Former Glenvil resident Tony F. Ockinga, 94, of Hastings, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Leonard VanderVegte

Friday, Feb. 11, 2000

Sutton resident Leonard VanderVegte, 34, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hope Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. George Horner officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. VanderVegte was born Dec. 6, 1965, to Harold and Leona (Nootenboom) VanderVegte in Downey, Calif. He attended Calvin Christian School in Escondido, Calif., and Temecula, Calif., elementary schools. In 1983 he graduated from Lake Elsior High School in California. On June 27, 1992, he married Sheila J. Hoogland in Edgerton, Minn. They lived in Sutton where he worked masonry construction.

He was a member of the Hope Reformed Church.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Leendred of Sutton; his parents of Hull, Iowa; and two sisters, Joanne DeRaadt of Escondido and Heather Zwart of Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Raymond Pearson

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Minden resident Raymond Pearson, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Minden with the Rev. James O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery with military rites conducted by Minden American Legion Post No. 94. Visitation is prior to services Tuesday at the church. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pearson was born Aug. 10, 1910, to Pete and Bettie (Rodine) Pearson in Minden. He grew up in the Minden area and attended Minden Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45 during World War II. On Nov. 22, 1947, he married Frances Sullivan in Chicago. They lived in Minden where he worked as a plumber. He worked on the Harlan County Reservoir and later on several dam projects on the west coast. After he retired, he and his wife moved to Arizona. They moved to Hastings in 1980 and returned to Minden's Bethany Home in 1998.

Survivor is his wife.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Ernest W. Feldmann

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Athol, Kan., resident Ernest W. Feldmann, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Infinia Health Care in Smith Center, Kan.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Athol with the Rev. Katharine Yarnell officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Gaylord, Kan. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Simmons Mortuary in Smith Center.

Mr. Feldmann was born Aug. 21, 1910, to Carl Conrad Feldmann and Marie Heuer in Schwitschen, Germany. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Ruby Beckmann on Nov. 3, 1947. He worked as a farmer all his life.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife of Smith Center and one son, Larry of Athol.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruby Ann; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Disabled American Veterans.

Elfreida E. Krakow

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Davenport resident Elfreida E. (Johnson) Krakow, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Fairbury.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport with the Rev. Phillip Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport City Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport and two hours prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Krakow was born Dec. 31, 1910, to William and Caroline (Hinz) Johnson in Nuckolls County. She graduated in 1930 from Davenport High School. On June 22, 1935, she married Robert Alonzo Krakow in Hastings. She graduated from Peru State College in Peru in 1962. She taught at rural schools in Sedan and Olive Hill, Kan., and at Colby Public Schools in Kansas. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of Christ's Lutheran Church, the Kansas State Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Survivors are one son, Jere of Salt Lake City; one daughter, Sandra Smith of Sterling, Colo.; one sister, Margaret Mosier of Davenport; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Marjorie A. Lehmkuhl

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Minden resident Marjorie A. Lehmkuhl, 66, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Miss Lehmkuhl was born March 10, 1933, to Charles and Gladys (Schwab) Lehmkuhl in Wahoo. She moved with her family to Minden and graduated in 1951 from Minden High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one year and graduated from beauty school in Colorado. She worked as a beautician in Colorado Springs, Colo., and moved to Omaha in 1956. She moved back to Minden in the 1980s where she owned and operated the Beauty Gallery. She retired in 1996.

She was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Moab Chapter No. 182 in Minden.

Survivors are two sisters, Jean Grauerholz of Akron, Colo., and Helen Bartholomew of Green Valley, Ariz.

Memorials may be given to the church or Minden Senior Citizen Center, or make a blood donation to the Red Cross in her name.

Harry F. Prochaska

Friday, Feb. 11, 2000

Palmer resident Harry F. Prochaska, 88, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Church of Christ in Palmer with the Rev. Jerry Quandt officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Patricia Prochaska of Hastings; two stepdaughters; two stepsons; one sister; and 10 stepgrandchildren.

Helen E. Janssen

Friday, Feb. 11, 2000

Hastings resident Helen Eugenie (Heinz) Janssen, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Villa Grace.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Revs. Harold Stromer and Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Janssen was born July 31, 1908, to Henry and Olga (Luschei) Heinz in Sutton. She graduated from Sutton High School and attended college for two years. She taught at Sutton Public Schools for 14 years. On June 18, 1947, she married Henry E. Janssen. They moved to Hastings where she was a substitute teacher for Hastings Public Schools for three years. In 1990 her husband died.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and was a Sunday School teacher for several years.

Survivors are two daughters, Jeanne Fisk and Julie Vanderpool, both of Hastings; three sisters, Marie Heinz of Fairmont, Gertrude Scott of Winfield, Kan., and Margaret Anderson of Miami, Okla.; one brother, Carl of Vacaville, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Donna M. Jensen

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000

Harvard resident Donna M. (Lammers) Jensen, 61, died, at Aurora Memorial Hospital.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Harvard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin Coffey officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Fredricksburg Cemetery near Minden. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.

Mrs. Jensen was born May 27, 1938, to Albert and Erma (Jackson) Lammers in Riverton. She married Donald Jensen on Jan. 26, 1958. She had lived in Harvard since 1967. From 1985-87 she was an aide at Harvard Rest Haven. On Oct. 21, 1998, her husband died.

She was a member of the Harvard United Methodist Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Joy Ekstein of Ravenna; four sons, Scott of Ravenna, Jeff of Hastings, Todd of Dorchester and Mitch of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Gary of Bladen and Ronnie of Riverton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Frank Hines

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000

Hebron resident Frank Hines, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home chapel in Hebron with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Masonic services are by Hebron Masonic Lodge No. 43. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron with military rites conducted by American Legion Saxton Post No. 180 of Hebron. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hines was born March 30, 1924, to Albert and Mable (Conaway) Hines in Kensington, Kan. He married Lois Fitzgerald. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a retired Batch Plant superintendent for dam construction in various parts of the world.

He was a member of the Saxton American Legion Post No. 180, VFW Goldstar No. 5328 and Hebron Masonic Lodge No. 43. He also was an honorary member of the Hebron Country Club.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Patricia Cannoy and Pauline Grubbs, both of Oroville, Calif., and Deedra Watson of Lincoln; four sons, Rod Shettlesworth, Curtis Shettlesworth and Jeffrey Shettlesworth, all of Lincoln and Timothy Shettlesworth of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Joan Ernst of Hebron; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Hebron Country Club.

Opal M. Shay

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Opal Mae (Stafford) Shay, 97, of Alma, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home chapel in Alma with the Rev. Glen Meyers and the Rev. Dr. Melvin Zichek officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shay was born Jan. 19, 1903, to Amos Willard and Pearl Mae (Robinson) Stafford in Juniata. She grew up in Hastings and graduated from high school there in 1921. On Aug. 2, 1922, she married Francis "Frank" Elmer Shay in Hastings. They lived in Hastings until 1935 when they moved to Central City. In 1940 they moved to Whittier, Calif., and returned to Central City in 1945. In 1965 they moved to Hastings and then to Alma in 1971. On Oct. 16, 1985, her husband died. She moved to Colonial Villa in September 1994.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Alma and a former member of the Rebecca Lodge in Alma and the NCHA Camping Club.

She also was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials have been established to the First Christian Church in Alma.

Robert J. Darrah

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000

Hastings resident Robert J. Darrah, 69, of 528 Lane F died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Darrah was born Nov. 7, 1930, to Glenn and Veta (Hollers) Darrah in Omaha. He graduated from high school in Omaha and from Creighton University in Omaha. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War where he was wounded in action and a prisoner of war for nine months. He worked in car sales and management with new and used cars. He married Mary Lou Frey. In 1989 they moved from North Platte to Hastings.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte and of the VFW.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Susan Goin and Laurie Caronna, both of Las Vegas; one stepdaughter, Lou Anne Wakefield of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Jim Darrah of Las Vegas and Scott Woods of Hastings; one stepson, Richard Wroten of Loveland; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Crossroads Center in Hastings.
