Ethelyn Hersh

Sunday, July 4, 1999

Kenesaw resident Ethelyn (Tiff) Hersh, 84, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. David Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Mrs. Hersh was born Feb. 27, 1915, to John Franklin and Marie (Harris) Tiff on the B.J. Turney Ranch near Ansley. She attended Clear Creek School and later Gifford School, both near Berwyn. On March 3, 1933, she married Dean Hersh in Kearney. For seven years, they farmed east of Broken Bow. In 1940 she and her family moved to a ranch near Dunning where they lived in a sodhouse. In 1946 they moved to Coos Bay, Ore., for a year. From 1953-56 they lived in Milwaukie, Ore. While in Oregon, she took art lessons. She taught painting classes in her home and in Broken Bow. In 1979 she and her husband bought a home in Berwyn. On March 1, 1994, her husband died.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Dunning, the board of directors of the Sodhouse Society and the H.E.O. Club in Berwyn.

Survivors are two sons, Larry of Kenesaw and Dan of Ord; two sisters, Evelyn Hall of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Lucille Kulhanek of Fruita, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Royce Lynn; one sister; and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Blaine County Rescue Unit.

Kathryn H. Thoesen

Sunday, July 4, 1999

Minden resident Kathryn H. (Hansen) Thoesen, 71, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Holstein. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Thoesen was born Jan. 10, 1928, to Otto and Minnie (Kimle) Hansen near Holstein. She attended Mayflower District 68 and Lutheran Parochial schools in Holstein. On Jan. 24, 1946, she married Donald Thoesen at the church parsonage in Holstein. She and her husband owned and operated Sugar Loaf Antiques in Holstein. In November 1994, they moved to Minden.

She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Minden.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Judy Jacobs of Hastings; two sons, Donald R. of Hastings and Robert of Holdrege; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Lee Kersh

Monday, June 28, 1999

Former Mount Clare resident Lee (Smalley) Frederickson Kersh, 85, died Monday, June 28, 1999, in Los Angeles.

Services were to be today at the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Los Angeles. Private burial was to be held at the Edgar Cemetery in Edgar. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kersh was born July 16, 1913, to Lee and Edith (Yohey) Smalley in Mount Clare. She grew up in Nuckolls County, where she attended school and graduated. In 1945 she moved to California. In 1934 she married Kenneth Frederickson. They divorced in 1947. In 1954 she married Calvin Kersh. Her husband died in 1979. While in California, she worked for Whittier and Atlantic Bowling.

Survivors are her daughter, Kay Fuller of Pasadena, Calif.; and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

John G. Trupp

Sunday, July 4, 1999

Hastings resident John G. Trupp, 108, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings with the Rev. Lee Wigert officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Trupp was born Oct. 3, 1890, to George and Katrinna (Lapp) Trupp in Frank, Russia. He moved with his family at an early age to eastern Colorado. In 1898 he moved to Hastings. In 1914 he married Mollie Lissman in Nelson. She later died. He worked as a leatherman for Dutton Lainson Co. and later as a stock and shipping clerk for Sidles Automotive, both in Hastings. He retired in 1955.

He was a member of the New York Avenue Congregational Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Bonnie Lea Scheele of Tucson, Ariz.; three sons, Wilson of Green Valley, Ariz., Milen of Lake Andes, S.D., and Marvin of Lomita, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Downey; one sister; and five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the New York Avenue Congregational Church, Good Samaritan Village or donor's choice.

Russel W. Zulauf

Monday, July 5, 1999

Former Franklin County resident Russel Wayne Zulauf, 83, of Kearney, died Monday, July 5, 1999, at St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Community Church in Wilcox. Burial will be in Freewater Cemetery in Wilcox. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the church. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Zulauf was born June 16, 1916, to Fred B. and Jennie Elizabeth (Potter) Zulauf in the Pleasant View/Ash Grove Community in Franklin County. He attended Pleasant View Rural School District 36 in Franklin County through the eighth grade. In 1933, he graduated from Wilcox High School in Wilcox. He then began farming with his father. On June 7, 1942, he married Irene Elnore Johnson at Moses Hill Church near Holdrege. He and his wife moved to a farm south of Wilcox. He also worked as an antique dealer. On Sept. 2, 1986, his wife died. In November 1998, he moved to St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney.

He was a former member of the Pleasant View Christian Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Lois Zulauf of Quincy, Mass.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jane; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Eldon H. Gosnell

Friday, July 2, 1999

Former Hebron resident Eldon Harold Gosnell, 99, of Beardstown, Ill., died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Rushville, Ill.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, Ill. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron.

Mr. Gosnell was born Oct. 1, 1899, to David M. and Rozella (Mulqueen) Gosnell in Lander, Wyo. On June 11, 1924, he married Hazel Floy Heller in Detroit. He raised and sold produce and also worked for the railroad. On July 12, 1991, his wife died.

Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.

W. Wilson Shurigar

Saturday, July 17, 1999

Kenesaw resident W. Wilson Shurigar, 86, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.

The remains were cremated. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Tom Gould officiating. Visitors can sign the guest book 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.

Mr. Shurigar was born April 29, 1913, to John and Mollye (Godwin) Shurigar on a farm north of Kenesaw. He attended school in Kenesaw. In 1931 he graduated from Kenesaw High School in Kenesaw. On Sept. 16, 1940, he married Mary L. Phillips in Seneca, Kan. They moved to Omaha where he made airplanes for Glen L. Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue. In 1948 he and his wife moved to Kenesaw, where he owned and operated a custom combining business for 30 years. During the winter, he worked for Rural Gas and Petroleum Station in Hastings. In 1978 he retired.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw and the Elks in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Glenda Shurigar of Hastings; three sons, Jon of Aurora, Colo., Clinton of North Platte and Steven of Holstein; one sister, Dorothy Hall of Grand Island; two brothers, Marion and Frank, both of Kenesaw; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

John J. Consbruck

Hastings resident John J. Consbruck, 88, of 738 E. Fifth St., died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Genevieve Shafer

Tuesday, July 13, 1999

Former Hastings resident Genevieve (Wyman) Shafer, 78, of Riverside, Calif., died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in Riverside.

Services were Saturday at the First Christian Church in Riverside with the Rev. Chris Nettles officiating. Burial was in Crestlawn Memorial Park in Riverside. Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary of Riverside was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shafer was born Oct. 26, 1920, to Carl and Eda (Sorensen) Wyman in Hastings. In 1938 she graduated from Hastings Senior High School in Hastings. On July 3, 1941, she married Oliver Shafer at the First Christian Church in Hastings. In 1966 they moved to Riverside where she worked as a school cafeteria manager for 15 years. In 1993, her husband died.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Riverside and was active in several church groups.

Survivors are two sons, Jack of Mesa, Ariz., and Ronald of Morena Valley, Calif.; one brother, Carroll of Juniata; three sisters, Bonnie Alderman of Santa Clarita, Calif., Doris Lampman of Colby, Kan., and JoAnne Weber of Hastings; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Timothy; four brothers; and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to charity of donor's choice.

Marjorie P. Stiles

Hastings resident Marjorie P. Stiles, 88, of 516 N. Hastings Ave., died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace East in Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Beverly A. Hall

Monday, July 19, 1999

Former Hastings resident Beverly Ann (McKay) Hall, 66, of Republican City, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Holstein with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery in Holstein. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Hall was born Nov. 16, 1932, to Norval and Myra (Monson) McKay in Rolla, N.D. She attended Oxford rural grade school in North Dakota. In 1951 she graduated from Rolla High School in Rolla. She then moved to Seattle where she worked for Block Shoe Stores and Allstate Insurance. On Oct. 16, 1953, she married Melvin Hall in Seattle. In 1954 they moved to Campbell for a short time before living in Hastings for 30 years. They then moved to Republican City.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Republican City, Llreva Club and Pythian Sisters of Nebraska.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Katherine Engle of Grand Island and Lael Churchill of Holstein; two sisters, Betty Pope of Arvada, Colo., and Barbara Deboi of Novato, Calif.; three brothers, Douglas and Bill, both of Moorton, N.D. and Ronald of Westhope, N.D.; and five grandchildren.

Quentene B. Olsen

Thursday, July 1, 1999

Minden resident Quentene Beulah (Anderson) Olsen, 78, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney with the Rev. Teresa Chamberlain officiating. Layton Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olsen was born Oct. 17, 1920, to Fred and Laura (Aabel) Anderson in Minden. She grew up in Minden. In 1938 she graduated from Minden High School in Minden. She attended Kearney State College for two years and then taught in rural schools for three years. On Feb. 20, 1943, she married Lemoine J. Olsen in Minden. They moved to the Army base in Salina, Kan., and then returned to Minden to farm. In 1976 she moved to Kearney. In 1999 she moved to Bethany Home in Minden.

She was a past member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden, a member and past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Kearney, a member of the Sigma Theta Phi Sorority and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are four daughters, Sheryl Boisen of Minden, Linda Lund and Marcy Etzelmiller, both of Ogallala, and Teresa Detlefsen of North Platte; one brother, Vance of Littleton, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
