moved to Hastings.

He was a member of the North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Tamie Smith of Kenesaw and Lisa Doyen of Hastings; two stepdaughters, Brenda Conway of Denver and Jody Ellison of Hastings; four stepsons, Gregg Freeman of Las Vegas, LeRoy Doyen of Arizona and Tony Pittman and Todd Spielman, both of Hastings; two sisters, Gloria Hunter of Lincoln and Linda Smith of Ewing; and three brothers, Chuck Doyen and Kevin Kreinheder, both of Hastings, and Kenny Kreinheder of Holland, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

William S. Holly

Saturday, April 22, 2000

Franklin resident William S. Holly, 76, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at University Hospital in Omaha.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Franklin with the Rev. Dwain Fowler officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Holly was born June 4, 1923, to Espus and Dorcas (Wells) Holly near Fairbury. He graduated from Daykin High School and attended Fairbury College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Aug. 10, 1962, he married Arlene Versaw in Elko, Nev. He was a grand lodge representative for the Machinist Union in California and retired in 1983. He moved to Bloomington and later to Franklin. On June 18, 1992, his wife died.

He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, American Legion Post No. 145, Paul Hartt of Bloomington, I.A.M. Union, and Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 264. He also was on the board of directors of Franklin Information Technology.

Survivors are three sons, Jim Kemplin of Omaha, William Holly Jr. of New Whiteland, Ind., and David Holly of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Connie Jo Gardner of Tacoma, Wash., and Carman Westbrock of Rolla, Mo.; one brother, Tommy of Pensacola, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Frances Leonard of Perth, Australia, Jackie Kloac of Lillian, Ala., and Beverly Jones of Pensacola; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
