Mary High 1914-2002

Mary H. High, 88, Dalton, passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Dalton Presbyterian Church with Rev. H. Eldin Wells officiating. Burial will be in the Dalton Cemetery.
Friends may visit at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Research Department, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Helen High, the daughter of Travis C. and Mary Jane (Combast) Donald, was born June 4, 1914 at Vossberg, Miss. Mary was a professional educator. She taught for more than 30 years in several states.
On Dec. 2, 1940, Mary was united in marriage to Jim High at Louisville, Ky.
Mary was active in the Dalton Presbyterian Church and the Providence Chapter O.E.S. No. 108. She had been a member of the Mud Springs Women’s Club and enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and being a homemaker. Mary enjoyed her children and grandchildren and loved to crochet for them.
Survivors include: her husband Jim of Dalton; two sons, Buster High and wife Carol of Winnemucca, Nev. and Joe High and wife Debbie of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter, Jimmie Vrazsity and husband Tony of Denver, one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Flynn of Jackson, Miss.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Alma L. Adams 1925-2002

Alma L. Adams, 77, a longtime Sidney resident, died at Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends can call at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to either the Methodist Church Care Share or MHC Hospice.
Alma Lee Adams was born on July 26, 1925 in Iola, Kan., the daughter of Alvin and Barbara (Goodner) Urich. She attended elementary school in El Paso, Texas and high school in North Little Rock, Ark. were she was a member of the girls basketball team where they played the old style half court basketball. Before graduating she moved to California where she worked for Kaiser-Frasier shipyards as a welder to help the war effort. She then moved to Poteau, Okla. where she worked in banking and met Glenn Franklin Adams. They were married on Oct. 2, 1960 in Miami, Okla. After moving to Sidney, Glenn and Alma started Glenn’s Water and Dozer Service which they ran together until retiring in 1992. Alma had been an avid bowler until her health prompted her to look for other interests. She was a life member of the ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, permanent member of the American Legion Auxiliary #17, member of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Eastern Star, and the Sidney BPO Does Drove #94. Her parents, husband and a half brother John E. Wiley preceded her in death.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn Einfeldt of Oklahoma City; two half brothers, Jay D. Wiley Cordona, Tenn. and Herbert E. Wiley of Conway, Ark; two half sisters, Eva Jean French of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Mary E. Jedicke of Roosevelt, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

John Kenneth Groves 1919-2002

John Kenneth Groves, 83, Chappell, died Saturday, Nov. 30 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. His funeral is today at 2 p.m. at the Chappell United Methodist Church with Rev. Harun Gatobu officiating. Burial will follow in the Chappell Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established in care of the family.
John Kenneth Groves was born April 18, 1919 in Chappell, the son of John Watson and Amelia (Gassner) Groves. The family moved to a farm four miles north of Chappell when he was five years old. After attending public school, John drove transports and road construction trucks. He also hauled dirt for the Kingsley Dam north of Ogallala.
On Nov. 22, 1938 John married Vivian Lucille Rice in Wray, Colo. The couple lived in the Goodview area for five years. Then in 1943, they bought his father’s farm where John resided until his death.
He was a member of the Chappell United Methodist Church and a Past Worshipful Master (1961) of the Golden Fleece Lodge #205 of the Masonic Order, A.F. & A.M. in Chappell. The Grand Lodge presented John his 50-year Masonic membership on May 26, 1999. He received his 50-year Eastern Star membership pin on April 3, 2001 for his membership in the Luceba Chapter #220, O.E.S.
As a young man, he loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian L. Groves of Chappell; two daughters, Mary L. Groves and Marcia A. Groves, both of Chappell; two sisters, Garnett Frederick of Lincoln City, Ore. and Arlynne Hochhalter of Nampa, Idaho and one brother, Orville Groves of Parma, Idaho.

William H. Smith 1931-2002

William H. Smith, Jr., 71, Cheyenne, Wyo., died Thursday, Nov. 28 in Cheyenne after a 10-year battle with prostate cancer. His funeral will be Thursday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Schrader Chapel in Cheyenne with Rev. David Stratton officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Memorials have been established to the UMC Hospice at 214 E. 23rd Street or the American Cancer Association at 4202 Ridge Rd., both in Cheyenne, WY 82001.
William Smith was born July 18, 1931 in Hillsboro, Wis., the son of William H. Smith , Sr. and Hester (Brey) Smith.
He married Bonnie Thielges July 30, 1986 in Cheyenne. William was an insurance agent for State Farm. He was also a former member of the Lions Club, Elks and the Cheyenne Country Club and past president of the Hotel and Motel Association. William was a veteran of the Korean Branch of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Smith of Cheyenne; mother, Hester Smith, Sr. of Lusk, Wyo.; sons, David Smith of Sidney and William Smith and Bruce Smith, both of Kimball; step-son, David Bush of Cheyenne; step-daughters, Sarah Daigle of Slidell, La., Susan Utter of Lafayette, La., Carolyn Williams of Gilmer, Texas and Jennifer Bush of Concord, N.C.; six grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his father William H. Smith, Sr. and one grandson.

Clarice Elizabeth (Davies) Waddell 1914-2002

Clarice Elizabeth (Davies) Waddell, 88, of Friend, Nebr., formerly of Lincoln passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at First Plymounth Congregational Church with Dr. Otis Young officiating. Burial will be held at the Wyuka Cemetery. Visitation was held after 9 a.m. on Sunday at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln. Memorials may be made to Camp Fire Girls of America or the donor’s choice.
Clarice Elizabeth (Davies) Waddell was born on March 21, 1914 in Scottsbluff, Nebr. and graduated from Bayard High School in 1931. She then attended Scottsbluff Jr. College, Greeley Teachers College and Colorado A & M.
Clarice was a former Campfire Girls Leader, Red Cross Grey Lady and was an avid gardener and violinist. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and stamp collecting.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie M. & John Heefner of Hemphill, Texas; daughter Jan Jensen of Lincoln; sons Robert J. Waddell of Gering, and Barry Waddell of Dalton; sisters E. Jean Potts of San Antonio, Texas, and Shirley L. Hering of Mountain Home, Idaho; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, Harold F. & Bessie (McClanahan) Davies, husband, James, one granddaughter, and one great-grandson.

Joseph A. Welch 1927-2002

Joseph A. Welch, 75, a resident of Sidney, died on Nov. 19, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare in Sidney. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church in Tooele, Utah with Fr. William Wixted officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice.
Joseph Arthur Welch was born on Sept. 20, 1927 at Taos, N.M., the son of Julian and Fedalina (Martinez) Welch. He was raised and attended school at Boys Town and graduated from school in 1945. After graduation he was employed at the Tooele Army Depot as a civil service officer. He received the senior citizen award for his outstanding service to the Coats for Kids project, he also received awards for his honor and dedication for the help he extended to the homeless. He volunteered at the Spokane, Wash. Community Center and many different food banks that provided meals to the less fortunate. He loved to watch football and was an avid Seahawks fan. His parents and two grandchildren preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Art Welch of Tooele, Utah and Jim Welch of Salt Lake City, Utah; three daughters, Trudy Welch of Sidney, Michelle Behrens of Phoenix, Ariz. and Charlotte Green of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Epiphanio Welch of Tempe, Ariz. and William Welch of Carson City, Nev.; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lois June Wittrock 1930-2002

Lois June Wittrock, 72, a lifelong Cheyenne County resident, died Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney. Her funeral is today at 10:30 a.m. at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church northwest of Lodgepole with Pastor H. Eldin Wells officiating. Burial will follow in the Weyerts Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Memorial Health Center Extended Care.
Lois June was the last baby born on the Florke homestead northwest of Lodgepole to Herman J. and Alma G. (Grimes) Florke on Feb. 13, 1930. She attended country school and graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1947. Lois went on to earn her teaching degree and taught for 19 years in several area schools, including old one room school houses.
Lois married Gerald H. Wittrock Aug. 16, 1958 at the Weyerts church. The couple made their home north of Dix before moving to their current home in the Sunnyside community northwest of Lodgepole in 1961.
In 1967, Lois and Gerald were blessed with twins. Lois gave up teaching to provide a loving home for her family.
She will be remembered for her loving heart and kind generosity toward others. Lois was involved in her church, the “Mary” Circle and the Sunnyside Helping Hands Club. Towards her later years, her hobbies included cooking, collecting cookbooks and brightening others days with light-hearted jokes.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Wittrock of Lodgepole; twins, Gayla Kay Christofferson and husband Eric of Sidney and Galen Jay Wittrock of Lodgepole; three brothers, Vernon Florke of Lodgepole, Dale and wife Linda Florke of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Doyle and wife Cindy Florke of Omaha; three grandchildren, Kyle, Brandon and Kaitlyn Christofferson and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and one niece.

Helen G. Woolsey 1920-2002

Helen Grace Woolsey, 82, a longtime resident of Bridgeport, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002 at the Heritage of Bridgeport. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at The First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport. Burial will be in the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery at Bridgeport. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Bridgeport and at the church Monday morning prior to the service. Memorials may be given to the church, Heritage of Bridgeport, or in care of Don and Gloria Bancroft, 9119 Fairway Blvd. Sun Lakes, AZ 85248 or Jack and Phyllis Woolsey, PO Box 403 Salida, CO 81201.
Helen was born May 23, 1920 at Fort Collins, Colo. the daughter of Samuel and Nellie (Snider) Street. She grew up in the Lisco and Oshkosh area and graduated from Garden County High School with the Class of 1940. She was united in marriage to Melvin Woolsey on Aug. 18, 1946 in Bridgeport. The couple lived in Ogallala for a few years until moving to Bridgeport. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Don Bancroft of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law Jack and Phyllis Woolsey of Salida, Colo.; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sister Flossie Skinner of Tillamook, Ore.; sister-in-law Helen M. Woolsey of Bridgeport; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, and brother Sam Street.

Leonard E. Christeson 1916-2002

Leonard E. Christeson, 86, a Sidney resident, died at Memorial Health Center, Extended Care in Sidney on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Memorial Health Center, Extended Care Chapel with Rev. Alan Davis of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to either Alzheimer’s Association or the Sidney Public Library.
Leonard E. Christeson was born in Clinton, Mo. on July 25, 1916 the son of Ernest and Annie (Erickson) Christeson. He was raised and attended school in Clinton. He was married to Florence Rasmussen on June 12, 1940. He entered the United States Air Force on Nov. 4, 1942 at Fort Lewis, Wash. and served as an airplane mechanic during WWII, he was discharged from the service on Feb. 11, 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wis. He liked the west coast and after being discharged from the service he moved to Portland, Ore. and opened a paint and body shop. His first wife Florence preceded him in death in 1975. On April 25, 1980 he was married to Marjorie Fine in Indianapolis, Ind. and they made their home in Forsyth, Mo. until moving to Sidney in June of 2001. He enjoyed bowling, reading, playing cribbage and cards. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Florence, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie of Sidney; step- daughter Gayle and her husband Oscar Glover of Sidney; four brothers, Elmer Christeson of Graceville, Minn., Kenneth Christeson of Clinton, Mo., LeRoy Christeson of Anderson, S.C. and Edward Christeson of Abilene, Texas; three sisters, Laverne Ritter of Wylie, Texas, Doris Henry of Owatonna, Minn. and Frieda Williams of Graceville, Minn; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Paul H. Brauer 1934-2002

Paul H. Brauer, 68, Sidney, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at his home. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may visit at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in Paul’s name to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Memorial Health Center Hospice or the Dorwart Cancer Treatment Center.
Paul Herman Raymond Brauer, the son of Theodore August and Johanna Maria (Thieman) Brauer, was born May 22, 1934 on the family homestead in Cheyenne County. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1953.
On Oct. 9, 1953, Paul married Connie Phillips. To this union four sons and three daughters were born. Connie died in February of 1995.
On July 23, 1998, Paul married Dorothy Clemons in Reno, Nev.
He spent several years working in the oil fields and was employed by The Egging Company. Paul recently retired after 20 years of service with Master Trading Company in Sidney.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Sidney; six children, Mike Brauer and wife Carol of Sidney, Patricia and husband Alan Arps of Schuyler, Neb., Terry Brauer and wife Dustin of Sidney, Todd Brauer and wife Linda of Sidney, Tammy Buttle of Security, Colo. and Theresa and husband Chris White of Sidney; three step-children, Rhonda and husband Greg Zebolsky of Omaha, Bart Clemons of Omaha and Tamara and husband Michael Franklin of Bridgeport; three sisters, Olinda Ellis of Rogers, Ark., Estella and husband Larry Harris of Lemoyne, Neb. and Rowena and husband Ron Davis of Denver, Colo.; his in-laws, Ray Mickelsen of St. Paul, Minn., Elaine Brauer of Superior, Neb., Jim and Gay Phillips of Pueblo, Colo., Alice and Dan Amen and Susan and Calvin Langley, all of Sidney, Devona and Don Caha of Kearney, Judy Bayne and Janice Borgmann of Sidney, Gary and Tery Wolverton of Bayard; 14 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Connie; an infant son; two brothers, Robert and Don Brauer and two sisters, Edna Evans and Eileen Mickelsen.
