Services for Blue Hill resident Marjorie P. Fish, 87, who died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Blue Hill Care Center are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Blue Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Oliver C. Schliep

Tuesday, July 13, 1999

Clay Center resident Oliver C. Schliep, 96, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Edgar.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center with the Rev. Jack Eske officiating. Burial will be in the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schliep was born March 12, 1903, to Henry and Esther (Hunnicutt) Schliep in Ault, Colo. On April 29, 1931, he married Clara Hinrichs in Glenvil. They lived in Lead, S.D., while he worked at Homestake Gold Mine in Lead. In 1940 they moved to a farm near Clay Center. In 1959 he retired from farming. In 1997 he moved to the Integrated Health Services in Edgar.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Ardis Olson of Lincoln and Eileen Ethington of Atlanta; two sons, Wesley and Duane, both of Clay Center; two sisters, Fern Hinrichs of San Diego and Hazel Groff of Boise, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Memorials may be given to the family or the donor's choice.

Kenneth R. Skidmore

Saturday, July 10, 1999

Hastings resident Kenneth R. Skidmore, 46, of 74 Kingston Drive, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Click Funeral Home chapel in Lenoir City, Tenn., with the Revs. George Seay and Sam Petty officiating. Burial will be in Dogwood Cemetery in Lenoir City. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Skidmore was born Sept. 16, 1952, to Fred and May Skidmore in Lenoir City. He was employed by Chief Ethanol Fuels Inc. in Hastings at the time of his death.

Survivors are one daughter, Angie Skidmore of Lenoir City; his mother of Lenoir City; four sisters, Laura Latham, Diane Vineyard and Ernistine Hughes, all of Lenoir City, and Shirley Franklin of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two brothers, Ricky Skidmore and Steve Spoon, both of Lenoir City.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Warren A. Aakre

Monday, July 12, 1999

Holmen, Wis., resident Warren A. Aakre, 50, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Gundersen/Lutheran Medical Center in Holmen.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Holmen with the Rev. Timothy Duesenberg officiating. The remains will be cremated. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home in Holmen and 1 p.m. until services Friday at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa McClure, formerly of Hastings; two daughters; one son; one sister; and one brother.

Bessie M. Harris

Monday, July 12, 1999

Red Cloud resident Bessie M. (Martin) Ecker Harris, 86, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Ken Hansen officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Mrs. Harris was born June 26, 1913, to Arthur G. and Hettie (Pegg) Martin in Riverton. She attended Riverton schools and graduated from Fairview School in Smith County, Kan. She later married Harvey Ecker. They lived in Red Cloud, Riverton and then Mankato, Kan. where they divorced. In the 1930s she moved to Salina, Kan., where she operated a cafe. In 1942 she married Max Harris. They lived in Junction City, Kan., Japan and Hanover, Md. Her husband died in 1977. In 1998 she moved to Red Cloud.

She was a member of the Jessup, Md., VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors are two sons, Norman Ecker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Allen Harris of Hanover, Md.; one sister, Hazel Henderson of Red Cloud; four brothers, Edgar and Vernon, both of Red Cloud, Paul of Spur, Texas, and Gerald of Simpson, Kan.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, one sister and four brothers.

Ann M. Griess

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000

Sutton resident Ann M. (Huber) Griess, 56, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hope Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. George Horner officiating. Burial will be in Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Griess was born Aug. 27, 1943, to Ben and June (Helzer) Huber near Sutton. She attended Grafton Elementary and Sutton High School. On Oct. 25, 1962, she married Ewald H. Griess in Fillmore County. They lived and farmed north of Sutton until 1988 when they moved to town. She helped on the farm, helped her sister at the Sutton Locker Plant and volunteered at the nursing home in Sutton. She later worked full-time at the nursing home.

She was a member of Hope Reformed Church and its Ladies' Aid. She also was a member of the Sutton American Legion Auxiliary, and chairwoman of the Red Cross Bloodmobile in Sutton for many years.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Sharon Worman of Harvard; two sons, Dennis of Sutton and Wendell of Hastings; her parents of Grafton; one sister, Suzann Griess of Sutton; three brothers, David of Sutton and Theophil and Loraine, both of Grafton; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Memorials may be given to the Sutton Community Home.

Jack V. Sell

Friday, Feb. 18, 2000

Chester resident Jack V. Sell, 77, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Central Christian Church in Belleville, Kan., with the Rev. Robert Hovorka officiating. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery at Chester. Visitation is until 9:30 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Belleville.

Mr. Sell was born Oct. 19, 1922, to John and Vera (Walker) Sell at Hebron. He was a longtime Chester resident.

He was a member of Central Christian Church of Belleville.

Survivor is one sister, Donna Burroughs of Richland, Wash.

James F. Kraus

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000

Hastings resident James F. Kraus, 78, of 721 S. First Ave. No. 118, Good Samaritan Village Goldbeck Towers, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Graveside services with military rites will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. There will be no public visitation or viewing.

Mr. Kraus was born Oct. 10, 1921, to Arthur W. and Katherine (Cunningham) Kraus in Eddyville. He graduated from Eddyville High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Dec. 16, 1950, he married Laura DuBreuil. He worked for Monroe Auto Equipment in Cozad and hay mills in the Lexington area. He moved to Hastings three years ago from Lexington.

He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Nancy Yurk of Hastings; two sisters, Lelia McLean and Zelma Burke, both of Omaha; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Melvin V. Morris

Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000

Former Hebron resident Melvin Virgil Morris, 79, of Great Bend, Kan., died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

Services were Friday at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hebron.

Mr. Morris was born Dec. 10, 1920, to Austin and Ethel (Sharp) Morris near Belleville, Kan. He graduated from Hebron High School and attended Hebron Academy for two years. On Dec. 7, 1952, he married Bettyann Kassebaum in Hebron. They farmed in the Belvidere and Hebron areas before moving to Great Bend. He worked for the Rural Electrical Association for 18 years. He received certification in refrigeration at Barton County Community College in Great Bend and became self-employed in appliance repair. His wife died in 1989. He entered a Great Bend nursing home in 1996.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

Survivors are one son, Melvin E. of McPherson, Kan.; three daughters, Vicki Morris of Genesco, Kan., Linda Fangmeier of Hubbell and Nancy Seifers of Ellenwood, Kan.; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Olive L. Railsback

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000

Mankato, Kan., resident Olive L. (Rarick) Railsback, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Mitchell County Community Hospital in Beloit, Kan.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Ionia Cemetery at Ionia, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Mrs. Railsback was born Dec. 29, 1909, to Charles and Elvira (Taylor) Rarick on a farm near Glen Elder, Kan. She married Joe Albert Railsback. The couple farmed. He died Feb. 22, 1986.

Survivors include four sons, Frank of Mankato, Robert of Lyndon, Kan., Willard of Colby, Kan., and John of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Opal Dedic of Pine City, Minn.; a brother, Roy Rarick of Pine City; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Bertha C. Avery

Monday, Feb. 21, 2000

Franklin resident Bertha C. (Hecht) Avery, 95, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Larry Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Naponee Cemetery at Naponee. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday.

Mrs. Avery was born April 18, 1904, to Herman and Caroline Hecht in Phillips County, Kan. She attended School District No. 42 southeast of Republican City. She married Glen P. Avery on April 19, 1922, in Phillipsburg, Kan. They lived on a farm in Phillips County, Kan. In 1963 they moved to Franklin. She worked at the Franklin Nursing Center for eight years. She then worked at the Corner Cafe in Franklin until she retired. Her husband died May 19, 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin of Kearney and Phillip of Green Leaf, Kan.; two daughters, Helen Hunt of Franklin and Doris Hunt of Imperial; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, five sisters, one grandson and two great-granddaughters.

Phyllis E. Darling

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000

Superior resident Phyllis E. (Patton) Darling, 67, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Superior. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Darling was born April 13, 1932, to Eugene "Red" and Ada (Powers) Patton at Republic, Kan. She graduated from Concordia, (Kan.) High School in 1950. In 1951, she moved to Superior and worked at Armour's Creamery for two years. On July 18, 1953, she married Max Darling in Nelson. They lived in the Superior area.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary for more than 40 years.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Ragene of Logan, Iowa; one daughter, Candy Dewey of Dumas, Texas; her mother of Superior; one sister, Dixie Whitney of Superior; one brother, Jim of Norwalk, Calif; three grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Twila A. Beyer

Monday, Feb. 21, 2000

Kearney resident Twila A. (Mackrill) Beyer, 74, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Rev. Charles Torpey officiating. Burial will be in Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8:30 p.m. today.

Survivors are her husband; one son; two daughters, including Mary Tomcak of Hastings; one brother; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
