Shickley resident LaVerne R. "Vern" Cool, 61, died Friday, July 23, 1999, in Geneva.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Shickley with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Shickley Public Cemetery. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Sunday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Clarus E. Whithorn

Friday, July 23,1999

Edgar resident Clarus E. Whithorn, 84, died Friday, July 23,1999, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Edgar with the Revs. Kirk Einspahr and Mark Imel officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whithorn was born Aug. 31, 1914, to George W. and Fannie (Bradley) Whithorn in Fairfield. He attended Fairfield School and then farmed for several years in Kansas. On Aug. 31, 1932, he married Violet Alice Hamburger at Nelson. In the early 1940s he owned and operated a trucking company. He and his wife moved to a farm in the Edgar-Nelson area in 1946 and lived there until 1966 when they moved to Edgar. On Jan. 23, 1989, his wife died. On Dec. 31, 1994, he married Billie Grossman. They lived in Edgar.

He was a member of the Edgar Christian Church and the Lions Club.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Clara Ruttman and Ruth Ann Whitmore, both of Nelson; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Bill Jeter

Friday, July 23, 1999

Kearney resident Bill Jeter, 51, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Kearney with the Revs. Stan Murdoch, Bob Gannon and Kevin Holloway officiating. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is from 4-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter; his mother; his father; and two sisters, including Becky Ciemnoczolowski of Hastings.

Herbert F. 'Herb' Thompson

Wednesday, July 21, 1999

Juniata resident Herbert F. "Herb" Thompson, 70, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Rosary is 10:15 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in the Juniata Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mr. Thompson was born Aug. 28, 1928, to Arthur and Hazel (Harrell) Thompson in Clarinda, Iowa. He moved to Hastings in 1944 and graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1947. On April 12, 1948, he married Emilye Skalka in Hastings. He worked at the Hastings Regional Center for 47 years as a psych technician before retiring in 1991.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Donna Myers of Smith Center, Kan., and Beverly Thompson of Lincoln; one son, Ron of Juniata; his mother, Hazel Thompson Fraley of Hastings; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Building Fund or the Nebraska Kidney Foundation.

Jeffrey B. Wilsman

Thursday, July 22, 1999

Franklin resident Jeffrey B. Wilsman, 46, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Franklin with the Revs. Baron and Nancy Cole officiating. The remains were cremated. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wilsman was born Nov. 14, 1952, to James F. and Barbara (Fruhling) Wilsman in Franklin. He attended school and graduated from Franklin High School in 1970. He worked as a butcher at Rightway Grocery and also was a gun smith in Franklin.

He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, the National Rifleman's Association, Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors are his father; one sister, Sarah Decker of Franklin; and two brothers, James F. Jr. of Camdenton, Mo., and Stu of Franklin.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice.

Wert J. Loschen

Wednesday, July 21, 1999

Hildreth resident Wert John Loschen, 80, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover Officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hildreth VFW. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mr. Loschen was born March 7, 1919, to Will and Anna (Nolte) Loschen in Kearney County. He graduated from School District 38 in Kearney County. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 with the 5th Armored Division, 34th Tank Battalion and Combat Command A, in the Eastern War Theatre during World War II. He was with the Utah Beach invasion at Normandy, France, the Liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. After invading Germany, they waited by the Elbe River until the Russians entered Berlin just before the end of the war. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and the Good Conduct and Sharpshooter medals. On Nov. 11, 1946, he married Pauline Post at Emmanuel Lutheran Church near Hildreth. They farmed until 1967 when they moved into Hildreth. He was employed by the Farmers Union Elevator and Schwartz Brothers Implement, both of Hildreth, before retiring. In 1997 he moved to the Bethany Home in Minden.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Patricia Cook of Eureka, Mont.; two sons, Bill of Hildreth and Jim of Holdrege; one sister, Louisa Maryhew of Cypress, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons and one brother.

William A. Fangmeier

Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000

Hebron resident William Adolph Fangmeier, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Hebron.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gilead with the Rev. Barbara Jewell officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Gilead. Visitation starts 2 p.m. Saturday at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mr. Fangmeier was born Feb. 9, 1918, to George II and Sophie (Krueger) Fangmeier on a farm six miles southwest of Gilead. He attended School District 97 until the eighth grade. He farmed with his father until his father died in 1965. He and his mother stayed on the farm until 1967, when they moved into Hebron. He drove the bus for Hebron Public School for more than 20 years.

He was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gilead, for which he was a historian and a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Brotherhood.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Frank H. Janssen

Former Glenvil resident Frank H. Janssen, 84, of Kenesaw Haven Home died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Arthur A. Fangmeier

Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000

Hebron resident Arthur August Fangmeier, 80, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gilead with the Rev. Barbara Jewell officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Gilead with military graveside services by Saxton American Legion Post No. 180 of Hebron. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. Saturday at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mr. Fangmeier was born Aug. 28, 1919, to August and Caroline (Heller) Fangmeier. He attended School District No. 97 until the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 during World War II. He served in the Algerian-Tunisian-Rome Arno campaigns and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service medals and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, he began a lifelong farming career. On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Lois L. Higel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gilead.

Survivors are his wife; one son, David of Hebron; one daughter, Jeanette Bangert of Diller; one brother, Norman of Hebron; three sisters, Ruth Pohlmann of Deshler, Martha Bauer of Fairbury and Adelaide Paysen of Atherton, Calif.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

A memorial has been established.

William 'Bill" G. Hughes

Hastings resident William "Bill" G. Hughes, 74, of 722 W. 33rd St. died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Tony F. Ockinga

Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000

Glenvil resident Tony F. Ockinga, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mr. Ockinga was born Jan. 1, 1906, to Henry and Katie (Onken) Ockinga in Inland Township, Clay County. In 1929 he started farming in the Clay County area. On Feb. 8, 1932, he married Frieda M. Davis in Glenvil. He had farmed south of Glenvil since 1951. He also worked as a salesman for Holdrege Seed and Farm Supply. On May 8, 1995, his wife died.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Lions Club of Glenvil.

Survivors are one son, Kenneth of Glenvil; two daughters, Delores Scott of Hastings and Marilyn Heinrichs of Phoenix; two brothers, Lesley of Glenvil and Harold of Lakewood, Wash.; three sisters, Marie Davis and Evelyn Everson, both of Glenvil, and Alice Mock of Hastings; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by two sons, Leland and Allen; two brothers; and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.

Dean R. Gunn

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Former Edgar resident Dean R. Gunn, 67, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island.

Graveside services with military honors are 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Edgar Cemetery with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gunn was born July 27, 1932, to Newton and Verna (Huffman) Gunn in Edgar. He graduated in 1950 from Edgar High School and attended Doane College in Crete. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He worked for Vulcan Hobert Corp. in Louisville, Ky., and Troy, Ohio, as a mechanical engineer. He recently moved to Grand Island.

Survivors are two sisters, Virginia Portrey of Houston, Mo., and Genevieve Northrop of Clay Center.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family.

Sarah T. 'Sadie' Johnstone

Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000

Hastings resident Sarah T. "Sadie" (O'Sullivan) Johnstone, 69, of 201 E. Fifth St., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

There are no services. The remains were cremated. Burial will be at a later date. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnstone was born Oct. 28, 1930, to Lawrence and Margaret (Fitzsimmons) O'Sullivan in Saltcoats, Scotland. She married James Johnstone. She moved to Hastings from Saltcoats in 1978. Her husband died in July 1989.

Survivors are one sister, Nanan MacLachlan of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Moira; and one brother.

John A. Kruse

Monday, Feb. 14, 2000

Harvard resident John A. Kruse, 89, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at the Harvard Rest Haven.

Services are pending with Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.
