Ulala Madsen, 75
SENECA - Ulala Fern "Ukie" Madsen, 75, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Alliance.
She was born April 7, 1930, near Seneca to Seth and Fern (Stevensen) Hanna.
Ukie grew up in the Sandhills and graduated from Mullen High School in 1947. She was married to Lawrence Madsen at Valentine on Feb. 11, 1950.
She was a former member of the Does drove, a member of the Sunshine Chapter No. 261 Eastern Star of Thedford, and the United Church of Christ of Seneca.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday, Oct. 21, at the Seneca Auditorium, with Rev. Linda Martin officiating.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.MDT at the Mullen Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the United Christian Church at Seneca. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Janice W. Abbott, 60
ALLIANCE - Janice W. Abbott, 60, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 22, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., to John Henry and Pauline (Marusa) Warren.
Janice married Thomas H. Abbott on Nov. 21, 1964, in Wilmington. To this union three children, Thomas, Matthew and Shannon, were born. Janice and her family moved to Alliance in July 1977.
She was working as a librarian assistant for Alliance High School at the time of her death.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Alliance Berean Church with Pastor Dave Wilson officiating.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the Alliance Berean Church building fund.

Delbert Grothen, 81
ALLIANCE - Delbert Marvin Grothen, 81, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Box Butte General Hospital after an extended illness.
Delbert was born at home on July 1, 1924, in Ottertail County, Minnesota, the oldest child of Olga Dora Marie (Jantzen) and Theodore Grothen. Delbert's early years were spent on the small family dairy farm near the village of Parkers Prairie, Minnesota.
He graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1943. Following graduation he worked for several farmers around Parkers Prairie. In 1944 Delbert enlisted in the Merchant Marine as a radio telegraph operator. After basic training and radio school in Boston he was assigned to a ship and sailed to Gydnia, Poland.
Delbert met the love of his life, Marion Jane Anderson in December 1949, on a blind date. They were married on June 16, 1950 in Arlington Heights, Illinois and made their first home in Burlington.
To this union three children were born. The family was devoted to church life, education, music, family travels around the U.S., and community development activities.
Delbert was known for his knack for fixing and building things. He built the family's home in Alliance, while working full-time evenings and helping with childcare. He spent countless hours maintaining, painting, and fixing property at home, for the church, and for other family members.
At Delbert's request, cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Delbert's life will be held in his memory at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance with inurnment in the St. John's Memorial Columbarium Garden.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be sent to Good Samaritan Health Care Center for their six years of caring and devotion to Delbert and Marion; the Sallows Military Museum; or the High Plains Veterans Cemetery Fund.
Hildegarde Donovan, 91
ALLIANCE - Hildegarde "Tillie" Donovan, 91, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.
She was born Jan. 18, 1914, at Sheboygan, Wis., to Gottfried and Emily (Axtel) Mertz. Tillie came to Alliance in 1915 to live with her brother.
On May 7, 1932, she was united in marriage to Willard Donovan. Tillie retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company after 30 years of service.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bill Buschbom officiating.
Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center, Nebraska Boys Ranch or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Jean Wells, 77
BRIDGEPORT - Mary Jean Wells, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at the Heritage of Bridgeport.
Jean was born Aug. 8, 1928, at Alliance, the daughter of John Nells and Mary Lois (Battles) Person. She was raised and educated in the Hemingford and Alliance area.
Jean was united in marriage to Orville W. Wells, Jr., Nov. 16, 1947, at Alliance. While Orville worked for the railroad, they lived in numerous communities until his retirement.
They moved to Bridgeport in January of 1982. She was a member of the First Methodist Church at Bayard and Court House and Jail Rock Golf Club at Bridgeport.
At her request, cremation has been held at the Jolliffe Funeral Home Crematory at Scottsbluff. Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Eldin Wells and Juan Espinoza officiating.
Inurnment will be in Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery at Bridgeport.

Mildred Schwindt, 77
LINCOLN - Mildred Irene Schwindt, 77, passed away Wednesday Nov. 23, 2005, at Tabitha Hospice Unit with her loving family surrounding her.
She was born to Charlie and Hazel (Ilgenfritz) Johannsen on Dec. 31, 1927, at Alliance.
Millie worked as an LPN most of her life.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Gates of Praise Assembly of God Church, 70th and Vine Sts., with Pastor John Morrow officiating.
Luncheon to follow service at the church. There will be a private family inurnment at Fairview Cemetery.

Annie I. Kerns, 102
ALLIANCE - Annie Irene Kerns, 102, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff.
She was born May 17, 1903, at Hastings, to Henry and Hilda Annette (Tjaden) Reinders.
On Aug. 2, 1924, she was united in marriage to Elmer James Kerns at Tryon. They moved to Alliance in 1927.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev.Troy Allen officiating.
Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Gale Knight Powles, 86
RAPID CITY, S.D. - Gale Knight Powles died Nov. 14, at Rapid City.
He was born Oct. 21, 1919, in the Sandhills near Bingham, from Ernest and Faye Powles. Gale grew up on the family ranch near Bingham, and attended and graduated from Alliance High School in 1937.
After graduating, he worked for J.C. Penney and J.B. Murphy at Alliance. In 1940, he married Stella Marie Milburn. They had two children.
Gayle was working for McDonald Douglas in California when he was called to duty and joined the U.S. Navy. He returned a year later and they moved to Scottsbluff where he worked for George Milburn's Music Store.
His memorial service was Thursday, Nov. 17, at Grace United Methodist Church at Piedmont, with interment at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to Grace United Methodist Church at Piedmont.
Frank Y. Nagaki, 82
ALLIANCE - Frank Yoshio Nagaki, 82, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at his home.
Frank was born May 14, 1923, at Scottsbluff, to Minosuke and Shige (Kato) Nagaki.
He grew up at Minatare, receiving his education there and graduating from Minatare High School in 1940. He farmed with his family at Minatare until 1947, when he moved to Alliance.
He married Mary M. Shiba on Dec. 19, 1947, at Scottsbluff. Frank has farmed with his brothers in the Alliance area since.
Memorial Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff, with Rev. Carol Ann Bullard officiating.
Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery at Scottsbluff.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
