Willard C. 'Willie' Saathoff

Friday, Feb. 11, 2000

Former Webster County resident Willard C. "Willie" Saathoff, 48, of Gillette, Wyo., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Gillette with the Rev. Gordon Harper officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Saathoff was born June 13, 1951, to Kenneth J. and Maxine E. (Jackson) Saathoff in Webster County. He was raised in Red Cloud where he graduated from high school in 1970. He later worked for a cheese plant in Hastings. He worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 24 years in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. On Sept. 15, 1988, he married Cheryl A. Pickinpough in Scottsbluff. They moved from Scottsbluff to Gillette in 1988. He was employed by Jim's Water Service in the pipeline division in Gillette.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Laneya J. Stott of Denver; one son, Mark S. of Denver; two sisters, Jaraldine M. Lantis of Upton and Judy Pierson of Red Cloud; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Northeast Wyoming Hospice. Donations may sent in care of Wilson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 734, Gillette, WY 82717.

Myrna L. Sykes

Monday, Feb. 14, 2000

Superior resident Myrna L. (Petersen) Sykes, 78, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery in Ruskin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sykes was born April 21, 1921, to Martin and Elsie (Petersen) Petersen on a farm north of Hardy. She attended Wymore School in rural Hardy. In 1934 she moved with her family to Ruskin. She graduated from Ruskin High School in 1938. She then taught at rural schools at Carleton and Deshler for three years. On May 11, 1941, she married Rex Sykes at her parents' home. They farmed at Ruskin for six years and Davenport for 33 years. In 1981 they retired and moved to Superior.

She was a member of the Ruskin Danish Brotherhood.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Lana Jordan of Salina, Kan., and Loma Grone of Davenport; two sons, Phillip of Norfolk and Steven of Lexington; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Superior Public Library.

Sylvia A. Coufal

Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000

Rosary for Ulyssess resident Sylvia A. Coufal, 96, who died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ulyssess. Services are 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. John Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation starts 9 a.m. Wednesday until services at the church. Knott Funeral Home of David City is in charge of arrangements. Coufal's son, Brian Coufal, lives in Hastings.

Wilbur 'Pete' Mankin

Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999

Harvard resident Wilbur Raymond Roy "Pete" Mankin, 78, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Giltner with the Revs. Dwight DeLaet and Paul Nauman officiating. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Mankin was born Jan. 3, 1921, to Clinton and Trella (Phelps) Mankin at Trumbull. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1938. He farmed and worked for the railroad until he entered the U.S. Navy. From 1942-46 he served as an electrician's mate 2nd class on the destroyer escort USS Stewart and the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. After his discharge, he followed wheat harvest with a combine crew and worked as a fireman on the railroad for the CB&Q Alliance division. On April 4, 1951, he married Mollie Michel Williams in Bellevue. They farmed south of Giltner where he eventually retired.

He was a member of the Giltner United Methodist Church. He also was a former member of the Giltner Board of Education and a member of the VFW in Harvard.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Gary of Aurora; one daughter, Sharon Schmidt of Norman, Okla.; three sisters, Arlene Pfieffer of Homewood, Ala., Izone Best of Yorktown, Va., and Rowena Mannschreck of Lewiston, Idaho; one brother, Blake of Hastings; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Dallas D. Volkmer

Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999

Former Shickley resident Dallas D. Volkmer, 71, of Waco died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Exeter with the Rev. Bob Brauninger officiating. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Sunday at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Exeter.

Mr. Volkmer was born Dec. 3, 1927, to Adolph and Leona (Schmock) Volkmer at Shickley.

Survivors are his wife, Irma Volkmer; one son, Jerry of McCool Junction; two daughters, Linda Galaway of McCool Junction and Kaye Weakland of Grand Island; two brothers, Clinton of Columbus and Duane of DeWitt; two sisters, Ramona Arp of Lexington and Patricia Bredenkamp of York; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Louise E. Kuhlmann

Monday, Sept. 27, 1999

Rural Byron resident Louise E. (Hoefer) Kuhlmann, 90, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church near Byron with the Rev. David Nordstrom officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery near Byron. Visitation is until 9:30 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Belleville, Kan.

Mrs. Kuhlman was born Aug. 17, 1909, to J. Leo and Lina (Hahne) Hoefer in Alabama. On Sept. 2, 1936, she married Otto C. Kuhlmann. He died Jan. 13, 1998.

Survivors are one son, Orvin of Wichita, Kan.; three daughters, Norma Thomsen of Clarinda, Iowa, Helen DeLellis of Seward and Lois Meyer of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Erich of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret E. 'Maggie' Kugler

Monday, June 19, 2000

Red Cloud resident Margaret Ellen "Maggie" (Jackson) Kugler, 84, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Infinia Health Care Center in Smith Center, Kan.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.

Mrs. Kugler was born Nov. 2, 1915, to Joe and Viola Mable (Gingrich) Jackson in Smith County, Kan. She grew up in Smith County and attended Pleasant Hill rural school. On Feb. 23, 1933, she married Victor H. Kugler in Smith Center. They farmed in Franklin County near Riverton until 1938. She operated the Riverton Cafe in Riverton for several years. She and her husband moved near Womer, Kan., in Smith County until 1947 when they moved south of Inavale to farm. In 1959 they moved into Red Cloud. On May 17, 1994, her husband died.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Joan Vinsonhaler of Smith Center; one sister, Clara Horton of Red Cloud; three brothers, Ernest of Franklin and Clifford and Allen, both of Riverton; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Billie Joe; and three brothers.

John Gettman

Tuesday, June 20, 2000

Kenesaw resident John Gettman, 83, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Juniata with the Rev. Gregory Volzke officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery in Juniata. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Mr. Gettman was born June 24, 1916, to John and Marie Gettman in Adams County. He attended Denman School for eight years. In May 1941, he married Leola Kroll in Juniata. He farmed in the Denman and Kenesaw areas until retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Shirley Soares of Clarkville, Tenn.; one son, William of Kenesaw; and two sisters, Esther Lillienthal and Rosie Amberg, both of California.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Marilyn J. Furrow

Tuesday, June 20, 2000

Former Hastings resident Marilyn J. (Bencken) Furrow, 64, of Lincoln died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Lincoln.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Wadlow-Rozanek Colonial Chapel in Lincoln. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Mrs. Furrow was born July 25, 1935, to John and Mary Bencken in Hastings. She worked for the State Fire Marshal's Office in Lincoln.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Eagle's Auxiliary, both in Grand Island.

Surviving is one son, Jeffrey of Lincoln.

Doris L. Smith

Services for former Lowell resident Doris L. Smith, 72, of Gibbon, who died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Kearney, are 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Kearney with the Rev. Don Franks and Rick Elred officiating. Burial is 2 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Visitation is 4-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and prior to services Friday at the church.

LaVern 'Jake' Vieselmeyer

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000

Bruning resident LaVern "Jake" Vieselmeyer, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Lincoln.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Phillip Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery with military rites conducted by Halfman American Legion Post No. 352 of Deshler. Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Vieselmeyer was born Sept. 17, 1920, to George and Ida (Hansjurgen) Vieselmeyer at a country home south of Deshler. He farmed in the Deshler and Hebron areas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On April 27, 1952, he married Ruby Presnell in Deshler.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Halfman American Legion Post No. 352, Thayer County Gold Star VFW Post No. 5328 in Hebron and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Kenneth of Bruning and Alan of Hebron; one brother, Glen of Hebron; and one sister, Gladys Levendofsky of Belleville, Kan.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may go to the family's choice.

Robert R. Boersma

Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Robert Roy Boersma, 67, of Arlington, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home.

Private family burial will be in Columbia Gardens in Arlington. Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Boersma was born May 26, 1932, to Lloyd S. and Phyllis (Hunter) Boersma in Nuckolls County. He attended Hastings College and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture with a degree in agricultural economics in 1955. On June 26, 1959, he married Elizabeth Jean Strecker in Fairview, Okla. He moved to Washington, D.C., upon his appointment to the Department of Agriculture. He worked there for 42 years as an agricultural economist. He lived in Arlington for the past 36 years.

Survivors are two sons, John Lloyd of Falls Church, Va., and Roger Henry of Arlington; and one sister, Kathrine Ann Boersma of Superior.

Grace I. Carper

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000

Former Hastings resident Grace Irene (Haskins) Carper, 89, of Albany, Ore., died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Albany.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home in Albany with the Rev. Dave Nolte officiating. Private burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Albany. Visitation is noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Carper was born May 22, 1910, to Charles A. and Julia Ann (Schultz) Haskins in Hastings. She graduated from high school in Hastings and then taught school in Ayr. On Sept. 1, 1929, she married Floyd Benjamin Carper in Hastings. They moved to Corvallis, Ore., in 1946 and to Albany in 1947. On March 23, 1979, her husband died.

Survivors are three sons, Darryl D. of Sisters, Ore., Floyd Jr. of Everett, Wash., and Ronald K. of Bellevue, Wash.; one brother, Charles Howard of Lovell, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by one brother; one sister; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Eastside Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

Allen R. Philips

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000

Kearney resident Allen R. Philips, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege with military rites conducted by Kearney VFW No. 759. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter; one son; three stepdaughters; one sister, Carolyn Miller of Hastings; and four stepgrandchildren.
