Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000

Former Blue Hill resident Neil D. Rose, 57, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Colorado Springs.

Services were to be 11 a.m. today at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs. Burial was to be in Memorial Gardens in Colorado Springs. Swan-Law Funeral Home of Colorado Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence J. Krebsbach

Friday, Jan. 28, 2000

Former Nelson resident Lawrence J. "Larry" Krebsbach, 49, of Hershey died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte with the Rev. John Schaefer officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Cemetery in Elgin with the Rev. Thomas Bauwens officiating. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Funeral Home chapel in North Platte.

Mr. Krebsbach was born Aug. 9, 1950, to Ralph H. and Norma (Herz) Krebsbach in Nelson. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1968 and attended Central Community College-Hastings. He married Julie Binger in 1970. They later divorced. He lived in Aurora where he worked for a produce company. He later was stationed at Sidney with the Nebraska State Patrol for five years. He transferred to North Platte in 1976. In 1978 he became an independent insurance agent, operating Krebsbach Agency until his death. On Dec. 9, 1978, he married Janie Strotheide. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for the past year and a half.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, the Eagles Lodge, the National Cutting Horse Association and the Western Nebraska Cutters.

Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Heidi Henery of Humboldt, S.D., Holly Kerkman of Elgin and Samantha Krebsbach of Texas; his father of Lawrence; one brother, Bob of Grand Island; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be given to the Western Nebraska Cutters Scholarship Fund.

Sarah Raun

Friday, Aug. 6, 1999

Minden resident Sarah (Smith) Raun, 97, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at the Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.

Memorial services are 3 p.m. Monday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Private family burial will be at Osco Cemetery near Minden. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Raun was born Aug. 8, 1901, to Arthur and Amanda (Sallee) Smith in Kearney County. She graduated from Campbell High School. She attended Kearney Normal and later the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She later returned to Kearney County where she taught in rural schools in Adams and Kearney counties. On Nov. 9, 1922, she married Chris L. Raun. They lived northeast of Upland and farmed in Kearney and Franklin counties. They moved into Minden in 1944. Her husband died Feb. 27, 1992.

She was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church, P.E.O. and the Minden American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are three sons, Ned of Stillwater, Okla., Rob of Minden and Art of Elbert, Colo.; one daughter, Joan Kopf of Minden; three sisters, Artie Faber of Colby, Kan., Jean Frisbie of York and Marian Meredith of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to Westminster United Presbyterian Church.

Loren R. Stotts

Friday, Aug. 6, 1999

Juniata resident Loren R. Stotts, 64, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his home.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Stotts was born March 11, 1935, in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-58. On March 15, 1978, he married Donita Zeigler. They moved to Juniata from Hastings in 1986. He was as a self-employed general contractor.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Troy of Lexington, Bob of Loveland, Colo., and Loren of Lakewood, Colo.; two stepsons, Frank Gale of North Platte and Brian Gale of San Diego; three stepdaughters, Sherry Apland of Minnesota and Shirleen Tomlin and Shannon Bunch, both of Hastings; five grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Hazel I. Carlson

Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999

Grand Island resident Hazel Irene (Baumgartner) Carlson, 79, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.

Wake services were Aug. 19 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Miguel Guevara officiating. Services were Aug. 20 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte with the Rev. Tom Dillon officiating. Burial was in the North Platte Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Mae Theiler of Roseland; one son; one sister; two brothers, including Leonard Baumgartner of Hastings; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Irvene E. Hatch

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999

Former Blue Hill resident Irvene E. (Leech) Hatch, 83, of Oregon, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hatch was born April 19, 1916, in Blue Hill. In 1940 she married Walter Hatch. She lived near Portland, Ore., since 1940. She worked as a clerk for Burlington Northern Railroad for more than 30 years when she retired in 1976. In 1988 her husband died.

She was a member of the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

Survivors are two sisters, Donna Jean Stuehrenberg of Hastings and Dorothy Kral of Aurora.

Jean M. Grier

Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999

Former Hastings resident Jean Maxine (Willmes) Grier, 74, of Anza, Calif., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Services were Aug. 20 at St. Louis Church in Cathedral City, Calif. Burial was in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Orange, Calif. Palm Springs Mortuaries of Cathedral City was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Grier was born June 5, 1925, to Arthur and Rose (Zubrod) Willmes in Hastings. She graduated from St. Cecilia's High School in Hastings in 1943. On Sept. 3, 1945, she married William "Bill" Grier in Hastings.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, David of Aguanga, Calif., and Richard of Murietta Springs, Calif.; her mother of Cathedral City; one sister, Shirley Cencak of Downey, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Theodore Arthur and Gregory James.

Memorials may be given to the charity of choice.

Ruth M. Martin

Monday, April 17, 2000

Former Hastings resident Ruth M. (McIntire) Martin, 87, of Grand Island died Monday, April 17, 2000, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. C. Roger Nelson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin was born Feb. 25, 1913, to Russell Schull and Elvira Bertha (Balfanz) McIntire in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School and attended Hastings College. She taught at a country school for two years. On July 22, 1934, she married William Albert Martin in Hastings. They lived in Grand Island. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Women's Association, Esther Circle, Management and Finance Committee and the Shrine Auxiliary. She also was a Girl Scout leader and a Boy Scout den mother.

Survivors are one son, Stephen of Branson, Mo.; one daughter, Judith Berkson of Grand Island; one brother, Russell J. of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation Restricted Funds for Cancer Leukemia Group B Study in Grand Island.

Mildred M. Koerwitz

Saturday, April 15, 2000

Deshler resident Mildred M. (Ohlrich) Koerwitz, 78, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at her home.

Services were Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial was in the Deshler City Cemetery. Deshler Memorial Funeral Home of Deshler was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Koerwitz was born Sept. 19, 1921, to Henry and Mary (Hofts) Ohlrich on a farm southwest of Deshler. She attended St. Peter Lutheran School and graduated from Deshler High School in 1939. She then attended Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln. On June 20, 1946, she married Roland Koerwitz in Deshler. She worked for the Thayer County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Hebron for 24 years before she retired.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Sharyn Pequette of Beecher, Ill., and Pamela Priefert of Superior; one brother, Roy of Los Alamitos, Calif.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Minnie D. Shaffer

Tuesday, March 28, 2000

Red Cloud resident Minnie D. (Harrington) Shaffer, 101, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Mike Lehr officiating. Burial will be at the Guide Rock Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaffer was born March 7, 1899, to Phillip and Sarah (Marshall) Harrington in DuBois. In 1906 she moved with her family to a farm south of Guide Rock where she attended rural school in Webster County. On June 15, 1916, she married Joe A. Shaffer in Guide Rock. They farmed south of Guide Rock and later moved to Hillsboro, Ore. They returned to Nebraska where they had a bakery in Guide Rock. She also worked as a cook at the State Hospital in Kearney and for a fraternity house in Lincoln. They moved back to Guide Rock where they lived until 1969 when they moved to Red Cloud. On Feb. 22, 1981, her husband died.

Survivors are one daughter, Neva Hunter of Guide Rock; one son, Opal of Curtis; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters and one great-grandchild.

Kermit L. Erickson

Wednesday, March 29, 2000

Hardy resident Kermit L. Erickson, 80, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kan.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Williams Funeral Home in Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Erickson was born Dec. 2, 1919, to Luther E. and Esther (Thorson) Erickson in Edgar. He attended Edgar Country School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Alaska and Germany. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He married Joan Booker. She died in 1964. In 1969 he married Eleanor Walker. He spent most of his life in Simi Valley, Calif., where he owned a dry wall construction company. In 1979 he and his wife retired to Hardy.

He received the Bronze Star.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Carol Browder of North Hollywood, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Kay Morton of Oxnard, Calif., and Alana Daniels and Cindy Smith, both of Simi Valley; one brother, Vincent of Hastings; one sister, Arlyne Gunn of Superior; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Melvin D. Burge

Wednesday, March 29, 2000

Hastings resident Melvin D. Burge, 66, of 1203 E. Park St. No. 1 died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday with family present from 7-9 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Burge was born Dec. 1, 1933, to Oscar K. and Thora M. (Smith) Burge in Jewell County, Kan. On Jan. 17, 1954, he married Grace I. Kudrna in Cowles. From 1956-58 he served in the U.S. Army. He worked for several years at Hastings Utilities and later at Ace Hardware in Hastings.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Eagles.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Audrey Peterson of Hastings; four sons, Darrell and Brian, both of Aurora, Mo., and Brad and Lynn, both of Norfolk; four brothers, Marlin of Webber, Kan., Dale of Goodman, Mo., Ronnie of Neosho, Mo., and Dean of Texas; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister; one brother; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.
