Kinney -- Merle Francis, 83, Lincoln passed away Friday (5/2/2003) at Homestead Rehabilitation Center. Born, July 23, 1919, in Lincoln, Merle served as a sergeant in the Nebraska National Guard and fought with 1 Company, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, in World War II. He was wounded in the Battle of St. Lo in Normandy, France, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked as a conductor for Burlington-Northern Railroad for 35 years. He was a member of United Transportation Union Local 627; American Legion Post 3; VFW Post 131; Disabled American Veterans; American Forward Association; and Faith United Church of Christ.
Survivors: wife of 61 years, Esther Johns Kinney; daughter, son-in-law, Patricia and Robert York, Littleton, Colo.; granddaughters, Elizabeth York Stauder, Fort Riley, Kansas, Patricia York Barber, Littleton; grandson, Captain (MD) Robert York Jr., Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha; three great-grandchildren.
