Sharon R. Ramsey

Sunday, July 18, 1999

Former area resident Sharon Rae (Stern) Vergo Ramsey, 57, of Pueblo, Colo., died Sunday, July 18, 1999, in Pueblo after a long battle with cancer.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Pueblo, Colo. Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Cemetery at Fullerton. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ramsey was born June 26, 1941, to Ray and Geri (Thomas) Stern in Genoa. She graduated from Clarks High School. On July 11, 1959, she married Roger Vergo. On April 3, 1993, she married Frank Ramsey. She lived in Clarks, Central City, Hastings, Superior and Pueblo.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star of Clarks/Central City.

Survivors are her husband; her father of Pueblo; one daughter, Tami Cornelison of Pueblo; two sons, John Vergo of Pueblo, and Steve Vergo of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Crystal Biby and Vanda Jensen, both of Canyon City, Colo., and Rhea Taylor of Pueblo West, Colo.; and 14 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant sons, Little Angel; her mother; and one brother.

Judy E. LaFever

Saturday, July 17, 1999

Esbon, Kan., resident Judy E. (McKellips) LaFever, 59, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Private family burial will be in Ulysses, Kan.

Mrs. LaFever was born July 13, 1940, to Charles A. and Eva M. (Robison) McKellips in Caney, Kan. She moved with her family to Oklahoma at a young age. They returned to Kansas to live in Pratt and later Ulysses, where she graduated from high school. On June 18, 1955, she married Ronald LaFever in Clayton, N.M. They lived in Pampa, Texas; Ulysses and Johnson City, Kan. In 1964 they moved to Basin, Wyo. In 1967 they moved to Hugo, Colo. In 1971 they moved to Red Cloud. In 1974 they moved to Esbon, Kan. She was employed for several years at the Esbon Cafe in Esbon, and from 1979-1985, she owned and operated Sam's Place in Esbon.

Survivors are her husband; three sons, Ronnie of Milwaukee, Wis., Jeff of Wichita, Kan., and Greg of Ulysses; one sister, Evelyn Skinner of North Richland Hills, Texas; one brother, Edward of Joplin, Mo.; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Marie E. Brodrick

Monday, July 19, 1999

Edgar resident Marie E. (Glass) Brodrick, 92, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Community Presbyterian Church in Fairfield with the Rev. Royce E. Buchtel officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield.

Mrs. Brodrick was born Nov. 20, 1906, to Fred Everett and Carrie Della (Nevins) Glass near Fairfield. She attended rural country school and Fairfield High School in Fairfield. On Sept. 9, 1925, she married Earl Brodrick in Smith Center, Kan. They farmed near Fairfield. In 1967 they retired and moved into Fairfield. On May 10, 1982, her husband died. In 1996 she moved to Integrated Health Services in Edgar.

She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Fairfield and a past member of the Country Woman's Club in Fairfield.

Survivors are one son, Allan of Fairfield; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Community Presbyterian Church.

William E. 'Billy' McKimmey

Friday, July 16, 1999

Kenesaw resident William E. "Bill" McKimmey, 66, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dean Joy officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. McKimmey was born Jan. 15, 1933, to Ralph and Edna (Parker) McKimmey in Sargent. He attended school in Custer County. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Campaign. He married Bonita Kuhns. In 1984 he married Nellie (Schutte) Jones. He was employed by Consolidated Motor Freight in Hastings for 32 years. In 1990 he retired.

He was a member of Teamster Union No. 554.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Randal and Jeffery, both of Hastings, and Bobbie Jones of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Lesa Armstrong of Kenesaw and Kailyn Duker of Lincoln; two brothers, Chester of Torrington, Wyo., and Eldon "Bud" of Juniata; one sister, Ellen Doden of Palmyra; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Billie Joe and Brian; five brothers; and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Ome C. Shoemaker

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Cambridge resident Ome Carroll Shoemaker, 95, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Congregational/UCC Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Walter Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge. Lockenour-Jones Mortuary of Cambridge is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, including D. Charles of Hastings; one daughter; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Peter S. Kerr

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Smith Center, Kan., resident Peter Stuart Kerr, 64, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Republican City with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial will be in the Republican City Cemetery in Republican City. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kerr was born Aug. 17, 1934, to Elvin and Violet (Hoffman) Kerr in Republican City. In 1952 he graduate from Republican City High School. Soon after he joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the Korean War. In 1956 he was discharged. He then attended Central Airline Tech. Institute. After graduation he began working at Frontier Airlines in Denver. For six years his duties ranged from airport ramp agent to supervisor of reservations. In 1965 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. His career in the Army took him all over the world, including Italy, England and Germany. In 1982 he retired from the U.S. Army. On March 27, 1987, he married Darlene Samuelson in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He was a member of the American Legion in Naponee.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Randy; two daughters, Trudi Gummelt of Texas and Shannon Young of Oklahoma; two stepdaughters, Marci Smith of Missouri and Marion Kresta of Louisiana; one stepson, Frank Machado of Utah; one sister, Kay Elwood of Alma; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Eleanore E. 'Ellie' Yilk

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Former Hastings resident Eleanore E. "Ellie" (Kuhn) Yilk, 80, of Grand Island, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Monday and services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to rosary Monday at the church.

Mrs. Yilk was born Sept. 8, 1918, to Frank and Emma (Huppert) Kuhn in Blue Hill. On Nov. 23, 1938, she married Charles Yilk. In 1993 he died. She was employed by Schweser's in Hastings as a sale clerk.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and its Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America and former member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings.

Survivors are four daughters, Sunny K. Melichar of Witchita, Kan., Connie R. Thomazin of Grand Island, Mickey L. Lawson of Wadena, Minn., and Charlie A. Durbin of Brunswick, Maine; three sisters, Mary Alber of Hastings, Middy Brennan of Des Moines, Iowa, and Lenera Walters of California; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Mary Lanning Memorial Hospice or St. Francis Hospice.

Charles "Chuck" L. Fogo

Friday, July 16, 1999

Esbon, Kan., resident Charles L. "Chuck" Fogo, 77, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care unit in Mankato, Kan.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Esbon with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Burial, with military rites provided by Service Battalion 1-5 Field Artillery, Fort Riley, Kan., American Legion Perry Lamb Post No. 368 of Esbon and the VFW Post of Beloit, is in Esbon Cemetery at Esbon. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Melby Mortuary of Mankato.

Mr. Fogo was born Sept. 23, 1921, to Charles E. and Stella (Sink) Fogo in Burr Oak, Kan. He graduated from Esbon High School and retired from the U.S. Army Air Corps at the rank of major. He was commander of National Guard Units in Mankato, Belleville, Kan., and Concordia, Kan. He served on the Esbon Rural School Board of Education for six years, as a Jewell County Hospital trustee for eight years and as Jewell County Commissioner for 18 1/2 years.

He was a life member of Esbon American Legion Post No. 368 and the Beloit VFW.

Survivors are his wife, Glenna; one son, Glenn of Johnson, Kan.; two sisters, Esther Michael and Ardell Church, both of Denver; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Esbon or the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.

Wilbur D. Hattan

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Former area resident Wilbur D. Hattan, 77, of Omaha died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Omaha.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Christian Church in Omaha. Burial will be 5 p.m. Monday at the Nelson Cemetery in Nelson. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hattan was born Feb. 4, 1922, to Paul and Caroline (Peters) Hattan in Edgar. He graduated from Nelson High School in 1938. He worked at the local grain elevator. He served in the U.S. Navy stationed in Pensacola, Fla. He achieved the rank of lieutenant junior grade. After his Navy service, he attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, graduating with a civil engineering degree in 1950. On March 19, 1944, he married Doris Jean Statz. He worked briefly for Platte Valley Cement and Tile Manufacturing Co. He pursued his engineering career, working 32 years for the Nebraska Department of Roads. He and his family lived in Fremont until 1977. He was promoted to district engineer, and he and his family moved to Omaha. He lived there after his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 65 years, serving as financial secretary, elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and board chairman. At the time of his death, he was a member of Faith Christian Church in Omaha.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Lura Cayton of Oklahoma City, Okla., Lynelle Yzaguiree of Dallas; and Valerie Romberg of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one son, David of Lewisville, Texas; one brother, Hubert of Concordia, Kan.; two sisters, Arnita Pitmon of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Leota Farver of Nelson; nine grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lowell Harold Devitt

Friday, July 16, 1999

Edgar resident Lowell Harold Devitt, 85, died Friday, July 16, 1999, in Edgar.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Kirk Enispahr officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

Mr. Devitt was born March 19, 1914 to Omar F. and Nellie M. (Bowman) Devitt near Oak. He married Flora Mae Holman Dec. 22, 1944. They farmed together in Oak, Edgar and Inavale. Later they moved to the Glenvil and Hastings areas. Flora died July 18, 1987. He lived in Edgar from 1985 to 1996, then moving to the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Survivors are a brother, Donald of Edgar.

He is preceded in death by one brother, Marion; one sister, Ermal Hanson.

Verna C. Anderson

Thursday, July 15, 1999

Hastings resident Verna C. Anderson, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at the pavilion.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday at Kearney Cemetery in Kearney with the Rev. Barbara Hart officiating. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson was born to Arthur and Ida (Kellogg) Welton in Harrisburg. She attended school in Scottsbluff. She married Clyde Anderson. He preceded her in death. She had lived at the pavilion since 1991.

Survivors are one son, Glen of California; and one daughter, Phyllis King of California.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Virgil H. Welsh

Monday, July 12, 1999

Hastings resident Virgil H. Welsh, 93, died Monday, July 12, 1999, in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul with Tom Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation is prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Welsh was born May 10, 1906, to Willie and Mary (Sorensen) Welsh in Farwell. He was raised as a young child in Farwell. The family then moved to St. Paul. In 1925 he graduated from St. Paul High School in St. Paul. He then attended St. Paul Business College. After college, he worked at Bartle's Store in St. Paul. On July 30, 1938, he married Nonnie Suchy in O'Neill. He was employed at St. Paul Bank, and later Citizen's Bank in St. Paul, where is was owner until he retired in 1967. He also worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island during World War II. He served as St. Paul city treasurer for 30 years. His wife died May 14, 1989. In 1990, he moved to Hastings.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Duck's Unlimited, St. Paul Gun Club, St. Paul Fire Department and St. Paul Golf Club Board of Directors. He was the treasurer for the Salvation Army for 35 years, and served two terms on the St. Paul Board of Education.

Survivors are one daughter, Jean Reynolds of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the St. Paul emergency medical technicians or the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.
