Edward Mammen

Monday, May 1, 2000

Hebron resident Edward Mammen, 67, died Monday, May 1, 2000, in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning with the Rev. Vern Barlow officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There is no visitation. The remains were cremated. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mammen was born July 30, 1932, to George and Helena (Ortgies) Mammen in rural Hebron. He graduated from Bruning High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired farmer in the Bruning area.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Durham Mammen American Legion Post No. 166 in Bruning.

Survivors are three brothers, Delbert of Eatontown, N.J., Donald of Western and Wilber of Hebron.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday School class, 300 E. Main, Bruning, NE 68322.

Paul J. Johnson

Jan. 4, 2000

Memorial services for former Hastings resident Paul Jasper Johnson, 77, of Bella Vista, Ark., who died Jan. 4, 2000, in Springdale, Ark., are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah with the Revs. Harun Gatobu and Charles H. Gates officiating. Burial will be in the Tekamah Cemetery. Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home of Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Paul E. Schneider

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Sutton resident Paul E. Schneider, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Sutton American Legion Post No. 61. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schneider was born May 4, 1913, to Emil and Barbara (Maser) Schneider in Sutton. He attended Cottage School in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1930. On Aug. 16, 1941, he married Dorothy Darlene Johnson in Central City. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 202nd Field Artillery Group during World War II in the European Theater. He then returned to farm near Sutton until 1979 when he moved into Sutton. On Feb. 15, 1996, his wife died.

He was a member of the Federated Church, Argonne American Legion Post No. 61 of Sutton, VFW of Geneva and Clay County 40 & 8 Voiture No. 675. He was also a recipient of the Bronze Star.

Survivors are one daughter, Paula Bergen of Sutton; and two grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a sister.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Byron Y. Arnold

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Former Hastings resident Byron Y. Arnold, 74, of San Diego died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at his home.

The remains were cremated. Private family burial will be at a later date at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Clairmont Mortuary of San Diego is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arnold was born Feb. 16, 1925, to James and Alda (Burroughs) Arnold in Red Cloud. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1943 and from Hastings College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Maritime Service and the U.S. Army Paratroopers during World War II. He then taught at Hastings Junior and Senior high schools and at Mission Bay High School in San Diego.

Survivors are three sisters, Jean Koch of Hastings, Gwen Hickins of San Diego and Lucille Ulman of Hemet, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Glenn F. Knapple

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000

Lexington resident Glenn F. Knapple, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington with the Revs. Todd Karges and Ralph Guetersloh officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, including Fred of Hastings; one daughter; one sister; and six grandchildren.

Charles Schuck

Friday, Feb. 4, 2000

Hastings resident Charles Schuck, 73, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died today at Perkins Pavilion.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Betsy A. Oline

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000

Former Hastings resident Betsy A. (McCollum) Oline, 70, of Axtell died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell with the Rev. David Evenson officiating. Burial is 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.

Mrs. Oline was born June 13, 1929, to John and Lota (Sears) McCollum in Brentwood, Texas. She graduated from Brentwood High School in 1946. On Sept. 9, 1949, she married Mervin Wilshisen. They lived in Hastings for 33 years where she worked for J.M. McDonald for 14 years. In 1983 her husband died. On May 30, 1985, she married Herbert Oline. They lived in Axtell and wintered in Arizona for several years.

She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Debra Wissing of Grand Island; three stepdaughters, Ardyce Shaffer of Henrietta, N.Y., Nancy Anderson of Republican City and Margie Nelson of Axtell; three grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice, Bethany Lutheran Church or the Bethany Home.

Duane D. Newbold

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Minden resident Duane David Newbold, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Ronald Ebb officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Newbold was born July 17, 1923, to Warren David and Emma Lorraine (Bloomfield) Newbold near Minden. He graduated from Minden High School in 1941. On April 10, 1947, he married Minna Thomsen. They farmed and were milk producers near Minden for many years.

He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church board, the American Dairy Association Dairy Breeders board, School District 25 board, Liberty Township Cemetery board, Kearney County Democratic Party, NRPD board and a charter member of the Minden Gun Club. He was president of the Kearney County Historical Society and past president of the Danish Brotherhood and American Dairy Association. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 127 in Minden. He was also a past chairman of the Fort Kearny Preservation, Restoration and Development Board.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Grant of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Gina Newbold-Crosby of Kearney, Gail Deyle of Omaha and Dee Ann Newbold of Austin, Texas; one brother, Vernon of Hershey, Pa.; two sisters, Mildred Muller of New Ulm, Minn., and Roxie Brown Marsh of Minden; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ward, two brothers and one sister.

Rex W. Songster

Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000

Former Hastings resident Rex Wilmer Songster, 74, of Hemet, Calif., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. The remains were cremated. Miller-Jones Mortuary and Crematory of Hemet is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Songster was born Nov. 3, 1925, to Harry and Buda (Horton) Songster in Fairmont. He was raised in Hastings and attended school there. From 1943-46 he served in the U.S. Navy. He married L. Lou Ruth. He was a self-employed painting contractor for 15 years.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Dan of Lake Forest, Calif., Randall of Grants Pass, Ore., and Thomas of North Canton, Ohio; one stepson, Kenneth Moore of North Richland Hills, Texas; three brothers, Bob and Harry, both of Hastings and Leonard of Concord, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, 601 N. Kirby St., Space 4014, Hemet, CA 92545.

Marvin A. Elifritz

Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000

Edgar resident Marvin A. Elifritz, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

Mr. Elifritz was born Sept. 3, 1913, to Zeney and Marnishia (Cox) Elifritz in Edgar. He attended school in Edgar. He married Iona Skinner. They farmed near Edgar.

He was a member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Virginia Johnson of Buffalo, Minn., and Doris Lux of Columbus; one sister, Evelyn Arnold of Palo Alta, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Ethel E. Sparks

Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000

Former Bloomington resident Ethel E. (Jacobs) Sparks, 73, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at a later date. The remains were cremated. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sparks was born May 7, 1926, to Marion V. and Elnera M. (Kersting) Jacobs in Bloomington. She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1944. On April 2, 1947, she married Raymond H. Sparks in Smith Center, Kan. They moved to Colorado in 1949 and lived in Estes Park, Eaglewood, Berthoud, Loveland and Fort Collins in Colorado. She retired in 1989 from Hewlett-Packard in Loveland. She returned to Nebraska in 1990 and spent time in Bloomington, Fort Collins and Grand Island. Her husband died in 1990.

Survivors are one son, Richard R. of Fort Collins; one sister, Marjorie Haubold of Grand Island; one grandchild; and one stepgrandchild.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Carl W. Thompson

Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000

Former Minden resident Carl W. Thompson, 90, of Sutherland, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 at the Sutherland Nursing Home Integrated Health Services.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson was born March 15, 1909, to Otto and Mary Thompson in Minden. He grew up in the Kearney County and Phelps County areas. On June 10, 1931, he married Agnes Bartlett. They lived in Minden where he worked as a cattle buyer. He also purchased and remodeled homes in Minden and Hastings. In 1981 his wife died and he moved to Kearney. He moved to North Platte in 1996 and then to Sutherland in 1999.

Survivors are one daughter, Betty Glebe of North Platte; one son, Roger of Kearney; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.

Raymond F. 'Bud' Schendt

Friday, July 30, 1999

Lawrence resident Raymond F. "Bud" Schendt, 69, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services were to be this morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence with the Revs. Dennis Hunt and Alex Okoro officiating. Burial with military rites by the Kent Kailey American Legion Post No. 45 of Lawrence was to be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schendt was born Sept. 22, 1929, to Theodore "Ted" and Minnie (Ostdiek) Schendt in Nuckolls County. On Sept. 4, 1951, he married Eleanor N. Hofstetter in Lawrence. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 during the Korean War and was wounded in action near Soho-dong, North Korea. He received the Purple Heart. He farmed until 1986 and moved to Lawrence in 1989.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Kent Kailey American Legion Post No. 45, VFW Post No. 10045 of Deweese and the Knights of Columbus of Lawrence.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Steven of Lawrence, Patrick of Broken Bow, Ronald of Nelson and Arnold of Hastings; six daughters, Mary Gengenbach of Eustis, JoAnn Hoch of Culbertson, Laura Blackford of Juniata, Marilyn Hubl of Blue Hill, Rose Blackford of New Virginia, Iowa, and Donna Mazour of Lawrence; two brothers, William of Lawrence and Bernard of Grandview, Mo.; three sisters, Marie James of Arizona, Geraldine Ostdiek of Superior and Catherine Yakus of Omaha; and 29 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Arleen, and one brother.

Memorials have been established.
