Wesley R. Mohlman

Hastings resident Wesley R. Mohlman, 71, of 103 E. 13th St., died Sunday, August 1, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Greater Nebraska Health Care System in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with military and Masonic services by MidWest Lodge No. 317.
Mr. Mohlman was born June 7, 1928, to Anton and Katherine (Parks) Mohlman in Spring Ranch. On Nov. 6, 1949, he married Jane Willard in Lexington, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. He farmed near Spring Ranch until 1965 when he moved to Hastings. He was owner of Hastings Construction from 1972-85.
He was a member of the Midwest Lodge No. 317 and a past mason of Fairfield Masonic Lodge. He also was a Shrine Clown for 10 years.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Melanie Spady of Alma; four sons, Stewart, Wes Jr. and Larry, all of Hastings and Bryan of Slatington, Pa.; one sister, Betty Uden of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Kenneth of San Gabriel, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Memorials have been established.
Norris E. Scott

Fairfield resident Norris E. Scott, 69, died Friday, July 30, 1999, in Kearney.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Shepherd of the Plains Church in Fairfield with the Rev. William Larson officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell. Wetzel Funeral Home of Curtis is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Scott was born Dec. 17, 1929, to Raymond and Dora (Glinsmann) Scott in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth; one daughter, Charlotte Jobman of Gothenburg; one son, Randy of Fairfield; one brother, Raymond of Sterling, Colo.; and two grandchildren.
Herbert C. Brettmann

Deshler resident Herbert Carl Brettmann, 84, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, in Deshler.
Services were at to be today at the Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Phillip Nielsen officiating. Burial was in the Deshler City Cemetery. Ahrendts Funeral Home of Deshler was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brettmann was born Oct. 8, 1914, to Herman and Emma (Vorderstrasse) Brettmann near Deshler. He attended grade school at District 69 and Peace Lutheran Parochial School, in the Deshler area. He also attended Hebron Academy for two years before graduating from Deshler High School in 1934. He managed the Deshler city baseball teams and served as an announcer for the Deshler High School football games for more than 25 years. On April 30, 1938, he married Mildred Molly Buresh at Peace Lutheran Church parsonage in Deshler. He and his wife farmed southeast of Deshler for many years. In 1946 they moved into Deshler where he began his career as an auctioneer and livestock broker at the Deshler Sale Barn. He also earned his real estate broker and appraisal licenses. He was an agent and board member of the Farmer's Mutual Insurance Co. of Thayer County for more than 30 years. His wife later died.
He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, the Federal Land Bank board, the Nebraska Auctioneers Association, the National Association of Auctioneers and the Izaak Walton League, all in Deshler. He also served on the Peace Lutheran Parochial School Board of Education, the Deshler City Council and the Deshler Housing Authority Board.
Survivors are two daughters, Diane Bartling and Beverly Pitts, both of Deshler; two brothers, Alvin of Deshler and Paul of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been established.
Marvin J. Cody

Minden resident Marvin J. Cody, 45, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Graveside services were to be 11 a.m. today at the Minden Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cody was born Feb. 18, 1954, to Ambrose and Mary (Wind) Cody in Duluth, Minn. He grew up in Duluth. In 1993 he moved to Minden.
Survivors are his wife, Pam; four sons, Brian of Minden and Dallas, Shawn and Phillip, all of Duluth; one daughter, Lisa Cody of Duluth; his mother of Cloquet, Minn.; and two brothers, Vince of Duluth and Curt of Aurora, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his father.
An educational memorial fund has been established at the Platte Valley State Bank in Kearney for his son, Brian.
Merrell M. Watson

Former Esbon, Kan., resident Merrell M. Watson, 89, of Ionia, Kan., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kan.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kan. Burial will be in the Odessa Cemetery near Lebanon, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Watson was born March 14, 1910, to Mary Watson in Esbon, Kan. He lived his whole life in Jewell County, Kan. On Nov. 8, 1937, he married Julia Houghtelling. They later divorced. On Aug. 21, 1963, he married Ann Fields in Phillipsburg, Kan. He was employed as a section hand by Rock Island Railroad for 29 years. His wife later died.
Survivors are five sons, Merle Watson of Texas, Fredrick Brumbaugh of St. Mary's, Ga., Daniel Brumbaugh of Belpre, Ohio, Thomas Tegley of Lincoln and Marvin Tracas of Miles City, Mont.; and one daughter, Rosalee Tegley of Rockville, Ind.
He also was preceded in death by one son, David.
Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
Paul R. Pierce

Hastings resident Paul R. Pierce, 86, of 518 Oswego Ave., died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Pierce was born March 17, 1913, to Albert Wesley and Ivy May (Auble) Pierce in Ord. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture in 1935. In 1937 he married Helen Uridel. He taught Smith-Hughes Vocational Agriculture for 12 years before developing his own insurance and farm management business, Pierce Agricultural Service in Hastings.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Hastings Lodge No. 50 and served as worshipful master in 1954, grand master of Nebraska in 1982 and later grand secretary. He received the 33rd degree in the Scottish Rite in 1963, was presiding officer in all four Hastings Scottish Rite Bodies, secretary of the Hastings Masonic Temple Board Association for 30 years, and was the personal representative of the sovereign grand inspector general. He was also secretary of the Hastings Masonic Temple Board Association for 30 years. He initiated the Teacher of the Year Award and helped establish the Aphasia Program in Hastings. He served on the ritualistic degree team and as chaplain of the Tehama Temple Shrine Service. He was presiding officer in all three local York Rite bodies and was a prior of Sir Galahad Priory of Nebraska. He is a former Rotarian and past president of the Rotary.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Kay Muhs of Plano, Texas; one brother, Hal of Ord; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Mills Memorial Library of the United Methodist Church or the Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders.

Blue Hill resident Andrew Rose, 87, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at the Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill with the Rev. Jim Witt officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery north of Blue Hill. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rose was born Aug. 1, 1911, to George and Dora (Hublein) Rose near Rosemont. He attended school in Rosemont. On Sept. 12, 1939, he married Evelyn A. Meyer in Blue Hill. He worked as an independent truck driver. He also had worked at the Blue Hill Elevator, the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot and as a machinist at Dutton-Lainson Co. in Hastings.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Elaine Southerland of Antioch, Calif.; three sons, Neil and Al, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bob of Grandview, Mo.; one sister, Druella Hohnstein of Hastings; one brother, Ernest of Fort Collins, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Franklin resident Leland "Jim" Lipp, 70, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services were to be 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Franklin with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating. Burial was to be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lipp was born May 17, 1929, to Henry and Etta (Mosbarger) Lipp in Franklin County. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1946. From 1949-1951, he served in the U.S. Army. On July 11, 1951, he married Clarice Merager in Island View, Wash. He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Franklin, B.P.O. Elks of Madison, S.D., and the American Legion in Riverton.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Leland "Lanni" Jr. of Kearney; two daughters, Deborah Stuckenschmidt of Greeley, Colo., and Teresa "Terri" Post of Naponee; four sisters, Vera Blank and Velma Siel, both of Franklin, Irma Kleen of Englewood, Colo., and Lela Steinkruger of Lincoln; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter and three brothers.

Hastings resident Clara E. (Price) Sconce, 92, of 1207 N. Burlington Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Arthur Schakat officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sconce was born Dec. 15, 1906, to Orval and Mabel (Cook) Price in Deweese. On June 7, 1930, she married Buell B. "Abe" Sconce. She worked for Ben Sherman Clothing in Hastings for 24 years. She was a foster grandparent for handicapped children for 13 years. In 1953, her husband died.
She was a member of the GSV All Saints Chapel.
Survivors are two sisters, Ora Schendt of Hastings and Pauline Martin of Woodberry, Minn.; and two brothers, Willard of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Ervin of Edgar.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the GSV All Saints Chapel in Hastings.
Beverly J. Monson

Former Hastings resident Beverly Jean (Bierman) Monson, 75, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Heather Manor in Des Moines.
Services are 9 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Monson was born July 12, 1924, to Harry and Jessie Bierman in Hastings. She married Raymond Monson. He preceded her in death. She lived in Chicago for 25 years and in Hastings for 21 years before moving to Des Moines. She was a retired bookkeeper.
Survivors are two sons, Alan of Springfield, Ill., and Larry of Des Moines; one sister, Darlene Mills of Kearney; and four grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
